  • Fiber-guided sensor system using a generator and a receiver can detect the amplitude of load or pressure. However, this type of sensor can show some difficulties in detecting the location of damages and pressure loadings. To overcome this weakness of this type, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor, which has an integrated ultrasonic generator and sensing part, was developed in this study. By using this sensor system, the location of mechanical loads can be exactly detected. Moreover, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor is more cost-effective than an ultrasonic fiber sensor using two piezoelectric transducers which are used as a generator and a receiver, respectively. Two applications of the ultrasonic active fiber sensor are demonstrated: cure monitoring of lead and measurement of liquid level. Present results showed that the active fiber sensor can be applied for various environmental sensing.

  • In this paper, we propose a new target tracking filter architecture using active and passive sensors in underwater environment. A passive sensor for target tracking needs a bearing measurement of target. And target tracking filter for using passive sensor has the observability problem. On the other hand, an active sensor does not have the problem associated with system observability problem because an active sensor uses bearing and range measurement. In this paper, the tracking filter algorithm that could be used in the active and passive sensor system is proposed to analyze maneuvering target and to improve target tracking performance. The proposed tracking filter algorithm is tested by a series of computer simulation runs and the results are analyzed and compared with existing algorithm.

  • The active rule system is a key element of the rule-based mobile agent middleware system for activeness and autonomy of the sensor network. The rule manager, which is the main components of active rule based mobile agent framework and active rule system, performs the control and management of the rule-related processes. In this paper, we design and implement the roles and functions of the rule manager in detail. The proposed rule manager plays an important role in the sensor network environment. The sensor data server loads the active rule on the mobile agent by the rule manager according to the situations, and the mobile agent migrates to the destination node and performs the designated action. This active rule-based mobile agent middleware system presents the usefulness for the various sensor network applications. Through the rule execution experiment using the rule-based mobile agent, we show the adaptability and applicability of rule-based mobile agent middleware system to the dynamic environmental changes in sensor networks.

  • This study proposes technology using Active Shape Model to track the object separating it by depth-sensors. Unlike the common visual camera, the depth-sensor is not affected by the intensity of illumination, and therefore a more robust object can be extracted. The proposed algorithm removes the horizontal component from the information of the initial depth map and separates the object using the vertical component. In addition, it is also a more efficient morphology, and labeling to perform image correction and object extraction. By applying Active Shape Model to the information of an extracted object, it can track the object more robustly. Active Shape Model has a robust feature-to-object occlusion phenomenon. In comparison to visual camera-based object tracking algorithms, the proposed technology, using the existing depth of the sensor, is more efficient and robust at object tracking. Experimental results, show that the proposed ASM-based algorithm using depth sensor can robustly track objects in real-time.

  • In this paper, we suggest the active multi-agent middleware for the sensor network application. For this, firstly we design and implement the active rule based mobile agent middleware. The mobile agent in the proposed system visits the destination sensor nodes according to the migration list offered by the meta table in the name space of the naming agent, acquires and transmits sensor data according to the purpose and needs through the active rules, and directly executes the actions corresponding to the optional events(changed sensor data and/or time etc.). And then, we show the potential applicability of the active rule based mobile agent middleware in various active sensor networks through the interaction with the rule base system and context database system.

  • Most autonomous mobile robots view things only in front of them. As a result they may collide against objects moving from the side or behind. To overcome the problem we have built an Active Omni-directional Range Sensor that can obtain omni-directional depth data by a laser conic plane and a conic mirror. Also we proposed a self-localization algorithm of mobile robot in unknown environment by fusion of Odometer and Active Omn-directional Range Sensor.

  • Self-organization of distributed wireless sensor nodes is a critical issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), since each sensor node has limited energy, bandwidth, and scalability. These issues prevent sensor nodes from actively collaborating with the other types of sensor nodes deployed in a typical heterogeneous and somewhat hostile environment. The automated self-organization of a WSN becomes more challenging as the number of sensor nodes increases in the network. In this paper, we propose a dynamic self-organized architecture that combines tree topology with a drawn-grid algorithm to automate the self-organization process for WSNs. In order to make our proposed architecture scalable, we assume that all participating active sensor nodes are unaware of their primary locations. In particular, this paper presents two algorithms called active-tree and drawn-grid. The proposed active-tree algorithm uses a tree topology to assign node IDs and define different roles to each participating sensor node. On the other hand, the drawn-grid algorithm divides the sensor nodes into cells with respect to the radio coverage area and the specific roles assigned by the active-tree algorithm. Thus, both proposed algorithms collaborate with each other to automate the self-organizing process for WSNs. The numerical and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed dynamic architecture performs much better than a static architecture in terms of the self-organization of wireless sensor nodes and energy consumption.

  • The active vibration control of composite shell structure has been performed with the optimized sensor/actuator system. For the design of sensor/actuator system, a method based on finite element technique is developed. The nine-node Mindlin shell element has been used for modeling the integrated system of laminated composite shell with PVDF sensor/actuator. The distributed selective modal sensor/actuator system is established to prevent the effect of spillover. Electrode patterns and lamination angles of sensor/actuator are optimized using genetic algorithm. Continuous electrode patterns are discretized according to finite element mesh, and orientation angle is encoded into discrete values using binary string. Sensor is designed to minimize the observation spillover, and actuator is designed to minimize the system energy of the control modes under a given initial condition. Modal sensor/actuator for the first and the second mode vibration control of singly curved cantilevered composite shell structure are designed with the method developed on the finite element method and optimization. For verification, the experimental test of the active vibration control is performed for the composite shell structure. Discrete LQG method is used as a control law.

  • In this paper, we propose the active rule system applying with emotional margin for power saving control. The proposed system in this paper is a part of the system which derives smart power saving by adjusting the illuminance using active rules within compromising the user's emotion. For this, we set the specific range of standard illuminance and the lower bound of user's emotional margin of illuminance based on measurements and analysis, and use these data in design of active rules. And then, we design and implement the active rule system using mobile agent. The mobile agent in the proposed system migrates to the destination sensor nodes, acquires and transmits sensor data according to the purpose and needs through the active rules, and directly executes the actions corresponding to the optional events(changed sensor data and/or time etc.). And then, we show the potential applicability of the proposed active rule system in various active sensor network applications through the interaction with the rule base and mobile sensor network middleware system.

  • Direct velocity feedback (DVFB) control is known that it offers an unconditional stability with very high performance when the control strategy is applied at a point collocated sensor and actuator pair, because the sensor-actuator pair has strictly positive real (SPR) property. In this paper, two types of collocated sensor-actuator pairs are considered for practical active vibration control of a structure. They are a point collocated sensor-actuator pair and a point sensor-distributed actuator pair. Both pairs with DVFB sho robust stability and performance. It is noted that the collocated point sensor-actuator ultimately acts as a 'skyhook' damper, but the point sensor-distributed actuator pair with DVFB acts as a 'skyhook' rotational dmaper pair.ational dmaper pair.
