  • This study was performed to investigate the recovery efficacy of 2-methylisobomeol (2-MIB) and Geosmin, odor contaminants produced by algae, by pretreatment techniques, and also to investigate both adsorption characteristics and removal efficiency to get some information for the effective removal of 2-MIB and Geosmin by batch experiments. In pretreatment experiments, the best recovery efficiency of both odorants at 0.2 and $2\;{\mu}g/L$ in raw water was 30 mL of sampling size, 9 g NaCl for salting out headspace of sampling phase and 40 minutes of adsorption. At the best condition, the recovery efficiency of 2-MIB was 85% at $0.2\;{\mu}g/L$ and 95% at $2\;{\mu}g/L$, whereas the efficiency of Geosmin was lower than that of 2-MIB : 61% at $0.2\;{\mu}g/L$ and 81% at $2\;{\mu}g/L$. In batch experiments, the removal efficiency of the Geosmin and 2-MIB by adsorbents using distilled water were increased in comparison with raw water, the efficiency in raw water was little different by their concentrations. When these results were applied to the Freundrich adsorption isotherm, the K value of 2-MIB for zeolite, coal activated carbon, and coconut activated carbon was 0.671, 1.811, and 1.340, respectively, and the value of Geosmin was 0.6125, 1.771, and 1.5191, respectively. Thus the adsorption efficiency of 2-MIB and Geosmin was in the order of zeolite, coconut activated carbon, coal activated carbon.

  • To remove the low concentration of methane biologically, a three phase fluidized bed bioreactor immobilized with Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b was used. Optimum pH, temperature and bed height for the operation were pH7.0, 30$^\circ C$ and 150cm, respectively. For the inlet methane concentration of 100-400ppm and flow rate of 2-4L/min, the removal efficiencies of the bioreactor using the activated carbon as a carrier were the range of 54-71%, whereas those using the biosand were the range of 45-56%. It was found that activated carbon was more efficient than the biosand for the removal of methane. When aeration tank was equipped with the bioreactor, the removal efficiency increased to 6-13% and maximum removal rate obtained in the experiment was 1184mg.CH$_4$/min.

  • A pilot scale study for removing odor and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) was investigated in the standard water treatment plant equipped with ozone oxidation and granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption processes. The removal efficiency of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the pilot scale standard water treatment process (PSWTP) was about 25%, however, no more removal in the ozone oxidation process. On a GAC after 30 days operation, DOC removal efficiency was about 75%. Odor removal efficiency was about 30% in PSWTP, 60% in ozone oxidation, and almost complete in well as DOC. Mid-1 and 2 that showed breakthrough in odor inducing material as well as DOC. Mid-1 and 2 chlorination was able to reduce trihalomethanes (THM) by 25% compared to prechloringation, while postchlorination alone could reduce them by 30%.

  • The electro-chemical removal (ECR) of water pollutants by metal-ACF electrodes from wastewater was investigated over wide range of ECR time. The ECR capacities of metallic ACF electrodes were related to physical properties such as adsorption isotherm, surface area and pore size and to reaction time. Surface morphologies and elemental analysis for the metal supported ACFs after electro-catalytic reaction were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperse X-ray (EDX) to explain the changes in adsorption properties. The IR spectra of metallic ACFs for the investigation of functional groups show that the electro-catalytic treatment is consequently associated with the removal of pollutants with the increasing surface reactivity of the activated carbon fibers. The metal-ACFs were electro-catalytically reacted to waste water to investigate the removal efficiency for the COD, T-N, $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N and $NO_2$-N. From these removal results of the piggery waste using metallic ACFs substrate, satisfactory removal performance was achieved. The removal efficiency of the metallic ACFs substrate was mainly determined by the properties of the material for adsorption and trapping of organics, and catalytic effects.

  • This study was performed to delineate the removal phenol in solutions using of ozone, ozone/$H_2O_2$ and ozone/GAC. The disinfection by-product of phenol by ozonation, hydroquinone, was analyzed and it's control process was investigated. The followings are the conclusions that were derived from this study. 1. The removal efficiency of phenol by ozonation was 58.37%, 48.34%, 42.15%, and 35.41% which the initial concentration of phenol was 5 mg/l, 10 mg/l, 15 mg/l, and 20 mg/l, respectively. 2. The removal efficiency of phenol by ozonation was 42.95% at pH 4.0 and 69.39% at pH 10, respectively. The removal efficiencies were gradually increased, as pH values were increased. 3. With the ozone/$H_2O_2$ combined system, the removal efficiency of phenol was 72.87%. It showed a more complete degradation of phenol with ozone/$H_2O_2$ compared with ozone alone. 4. When ozonation was followed by filtration on GAC, phenol was completely removed. 5. Oxidation, if carried to completion, truly destroys the organic compounds, converting them to carbon dioxide. Unless reaction completely processed, disinfection by-products would be produced. To remove them, ozone/GAC treatment was used. The results showed that disinfection by-product of phenol by ozonation, hydroquinone, was completely removed. These results suggested that ozone/GAC should also be an appropriate way to remove phenol and its by-product.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the removal behaviors of DOM(dissolved organic matter) and phosphorus in eutrophic lake water by coagulation process with PAC(powdered activated carbon). It was observed that the removal characteristic of soluble matter was different from that of dissolved one, and the removal of DOM was effected by both pH and coagulant dosage. It was founded that PAC could increase the removal efficiency by an adsorption of DOM in coagulation process. A formation of soluble and colloidal matters resulted in the degradation of phosphorus removal efficiency in a chemical precipitation process. The phosphorus removal efficiency could be enhanced by an absorption of colloidal matter and dissolved complex with PAC addition. In addition, the PAC addition caused the increase of floc density in coagulation process, that led to the rise of sedimentation rate, and resulted in a significant improvement of solid-liquid separation efficiency.

  • In this study, the removal efficiency of PFCs(perfluorinated compounds) in the GAC(granule activated carbon) process based on the superheated steam automatic regeneration system was investigated in laboratory scale and pilot-scale reactor. Among PFCs, PFHxS(perfluorohexyl sulfonate) was most effectively removed. The removal efficiency of PFCs was found to be closely related to the EBCT, and the removal efficiencies of PFOA(perfluorooctanoic acid), PFOS(perfluorooctyl sulfonate), and PFHxS were 43.7, 75, and 100%, respectively, under the condition of EBCT of 6 min. Afterward, PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS exhibited the earlier breakthrough time in the order. After that, GAC was regenerated, and the removal efficiency of the PFCs before and after regeneration was compared. As a result, it was shown that the PFCs removal efficiency in the regenerated GAC process were higher, and that of PFOA was improved to 75%. The findings of this study indicate the feasibility of the superheated steam automatic regeneration system for the stable removal of the PFCs, and it was verified that this technology can be applied stably enough even in field conditions.

  • Treatment performance and microbial community structure were investigated in water-soluble cutting oil treatment process using biological activated carbon. DOC removal in BACI column at $15^{\circ}C$ was higher than at $25^{\circ}C$, but those of BAC3 column after 60days was high at$25^{\circ}C$. Also, quinone content of first-step reactors at $25^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$ was much the same, but those of the third-step reactor at $25^{\circ}C$ was higher than at $15^{\circ}C$. The dominant type of two apparatus was ubquinone (UQ)-l 0 followed by UQ-8. Menaquinones were detected from $25^{\circ}C$ apparatus and effluent. This suggested that DOC removal at $25^{\circ}C$ was advanced degradation by attached microorganisms on the activated carbon surface. The DOC removal in long-term activated carbon apparatus increased with going in BAC3 column. This indicated the influent of POC was a result of DOC removal efficiency decrease. Integrated DOC removal from start point in experiment to break point and quinone content were showed a tendency of increasing with going last-step activated carbon apparatus. Therefore, the biological activated carbon apparatus used by this study was effective treatment process in contaminated groundwater by water-soluble cutting oil.

  • A biofiltration system using activated carbon/polyurethane composite as solid support inoculated with Bacillus sp. was developed for treating a gaseous stream containing high concentrations of H$_2$S. The effects of operating condition such as the influent H$_2$S concentration and the empty bed contact time (EBCT) on the removal efficiency of H$_2$S were investigated. The biofilter showed the stable removal efficiencies of over 99 % under the EBCT range from 15 to 60 sec at the 300 ppmv of H$_2$S inlet concentration. When the inlet concentration of H$_2$S was increased, the removal efficiencies decreased, reaching 95 and 74%, at EBCTs of 10 and 7.5 sec, respectively. The maximum elimination capacity in the biofilter packed with activated carbon/polyurethane composite media was 157 g/m$^3$/hr.
