Aqueous phase adsorption of phenols by granular activated carbon was studied in a batch adsorption vessel. Adsorption Isotherms of phenol(Ph), p-chlorophenol(PCP) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) from aqueous solution on granular activated carbon have been obtained. The experimental data were analyzed by the surface and pore diffusion models. Both models could be applied to predict the adsorption phenomena. However, the pore diffusion model was slightly better than the surface diffusion model In representing the experimental data for the initial concentration changes. Therefore, the pore diffusion model was used to predict the change of operating variables such as the agitation speed and Particle size of adsorbent which have influence on the film resistance and intraparticle diffusion.
Separation of VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) in Water Using Activated Carbon is known to be effective. Activated Carbon has been and will be employed in many water treatment plants. Simplified plug flow homogeneous surface diffusion model(PFHSDM) has been used to predict adsorption of organic matter. Finite Element Method(FEM) was used to analyze the model. Out of water quality control substances, benzene, toluene and tetrachloroethylene were used in the small column test. Film diffusion coefficients and surface diffusion coefficients were obtained from the column test, and were compared with the modeling results. Mc Cune, Williamson, William and Kataoka model, were compared with film diffusion coefficients obtained in the test. McCune model was fitted best for those VOCs used in this experiment. Film diffusion coefficients of VOCs obtained were benzene 0.265 cm/min, toluene 0.348 cm/min and tetrachloroethylene 0.298 cm/min. Surface diffusion coefficients of VOCs obtained were benzene $6.36{\times}10^{-8}cm^2/min$, toluene $3.20{\times}10-8cm2/min$, and tetrachloruethylene $4.94{\times}10^{-8}cm^2/min$.

In $TiO_2$-CuO systems, low-temperature sinterability was investigated by a conventional sintering method. Sintering temperatures were set at under $950^{\circ}C$, at which the volume diffusion is inactive. The temperatures are less than the melting point of Ag ($961^{\circ}C$), which is often used as an internal conductor in low-temperature co-fired ceramic technology. To optimize the amount of CuO dopant, various dopant contents were added. The optimum level for enhanced densification was 2 wt% CuO. Excess dopants were segregated to the grain boundaries. The segregated dopants supplied a high diffusion path, by which grain boundary diffusion improved. At lower temperatures in the solid state region, grain boundary diffusion was the principal mass transport mechanism for densification. The enhanced grain boundary diffusion, therefore, improved densification. In this regard, the results of this study prove that the sintering mechanism was the same as that of activated sintering.
Adsorption equilibrium and intraparticle diffusion characteristics of benzene, toluene, and xylene vapors on activated carbon and zeolite 13X were investigated. Static adsorption experiments were carried out under the pressure range of 0.01~0.07 bar while changing the adsorption temperature to 293.15 K, 303.15 K, and 313.15 K, respectively. Adsorption equilibrium was analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Toth models. The adsorption energy was 5.26~31.0 kJ/mol representing physical adsorption characteristics. The maximum adsorption capacity on activated carbon was the largest for benzene, and the smallest for xylene. Toluene was in between. In the case of zeolite 13X, the maximum adsorption capacity was the largest for xylene, and the smallest for benzene as opposed to activated carbon. The effective diffusion coefficients of gas adsorbate were measured to be about $10^{-5}{\sim}10^{-4}cm^2/s$, and increased with temperature. As the pressure increased, the effective diffusion coefficients were decreased. The dependence of effective diffusion coefficients on temperature and pressure was greater in zeolite 13X particles than in activated carbon. Therefore, it is necessary to express the diffusion coefficients as a function of pressure in order to predict the precise dynamic behavior of the adsorption process using zeolite 13X where the pressure fluctuation occurs abruptly.

The doping of semiconducting elements is essential for the development of silicon quantum dot (QD) solar cells. Especially the doping elements should be activated by substitution at the crystalline sites in the crystalline silicon QDs. However, no analysis technique has been developed for the analysis of the activated dopants in silicon QDs in $SiO_2$ matrix. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is a powerful technique for the in-depth analysis of solid materials and the impurities analysis of boron and phosphorus in semiconductor materials. For the study of diffusion behaviour of B and P by SIMS, Si/$SiO_2$ multilayer films doped by B or P were fabricated and annealed at high temperatures for the activated doping of B and P. The distributions of doping elements were analyzed by SIMS. Boron found to be preferentially distributed in Si layer rather than the $SiO_2$ layer. Especially the B in the Si layers was separated to two components of an interfacial component and a central one. The central component was understood as the activated elements. On the other hand, phosphorus did not show any preferred diffusion.
Purpose: To develop a new diffusion-based functional MRI (fMRI) sequence to generate apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps in single excitation and evaluate the contribution of b0 signal on neuronal changes. Materials and Methods: A diffusion-based fMRI sequence was designed with single measurement that can acquire images of three directions at a time, obtaining $b=0s/mm^2$ during the first baseline condition (b0_b), followed by 107 diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with $b=600s/mm^2$ during the baseline and visual stimulation conditions, and another $b=0s/mm^2$ during the last activation condition (b0_a). ADC was mapped in three different ways: 1) using b0_b (ADC_b) for all time points, 2) using b0_a (ADC_a) for all time points, and 3) using b0_b and b0_a (ADC_ba) for baseline and stimulation scans, respectively. The fMRI studies were conducted on the brains of 16 young healthy volunteers using visual stimulations in a 3T MRI system. In addition, the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) fMRI was also acquired to compare it with diffusion-based fMRI. A sample t-test was used to investigate the voxel-wise average between the subjects. Results: The BOLD data consisted of only activated voxels. However, ADC_ba data was observed in both deactivated and activated voxels. There were no statistically significant activated or deactivated voxels for DWI, ADC_b, and ADC_a. Conclusions: With the new sequence, neuronal activations can be mapped with visual stimulation as compared to the baseline condition in several areas in the brain. We showed that ADC should be mapped using both DWI and b0 images acquired with the same conditions.
The adsorption of disperse yellow 3 (DY 3) on granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated for isothermal adsorption and kinetic and thermodynamic parameters by experimenting with initial concentration, contact time, temperature, and pH of the dye as adsorption parameters. In the pH change experiment, the adsorption percent of DY 3 on activated carbon was highest in the acidic region, pH 3 due to electrostatic attraction between the surface of the activated carbon with positive charge and the anion (OH-) of DY 3. The adsorption equilibrium data of DY 3 fit the Langmuir isothermal adsorption equation best, and it was found that activated carbon can effectively remove DY 3 from the calculated separation factor (RL). The heat of adsorption-related constant (B) from the Temkin equation did not exceed 20 J mol-1, indicating that it is a physical adsorption process. The pseudo second order kinetic model fits well within 10.72% of the error percent in the kinetic experiments. The plots for Weber and Morris intraparticle diffusion model were divided into two straight lines. The intraparticle diffusion rate was slow because the slope of the stage 2 (intraparticle diffusion) was smaller than that of stage 1 (boundary layer diffusion). Therefore, it was confirmed that the intraparticle diffusion was rate controlling step. The free energy change of the DY 3 adsorption by activated carbon showed negative values at 298 ~ 318 K. As the temperature increased, the spontaneity increased. The enthalpy change of the adsorption reaction of DY 3 by activated carbon was 0.65 kJ mol-1, which was an endothermic reaction, and the entropy change was 2.14 J mol-1 K-1.
Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of operating parameters such as the temperature, initial concentration, contact time and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption of antibiotics amoxicillin (AMX) by waste citrus peel based activated carbon (WCAC). The kinetics and isotherm experiment data can be well described with the pseudo-second order model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of AMX by WCAC calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model was 125 mg/g. The adsorption of AMX by WCAC shows that the film diffusion (external mass transfer) and the intraparticle diffusion occur simultaneously during the adsorption process. The adsorption rate is more influenced by the intraparticle diffusion than that of the external mass transfer as the particle size of WCAC increases, and the intraparticle diffusion is the rate controlling step. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption reaction of AMX by WCAC was an endothermic and spontaneous process.
The mechanism of activated sintering of tungsten powder was discussed in terms of diffusion and segregation of activator atoms at W grain boundaries. Shrinkage behaviours of W-0.2wt.% Ni, W-0.2wt.% Cu or pure W powder compacts during sintering at low temperatures of 900~ $1200^{\circ}C$ were investigated. It was found that the Cu additive inhibits sintering process causing lower densification than pure W compact while remarkable shrinkage occurred in the Ni added W powder. Such contrary effect was explained by comparing self diffusion processes along Ni or Cu segregated W boundaries in which Ni segregants enhance but Cu atoms retard the migration of W atoms at W boundaries.
Adsorption process using granular activated carbon(GAC) has been considered as one of the most effective water treatment technologies to remove humic acid which is recon- niEed as trihalomethane(THM) precursor in chlorination. To design the most effective GAC process, it is necessary to conduct the test of adsor- ption performance by means of isothem, batch rate and column studies and to select the most effective activated carbon according to raw materials of GAC - lignite and coconut shell. The objective of this study is to investigate the adsorption performance of humid acid on two activated carbons - lignite activated carbon(LAC) and coconut shell activated car- bon(CAC) made in Korea. It is available to represent UV-abs and trihalomethane formation potential(THMFP) as concentration of humic acid due to good relationship. The adsorption capacity of humid acid is not concerned with surface area of activated carbon but with pore size related to about $100{\AA}$, and then LAC forming at the extent of mesopore is found to be eight times more effective in adsorption capacity than CAC forming at micropore. The adsorption capacity of LAC and CAC is better at pH 5.5 than at pH 7. Pore and surface diffusion coefficients calculated from the diffusion model are $7.61\times10^{-13}m^2/sec$, $3.52\times10^{-15}m^2/sec$ for CAC, and $3.38\times10^{-12}m^2$/sec and $Ds=1.48{\times}10^{-15}m^2/sec$ for GAC respectively. From the results of column test it shows that the performance of LAC is also better than CAC and the optimal EBCT(Empty Bed Contact Time) is 4.52min. and activated carbon removes selectively the components of humic acid to be easily formed to THM.
