The Effect of Potassium Hydroxide on the Porosity of Phenol Resin-based Activated Carbon Fiber

  • Activated carbon fiber could be prepared at 973 K by catalytic activation using potassium hydroxide. Phenol resin fiber (Kynol) was impregnated with potassium hydroxide ethanol solution, carbonized and activated at 973 K, resulting in activated carbon fibers with different porosities. The potassium hydroxide accelerated the activation of the fiber catalytically to form narrow micropore preferentially in carbon dioxide atmosphere. The narrow micropore volume of 0.3~0.4 cc/g, total pore volume of 0.3~0.8 cc/g, mean pore width of 0.5~0.7 nm was obtained in the range of 20~50% burnoff.

서로 다른 약품처리를 이용하여 제조한 활성탄의 세공구조 및 중금속과 영양염류 흡착특성 (Pore Structure and Adsorption Characteristics of Metals and Nutrient Salt of Activated Carbon Produced from Different Chemical Treatment)

  • 유기성폐슬러지를 염화아연과 황화칼륨으로 약품활성화하여 제조한 활성탄의 세공발달과 흡착특성을 연구하였다. 유기성폐슬러지로 제조한 탄소의 세공발달은 77K에서 질소흡착법을 이용하여 특성화하였다. 염화아연으로 약품활성화하여 제조한 $ZnCl_2$-활성탄은 활성화공정에 의해 미세공이 형성되었음을 지적해주는 BDDT 분류의 type I의 흡착특성을 보여주었다. 상용 분말활성탄과 $K_2S$-활성탄은 BDDT 분류의 type IV와 유사한 이력현상을 나타냈는데, 이것은 이들 활성탄에 중세공이 형성되었음을 말해준다. 이것은 $K_2S$-활성탄은 주로 중세공과 미세공으로 이루어졌으며, 거대세공의 발달은 미비하다는 것을 의미한다. 유기성폐슬러지로 제조한 $K_2S$-활성탄의 중금속 흡착능은 상용입상활성탄보다 우수한 것으로 나타났다. $K_2S$-활성탄에 대한 중금속의 흡착은 단분자층 흡착을 나타내는 Langmuir와 Freundlich 등온식에 잘 부합되었다. $PO_4$-P에 대한 흡착능은 $K_2S$-활성탄이 $ZnCl_2$-활성탄보다 우수한 것으로 나타난 반면, $NO_3$-N의 흡착은 $ZnCl_2$-활성탄이 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과, 활성화제로 염화아연과 황화칼륨을 사용하여 유기성폐슬러지를 약품처리할 경우, 탄화와 활성화공정을 거치는 2단계 공정을 통하여 상용입상활성탄보다 흡착능이 뛰어난 활성탄을 제조할 수 있었다.

Identification of Expressed Sequence Tags of Genes Expressed Highly in the Activated Hepatic Stellate Cell

  • Expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were generated from two 3'-directed CDNA libraries constructed from quiescent and activated rat hepatic stellate cell (HSC) to analyze the expression profiles of active genes in both cells. From quiescent and activated HSC, 694 ESTs and 779 ESTs, respectively, were obtained after excluding those having shorter than 30 bp. Amonq ESTs obtained from quiescent and activated HSC, 68 and 73 kinds of ESTs (186 clones and 236 clones), respectively, appeared more than once, implying that their genes are expressed highly in each cell type. 52 among 73 ESTs appeared only in the activated HSC 47 amonq 68 ESTs only in the normal HSC, and 21 in both cells. The genes of these 52 ESTs were assumed to be expressed more highly in the activated HSC. To confirm the high expression of genes of which the ESTs appeared more than twice in the activated HSC, northern hybridization was carried out with RNAs derived from rat normal and fibrotic liver using each of 18 EST DNAs as probe. 13 ESTs showed more intense bands with RNA isolated from the fibrotic liver than normal liver. From these results, we confirm the positive correlation between abundance of transcript in activated HSCs and the expression level in fibrotic liver, The expression profile of the transcripts serves as an important tool in understanding the biological properties of HSC.

소나무 수피로부터 수증기 활성화에 의한 활성탄 제조 (Preparation of Activated Carbon from Pine Bark by Steam Activation)

  • 소나무 수피로 부터 수증기 활성화 의하여 활성탄을 제조하였으며, 제조된 활성탄은 세공 구조 및 표면적에 대한 검토를 행하였다. 활성화를 위하여 3종류의 서로 다른 형태의 로(정치식 수직, 수평로 및 회전식 수평로)가 본 실험에 사용되었다. 정치식 수직 및 수평로를 이용하여 수피를 탄화시키고 이를 수증기 활성화시키면, 1,000 ㎡/g이상의 높은 비표면적을 얻기는 어려웠다. 분말상태의 시료를 사용하면 비표면적이 약간 향상되었지만, 여전히 정치식 로의 경우 높은 비표면적의 결과를 얻기는 어려웠다. 로타리식 수평로에서 수피를 수증기 활성화시키면, 시판 1급 활성탄과 유사한 1,000 ㎡/g 이상의 비표면적을 나타내는 활성탄을 제조할 수 있었다. 로타리식 수평로에서 제조된 활성탄은 미세공에서 중세공까지 다양한 공극 분포를 나타내었다.

KOH activated pine tree needle leaves biochar as effective sorbent for VOCs in water

  • The removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water using KOH-activated pine tree needle leaves biochar is considered a cost effective and efficient process. In this study, pine tree needle leaves were mixed with 0, 50, 100 and 200% (KOH weight/feedstock weight) of KOH, respectively. Then, the mixture was pyrolyzed at $500^{\circ}C$ for 6 hrs. The adsorption characteristics of 10 VOCs to the biochar were tested. The results indicated that the removal efficiency of the KOH activated biochar was highest in 100% KOH-biochar. The VOC removal efficiencies of 50% and 200% KOH activated biochar were similar and the 0% KOH activated biochar showed the lowest VOC removal. The FTIR results showed that increasing the amount of KOH seemed to enhance the formation of various functional groups, such as -OH, -C=C, -O. The adsorption strength of 10 VOCs to the KOH activated biochar seemed to be increasing by the increase of the solubility of VOCs. This may suggest that the adsorption is taking place in hydrophilic sites of the biochar surface. The KOH activated pine tree needle leaves biochar can be an effective sorbent for VOCs removal in water and 100% KOH mixing seemed to provide better sorption capacity.

산과 염기의 개질에 의해 변화된 활성탄의 표면특성과 흡착특성 비교 (Comparison of Surface Characteristics and Adsorption Characteristics of Activated Carbons Changed by Acid and Base Modification)

  • The surface properties of activated carbon modified by acids and base were studied. The influence of the surface chemistry on the adsorption of benzene and acetone vapor on modified activated carbons has been investigated The modified activated carbons were obtained by treatment with acetic acid ($CH_3COOH$), nitric acid ($HNO_3$) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The modified activated carbons had similar porosity but different surface chemistry and adsorption characteristics. The total surface acidity (sum of functional groups) of activated carbon (AC-AN) treated by nitric acid was 2.6 times larger than that of activated carbon (AC) before the acid treatment. Especially, carboxyl group was much developed by nitric acid treatment. The benzene equilibrium adsorption capacity of AC-AN decreased 20% more than that of AC. However, the acetone equilibrium adsorption capacity of AC-AN increased 20% more than that of AC because of the large increase of carboxyl group and acidity.

Influence of Pyrolysis Conditions and Type of Resin on the Porosity of Activated Carbon Obtained From Phenolic Resins

  • In polymer precursor based activated carbon, the structure of starting material is likely to have profound effect on the surface properties of end product. To investigate this aspect phenolic resins of different types were prepared using phenol, mcresol and formaldehyde as reactants and $Et_3N$ and $NH_4OH$ as catalyst. Out of these resins two resol resins PFR1 and CFR1 (prepared in excess of formaldehyde using $Et_3N$ as catalyst in the basic pH range) were used as raw materials for the preparation of activated carbons by both chemical and physical activation methods. In chemical activation process both the resins gave activated carbons with high surface areas i.e. 2384 and 2895 $m^2/g$, but pore size distribution in PFR1 resin calculated from Horvath-Kawazoe method, contributes mainly in micropore range i.e. 84.1~88.7 volume percent of pores was covered by micropores. Whereas CFR1 resin when activated with KOH for 2h time, a considerable amount (32.8%) of mesopores was introduced in activated carbon prepared. Physical activation with $CO_2$ leads to the formation of activated carbon with a wide range of surface area (503~1119 $m^2/g$) with both of these resins. The maximum pore volume percentage was obtained in 3-20 ${\AA}$ region by physical activation method.

배추를 이용한 활성탄 제조에 관한 연구 (Study on the Production of Activated Carbon using Chinese Cabbage)

  • In recent years, the demand of activated carbon has been increasing steadily because of the environmental problems. Among them waste and water treatment and removal of poisonous gas were invorved. Therefore, in this study, activated carbon was made from the waste chinese cabbage and measured the iodine adsorption ability, carbonization yield, and activation yield of the produced activated carbon. The result showed that the carbonization yield was decreased when carbonization temperature was increaed and that the optimal carbonization temperature was $600{\circ}C$. The optimal concentration of NaOH for removing ash in the raw sample was 1~2N. The range of iodine adsorption number of activated carbon using chinese cabbage at $600{\circ}C$. carbonization was 610.82mg/g to 1019.58mg/g. The activation result of carbonization sample showed that the optimal activation condition was the carbonization at $400\circ}C$ and the activation at$700{\circ}C$. So the production of activated carbon using chinese cabbage was possible in the aspect of reuse of resource and decrease of environmental pollution compared to the commercial activated carbon.

($Na_{2}CO_{3}$$KIO_{3}$ 첨착 왕겨활성탄의 $H_{2}S$ 흡착특성 (($H_{2}S$ Adsorption Capacity of $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ and $KIO_{3}$ Impregnated Activated Carbon)

  • Activated carbons with high surface area of 2,600 $m^{2}/g$ and high pore volume of 1.2 cc/g could be prepared by KOH activation of rice hulls at a KOH:char ratio of 4:1 and $850^{\circ}C$. In order to increase the adsorption capacity of hydrogen sulfide, which is one of the major malodorous component in the waste water treatment process, various contents of $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ and $KIO_{3}$ were impregnated to the rice-hull activated carbon. The impregnated activated carbon with 5 wt.% of $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ showed improved $H_{2}S$ adsorption capacity of 75 mg/g which is twice of that for the activated carbon without impregnation and the impregnated activated carbon with 2.4 wt.% of $KIO_{3}$ showed even higher $H_{2}S$ adsorption capacity of 97 mg/g. The improvement of $H_{2}S$ adsorption capacity by the introduction of those chemicals could be due to the $H_{2}S$ oxidation and chemical reaction with impregnated materials in addition to the physical adsorption of activated carbon.

Application of activated carbon bugs to the dye tracer study in a Karst area

  • Studies were performed on evaluating the applicability of activated carbon bugs on dye tracer tests as tracer detectors by using its adsorption isotherm of the grained activated carbon. We preliminary conducted several standard adsorption and extraction tests and obtained the relationship between standard dye solution and detected concentrations from activated carbon samples in dry and wet conditions. the slopes of the regression line were 0.71 for wet condition and 0.74 for dried one. Field dye tracer tests were performed in a karst area, where several faults occur along a stream and pass the test area. We sampled water samples and activated carbon samples at three points in Hwangji Pond, where groundwater outflows from the karst conduit. According to the results of breakthrough curve analysis, the regional flow along the conduit, which is assumed to cause a karst conduit, was estimated as 0.18 m/day. The relationship between the concentrations of water sample and extracted activated carbon bugs shows the similar slopes with those from standard solution tests. This suggests that activated carbon could be useful as a dye tracer detector because the extraced concentration can be quantified.
