  • This study targets the pollutant removal of secondary effluent from final clarifiers in wastewater treatment plant using silver nanoparticles on activated carbon. The removal efficiency and treatment characteristics of pollutant are anlayzed by perfoming experiments using granular activated carbon with silver nanoparticles and ordinary granular activated carbon. The specific surface area of granular activated carbon with silver nanoparticles is smaller than that of ordinary granular activated carbon. However, the removal efficiency of $COD_{Mn}$, T-N and T-P in experiments using activated carbon with silver nanoparticles are higher than that in experiment using ordinary granular activated carbon. That means the case of activated carbon with silver nanoparticles is much better at treatment activity. In addition, activated carbon with silver nanoparticles has antimicrobial activity because there is no microbe on the surface of it after experiments.

  • The Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences plans to produce 225Ac, a therapeutic radio-pharmaceutical for precision oncology, such as prostate cancer. Radon, a radioactive gas, is generated by radium, the target material for producing 225Ac. The radon concentration is expected to be about 2000 Bq·m-3. High-concentration radon-generating facilities must meet radioactive isotope emission standards by lowering the radon concentration. However, most existing studies concerning radon removal using activated carbon filters measured radon levels at concentrations lower than 1000 Bq·m-3. This study measured 222Rn removal of coconut-based activated carbon filter under a high radon concentration of about 2000 Bq·m-3. The 222Rn removal efficiency of activated carbon impregnated with triethylenediamine was also measured. As a result, the 222Rn removal amount of the activated carbon filter showed sufficient removal efficiency in a 222Rn concentration environment of about 2000 Bq·m-3. In addition, despite an expectation of low radon reduction efficiency of Triethylenediamine-impregnated activated carbon, it was difficult to confirm a significant difference in the results. Therefore, it is considered that activated carbon can be used as a radioisotope exhaust filter regardless of whether or not Triethylenediamine is impregnated. The results of this study are expected to be used as primary data when building an air purification system for radiation safety management in facilities with radon concentrations of about 2000 Bq·m-3.

  • A study of the treatment of piggery wastes using a multilayered metal-activated carbon system followed by carbon bed filtration was carried out at bench scale. From the physicochemical properties obtained from samples treated with aqueous solutions containing metallic ions such as Ag$^+$, Cu$^{2+}$, Na$^{-}$, K$^+$ and Mn$^{2+}$, main inspections are subjected to isothem shape, pore distribution with micropore, SEM and EDX. Multilayered metal-activated carbons were contacted to waste water to inwestigate the simultaneous catalytic effect for the COD, BOD, T-N and T-P removal. From these removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed, satisfactory removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed was derermined by the properties of this material for trapping, catalytic effect and adsorption of organic solid particles.

  • Composite adsorbents were prepared by mixing water plant sludge with phenolic resin having the ratio of 1 : 1, 1 : 2, and 1 : 3 respectively, curing from $100^{\circ}C$ to $170^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ atmosphere, and then activating with $N_2$ at $700^{\circ}C$. Thermal property, specific surface area and morphology of the composite adsorbents as well as their precursors were measured by TGA, BET and SEM respectively. Removal efficiency of the composite adsorbents to ${NH_4}^+$ and TOC was compared with those of commercial zeolite and activated carbon. The adsorbents presented very promising TOC removal efficiency of 98%, which was identical level to that of commercial activated carbon while they displayed removal efficiency, only 32%, of ${NH_4}^+$. Therefore, this composite adsorbent considered as the alternative material of commercial activated carbon, used as an expensive removal agent of organic substances and THM in water treatment plant and it also suggested a possibility of practical application in other processes.

  • A laboratory experiment was performed to invstigate the nitrate removal using FeCl$_3$ -treated activated carbon. Iron chloride(III) was coated onto the surface of activated carbon. The removal efficiency of nitrate was increased with increasing of FeCl$_3$ was used for coating material. About 22~26mg of Fe per unit g of activated carbon was adsorbed. The nitrate removal was not affected by the pH under the experiment range of pH, but the pH value in solution decrease to 3.5~4.0 after reaction. The removal efficiency of nitrate was increased with increasing of dosage of adsorbents. Ammonia was not detected and the Fe concentration as low as 0.22mg/$\ell$ was desorbed from the adsorbents. The adsorbents was regenerated using KCl solution, and recovery was 76.6% at 1 M of KCl. The adsorption of nitrate by FeCl$_3$-treated activated carbon followed the Freundlich isotherm equation and the Freundlich constant, 1/n, was 0.346. These results showed that the FeCl$_3$-treated activated carbon could serve as the basis of a useful nitrate removal.

  • This study evaluates the efficiency of sodium ion removal using capacitive deionization electrodes made from activated carbon synthesized from aminated rice husk and commercialized activated carbon derived from coconut shell. Composite 1 electrodes, with a 1:1 ratio of activated carbon synthesized from aminated rice husk to commercialized activated carbon, and Composite 2 electrodes, with a 2:1 ratio, were prepared and analyzed for structural changes using SEM and surface area analysis. Sodium ion removal efficiency was assessed over time by varying the composition and voltage of the activated carbon. Composite 2, with a higher activated carbon synthesized from aminated rice husk ratio, demonstrated the highest efficiency, achieving up to 75% removal at 1.2 V. Reusability tests showed that the electrodes maintained over 65% efficiency after seven cycles.

  • Based on the previous results of the equilibrium and batch adsorptions, the removal efficiency of the two-step surface-modified activated carbon ($2^{nd}AC$) for heavy metal ions such as Pb, Cd, and Cr in fixed column was evaluated by comparing with that of the as-received activated carbon (AC) and the first surface-modified activated carbon ($1^{st}AC$). The order of metal removal efficiency was found as $2^{nd}AC$ > $1^{st}AC$ $\gg$ AC, and the efficiency of the $2^{nd}AC$ maintained over 98% from the each metal solution. Increase of the removal efficiency by the second surface modification was contributed to maintain favorable pH condition of bulk solution during adsorption process. The removal of the heavy metals on the $2^{nd}AC$ was selective with Pb being removed in preference to Cr and Cd in multicomponent solutions and slightly influenced by phenol as the organic material.

  • In this work, a nickel metal (Ni) electroplating on the activated carbon fiber (Ni/ACFs) surfaces was carried out to remove the toxic hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas. The surface properties of the treated ACFs were determined by using nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K, SEM, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. HCl removal efficiency was confirmed by a gas-detecting tube technique. As a result, the nickel metal contents on the ACF surfaces were increased with increasing the plating time. And, it was found that the specific surface area or the micropore volume of the ACFs studied was slightly decreased as increasing the plating time. Whereas, it was revealed that the HCl removal efficiency containing nickel metal showed higher efficiency values than that of untreated ACFs. These results indicated that the presence of nickel metal on the ACF surfaces played an important role in improving the HCl removal over the Ni/ACFs, due to the catalytic reactions between nickel and chlorine.
