  • Recently, much interest on mesoporous carbon has been shown in their use for both hydrogen and methane storage and as an electrode material for electric double layer capacitors. The mesoporous active carbons by ion exchange were prepared and physical properties such as specific surface area and pore structure of active carbon were investigated using BET. In this study, active carbons with mesopore fraction of $60{\sim}90%$ were obtained. The Fe/Ca-exchanged active carbons showed a greater mesoporosity compared with Fe-exchanged carbons. The mean mesopore size in active carbons using Ca- and Fe-exchange was about $5.5{\sim}6.0nm$ and was approximately 1nm higher than that of the Fe-exchanged active carbon.

  • This research exposes the process of carbonization of solid waste from the city and the method of activated, as well as the process of meso-porous under several test conditions. In addition, it is expected that the active carbon obtained through this process can be used as filter for air and sewage treatment, and can absorb dioxin(as almost 60-80% of meso-porous and porous properties area) unlike the existing active carbon.

  • Spherical active carbon materials have been used for the removal of pollutants in the area of food processing, water treatment, air purification, oral administration. Moreover, they are now expected to make an epoch in the areas of electronics, life science, environmental technology, and so on due to their superior physical properties. Carbon particles should be requested for the edgeless spherical shapes in order to minimize the loss due to the abrasion during the process and/or practical use, but the carbon particles manufactured from petroleum-based pitch do not meet these needs. Nowadays, thus, the spherical active carbon particles carbonized from various spherical polymer beads are studied with thermoplastic and/or thermosetting polymers. In this paper, the synthesis of spherical phenolic beads and furan beads, which are thermosetting polymers, and their carbonization techniques are examined.

  • Various active carbons were made from plant sources of coconut shell, pine tree, oak tree and lignite coal. Pore characteristics of these adsorbents were investigated. 1, With increasing activation time, specific surface area and pore volume increased, but the development of micropores was limited at a certain level. The average pore diameter, by BET, of coconut active carbon was 15.5-21.8$\AA$ and that of lignite carbon was 15.6-31.3$\AA$. The pore diameters of silica-gel, sepiolite and zeolite was 30.9$\AA$, 58.6$\AA$ and 55.7$\AA$, respectively. 2. The Horvath - Kawazoe micropore diameter of coconut shell active carbon was under 10.5$\AA$ and that of the other active carbon was under 20.9$\AA$ but silica-gel 33$\AA$, sepiolite 103 $\AA$ and zeolite was unexpectedly large to be 175$\AA$. From the difference between BET micropore diameter and Howath - Kawazoe diameter, it could be said that silica - gel has comparatively uniform pore diameter but sepiolite and zeolite have very uneven diameter. 3. Total pore volume of coconut shell active carbon was 0.27-1.04 cm3/g but that of the other active carbon, 0.23-0.62 cm3/g, was much lower than that of coconut shell active carbon. Hydrophilic adsorbent silica - gel and sepiolite showed big difference in specific surface area, but pore volumes of these were 0.47 and 0.56 cm3/g showing similar value and micropore volumes of these were, respectively, 0.06 cm3/g and 0.04 cm3/g. Total pore volume of zeolite was 0.1 cm3/g and that of micropore was only 0.02 cm3/g.

  • Inhibitory activity of pesticide-preventing active carbon fiber mask on the penetrations in pesticide spray and its inhibitory effect on acute inhalation toxicity in rats were s tudied. Pesticides were sprayed into box ($1.O{\times}1.2{\tmies}O.6\;m$) at a dose of 20ml/min of diazinon ($Diatone^{TM}$) suspension (340ppm) and 5g/min of BPMC powder (2.0%) for 4 hours, and then captured the penetrated pesticides into water via mask in box under 8l/sec suction. The pesticides were analysed by A.O.A.C. method and GC/MS. Pesticide-preventing active carbon fiber mask significantly inhibited the penetration of diazinon by 93.4% as compared with control, and cotton mask and pesticide-preventing mask did it by 74.2% and 83.7%,respectively. This result shows that pesticide-preventing active carbon fiber mask has the most prominent inhibitory effect in preventing the penetration of diazinone. In the penetration of BPMC, all of three masks, such as active carbon fiber mask, cotton mask and pesticide-preventing mask, have a similar inhibitory effect, which were 99.3%, 98.6% and 97.0%, respectively. The penetrated pesticides via pesticide-preventmg active carbon fiber mask did not exert acute inhalation toxicity.

  • Nano Pd spot-coated active carbon powders were synthesized by a hydrothermal-attachment method (HAA) using PVP capped Pd colloid in a high pressure bomb at $250^{\circ}C$, 450 psi, respectively. The PVP capped Pd colloid was synthesized by the precipitation-redispersion method. PVP capped Pd nano particles showed the narrow size distribution and their particle sizes were less than 8nm in diameter. In the case of nano Pd-spot coated active carbon powders, nano-sized Pd particles were adhered in the active carbon powder surface by HAA method. The component of Pd was homogeneously distributed on the active carbon surface.

  • The adsorption characteristics of active carbon used as a cartridge filler of organic vapor respirator were examined by humidity, particle size, challenge concentration and specific surface area. As a result, the 1% breakthrough time of Carbon Tetrachloride($CCl_4$) was decreased with increase of relative humidity, challenge concentration and particle size (0.6~2.0mm) of active carbon. The adsorbed amount of $CCl_4$ was about 1. 1mg/$m^2$ at RH 40% and 0. 5mg/$m^2$ at RH 80% . However in the case of prehumidified active carbon, humidity did not affected to 1% breakthrough time up to RH 40%.

  • Photo-capacitor electrodes are attracting great attention because of their high capacitance and potential applications in electronic devices. Carbon capacitor, active carbon capacitor and its combination will be fabricated using a sandwich method as carbonaceous material on each type of storable electrode with $20{\times}15$[mm] cell size. Carbon/active carbon cell was fabricated using sol-gel process with $120[^{\circ}C]$ dry temperature in 2hour and using sintering process with $500[^{\circ}C]$ in 2hour. The effect of sintering temperature on carbon properties was also investigated with an X-ray diffraction technique to get the best sintering temperature. The detail of the fabrication process will be explained. Active carbon as carbonaceous material has a better capacitance in storable electrode with mean thickness $32[{\mu}m]$ and with particle size $1[{\mu}m]$ to $4.5[{\mu}m]$ in $20{\times}15$[mm] sample size of storable electrode.

  • Metal ions such as Cu and Cr were extracted from the Cu, Cr and Ag impregnated active carbon by contacting the solid surfaces with supercritical carbon dioxide(Sc-$CO_2$) containing chelating agents. About 10g of the active carbon sample were loaded in a vertical tube extractor contacting with $CO_2$ flowing from the bottom of the tube for 6hrs. The ligands used were acetyl acetone(AA) and Cyanex-302(C-302). Water and methanol were used as entrainers to study the effect of co-solvent to $CO_2$. Experimental results showed that C-302 was more effective than AA in removing Cu with the maximum extraction of 42.0wt%, while 57.6wt% of Cr was extracted with AA from the sample.
