Active shape change of an SMA hybrid composite plate

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the shape control of plates via embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. An extensive body of literature proposes the use of SMA wires to actively modify the shape or stiffness of a structure; in most cases, however, the study focuses on modeling and little experimental data is available. In this work, a simple proof of concept specimen was built by attaching four prestrained SMA wires to one side of a carbon fiber laminate plate strip. The specimen was clamped at one end and tested in an environmental chamber, measuring the tip displacement and the SMA temperature. At heating, actuation of the SMA wires bends the plate; at cooling deformation is partially recovered. The specimen was actuated a few times between two fixed temperatures $T_c$ and $T_h$, whereas in the last actuation a temperature $T_f$ > $T_h$ was reached. Contrary to most model predictions, in the first actuation the transformation temperatures are significantly higher than in the following cycles, which are stable. Moreover, if the temperature $T_h$ is exceeded, two separate actuations occur during heating: the first follows the path of the stable cycles; the second, starting at $T_h$, is similar to the first cycle. An interpretation of the phenomenon is given using some differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements. The observed behavior emphasizes the need to build a more comprehensive constitutive model able to include these effects.

통계학적 학습을 이용한 머리와 어깨선의 위치 찾기 (Localizing Head and Shoulder Line Using Statistical Learning)

  • 영상에서 사람의 머리위치를 찾는 문제에 있어서 어깨선 정보를 이용하는 것은 아주 유용하다. 영상에서 머리 외곽선과 어깨선의 형태는 일정한 변형을 유지하면서 같이 움직이므로 이를 ASM(Active Shape Model) 기법을 사용해서 통계적으로 모델링 할 수 있다. 그러나 ASM 모델은 국부적인 에지나 그래디언트에 의존하므로 배경 에지나 클러터 성분에 민감하다. 한편 AAM(Active Appearance Model) 모델은 텍스쳐 등을 이용하지만, 사람의 피부색, 머리색깔, 옷 색깔 등의 차이로 인해서 통계적인 학습방법을 쓰기가 어렵고, 전체 비디오에서 외모(Appearance)가 시간적으로 변한다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 외모(Apperance) 모델을 변화에 따라 바꾸는 대신, 영상의 각 화소를 머리, 어깨, 배경으로 구분하는 분별적 외모 모델(discriminative appearance)를 사용한다. 실험을 통해서 제안된 방법이 기존의 기법에 비해서 포즈변화와 가려짐, 조명의 변화 등에 강인함을 보여준다. 또한 제안된 기법은 실시간으로 작동하는 장점 또한 가진다.

동적 윤곽 모델을 이용한 이동 물체 추적 (Moving Object Tracking Using Active Contour Model)

  • In this paper, the visual tracking system for arbitrary shaped moving object is proposed. The established tracking system can be divided into model based method that needs previous model for target object and image based method that uses image feature. In the model based method, the reliable tracking is possible, but simplification of the shape is necessary and the application is restricted to definite target mod el. On the other hand, in the image based method, the process speed can be increased, but the shape information is lost and the tracking system is sensitive to image noise. The proposed tracking system is composed of the extraction process that recognizes the existence of moving object and tracking process that extracts dynamic characteristics and shape information of the target objects. Specially, active contour model is used to effectively track the object that is undergoing shape change. In initializatio n process of the contour model, the semi-automatic operation can be avoided and the convergence speed of the contour can be increased by the proposed effective initialization method. Also, for the efficient solution of the correspondence problem in multiple objects tracking, the variation function that uses the variation of position structure in image frame and snake energy level is proposed. In order to verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed tracking system, real time tracking experiment for multiple moving objects is implemented.

  • In case of environment requiring safety such as human body and requiring flexible shape, a conventional mechanical actuator system does not satisfy requirement. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, a research of various smart material such as EAP (Electro Active Polymer), EAC (Electro Active Ceramic) and SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) is in progress. Recently, the highest preferring material among various smart material is EP (Electrostictive Polymer), because it has very fast response time, poerful force and large displacement. The previous researches have been studied properties of polymer and simple control, but present researches are studied a polymer actuator. An EP (Electostrictive Polymer) actuator has properties which change variably as shape and environmental condition. Therefore, in order to coincide with a user's purpose, it is important not only to decide a shape of actuator and mechanical design but also to investigate a efficient controller. In this paper, we constructed the control logic with an adaptive fuvy algorithm which depends on the physical properties of EP that has a dielectric constant depending on time.

Benzyl Alcohol이 세포막의 형태 및 Calcium 이온 이동에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Benzyl Alcohol on Structures and Calcium Transport Function of Biological Cell Membranes)

  • Benzyl alcohol is known to have dual effect on the red blood cell shape change. At low concentration up to 50 mM benzyl alcohol transformed the shape from discocyte to stomatocyte by preferent binding to the inner hemileaflet, however, at higher concentratransformed the shape from discocyte to stomatocyte by preferential binding to the inner monolayer, however, at higher concentration above 50 mM benzyl alcohol transformed to echinocyte by affecting both monolayers. These results suggest that the effect of benzyl alcohol on the red blood cell shape and $Ca^{++}$ transport across cardiac cell membranes to assess the effects of the drug on the structures and functions of the biological cell membranes. The results are as follows: 1) Benzyl alcohol up to 40 mM caused progressive stomatocytic shap change of the red blood cell but above 50 mM benzyl alcohol caused echinocytic shape change. 2) Benzyl alcohol up to 40 mM inhibited both osmotic hemolysis and osmotic volume change of the red blood cell in hypotonic and hypertonic NaCl solutions, respectively. 3) Benzyl alcohol inhibited both Bowditch Staircase and Wood-worth Staircase phenomena at rat left auricle. 4) Benzyl alcohol at concentration of 5 mM increased $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity of red blood cell ghosts slightly but above S mM benzyl alcohol inhibited the $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity. 5) Benzyl alcohol at concentrations of 5 mM and 10 mM increased $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity slightly at rat gastrocnemius muscle S.R. but above 10 mM benzyl alcohol inhibited the $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity. Above results indicate that benzyl alcohol inhibit water permeability and $Ca^{++}$ transport across cell membranes in part via effects on the fluidity and transition temperatures of the bulk lipid by preferential intercalation into cytoplasmic monolayer and in part via other effect on the conformational change of active sites of the $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ molecule extended in cytoplasmic face.

Dynamic behavior of smart material embedded wind turbine blade under actuated condition

  • Vibrations of a wind turbine blade have a negative impact on its performance and result in failure of the blade, therefore an approach to effectively control vibration in turbine blades are sought by wind industry. The small domestic horizontal axis wind turbine blades induce flap wise (out-of-plane) vibration, due to varying wind speeds. These flap wise vibrations are transferred to the structure, which even causes catastrophic failure of the system. Shape memory alloys which possess physical property of variable stiffness across different phases are embedded into the composite blades for active vibration control. Previously Shape memory alloys have been used as actuators to change their angles and orientations in fighter jet blades but not used for active vibration control for wind turbine blades. In this work a GFRP blade embedded with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) and tested for its vibrational and material damping characteristics, under martensitic and austenite conditions. The embedment portrays 47% reduction in displacement of blade, with respect to the conventional blade. An analytical model for the actuated smart blade is also proposed, which validates the harmonic response of the smart blade.

Streamlined Shape of Endothelial Cells

  • Flow induced shape change is important for spatial interpretation of vascular response and for understanding of mechanotransduction in a single cell. We investigated the possible shapes of endothelial cell (EC) in a mathematical model and compared these with experimental results. The linearized analytic solution from the sinusoidal wavy wall and Stokes flow was applied with the constraint of EC volume. The three dimensional structure of the human umbilical vein endothelial cell was visualized in static culture or after various durations of shear stress (20 $dyne/cm^2$ for 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 120min). The shape ratio (width: length: height) of model agreed with that of the experimental result, which represented the drag force minimizing shape of stream-lining. EC would be streamlined in order to accommodate to the shear flow environmented by active reconstruction of cytoskeletons and membranes through a drag force the sensing mechanism.

실제 해상 실험 데이터를 이용한 능동소나 표적/비표적 식별 (Active Sonar Target/Nontarget Classification Using Real Sea-trial Data)

  • Target/Nontarget classification can be divided into the study of shape estimation of the target analysing reflected echo signal and of type classification of the target using acoustical features. In active sonar system, the feature vectors are extracted from the signal reflected from the target, and an classification algorithm is applied to determine whether the received signal is a target or not. However, received sonar signals can be distorted in the underwater environments, and the spatio-temporal characteristics of active sonar signals change according to the aspect of the target. In addition, it is very difficult to collect real sea-trial data for research. In this paper, target/non-target classification were performed using real sea-trial data. Feature vectors are extracted using MFCC(Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients), filterbank energy in the Fourier spectrum and wavelet domain. For the performance verification, classification experiments were performed using backpropagation neural network classifiers.

It caused for a sub-actuator to operate at the same time that a sub-actuator system operation increase with a functional improvement and control efficiency improvement in each actuator, hence it becomes very important to manage it effectively and to control the sub-system which Is operated effectively. There is a limitation on the management of Main-host system which has multiple sub-system, hence it brings out the Multi-Vehicle Control process that disperse the task efficiently. Controlling the multi-dispersion system efficiently, it needs the research of Main-host system's scheduling, data interchange between sub-actuators, data interchange between Main-host system and sub-actuator system, and data communication process. Therefore in this papers, we compared the fuzzy controller with the adaptive fuzzy controller. also, we applied the scheduling method for efficient multi-control in EP Actuator and the algorithm with interchanging data, protocol design.

머신러닝을 이용한 기후변화에 따른 천궁 생리 활성 성분 예측 모델 연구 (A Study on the Prediction Model for Bioactive Components of Cnidium officinale Makino according to Climate Change using Machine Learning)

  • 최근 기온 상승, 가뭄, 홍수 등 기후변화가 세계적인 문제로 대두되고 있으며, 농업분야에서는 작물의 특성과 생산성에 많은 영향을 미칠 것으로 예측하고 있다. 천궁은 전통적으로 사용되는 한약재뿐만 아니라 건강기능식품, 천연물의약품, 생활소재 등 다양한 산업적 원료로 활용되고 있으나, 연작장해, 기후변화 등 위협 요인으로 인한 생산성이 감소되고 있다. 그러므로 본 논문에서는 기후변화에 취약한 대표 약용 작물인 천궁의 기후변화 시나리오에 따른 생리 활성 성분 지표를 예측할 수 있는 모델을 제안한다. 먼저 기상 정보와 생리 반응, 생리 활성 성분 정보의 수집 데이터 불균형 문제를 해결하기 위해 CTGAN 알고리즘을 이용하여 데이터를 증강하였다. 증강 데이터 품질 측정을 위해 Column Shape, Column Pair Trends를 이용하였으며 평균 88% Overall Quality를 달성하였다. 증강 데이터를 이용하여 지상부와 지하부로 나누어 페놀과 플라보노이드 함량을 예측하기 위해 5가지 모델 RF, SVR, XGBoost, AdaBoost, LightBGM을 이용하여 평가하였다. 모델 성능 평가 결과 XGBoost 모델이 천궁 생리 활성 성분 예측에 가장 우수한 성능을 보였으며, SVR 모델 대비 약 2배 정도의 향상된 정확도를 확인할 수 있었다.
