Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate sub-chronic toxicity of scolopendrid pharmacopuncture in mouse and method of increasing output of scolopendrid pharmacopuncture. Methods In order to prove the clinical safety of scolopendrid pharmacopuncture during 90 days, We have observed the physical reaction(side effect) and clinical pathology test after scolopendrid pharmacopuncture treatment and investigated method of increasing Output of scolopendrid pharmacopuncture for 90%, 80%, 70% ethanol. Results In subchronic toxicity test, there was no significant sign in clinical sign, opthalmological values, body weights, hematological values and urinalysis values. And we could see that food consumptions and water consumptions increased significantly, albumin, triglycerides, GPT in blood chemical values and Liver, Testis(right) in organ weights changed significantly in some groups, compared with those in the S1 group. But these changes were observed within the scope of physiology. So there was no sign of toxication in subchronic toxicity test, and we can tell that NOAEL(No Observed Adverse Effect Level) is above 0.286mg/kg/day. And 70% ethanol solution of scolopendrid was yielded the most amount of substance. Conclusions This study demonstrates that scolopendrid pharmacopuncture is to treatment of safety for a long time and we can obtain much amount from 70% ethanol solution of scolopendrid.
Objective: This study presents a case of a 56-year-old Korean male with right-side hemianopia due to stroke. Homonymous hemianopia represents a visual field defect related to loss of vision in all or part of the left or right visual field in both eyes; treatment options for this condition are limited.Method: The patient was treated with acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine (Yangguksanhwa-tang), and electroacupuncture around the eyes. We executed a confrontation visual field exam (the Donders test) to evaluate any visual field defectsResults: The visual field area showed improvement after the management of traditional Korean medical treatments. Conclusion: Based on this case, traditional Korean medical treatments may be effective in treating hemianopia due to stroke.
Background and Objective : Erythema nodosum-like lesions in patients with Behcet's disease is a reactive dermatosis that occurs in response to various stimuli, such as bacterial, fungal and viral infections, drugs and malignancies. We observed and treated a case of erythema nodosum-like lesions with Behcet's disease. We present this case because there were no former reports of erythema nodosum-like lesions with Behcet's disease treated by herbal medicine. Methods : The patient was a 28-year-old. The chief complains were erythema, nodose, edema, burning sensation, tenderness on both legs, forearms and feet, arthralgia and genital ulcers. She was treated with Wolbi-Tang for eleven days. We diagnosed the medication according to the results of manual abdominal examination of the patient. We used the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). Results : After the treatment the grade of VAS was decreased and clinical symptoms were improved. Conclusions : Wolbi-Tang can be used on the treatment of erythema nodosum-like lesions with Behcet's disease.
The purpose of this study is to report the effect in treating a patient with a case of avulsion fracture of the proximal 5th metatarsal with a combination of Korean medicine therapy. We treated the patient with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, cupping, and herbal medicine The numeric rating scale, X-ray were applied as outcome measures. After complex Korean medicine treatment, this patient's avulsion fracture of the proximal 5th metatarsal was improved and pain was reduced. This result shows that Korean medical therapy may be an effective option for avulsion fracture of the proximal 5th metatarsal.
This study is to report the usefulness of ultrasound in diagnosing rib fracture and the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided essential bee venom pharmacopuncture as a treatment of it. A 46-year-old unable to find a fracture by chest radiography was diagnosed it on ultrasound. The patient was applied integrative Korean medical treatments and ultrasound-guided essential bee venom pharmacopuncture at the fracture site for 4 weeks, 18 times total. Numeral rating scale (NRS) was used to evaluate the amount of pain. The chest pain when turning over the body was reduced from NRS 8 to 2 for 4 weeks. The remarkable aspect is that the pain was immediately relieved after phamacopuncture and its effect lasted for 3 hours. This report suggests ultrasound can be useful for diagnosing rib fracture and also helpful for safety and accuracy of pharmacopuncture. Additionally, essential bee venom can be considered one of the methods of treating rib fracture.
Objectives: This systematic review aimed to put the case reports of lung cancer on Korean medicine (KM) together and adopt the results in clinical practice. Methods: Researches were searched using the PubMed, EMBASE, OASIS, KoreanTK, KISTI, RISS, KISS, and NDSL. The search term were 'lung cancer' and KM. There was no restriction in year. Results: 1. Among the 48 studies, 68 patients were reported in total. The types of lung cancer were non-small-cell lung cancer (n=41) and small-cell lung cancer (n=6). 2. The number of patients who received KM therapy alone was 40. On the other hand, 25 patients were treated with KM and chemotherapy simultaneously. All case reports used herbal medicine except 2 studies. Other types of treatment were acupuncture, moxibustion, pharmacopuncture, cupping, meditation, etc. 3. Several efficacy evaluation variables were used such as tumor size, changes of symptoms, duration of survival, the quality of life, and so on. The safety was evaluated by checking adverse effects using blood test. 4. Regarding the tumor response, partial response was reported in 12 cases, stable disease was in 22 cases, 50% of the total cases, which is a high level of tumor response. Furthermore, all 11 cases with the evaluation on the length of survival showed prolonged survival than the expectancy of corresponding stage, with the stable quality of life. Conclusion: We have found that the applicability of KM for treatment of lung cancer through this review. Evidence based medicine can be realized by checking cases and applying them in clinical practice.
Objectives: The aim of this case report is to present abdominal pain relief in a patient diagnosed with colorectal cancer with several organ metastases. Methods: The patient was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, and moxibustion. The effect of the treatment was measured by a numeric rating scale (NRS). Results: The NRS of the patient's abdominal pain was reduced after Korean medicine treatment. Conclusions: This case report suggests that Korean medicine may be effective for treating abdominal pain in cancer patients. However, additional study is needed to confirm interactions between Korean medicine and the control of abdominal pain.
