The magnitude of the roll motion of a floating structure depends on the roll damping acting on the body. In other words, the roll damping of a floating structure must be accurately obtained in order to precisely evaluate the roll motion. Various methods are used to evaluate the roll damping of a floating structure, such as the linear potential theory, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and model tests. However, it is difficult to evaluate the roll motion of a floating structure with appendages such as a bilge keel and riser slot due to the limitation of ignoring the viscous effects in the linear potential theory. Among these methods, a model test based on a free decay test and harmonic excited roll motion (HERM) is known to be the most reliable method to estimate the roll damping of the floating structures. In this study, model tests using free decay and HERM techniques were performed in the Ocean Engineering Basin (OEB) of KRISO with various types of midship sections. The roll damping results were estimated based on post-processing methods using both techniques, and the roll damping results were compared.
In order to study unsteady aerodynamic loads on high speed trains passing by each other 350km/h, three-dimensional flow fields around trains during the crossing event are numerically simulated using three-dimensional Euler equations. Roe's FDS with MUSCL interpolation is employed to simulate wave phenomena. An efficient moving grid system based on domain decomposition techniques is developed to analyze the unsteady flow field induced by the restricted motion of a train on a rail. Numerical simulations of the trains passing by on the double-track are carried out to study the effect of the train nose-shape, length and the existence of a tunnel on the crossing event. Unsteady aerodynamic loads-a side force and a drag force-acting on the train during the crossing are numerically predicted and analyzed. The side force mainly depends on the nose-shape, and the drag force depends on tunnel existence. Also. a push-pull (i.e.impluse force) force successively acts on each car and acts in different directions between the neighborhood cars. The maximum change of the impulsive force reaches about 3 tons. These aerodynamic force data are absolutely necessary to evaluate the stability of high speed multi-car trains. The results also indicate the effectiveness of the present numerical method for simulating the unsteady flow fields induced by bodies in relative motion.

In the design of structure, the forces acting on tai structure are key parameter fur noise and vibration control. However, in the complex structure, the forces at the injection point on the structure cannot be measured directly. So, it is necessary to find out Indirect force evaluation method. In this paper, forces have been measured with In-situ vibration responses and system information. And, three existing techniques of indirect force measurement, vita. direct inverse. principal component analysis and regularization have been compared. This paper shows that multi-vibration responses are essential for talc precise estimation of the forces. To check these conditions, rotary compressor is adopted as test sample, because it is very difficult to measure the injection forces from internal excitation to shell. It alas also been obtained that relatively higher force is transmitted through three welding paths to the compressor shell. It shows a good agreement between direct and indirect force evaluation with curvature shell and plate.
Modern super-tall buildings are more sensitive to strong winds. The evaluation of wind loads for the design of these buildings is of primary importance. A direct monitoring of wind forces acting on super-tall structures is quite difficult to be realized. Indirect measurements interpreted by inverse techniques are therefore favourable since dynamic response measurements are easier to be carried out. To this end, a Kalman filtering based inverse approach is developed in this study so as to estimate the wind loads on super-tall buildings based on limited structural responses. The optimum solution of Kalman filter gain by solving the Riccati equation is used to update the identification accuracy of external loads. The feasibility of the developed estimation method is investigated through the wind tunnel test of a typical super-tall building by using a Synchronous Multi-Pressure Scanning System. The effects of crucial factors such as the type of wind-induced response, the covariance matrix of noise, errors of structural modal parameters and levels of noise involved in the measurements on the wind load estimations are examined through detailed parametric study. The effects of the number of vibration modes on the identification quality are studied and discussed in detail. The made observations indicate that the proposed inverse approach is an effective tool for predicting the wind loads on super-tall buildings.
This study analyzed stresses in concrete and its reinforcement, computing the additional loading transferred by concrete creep. The loading varied from zero, structure exclusively under its self-weight, up to the critical buckling load. The studied structure was a real, tapered, reinforced concrete pole. As concrete is a composite material, homogenizing techniques were used in the calculations. Due to the static indetermination for determining the normal forces acting on concrete and reinforcement, equations that considered the balance of forces and compatibility of displacement on cross-sections were employed. In the mathematical solution used to define the critical buckling load, all the elements of the structural dynamics present in the system were considered, including the column self-weight. The structural imperfections were linearized using the geometric stiffness, the proprieties of the concrete were considered according to the guidelines of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 209R), and the ground was modeled as a set of distributed springs along the foundation length. Critical buckling loads were computed at different time intervals after the structure was loaded. Finite element method results were also obtained for comparison. For an interval of 5000 days, the modulus of elasticity and critical buckling load reduced by 36% and 27%, respectively, compared to an interval of zero days. During this time interval, stress on the reinforcement steel reached within 5% of the steel yield strength. The computed strains in that interval stayed below the normative limit.
A hybrid control scheme is proposed for the stabilization of backward movement along simple paths for a vehicle composed of a truck and six trailers. The hybrid comprises the combination of a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and a neurocontroller (NC) that is trained by a genetic algorithm (GA). Acting singly, either the NC or the LQR are unable to perform satisfactorily over the entire range of the operation required, but the proposed hybrid is shown to be capable of providing good overall system performance. The evaluation function of the NC in the hybrid design has been modified from the conventional type to incorporate both the squared errors and the running steps errors. The reverse movement of the trailer-truck system can be modeled as an unstable nonlinear system, with the control problem focusing on the steering angle. Achieving good backward movement is difficult because of the restraints of physical angular limitations. Due to these constraints the system is impossible to globally stabilize with standard smooth control techniques, since some initial states necessarily lead to jack-knife locks. This paper demonstrates that a hybrid of neural networks and LQR can be used effectively for the control of nonlinear dynamical systems. Results from simulated trials are reported.
A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with phytic acid (PA) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were investigated by voltammetric methods in buffer solution. The PA-SWNTs/GCE-modified electrode demonstrated substantial enhancements in electrochemical sensitivity and selectivity towards dopamine (DA) in the presence of L-ascorbic acid (AA). The PA-SWNTs films promoted the electron transfer reaction of DA, while the PA film, acting as a negatively charged linker, combined with the positively charged DA to induced DA accumulation in the film at pH under 7.4. However, the PA film restrained the electrochemical response of the negatively charged AA due to the electrostatic repulsion. The anodic peak potentials of DA and AA could be separated by electrochemical techniques, and the interferences from AA were effectively eliminated in the DA determination. Linear calibration plots were obtained in the DA concentration range of 0.1-10 μM and the detection limit of the DA oxidation current was determined to be 0.06 μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The results indicated that the modified electrode is used to determine DA without interference from AA.

Ultrathin atomic layer deposition (ALD) coatings were found to enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Previous studies have demonstrated that $LiCoO_2$ cathode powders coated with metal oxides with thicknesses of $\sim100-1000{\AA}$ grown using wet chemical techniques improved LIB performance. In this study, $LiCoO_2$ powders were coated with conformal $Al_2O_3$ ALD films with thicknesses of only $\sim3-4{\AA}$ established using 2 ALD cycles. The coated $LiCoO_2$ powders exhibited a capacity retention of 89% after 120 charge-discharge cycles in the 3.3~4.5 V (vs. $Li/Li^+$) range. In contrast, the bare $LiCoO_2$ powders displayed only a 45% capacity retention. This dramatic improvement may result from the ultrathin $Al_2O_3$ ALD film acting to minimize Co dissolution or to reduce surface electrolyte reactions.
When designing protective clothing, there are something to be considered such as physiological feature of human body, acting range not to restrict physical activity, and effectiveness of material. Because the primary objective of protective clothing is to protect human body from danger and it is designed through complex designing process not likely general clothing design. However, current evaluation techniques-such as the ISO, the ASTM and the CEN, and KS-provide only the standard to evaluate the primary feature of material (testing, performance requirements, material specification, selection and application, test and care, and so on). There are no standard to evaluate influence for the human body while protective clothing put on. Especially, in Korea, there is KS to evaluate protective clothing, but it is partially translated version from ISO because of lack of core technology about this field. However, developed countries recognize it is new competitive means in the time of Global Standards and they are competing to make their own standard to global standard for the protective clothing. Therefore, it can be great opportunity for Korean clothing and textile industry to revitalize if focusing on research and development for protective clothing design based on physical activity of human body, fit evaluation technique and sizing which is currently no global standard for it and developing our standard to global standard.
