  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to compare the effects of 12 acupuncture treatments versus 24 acupuncture treatments for patients with dry eye syndrome. Methods : We have assessed the symptom score, number of dry eye symptoms, and ocular surface disease index(OSDI) scores before and after the acupuncture treatments. The group A received 12 acupuncture treatments, and the group B received 24 acupuncture treatments. To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture treatments the before and after scores of both groups were compared. Results : After treatment, symptom score, number of dry eye symptoms, and ocular surface disease index(OSDI) were significantly decreased in each group (p<0.001). The symptom score has shown a greater decrease in group B than group A, but no significant differences were seen in the numbers of existing symptoms and ocular surface disease index(OSDI) scores between the two groups. Conclusions : Acupuncture is an effective way to relieve the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. The more number of acupuncture treatments may be correlated with better outcomes in the means of symptom score.

  • Objectives : Lateral epicondylitis on elbow is one of the most common causes of elbow pain. Lateral epicondylitis can be managed with acupuncture, but the evidence for its effectiveness is uncertain. The purpose of this review is to investigate the trends of acupuncture treatments on lateral epicondylitis. Methods : We investigated the studies about acupuncture treatments for lateral epicondylitis via searching 5 Korean web databases(KTKP, RISS, OASIS, KCI, Kisti) The key search terms were 'Lateral epicondylitis', 'Tennis elbow', 'External epicondylitis'. 12 research papers(10 case reports, 1 RCT, 1NRCT) were found to be analyzed according to their published year, the titles of journals, published institution, the types of study, the number of cases, the types of treatments, the instruments for assessment and ethical approvals. The effectiveness of acupuncture treatment was classified. Results : 12 papers were published since 2003. The studies on acupuncture treatments about lateral epicondylitis were mainly published in The journal of pharmacopuncture. 10 case reports, 1 non-randomized controlled trials, 1 randomized controlled trials had been under research. In most of the research, the number of the cases were not enough. In 9 cases of the studies, various korean medicine treatments including acupuncture were used to treat the symptoms. In 3 cases of the studies single method was used to treat the symptoms. Visual analogue scale(VAS) and range of motion(ROM), grip strength were used as primary assessments. Among 12 clinical studies, 1 of them were accepted by institutional review board(IRB). Conclusions : In this study, we analyzed the trends of acupuncture treatments on lateral epicondylitis. Reviewing the domestic trends of studies on acupuncture treatments for lateral epicondylitis and examining the strong and weak points of those treatments are essential for the future studies.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to figure out how effectively acupuncture treatment and herb-medicine work on patients with elevation of LFT value and lipid-obesity index. Methods : The subject were 23 patients visited to Dept. of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Kwangdong Oriental Medicine Hospital, who complained chronic fatigue and wandering pain from Oct. 2007. to Oct. 2008. Before treatments, they were tested for LFT, total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. They were treated with Ganjeonggyeok acupuncture weekly for 1 month. During acupuncture treatments, we applied Sangkankunbi-tang to all patients twice a day. After 1 month, they were retested for LFT, total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. Results : 1. After treatments, we could get the result of dropping means of AST, ALT and $\gamma$-GTP value. Statistical significance of ALT and $\gamma$-GTP were recognized before and after treatments, but AST was not recognized. 2. After treatments, we also could get the result of dropping means of total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. Statistical significance of all values were recognized before and after treatments. 3. Among 23 patients, 10 cases were reported that they were not within normal limits at least one in AST, ALT and $\gamma$-GTP. After treatments of those patients, we could get the result of dropping means of AST, ALT and $\gamma$-GTP value. Statistical significance of all values were recognized before and after treatments. 4. Among 23 patients, 19 cases were reported that they were not within normal limits at least one in total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. After treatments of those patients, we could get the result of dropping means of total cholesterol, triglyceride, body fat ratio and obesity index. Statistical significance of all values were recognized before and after treatments. Conclusions : Though further study is necessary, our finding suggest that the conduction of Ganjeonggyeok acupuncture and Sangkankunbi-tang treatments have helped to decrease the figures of LFT and lipid-obesity index in patients.

  • In infrapatellar bursitis, an acute or chronic inflammation of the infrapatellar bursa causes pain and swelling at the front of the knee. To date, only a few studies have reported cases of infrapatellar bursitis that are treated using Korean medicine. The aim of the present study is to report a case of a 27-year-old male with front knee pain caused by infrapatellar bursitis that was treated with integrated Korean medicine treatments (e.g., acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine). The patient-reported numeric rating scale confirmed that the patient's pain was relieved, while the physical function tests also indicated a significant improvement. Based on the findings of this study, it can be suggested that integrated Korean medicine treatments could be an effective therapeutic option for patients diagnosed with infrapatellar bursitis.

  • Objectives : Chronic post-thoracotomy pain is a refractory condition that responds poorly to existing pain treatments. The aim of this report is to describe favorable symptom changes in a patient with chronic post-thoracotomy pain after major chest trauma who received a series of manual acupuncture treatments over 3 months. Methods : Twelve sessions of manual acupuncture were provided to the patient, once or twice a week. Results : The manual acupuncture sessions were well tolerated. Minor adverse events, including temporary minor bleeding at the needled sites, were intermittently observed. The patient's symptoms, including pain, sleep disturbance, and anxiety gradually resolved and had almost completely disappeared after 12 sessions of acupuncture treatment. Conclusion : This single case report cannot confirm whether the observed positive changes in the patient's symptoms and dysfunctions are associated with the acupuncture treatments. Randomized controlled trials are necessary to explore the role of acupuncture in chronic post-thoracotomy pain in patients with major chest trauma.

  • The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is crucial for stabilizing the ulnar side of the wrist but can be partially torn due to degenerative changes, falling, or sudden injuries. However, only a few studies have focused on the use of Korean medicine treatments for TFCC-related wrist pain. This case report presents the successful outcomes of integrated Korean medicine treatment in a patient with a partial TFCC tear. The diagnosis was confirmed via magnetic resonance imaging, which revealed the tear. Subsequently, the patient received integrated Korean medicine treatments. The assessment of the pain scale scores revealed a significant reduction in wrist pain and an improvement in daily life activities. Based on the findings of this study, integrated Korean medicine treatments have been proven to be an effective treatment option for patients with a partial TFCC tear. However, further research is needed to determine the potential benefits and mechanisms of these treatments in managing TFCC-related wrist pain.
