  • This paper presents human-in-the-loop evaluations of vehicle stability control(VSC) system using a driving simulator. A driving simulator which contains full vehicle nonlinear model is evaluated by using actual vehicle test data on the same driving conditions. Braking control inputs for Vehicle Stability Control system have been directly derived from the sliding control law based on vehicle planar motion equations with differential braking. Closed-loop simulation results at realistic driving situations have shown that the proposed controller reduces driving effort of a driver and enhances stability of a vehicle.

  • This paper experimentally deals with the excitation by functional electrical stimulus(FES) and the response of electromyo-potential at the muscles of antebrachial joint in a human body. The excitation of FES, which results in the contraction of the muscles and thus the flection of the joint, shows that the flection angle of the joint is proportional to the magnitude of the stimulus current. The response of electromyo-potential measured according to the FES shows the linearly-proportional relation between the joint torque and the electromyo-potential. The results can be used for active motion of joint rehabilitation.

  • Active control of flexural vibrations of smart laminated composite beams has been carried out using piezoceramic sensor/actuator and viscoelastic material. The beams with passive constrained layer damping hale been analyzed by formulating the equations of motion through the use of extended Hamilton's principle. The dynamic characteristics such as damping ratio and modal damping of the beam are calculated for various fiber orientations by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity.

  • This paper presents an active position control of a moving table utilizing ER(electro-rheological) brake and ER clutch. A transformer oil-based ER fluid is composed and its Bingham properties are evaluated with respect to electric fields. The dynamics of the actuators : ER brake and ER clutch, are identified through experiments, and subsequently the governing equation of motion of the moving table system is formulated from the governing equation, a sliding mode controller is designed to achieve an accurate position control. Both simulation and experimental results and presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methodology.

  • In electrostatic suspension system of thin plates like a silicon wafer or an aluminum disk for hard disk applications, the lateral restoring force exerted on a suspended object plays an important role since the lateral motion of the suspended object, owing to the inherently stable restoring forces, can be passively stabilized without any active control of it. This paper reports about the measurement apparatus of the lateral restoring force originating from a relative translation of the suspended object with respect to the electrodes-for-suspension. An approximate calculation of the lateral force in disk-shaped objects, the structure of the measurement apparatus, a measurement method, stabilization condition and the guideline in designing the measurement apparatus are described. Experimental results obtained by using a 3.5-inch aluminum disk as a suspended object are presented as well in order to assess the magnitude of lateral force and stiffness, and also verify the usefulness of the measurement apparatus.

  • This paper aims at demonstrating the feasibility of active control of beams with a multiobjective state-feedback control technique. The multiobjective state-feedback controller is designed on a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach for the multiobjective synthesis. The design objectives are to achieve a mix of Hoo performance and H2 performance satisfying constraints on the closed-loop pole locations in the face of model uncertainties. The controller is also designed to reject the effects of the noise and external of disturbances. For the theoretical analysis, the governing equation of motion is derived by Hamilton's principle to describe the dynamics of a smart structural system. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the integrated robust controller in damping out the multiple vibration modes of the piezo/beam system.

  • This paper presents a robust and superior control performance of a quarter-vehicle electrorheological (ER) suspension system. In order to achieve this goal, a moving sliding mode control algorithm is adopted, and its moving strategy is tuned by fuzzy logic. As a first step, ER damper is designed and manufactured for a passenger vehicle suspension system, and its field-dependent damping force is experimentally evaluated. After formulating the governing equation of motion for the quarter-vehicle ER suspension system, a stable sliding surface and moving algorithm based on fuzzy logic are formulated. The fuzzy moving sliding mode controller is then constructed and experimentally implemented. Control performances of the ER suspension system are evaluated in both time and frequency domains.

  • The VDC(Vehicle Dynamics Control) is a control system whose target is to improve vehicle stability under critical motion. The system has a good potential of becoming a standard active safety unit in passenger vehicles since it can be implemented on top of the ABS/TCS system with little extra cost. This, however, is possible only when the signals that the VDC system demands can be obtained with sufficient accuracy. In this research, estimators for the road friction coefficient and body sideslip angle have been designed. The two variables have great influence upon performance of the VDC system but not directly measurable. For the estimator design, the Newton method and the nonlinear observer theory have been exploited. The performance of the estimator have been verified via simulations on critical driving conditions.

  • Oseltamivir, also known as Tamifu, is an inhibitor of neuraminidase protein which plays an essential role in proliferation and replication of influenza virus. Binding to the active site of neuraminidase, the oseltamivir prevents the protein from enzyme reaction. Conformational change of the protein(neuraminidase) should be accompanied by the enzyme reaction, but the drug inhibits the protein to deform. In this study, we examine the influence of oseltamivir on protein's conformational change in the structural and mechanical point of view. Finite element analysis of the protein can be an useful approach to investigate the influence of oseltamivir on the deformation of a protein. We suggest the finite element based protein model, and then perform the linear static analysis with the displacement loading condition based on the first two largest motion which can be obtained from the normal mode analysis. The results show that it takes more energy to change shape of the protein with an oseltamivir attached than the protein without an oseltamivir.
