Acetone으로 추출한 Rhodospirillum rubrum의 황색색소 (Yellow Pigment from Rhodospirillum rubrum by Acetone Extraction)

  • A study of general characteristics of acetone extracted pigment from the cell mass of Rhodospirillum rusrum DSM 467 was carried out for the development of natural food colorant. Through visible absorption scanning, it showed seven absorption peaks at 355, 410, 529, 624, 680 and 747nm, and it was shown to be yellow color. In acidic and neutral conditions, the color was yellow, while in the alkaline condition it was greenish yellow. This pigment was stable at pH range between 3.0~10.0, and below 4$0^{\circ}C$. In the presence of light and oxygen, the stability of pigment rapidly degraded and it became unstable in the presence of metal ions such as Cu2+, Al3+ and Fe3+. Through TLC analysis, it was shown to be composed of seven color fractions.

고급알코올을 이용한 토너의 응집 및 스크리닝을 통한 제거 효과 (Agglomeration of Toner Particles with Fatty Alcohol and Their Removal by Screening)

  • Toner used in xerographic printing process is hydrophobic powder with low surface energy. The toner ink film fused on paper surface can be efficiently detached from a fiber surface during pulping, but it does not fragment again into fine toner particles. Ink agglomerates that result have too large particle size to be deinked by flotation. The purpose of this study is to enhance toner agglomeration using 1-octadecanol for improving the toner removal by screening. The effect of pH, pulping temperature, and 1-octadecanol on toner agglomeration and removal by screening was investigated using image analysis methods. Results showed that the size of toner agglomerates increased substantially when pulping was carried out at high temperature under acidic condition. When toner agglomerates showed spherical shape, the particle removal efficiency of screening was improved.

Spectral and Photophysical Behaviors of Curcumin and Curcuminoids

  • In order to obtain detailed information on ground and excited states of curcumin and curcuminoids, as well as to understand the photobiological characteristics of them, their spectral and photophysical behaviors are investigated in various conditions. Various curcuminoids were obtained and their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods. In n-hexane, the absorption and fluorescence spectra of these compounds contain some structure, which disappear in more polar solvent such as methanol. The fluorescence intensities of curcumin and dimethylated curcumin decrease as the concentration of water increases. The intensities also decrease as the solvent varies from neutral to extremely acidic (lower than pH 1.5) or to basic (higher than pH 8.0) condition. These results indicate that the spectral and photophysical properties of both of curcumin and curcuminoids are strongly influenced by solvent, water, and pH.

Destruction of 2-Chloriphenol from Wastewater and Investigation of By-products by Ozonation

  • This study investigates the ozonation kinetics of 2-chlorophenol in wastewater under acidic condition. Intermediates and by-products generated during the process were rigorously identified and quantified. The major by-products are four carboxylic acids: tartaric acid, oxalic acid, maleic acid, and hydroxymalonic acid. The generation of these organic acids is in agreement with theoretical predictions. But hydroxylated compounds are more favorable to produce than their corresponding non-hydroxylated ones. Based on the information concerning the generation of organic acids and other aromatic intermediates, the complete reaction pathways toward mineralization can be proposed and mathematically modeled. The fitted second-order rate constants are in the same order of magnitude with the results from other studies. Using these oxidation pathways and the corresponding kinetic model, by-products generated in ozonation process can be predicted. This can help in optimizing the design and operation of any subsequent treatment processes.

Absorption and Lumiescence Spectra of Eu(Ⅲ) Complexes with Oxydiacetate and Dipicolinate in Aqueous Solution

  • Absorption and luminescence spectra of Eu3+ (aquo) and the two different 1: 3 Eu3+: ligand systems in aqueous solutions are measured under mild acidic pH condition. The oxydiacetate (ODA) and dipicolinate (DPA) ligands, forming the similar geometric complexes, are used in this work. The three intensity parameters, Ωλ (λ=2, 4, and 6) are empirically determined by applying the Judd-Ofelt theorem to the oscillator strengths of the six absorption bands arising from the ground 7F0 state. Among the three intensity parameters, the Ω2 is found to response markedly to a miner change in the ligand environment via the 7F0→5D0 transition. In addition, the relative oscillator strengths of the four luminescence bands in the visible region, assigned to the 5D0→7FJ (J=1, 2, 3 and 4) transitions are obtained to investigate their sensitivity to the ligand environment. Among the four bands, the 610 nm band, attributed to the 5D0→7F2 transition, shows hypersensitivity in the luminescence.

pH-Dependent Electrochemical Behavior of N-Monosubstituted-4,$4^{\prime}$-Bipyridinium Ions

  • The pH-dependent reduction behavior of N-monosubstituted-4,4'-bipyridinium ions ($RBPY^+: R=methyl(C_1)$; benzyl; n-octyl; n-dodecyl) has been investigated by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques. At acidic condition, $RBPY^+$ is protonated and the protonated species are reduced by two consecutive one-electron processes. The $2e^-$ reduced species undergoes a chemical reaction with $H^+$. The second-order rate constant $(k_H)$ of the homogeneous chemical process is $(3.7{\pm}0.3){\times}10^3M^{-1}s^{-1}$ for the two electron reduction product of $C_1BPY^+$. At high pH, the electrode reduction of $RBPY^+$ is one-step $2e^-$ transfer process with concomitant addition of $H^+$, which is confirmed by cyclic voltammetric study using a microdisk electrode.

Embargo Nature of CuO-PANI Composite Against Corrosion of Mild Steel in Low pH Medium

  • Incorporation of CuO nanoparticles during the polymerization of aniline in the presence of ammonium peroxydisulphate as an oxidizing agent and sodium salt of dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid as dopant as well as surfactant yielded water soluble CuO-PANI composite. Comparison of recorded spectra like FTIR, XRD and SEM with reported one confirm the formation of the composite. Analysis by gravimetric method exposes that the synthesized composite is having resistivity against corrosion, with slight variation in efficiency on extending the time duration up to eight hours in strong acidic condition. OCP measurement, potentiodynamic polarization and EIS studies also confirms the suppression ability of composite against corrosion. Riskless working environment could be provided by the synthesized composite during industrial cleaning process.

Development of cobalt encased in nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon nanotube for non-precious metal catalyst toward oxygen reduction reaction

  • In this paper, cobalt embedded in nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon nanotubes (CoNSTs) were synthesized for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. The CoNSTs were prepared through a facile heat treatment method without any templates. Different amounts of the metal salt were employed to examine the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the CoNSTs. The CoNSTs showed the bamboo-like tube morphology with the encased Co nanoparticles in the tubes. Through the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, the catalysts exhibited different chemical states of the nitrogen and sulfur species. As a result, the CoNST performed high activity toward the ORR in an acidic condition with the onset potential of 0.863 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). It was clearly demonstrated from the electrochemical characterizations that the quality of the nitrogen and sulfur species significantly influences the ORR activity rather than the total amount of the dopants.

Biochemical Characterization of a Psychrophilic Phytase from an Artificially Cultivable Morel Morchella importuna

  • Psychrophilic phytases suitable for aquaculture are rare. In this study, a phytase of the histidine acid phosphatase (HAP) family was identified in Morchella importuna, a psychrophilic mushroom. The phytase showed 38% identity with Aspergillus niger PhyB, which was the closest hit. The M. importuna phytase was overexpressed in Pichia pastoris, purified, and characterized. The phytase had an optimum temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, which is the lowest among all the known phytases to our best knowledge. The optimum pH (6.5) is higher than most of the known HAP phytases, which is fit for the weak acidic condition in fish gut. At the optimum pH and temperature, MiPhyA showed the maximum activity level ($2,384.6{\pm}90.4{\mu}mol{\cdot}min^{-1}{\cdot}mg^{-1}$, suggesting that the enzyme possesses a higher activity level over many known phytases at low temperatures. The phytate-degrading efficacy was tested on three common feed materials (soybean meal/rapeseed meal/corn meal) and was compared with the well-known phytases of Escherichia coli and A. niger. When using the same amount of activity units, MiPhyA could yield at least $3{\times}$ more inorganic phosphate than the two reference phytases. When using the same weight of protein, MiPhyA could yield at least $5{\times}$ more inorganic phosphate than the other two. Since it could degrade phytate in feed materials efficiently under low temperature and weak acidic conditions, which are common for aquacultural application, MiPhyA might be a promising candidate as a feed additive enzyme.

Effect of Gamma Ray Irradiation on the Availability of Applied $^{65}Zn$ to Applied at Organic Matter Added Soils under Laboratory Conditions

  • 3종의 유기물을 첨가한 산성, 알카리성 답 토양에 방사성 아연비료($^{65}ZnSO_4$)를시용(施用)하고 $^{60}Co$ gamma선을 조사(照射)하였을때 시용한 $^{65}Zn$의 고정(固定)과 방출(放出)에 어떤 영향을 주는가를 보기 위하여 실험실내에서 항온방치 실험을 행한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 산성, 알카리성 답 토양에 시용한 $^{65}ZnSO_4$는 이들 토양에 고정되므로 DTPA용액에의 가용성 $^{65}Zn$ 는 방치시간이 경과 할수록 감소되다가 항온방치 4주 부터 고액상(固液相)간에 평형을 유지하게된다. 이 평형상태하에서 $^{65}ZnSO_4$의 대부분은 고상(固相)에 흡착 고정되는데 그 정도는 산성인 금곡토양에서는 $^{65}Zn$의 89% (방사능 기준) 이었고, 알카리성인 석회암질 제천토양에서는 93.7% 이었다. 산성. 알카리성 답 토양에 gamma선을 조사(照射)하면 $^{65}Zn$의 고정은 감소되므로 가용성 $^{65}Zn$ 는 증가한다. 고정된 $^{65}Zn$의 DTPA 용액에의 가용정도는 산성인 금곡토양에서는 38.9% 이었고 알카리성 석회암질 제천토양에서는 9.5%에 불과 하였다. 고정된 $^{65}Zn$의 gamma선 조사(照射)에 의한 방출은 답 토양의 pH에 밀접한 관계가 있었다. 즉 고정된 $^{65}Zn$의 방출은 pH가 얕은 산성토양에서 현저했고 알카리성 토양에서는 적었다. 금곡토양에 gamma선을 조사하면 $^{65}Zn$의 유효도가 커지는 것으로 봐서 산성조건에서는 고정된 아연은 더 가용화 된다고 본다. 유기물 급원(給源)별 방사선 영향 차이는 인정되지 않았다. 그러나 gamma선을 조사하지 않았을 때 Glucose 처리는 Cellulose나 생고분말(生藁粉末)을 첨가했을 때 보다 DTPA 가용성 $^{65}Zn$은 더 방출(放出)되었다.
