  • This paper presents a robust and superior control performance of a quarter-vehicle electrorheological (ER) suspension system. In order to achieve this goal, a moving sliding mode control algorithm is adopted, and its moving strategy is tuned by fuzzy logic. As a first step, ER damper is designed and manufactured for a passenger vehicle suspension system, and its field-dependent damping force is experimentally evaluated. After formulating the governing equation of motion for the quarter-vehicle ER suspension system, a stable sliding surface and moving algorithm based on fuzzy logic are formulated. The fuzzy moving sliding mode controller is then constructed and experimentally implemented. Control performances of the ER suspension system are evaluated in both time and frequency domains.

  • A number of issues related with the vibrational behavior of pretwisted rotating beams featuring anisotropic properties and incorporating adaptive capabilities are considered in this paper. The adaptive capabilities are provided by a system of piezoactuators bonded or embedded into the structure. Based on the converse piezoelectric effect and on the out of phase activation, boundary control moments are pizoelectrically induced at the beam tip. A feedback control law relating the induced bending moments with the kinematical response quantities appropriately selected is used, and its beneficial effects, considered in conjunction with that of the beam anisotropy and structural pretwist upon the eigenvibration characteristics are highlighted

  • This research is concerned with the modeling technique and active vibration controller design for slewing smart structures. When cantilever beam rotates about axes perpendicular to the undeformed beam's longitudinal axis, it experiences inertial loading. Hence, the beam vibrates from the initial stage of slewing, In this paper, the analytical model for a single slewing flexible beam with surface bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator is developed using the Hamilton's principle with discretization by the assumed mode method. It is found from experiments that the theoretical model lacks the frictional effect. The frictional effect is incorporated into the equations of motion by employing the coupling factor. Theoretical and experimental results show problems arising in modeling and controller design.

  • This paper presents an autonomous acceleration planning algorithm for pedestrian collision avoidance at urban. Various scenarios between pedestrians and a vehicle are designed to maneuver the planning algorithm. To simulate the scenarios, we analyze pedestrian's behavior and identify limitations of fusion sensors, lidar and vision camera. Acceleration is optimally determined by considering TTC (Time To Collision) and pedestrian's intention. Pedestrian's crossing intention is estimated for quick control decision to minimize full-braking situation, based on their velocity and position change. Feasibility of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulations using Carsim and Simulink, and comparisons with actual driving data.

  • In this study, a motion control problem for the vessels towed by tugboats or towing ships on the sea is considered. The towed vessels, such as barge ships, are used for several purposes. Generally, these vessels have no power propulsion system and are towed using ropes and towing vessel (tugboats). The basic mathematical model of the towed vessel in which three active rudders are attached was introduced from a previous study. Owing to the dependency of the motions of the towed vessel to the towing ship, a method is suggested to cope with the undesirable disturbance and improve the tracking performance. For the simulation study, a model of the towed vessel with a towing ship is made, and necessary physical parameters are identified from the experiment. For the defined and linearized model, a control system is designed, and the control performance is also evaluated. A simulation study is conducted and the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified.

  • Irreparable massive rotator cuff tears cause pain, loss of function, and a decrease in range of motion, which cause serious disturbances in daily life. Young patients, in particular, are active and have relatively high functional requirements, and their surgical options are limited. Superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) was first proposed for irreparable massive rotator cuff tears, good clinical results have been reported in short-term follow up. Since then, SCR has been used increasingly worldwide for irreparable massive rotator cuff tears, and various studies have been published on clinical outcomes, biomechanical outcomes, surgical techniques, and graft types. This article reviews the optimal graft and surgical options for improving clinical outcomes in SCR.

  • The objective of this study was to purpose korean medicine treatment for paraplegia and hypoesthesia after spinal cord infarction, and report its effectiveness. We treated a 74-year-old male patient diagnosed with spinal cord infarction using various methods, including acupuncture, herbal medication, moxibustion, physical therapy, western medication. We evaluated patient's motor ability using the manual muscle test (MMT), active range of motion (AROM), walking index for spinal cord injury II( WISCI II) and sense ability using International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI). After treatment, motor and sense ability of patient was improved after treatment. The MMT, AROM, WISCI II scores and ISNCSCI scores were numerically improved. According to these results, this study suggested effectiveness of combined Korean medical treatment for spinal cord infarction. However, More studies are required in the future.

  • Active upwelling air motion in every summer over the Tibetan plateau is an essential process controlling activities of asian summer monsoon which affects water cycle and precipitation in eastern Asia. Large heating rate of surface air on the high plateau with average height of 4000m is considered to cause such large scale upwelling over the plateau. (omitted)

  • Femoral nerve injuries are devastating injuries that lead to paralysis of the quadriceps muscles, weakening knee extension to prohibit ambulation. We report a devastating case of electrical injury-induced femoral neuropathy, where no apparent site of nerve disruption can be identified, thus inhibiting the traditional choices of nerve reconstruction such as nerve repair, grafting, or transfer. Concomitant spinal cord injury resulted in spastic myopathy of the antagonist muscles that further restricted knee extension. Our strategy was to perform (1) supercharge end-to-side technique (SETS) to augment the function of target muscles and (2) fractional tendon lengthening to release the spastic muscles. Dramatic postoperative improvement in passive and active range of motion highlights the effectiveness of this strategy to manage partial femoral nerve injuries.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of hominis placenta pharmacopuncture and chuna manual therapy in patients with frozen shoulder. Methods: Frozen shoulder was treated with hominis placenta pharmacopuncture and chuna manual therapy, and the overall shoulder pain was measured by visual analog scale (VAS), and the range of motion (ROM) of shoulder movement was evaluated by measuring passive abduction and external rotation and active hand to shoulder blade test. Results: After the treatment, overall shoulder pain was reduced, and ROM of passive abduction and external rotation was increased. Conclusions: The above results show that hominis placenta pharmacopuncture and chuna manual therapy can be used as an effective treatment for frozen shoulder.
