A variety of actuators fur an implantable artificial heart have been studied. They, all, however, share the disadvantages of a complicated energy conversion mechanism and of the need to use bearings. A ferrofluidic actuator directly drives magnetic fluids by applying a magnetic field to these fluids; it does not require bearings. In this study, the feasibility of a ferrofluidic actuator for an implantable artificial heart was studied. An way of two Poles of ring solenoids was mounted near the acrylic tube $({\phi}\;7.4mm)$. A rubber sack (volume : $2m{\ell}$ was connected to both ends of the acrylic tube. The sack were encased in a rigid chamber that had inlet and outlet ports. The acrylic tube and the rubber sack were filled with water encased in a rigid chamber magnetic fluid and the iron cylinder were immersed in the water. Two experiment method was conducted. 1) distance between stoppers were 72mm and 2) distance between stoppers were 104mm. A stroke volume was stability and $0.96m{\ell}$ was obtained in the experiment 1 and $1.92m{\ell}$ in the experiment 2. The energy efficiency of Experiment method 2 is about five times than Experiment method 2. A magnetic fluid-driven blood pump could be feasible if the magnetic fluid with high magnetization (3 times yester than the current value) is developed.
Change in the cortical thickness of long bones occurring with aging and osteoporosis is known to be a risk factor for fracture. The present study aims to investigate the dependencies of phase velocities of ultrasonic guided waves on the cortical thickness in 7 soft tissue-bone mimicking phantoms consisting of acrylic plates covered by a 2 mm-thick silicone rubber layer by using the axial transmission technique with a pair of transducers with a center frequency of 200 kHz and a diameter of 12.7 mm. Two distinct propagating waves with different velocities, the First Arriving Signal (FAS) and the Slow Guided Waved (SGW), were consistently observed for all the soft tissue-bone mimicking phantoms. The FAS velocity decreased slightly with increasing thickness, whereas the SGW velocity increased strongly with increasing thickness. The FAS and the SGW velocities were found to be closely consistent with the S0 and the A0 Lamb mode velocities for a free acrylic plate, respectively, suggesting that the presence of the soft tissue mimicking material (2 mm-thick silicone rubber layer) covering the acrylic plates does not influence significantly the velocity measurements.
For a purpose of recycling of waste tires, composites of 10-60wt% recycled tire crumb blended with high density polyethylene(HDPE) were prepared, and their mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break, tensile modulus and impact strength were investigated as a function of tire crumb content. Ethylene-acrylic acid(EAA) copolymer was introduced by 10phr as a compatibilizer and the mechanical properties of the composites were measured. For the blend composition of 40wt% tire crumb content showing improved impact strength, the mechanical properties were measured by varying the EAA content of 5-15phr. All blends, whether modified or unmodified, showed a gradual improvement in impact strength as the tire crumb content increased, but the other properties decreased compared with the pure HDPE. In particular, the addition of EAA copolymer to the tire crumb content over 30wt% showed substantial improvement in impact strength. There was no significant effect of tire crumb size on impact strength of the composites.
Solution polymerization was conducted with water-soluble acrylic acid (AA) as a monomer and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator at a selected temperature between $60^{\circ}C$ and $90^{\circ}C$ with water as a reaction medium. When the ratio between AA and water was reduced or initiator concentration increased, molecular weights decreased. An increase in the reaction temperature produced lower molecular weights. The polydispersity index was close to 1.5 in most of the reactions. An increase in the stirring speed up to 400 rpm led to a progressive increase in molecular weights. When the stirring speed reached 800 rpm, however, we found that both the number and weight average molecular weights decreased. The glass transition temperature was nearly independent of moelcular weights and determined to be between $113^{\circ}C$ and $116^{\circ}C$.
With modification of the acid etch technique and improvements of the physical and mechanical properties of the acrylic resin, the removal of directly bonded attachments and the finishing of the underlying enamel have become an acute clinical problem. This study was to evaluation the efficacy of recently introduced instrumentation and techniques to remove bonded brackets and residual resin, and restore the affected enamel surface to an acceptable clinical condition. Fortyeight premolar which were scheduled for extraction for orthodontic purposes were bonded with brackets using super-C ortho. Four additional premolars with untreated surfaces were used as controls. After one weak the brackets were removed and the residual resin removed by hand scaler, green stone, green rubber wheel, sandpaper disc, tungsten carbide bur, Sof-lex disc. Half the experimental teeth were given a final pumicing and then all were extracted and stored in 50 percent ethanol. The scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluated the enamel surface. Following results were obtained; 1. A satisfactory result was obtained by means of the Sof-lex disc. 2. The order of the scratch formation was the procedure using hand scaler, green atone, tungsten carbide bur, sandpaper disc, green rubber wheel, and Sof-lex disc. 3. The procedures using green stone and tungsten carbide bur showed many groove formations and the other procedures showed none. 4. final pumicing serves effectively to remove residual adhesive and restore the enamel surface.

Hydrocarbon resins, which are defined as low molecular weight, amorphous, and thermoplastic polymers, are widely used as tackifier for various types of adhesives, as processing aids in rubber compounds, and as modifiers for plastics polymers such as isotactic polypropylene. Typically, hydrocarbon resins are non-polar, and thus highly compatible with non-polar rubbers and polymer. However, they are poorly compatible with polar system, such as acrylic copolymer, polyurethanes, and polyamides. Moreover, recently the raw materials of hydrocarbon resin from naphtha cracking had been decreased because of light feed cracking such as gas cracking. To overcome this problem, in this study, novel hydrocarbon resins were designed to have a highly polar chemical structure which material is sustainable. And, it was successfully synthesized by Diels-Alder reaction of dicyclopentadiene monomer and sorbic acid from blueberry as renewable resources. Acrylic resins were formulated with various tackifiers solution including sorbic acid grafted hydrogenated dicyclopentadiene hydrocarbon resins in acrylic adhesive and rolling ball tack, loop tack, $180^{\circ}$ peel adhesion strength, and shear adhesion strength were measured. The properties depend on the softening point and polar content of tackifiers.
Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) can absorb and retain ten to thousand times their dry mass of water because of their three-dimensional hydrophilic structures. Conventional SAPs are mainly composed of poly(acrylic acid sodium salt) derived from petrochemicals. The present work is aimed at limiting the use of the petrochemical component by replacing it with a biomass-based material. First, the core-SAP was prepared via the terpolymerization of itaconic acid, vinylsulfonic acid, and cellulose, and the optimum conditions in terms of material input ratio were determined. Following this, the core-SAP was surface-crosslinked by esterification with butane diol to improve its liquid permeability and absorbency under load (AUL). The liquid permeability was measured according to the amount of 0.9 wt.% NaCl solution passing between the swollen SAP particles under a given pressure, and the AUL was estimated from the weight of this solution absorbed under 0.3 psi pressure.
In this research, the relationships between the chemical structures of 10 different acrylate monomers with 3 different cross-linking monomers were evaluated. The thermal stabilities of the prepared copolymers were evaluated by their weight-loss percentage through thermogravimetric analysis, and their glass-transition temperatures were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry. Based on the results, some relationships between the chemical structures of the monomers and their properties were derived and are discussed herein.
Using various compositions of thermally conductive inorganic fillers with boron nitride (BN) and aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$), solventless UV-curable thermally conductive acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were prepared. The base of the PSAs consists of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, and isobornyl acrylate. The compositions of the thermally conductive inorganic fillers were 10, 15, 20, and 25 phr in case of BN, and 20:0, 15:5, 10:10, 5:15, and 0:20 phr in case of $BN/Al_2O_3$. The adhesion properties like peel strength, shear strength, and probe tack, and the thermal conductivity of the prepared PSAs were investigated with different thermally conductive inorganic filler contents. There were no significant changes in photo-polymerization behavior with increasing BN or $BN/Al_2O_3$ content. Meanwhile, the conversion rate and transmittance of the PSAs decreased and their thermal stabilities increased with increasing BN content. Their adhesion properties were also independent of the BN or $BN/Al_2O_3$ content. The dispersibility of BN in the acrylic PSAs was better than that of $Al_2O_3$ and it ranked the thermal conductivity in the following order: BN > $BN/Al_2O_3$ > $Al_2O_3$.
The pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) were synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers such as butyl acrylate, 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, and acrylic acid in the presence of starch as a protective colloid and copolymer. The peel strength and holding power of PSA were increased with starch contents due to the enhancement of gel content, But the initial tackiness of PSA was decreased with starch contents. The contact angle analysis of PSA indicated that the wettability was increased with starch contents owing to the increase of polarity by hydroxy group in starch. In the pH measurement of emulsion with time for biodegradability, the starch in the PSA accelerated the lowering of pH due to the formation of organic acids followed by decomposition of starch.
