  • Purpose: Advanced techniques now make it possible to remove considerable amounts of subcutaneous adipose tissue more safely with minimum blood loss. However, few have analyzed the metabolic consequences of liposuction. The purpose of this study was to identify the early effects of the surgical removal of subcutaneous fat on metabolic changes in patients who have undergone liposuction. Methods: Nineteen patients were evaluated from June 2005 to December 2005. Preoperative body weight, serums levels of lipids, apolipoprotein A1, dehydroepiandrosterone(DHEA), uric acid, insulin, and glucose were evaluated. Insulin resistance was determined using the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), which is based on fasting glucose and insulin concentrations. All of these data were remeasured in 1 and 4 weeks postoperatively. Tumescent fluid was infiltrated using the superwet technique. The liposuction device used was a $Liposlim^{(R)}$ power-assisted unit. Results: Average volumes of infiltrate and aspirate were 3,268mL and 2,892mL, respectively. Results in 1 week postoperatively demonstrated a significant difference in high-density lipoprotein(HDL) cholesterol, apolipoprotein A1, insulin, and HOMA-IR levels. However, all values were within normal limits and returned to baseline in 4 weeks postoperatively. Conclusion: This study provides little to support the presumed therapeutic effect of liposuction. And, it is unclear whether liposuction can prevent or be used to treat the metabolic complications of obesity. However, the results of the present study lead us to believe that liposuction is a metabolically safe procedure.

  • The result of studying the epidemiological characteristics of Salmonella strains which have been isolated from the domestic animals in Gyeongbuk province from February 1998 to August 2000 were summarized as follows. The isolation rates of Salmonella strains were 2.0% from cattle feces, 6.3% from cattle lymph node, 9.5% from pig feces, and 25.1% from pig lymph node. In poultry, the isolation rates were 30.3%. The isolates of Salmonella showed positive reaction for MUCAP test, methyl red test, but showed negative reaction for urea test, indole test, Voges Proskauer test. On TSI agar, the isolates showed acid butt, alkaline slant. Also, the isolates were identified as Salmonella strain by API 20E kit. Non H$_2$S Production Salmonella strains isolated from poultry were identified as S gallinarum. As a result of serotyping, B group were the most common in cattle and pig, Dl in chickens. 21 serovars were found. the common serovar from the domestic animals was S typhimurium, S derby, S agona, S schwarzenground, S enteritidis and S gallinarum. The most commonly encountered serovars in cattle were S agona and S typhirimurium in pig, S gallinarum in chicken. As a result of antimicrobial susceptibility test, all Salmonella isolates were susceptible to amikacin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin; cefotaxime and polumcin B. The resistance rates to tetracycline and streptomycin was 58% and 56%, respectively. 69.3% of all isolates were resistant to more than one antimicrobial agent. Out of the resistant isolates, the isolates resistant to streptomycin and tetracycline was 36%. There were 24 strains of multiresistant isolates resistant to more than 5 antimicrobial agents. S typhimurium were resistant to all antimicrobial agents, also had a lot of multiresistant strains. Therefore, S typhimurium was considered as a major agent of antimicrobial resistance.

  • Chronic consumption of a high-fat, high-sucrose (HFHS) diet increases insulin resistance and results in type 2 diabetes mellitus in C57BL/6J mice. Hyperglycemia in diabetics increases oxidative stress, which is associated with a high risk of diabetic complications. The purpose of this study was to examine the hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects of chamnamul [Pimpinella brachycarpa (Kom.) Nakai] in an animal model of type 2 diabetes. The ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity of a 70% ethanol extract of chamnamul was measured in vitro. Five-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were fed a basal or HFHS diet with or without a 70% ethanol extract of chamnamul at a 0.5% level of the diet for 12 weeks after 1 week of adaptation. After sacrifice, serum glucose, insulin, adiponectin, and lipid profiles, and lipid peroxidation of the liver were determined. Homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was determined. Chamnamul extract inhibited ${\alpha}$-glucosidase by 26.7%, which was 78.3% the strength of inhibition by acarbose at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL. Serum glucose, insulin, and cholesterol levels, as well as HOMA-IR values, were significantly lower in the chamnamul group than in the HFHS group. Chamnamul extract significantly decreased the level of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in the liver compared with the HFHS group. These findings suggest that chamnamul may be useful in prevention of hyperglycemia and reduction of oxidative stress in mice fed a HFHS diet.

  • For purpose of anti-static film remaining unchanged in the condition of $160^{\circ}C$, organic solvent, acid and base solution $0.01\sim0.03{\mu}m$ particles of Sb doped tin oxide(ATO) were grafted by 3-Glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPTS) for improving interfere bonding force between ATO and epoxy resin. The particles were dispersed in 2-methoxyethanol with YD-I28(Bisphenol A type epoxy resin, Kukdo chemical) and 1-imidazole as hardener. The anti-static solutions were coated on PI film as thickness of $0.1{\mu}m$. Surface resistivity of anti-static film containing conductive polymer became $10^{12}\Omega/\Box$ after 32 hours in $160^{\circ}C$. The surface resistivity of ATO grafted by GPTS / Epoxy coating layer remained as $10^{7.6}\Omega/\Box$ in $160^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. ATO grafted by GPTS / Epoxy coating layer coated on PI film was dipped in acetone for 7 days. The surface resistivity remained unchanged as $10^{7.6}\Omega/\Box$. The anti-static layer dipped in water solutions containing each KOH 10 wt % and $H_2SO_4$ 2 wt% was ultra-sonicated for 10 minutes per once until 30th. The surface resistance of anti-static layer containing ATO grafted by GPTS remained unchanged.

  • In this work, the effects of atmospheric oxygen plasma treatment of carbon fibers on mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers-reinforced epoxy matrix composites was studied. The surface properties of the carbon fibers were determined by acid/base values, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. Also, the crack resistance properties of the composites were investigated in critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$), and critical strain energy release rate mode II ($G_{IIC}$) measurements. As experimental results, FT-IR of the carbon fibers showed that the carboxyl/ester groups (C=O) at 1632 $cm^{-1}$ and hydroxyl group (O-H) at 3450 $cm^{-1}$ were observed for the plasma treated carbon fibers, and the treated carbon fibers had the higher O-H peak intensity than that of the untreated ones. The XPS results also indicated that the $O_{1S}/C_{1S}$ ratio of the carbon fiber surfaces treated by the oxygen plasma led to development of oxygen-containing functional groups. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites, including $K_{IC}$ (critical stress intensity factor) and $G_{IIC}$ (critical strain energy release rate mode II), were also improved for the oxygen plasma-treated carbon fibersreinforced composites. These results could be explained that the oxygen plasma treatment played an important role to increase interfacial adhesions between carbon fibers and epoxy matrix resins in our composite system.

  • Submerged membrane bio-reactor (SMBR) has several advantages such as high MLSS, long SRT, and low F/M ratio at wastewater treatment. So, this has widely applied over the world and many studies have been conducted. However, membrane fouling remains an inevitable problem. This study was investigated using bench-scale SMBR with three poeration modes. Raw waters were prepared by addition of starch, acetic and fibric acid to recovery water of zeolite. The efficiency of nitrification and COD were very stable as about 95% and 80%, respectively. And critical flux was 128.8L/$m^{2}$/hr. The result of biodegradability test was following values at the each mode : Ss+Xs/$C_{T}$=81.7%, 35.1% and 45.3%, $X_{I}+S_{I}/C_{T}=18.3%$, 64.9% and 54.7%. When particulate matters such as $X_{I}$ and $X_{S}$ in influent are increased, membrane fouling will take place more and more. A relative ratio of filtration resistance to the fouling occurred by the cake layer was increased when increased the portion of $X_{I}$ and polysaccharide. It was thought that the formation of cake layer was promoted due to bond between $X_{I}$ and vicid material s generated from the polysaccharide.

  • Salmonella Enteritidis is responsible for causing foodborne diseases upon consumption of egg products. While cases of S. Enteritidis isolation from eggs have been reported in other countries, no such cases have previously been reported in Korea. In this study, we report the first isolation and identification of S. Enteritidis from domestically distributed eggs in Korea. Eggs were collected from eight countrywide grocery stores during different seasons between 2011 and 2012. Egg contents and washing solution of egg shells were incubated in buffered peptone water, and the enriched broth was further enriched in tetrathionate broth and Rappaport-Vassiliadis. The secondary enriched broth was streaked on xylose lysine desoxycholate agar. The suspected colonies were confirmed to S. Enteritidis by a biochemical test, serotyping, and PCR test. Genetic relatedness among the isolates was analyzed using Diversilab Salmonella kit. Three strains of S. Enteritidis were isolated from egg contents and egg shells collected from grocery stores of the Eumseong-city in the fall of 2011. All three stains showed resistance to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, nalidixic acid, and ampicillin by the disk diffusion method. In addition, the isolates showed more than 99% DNA homology, indicating that they were presumably identical strains. Therefore, there is a requirement to monitor and control against S. Enteritidis from eggs in Korea.

  • After intraspecific fusion of Lactobacillus casei protoplasts, the recombinants have been studied for their lactose utilization, protease activity and phage resistance. L. casei C-M phenotypes constituted 46% of the fused cells when tested against phages, and L. casei 3-M phenotypes 42% of the fused cells, and 12% of the recombinants developed the resistance to both parent types of phages. The acid production and proteolytic activity of recombinants evidenced the similar trends. There was no difference in Hind III digests of plasmid DNA between parent cells and recombinants, but the reconlbinant cells were found to possess only one type of plasmid, either of 1. casei C-M or of L. casei 3-M.

  • Manufacturing conditions of the porous alumina mold were established to overcome various limits of the gypsum mold. For the preparations of the porous alumina mold, an activated charcoal was added to the Al2O3 with the wt% variation and then mixed. The binary slurry was study dispersed based on the examination of the ESA and rheological behaviro. The cylinder type alumina mold was cast in the gyspum mold and characterized by the shrinkage rate at the variable sintering temperature and the resistance against wear. It was proper to make a sintering of the Al2O3 by the surface diffusion which was non-shrinkage sintering mechansim, and intergranular neck growed stronger while sintering was being made. We studied a sintering by three categories; 1) thermodynamic method below 1,000$^{\circ}C$, 2) kinetic method above 1,000$^{\circ}C$ and 3) combined method. In the results of the respective works, combined method was superiro to the others. The prepared Al2O3 mold had relatively high strength, low drying rate, the resistance against the acid or base and good casting behavior.

  • The organic-inorganic composite membrane in polymer exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have several fascinating technological advantages such as a proton conductivity, thermal stability and mechanical properties. As the inorganic filler, silicon carbide (SiC) fiber have been used in various fields due to its unique properties such as thermal stability, conductivity, and tensile strength. In this study, composite membrane was successfully fabricated by modified-silicon carbide fiber. Modified process, as a novel process in SiC, takes reaction by phosphoric acid after oxidation process (generated homogeniusly $SiO_2$ layer on SiC fiber). The mechanical property which was conducted by tensile test of the 5wt% modified-$SiO_2@SiCf$ composite membrane was better than that of Aquivion casting membrane as well as ion cxchange capacity(IEC) and proton conductivity. In addition, the single cell performance was observed that the 5wt% modified-$SiO_2@SiCf$ composite membrane was approximately $0.2A/cm^2$ higher than that of a Aquivion casting electrolyte membrane and electrochemical impedance was improved with the charge transfer resistance and membrane resistance.
