An Image Segmentation Algorithm using the Shape Space Model (모양공간 모델을 이용한 영상분할 알고리즘)

  • Since the MPEG-4 visual standard enables content-based functionalities, it is necessary to extract video objects from video sequences. Segmentation algorithms can largely be classified into two different categories: automatic segmentation and user-assisted segmentation. In this paper, we propose a new user-assisted image segmentation method based on the active contour. If we define a shape space as a set of all possible variations from the initial curve and we assume that the shape space is linear, it can be decomposed into the column space and the left null space of the shape matrix. In the proposed method, the shape space vector in the column space describes changes from the initial curve to the imaginary feature curve, and a dynamic graph search algorithm describes the detailed shape of the object in the left null space. Since we employ the shape matrix and the SUSAN operator to outline object boundaries, the proposed algorithm can ignore unwanted feature points generated by low-level image processing operations and is, therefore, applicable to images of complex background. We can also compensate for limitations of the shape matrix with a dynamic graph search algorithm.

Chromospheric oscillation signatures observed by the NST FISS

  • In this study, we examined chromospheric oscillation signatures in two solar active regions, a limb active region and a sunspot with a light bridge, observed by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) of the 1.6m New Solar Telescope (NST) at Big Bear Solar Observatory. The FISS is a slit spectrograph with a fast imaging capability and can observe the solar chromosphere in $H{\alpha}$ and Ca II $8542{\AA}$ bands simultaneously with high spectral resolutions. After dark and flat correction, we compensated for image rotation at the Coude focus and made image alignment. We estimated Doppler shifts over active regions using the bisector method and investigated the temporal and spatial fluctuations of Doppler shifts for some selected cases. And we obtain the power map by using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram technique to examine the oscillation power at different features. Finally, we will discuss our results and implications.

  • We demonstrate the luminosity dependence of the covering factor (CF) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), based on AKARI mid-infrared all-sky survey catalog. Combining the AKARI with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic data, we selected 243 galaxies at $9{\mu}m$ and 255 galaxies at $18{\mu}m$. We then identified 64 AGNs at $9{\mu}m$ and 105 AGNs at $18{\mu}m$ by their optical emission lines. Following that, we estimated the CF as the fraction of type 2 AGN in all AGNs. We found that the CF decreased with increasing $18{\mu}m$ luminosity, regardless of the choice of type 2 AGN classification criteria.

Different Responses of Solar Wind and Geomagnetism to Solar Activity during Quiet and Active Periods

  • It is well known that there are good relations of coronal hole (CH) parameters such as the size, location, and magnetic field strength to the solar wind conditions and the geomagnetic storms. Especially in the minimum phase of solar cycle, CHs in mid- or low-latitude are one of major drivers for geomagnetic storms, since they form corotating interaction regions (CIRs). By adopting the method of Vrsnak et al. (2007), the Space Weather Research Center (SWRC) in Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has done daily forecast of solar wind speed and Dst index from 2010. Through years of experience, we realize that the geomagnetic storms caused by CHs have different characteristics from those by CMEs. Thus, we statistically analyze the characteristics and causality of the geomagnetic storms by the CHs rather than the CMEs with dataset obtained during the solar activity was very low. For this, we examine the CH properties, solar wind parameters as well as geomagnetic storm indices. As the first result, we show the different trends of the solar wind parameters and geomagnetic indices depending on the degree of solar activity represented by CH (quiet) or sunspot number (SSN) in the active region (active) and then we evaluate our forecasts using CH information and suggest several ideas to improve forecasting capability.

  • Purpose: Planning space of the house is important as a universal place to relieve stress of contemporary people. Void space is easy to perform mental and cultural programs in aspect of affording the healing behavior. The "Interface" accommodates healing behaviors through mutual interchange between void space and solid space as the edge of the solid space around void space. This study presents a efficient theory of healing space through combining space theory with the Kitwood's theory of psychiatry used for the art therapy. Methods: Spatial elements based on Kitwood's theory converges towards 2 behavioral elements; Meditation(-), Sense of Community(+). Balancing with reciprocal complement between behaviors of passive and stable "Meditation(-)" and active and released "Sense of Community(+)" was analysed. Results: "Faciliation" can be used in combination with "Flow(+)" as active factor. "Validation" is combined with "Prospect(+,-)", and divides into 2 factor ; "Recognition-Refreshment(-)", "Reaction-Social Exchange(+)". "Holding" is combined with "Refuge(-)" as passive factor. Implications: This study established concept of spatial healing elements in connection with theory of Psychiatry about Alzheimer that is extreme situation of stress. This study is expected to enhance the validity and efficiency in analysis of healing space.

Activity Space of Yangban Landlords during the Colonial Era : Based on the Kieo written by Ryu Hyeong-eop - (일기를 통해 본 한말${\sim}$일제강점기 양반소지주의 활동공간 - 류형업의 "기어"를 자료로 -)

  • This paper uses the diary entitled Kieo, which was kept by Ryu Hyeong-eop for 38 years, to analyze the active space of small-scale Yangban landlords. Ryu lived during the period spanning from the end of the Taehan Empire through the colonial era. The researcher classified the contents of Kieo into different sections which were divided according to different stages of the writer's life, his objectives, destinations, and periods, and based on the writer's life-cycle, strived to recreate his spatial activities. As a result, researcher was able to ascertain that Ryu's spatial activities gradually increased, and that his active space also continuously expanded. Ryu's active space during his youth was narrow and centered around certain specific places. However, this active space gradually increased as time went by. It was during the middle stages of his life that the volume of his spatial activities was the heaviest. In addition, the objectives of his outings also became more diversified over time. This change was originated in the larger changes in his roles within the family and community, as well as by the changes in the periodic situation. Moreover, the regional sphere of Ryu's outings, including his day and over nights trips, allowed the researcher to form a better understanding of the daily living area of the Yangban.

  • This paper presents an instantaneous space vector modulated voltage source type three-phase soft-switching PFC rectifier using a single auxiliary resonant DC Link snubber for alternative energy utilizations. in the first place, the operating principle of an active auxiliary resonant DC link snubber circuit is described including its unique features. In the next place, the simulation analysis of three-phase soft-switching PWM rectifier is implemented, and the operating performances or the three-phase voltage-fed PWM rectifier treated here, which can operate under the conditions of sinewave line current shaping and utility power factor are evaluated and discussed on tile basis of this simulation results.
