  • Conventional Fourier analysis can give only limited information about the dynamic characteristics of nonstationary signals. Instead, time-frequency analysis is widely used to investigate the nonstationary signal in detail. Several time-frequency analysis methods are compared for a typical acoustic emission burst generated during the impact between a ferrite ceramic and aluminum plate. This AE burst is inherently nonstationary and random containing many frequency contents, which leads to severe interference between cross terms in bilinear convolution type distributions. The smoothing and reassignment processes can improve the readability and resolution of the results. Spectrogram and scalogram of the AE burst are obtained and compared to get the characteristics information. Renyi entropies are computed for various bilinear time-frequency transforms to evaluate the randomness. These bilinear transforms are reassigned by using the improved algorithm in discrete computation.

  • An experimental system on three point bending notched beams was established to study the fracture process of concrete. In this system, the acoustic emission (AE) was used to build the cumulative generation order (AGO) and dynamically track the process of microcrack evolution in concrete. A grey-cusp catastrophe model was built based on AE parameters. The results show that the concrete beams have significant catastrophe characteristic. The developed grey-cusp catastrophe model, based on AGO, can well describe the catastrophe characteristic of concrete fracture process. This study also provides a theoretical and technical support for the application of AE in concrete fracture prediction.

  • This paper presents a realization of fault detection algorithm and Fieldbus based communication for condition monitoring of check valve. We first acquired the AE(Acoustic Emission) sensor data at the KAERI check valve test loop, extract fault features through the learned Neural network, and send the processed data to a remote site. The overall system has been implemented and experimental results are given to show its effectiveness.

  • This study shows how the change of helix angle of different helix angle end mill affects machining accurracy. It was verified that cutting force are remarkably low when endmill has helix angle of different helix angle 250, 310, 370 and AE signal have less reationshap with the change of helix angle. Moreover, as the number of rotations are increases, the AE signal increased with the proportion to the number but cutting force are inversely proportional to the rotation.

  • Automatic monitoring of cutting process is one of the most important technology for increasing the stability and the reliability of unmanned manufacturing system. In this study, basic methods which use the acoustic emission (AE) signals and sutting forces proposed to monitor tool wear (flank wear) quantitatively. Fist, in order to detect flank wear, it was investigated influence of cutting conditions, that is, cutting velocity, feed and depth of cut, on AE signals (AErems) and cutting forces. Furthermore, the relationship flank wear between AErems and cutting forces were discussed.

  • Chip formation control is an important problem in the automation of manufacturing process, since the continuous chip can cause catastrophic failures of the tooling and entangle the workpiece causing damage. However, it is impossible to predict chip form correctly due to the complex nature of cutting process. In order to detect the chip form for unmanned manufacturing, a new identification method is proposed. The feasibility of using acoustic emission signals from the sensing plate for identification of chip form is investigated. Experiments were conducted under the various cutting conditions. When the acoustic emission sensor is attached to the sensing plate, it turns out that the moving averaged AE signals correlated well with the collision of segmented chips with the plate. The sensitivity of moving averaged AE signals to chip congestions due to continuous chip formation is illustrated as well.

  • Bending strength, bending elastic modulus ,and fracture toughness of different types of dental composite resins were deter mined. The relationship between bending strength, fracture toughness and filler volume fraction of dental composite resin was understood. In Acoustic Emission(AE) behavior during fracture toughness test, characteristic generation patterns of each type were understood. The fracture toughness values, AE generation patterns, and the nature of fracture surface were analyzed to understand fracture behavior of dental composite resin.

  • In recent years, carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) has been widely used for reinforcement of damaged concrete structures. However, the fundamental mechanisms of load transfer and load-resistance for reinforced concrete beams retrofitted by CFRP are not fully understood. Acoustic emission(AE) technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of damage progress and the failure mechanism of reinforced concrete beams retrofitted by CFRP. In this study, three-paint-bending test has been carried out to investigate the AE characteristics of four specimens. The results show that the AE technique is a valuable tool to study the failure mechanism of reinforced concrete beams retrofitted by CFRP.

  • The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic modulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of HPFRCC(High performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composite). Acoustic emission(AE) method was used to evaluate the characteristics of fracture process and the micro-failure mechanism of HPFRCC. For these purposes, three kinds of fibers were used : PP(Polypropylene), PE(Polyethylene), SC(Steel cord). In this study, the AE characteristics of HPFRCC with different fiber type(PE.15, PP2.0, SC0.75+PE0.75) distributions under four-point-bending were studied. The result show that the AE technique is a valuable tool to study the failure mechanism of HPFRCC.
