  • Tetrahymena pyriformis is a free-living ciliate protozoan in the freshwater system. Experiments were carried out to determine whether intraperitoneal administration of T. pyriformis (GL strain) to mice activates macrophages to be able to kill Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites in vitro. Mice were also injected intraperitoneally with several synthetic activators; dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DDA), dextran sulfate, complete Freund's adjutant (CFA) as well as Toxoplasma and Tetrehymena Iysates in order to activate mouse peritoneal macrophages. One week after the administration of activators, peritoneal cells were harvested and the adherent macrophages were challenged with Toxoplasma tachyzoites. Macrophage monolayers were then fixed with absolute methanol after washing, and stained with Giemsa solution. The percentage of the adherent cells infected and total number of organisms per 100 macrophages were calculated to make toxoplasma-cidal activity of macrophages according to the cultivation time. Peritoneal macrophages from mice administered with Tetrahymena exhibited significant protection against target parasites as compared with those treated with synthetic activators. Among non-biological synthetic activators, DDA was evaluated as an ellcellent activator.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the properties of hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars(EMMs) using ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS) and alkali activators. The hardener-free EMMs with a GGBFS content of 20% using 4 types of alkali activators were prepared with various polymer-binder ratios, and tested for strengths, water absorption, carbonation depth, chloride ion and H2SO4 penetration depth. The conclusions obtained from the test results are summarized as follows: The compressive strength of the EMMs with a GGBFS content of 20% attains a maximum at a polymer-binder ratio of 10%. The flexural strength of the hardener-free EMMs using Ca(OH)2 as a alkali activator is improved with increasing polymer-binder ratios. However, the flexural strength of the EMMs using NaCO3, Na2SO4 and Li2CO3 is gradually decreased with increasing polymer-binder ratios. Regardless of the type of alkali activator, the water absorption, chloride ion penetration and carbonation depth are remarkably decreased with increasing polymer-binder ratios due to the epoxy film formed in the EMMs. The H2SO4 penetration depth of the hardener-free EMMs with a GGBFS content of 20% is gradually increased with increasing polymer-binder ratio. In this study, the properties of hardener-free EMMs using Ca(OH)2 as a alkali activator are more excellent than those of other alkali activators.

  • The present study assessed the micro structure and durability characteristics of ternary blended cement with different types of alkali activators. Ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS) and ferronickel slag(FNS) was replaced until 50 % of the weight of cement. In addition, potassuim hydroxide and sodium hydroxide were used for comparing the properties of different type of alkali activator. Ternary blended cement with alkali activators showed higher peak portlandite peak than that of OPC(Ordinary Portlande Cement) and non activated ternary blended cement. Also, there was no new hydration products in ternary blended cement or/and alkali activators. Based on the mercury intrustion porosimetry(MIP) test result, ternary blended cement increased macro pore while alkali activated ternary blended cement modified pore structure and increased microp pore as compared to OPC as control. Combination with alkali activators is desirable to enhance the compressive strength and freeze thaw resistance.

  • The usage of OPC-free alkali activated ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS) mortar has been widely studied on the previous years, due to its advantages on sustainability, durability and workability. This paper brings a new view, aiming to classify the best application in situ for each mortar, according to the type and activator content. By this practical implication, more efficiency is achieved on the construction site and consequently less waste of materials. In order to compare the different activators, the following experiments were performed: analysis of compressive strength at 28 days, setting time measured by needles penetration resistance, analysis of total pore volume performed by MIP and permeability assessment by RCPT test. In general, activated GGBS had acceptable performance in all cases compared to OPC, and remarkable improved durability. Following the experimental results, it was confirmed that each activator and different concentrations impose distinct outcome performance to the mortar which allows the classification. It was observed that the activator Ca(OH)2 is the most versatile among the others, even though it has limited compressive strength, being suitable for laying mortar, coating/plaster, adhesive and grouting mortar. Samples activated with NaOH, in turn, presented in general the most similar results compared to OPC.

  • This study aimed to examine the cause of latent hydraulic property manifestation of ground granulated blast-furnace slag(GGBFS) using different alkali activators in pH, type and quantity. According to the experimental result, the higher pH value accelerated lastly latent hydraulic property and the early stage strength of GCBFS was ranked as activators with the higher pH, in an order of NaOH, $Ca(OH)_{2}$ and $Na_{2}$$Co_{3}$. Also, NaOH had accelerated latent hydraulic property of GGBFS, which had 40~50% of the 3 and 7 days compressive strength of base mortar in case of using 10% of powder-weight. In the case of 30% of GGBFS substitution with annexing 2.5% $Ca(OH)_{2}$, the compressive strength on the 3 and 7 days of the early-age, was increased to 5~10% than that of the same admixture with no activator. With annexing 5.0% $Ca(OH)_{2}$, the strength was increased to 10~20%. Although activator NaOH was effective on the manifestation of latent hydraulic property, it caused cement mortar compressive strength decrease by enlarging pore diameter.

  • Portland cement has been restricted in applications to ecological area because of its environmental harmfulness and the $CO_2$ emission during a production process. Geopolymer materials attract some attention as an inorganic binder due to their superior mechanical and eco-friendly properties. In this study, geopolymer-based cement was prepared by using aluminosilicate minerals (flyash, meta-kaolin) with alkaline-activators and its compressive strength with concentration of alkaline-activators was investigated. Aluminosilicate-based geopolymers were obtained by mixing aluminosilicate minerals, alkaline solution (NaOH or KOH with different concentration) and water-glass under the vigorous stirring for 20 min. Compressive strength after curing at $30^{\circ}C$ for 3 days increased with the concentration of alkaline-activator due to the enhanced polymerization of the aluminosilicate materials and dense microstructure. Aluminosilicate-based geopolymer cement using KOH as an alkaline-activator showed high compressive strength compared with NaOH activator. In addition, geopolymer cement using fly-ash as a raw material showed higher compressive strength than that of meta-kaolin.

  • Wool has excellent properties, such as heat retention, absorbency, and elasticity, but it has a disadvantage in washability because the fabric will felt and shrink greatly. Felting causes the interlocking of the fiber surface scales with one another. Therefore, the studies on wool finishing have been focused on shrink proofing. Precedent researches on wool shrink proofing are mostly on eco-friendly method. using enzyme. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of L-cysteine, EDTA in papain treatment of wool fabrics. The specific contents of study are as follows. Depending on pH, temperature, treatment time, enzyme concentration and L-cysteine, EDTA concentration, weight loss, tensile strength, whiteness, SEM were examined. Each papain treatment conditions depending on L-cysteine, EDTA were optimized from these properties. Papain had very low activation without activators. The optimum conditions of papain treatment were pH 7.5, temperature $75^{\circ}C$, time 30minutes(L-cysteine), 180minutes(EDTA) and papain concentration 5%(o.w.f.). In the use of papain 5%(o.w.f.), the activators optimum concentration was L-cysteine 2%(o.w.f.), EDTA 7%(o.w.f.)
