The effects of the water extract of 'Banhahubagtang', the combined herbal medicine, on the low esophageal sphincter, stomach, small intestine and CNS were investigated, and the results were as follows: The hexobarbital induced sleeping time was prolonged in female mice. The convulsion induced by electric shock was suppressed and analgesic action was recognized in mice. The extract inhibited intestinal propulsion of barium sulfate in mice. The extract inhibited free acid secretion and showed remarkable suppression of gastric ulcer in rats. Relaxation induced by isoproterenol and norepinephrine in low esophageal sphincter(L.E.S.) of rabbit was potentiated by addition of the extract. In conclusion, the Banhahubagtang exhibited anticonvulsive, sedative and L.E.S. inhibitory activities. These experimental results might indicate to be coincided with the indications for neuro-esophago-stenosis, esophagitis, esophagia, gastralgia, and neurosis which are well referred to the literature of oriental medicine.
This study was carried out to treat the thermal elutriated acids of piggery wastewater using UASB process. The UASB reactor was operated at an organic loading rate (OLR) of $7.4\;kgCOD/m^3-day$ (6.5 ~ 9.0). During the start-up period, the low COD removal efficiency (20%) was caused by shock loading and instability in the reactor. It was mainly due to the high concentration amounts of ammonia nitrogen, which caused inhibitory and toxic effects to toward the anaerobic bacteria. In steady state, the UASB reactor showed a SCOD removal efficiency of 71% and a VS removal efficiency of 39%. The gas production and methane content were 1.3 L/day $(0.21\;m^3\;CH^4/kg$ COD removed) and 77%, respectively.
Fourteen flavonoids were evaluated for their effects as potential bradykinin (BK) antagonists. The compounds were evaluatd in several in vitro and in vivo (oral administration) systems ; inhibition of BK induced contractions in isolated rat ileum and uterus, antagonistic effects of BK induced plasma extravasation, reduction of acetic acid induced withing nociception and protection from endotoxic shock. Skullcapflavone II (3), baicalein (5), 5-methoxyflavone (11), 6-methoxyflavone (12) and 2'-methoxyflavone (14) showed effects in all the tests although the order of potency were somewhat varied.
In conclusion, a series of N-Cbz-.alpha.-amono-glutarimides (1a-f), combining common structures such as N-CO-C-N and cyclic imide in a single molecule, were prepared from the (R)- or (S)-N-Cbz-glutamic acid and evaluated for their anticonvulsant activities in MES and PTZ tests in order to develope new and broad spectrum anticonvulsant. In this study, N-Cbz-.alpha.-aminoglutarimides (1) except ac and af, showed significant anticonvulsant activity in both MES and PTZ tests enough to be recommended as promising new anticonvulsant drug candidates. Now we are continuing to investigate further anticonvulsant test (quantification)for these compounds and synthesize their analogues in order to develop more active anticonvulsant and define the structure activity relationship more precisely.

The effects of pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), a GABA receptor antagonist, were studied on passive avoidance learning and expression of heat shock protein 70 (hsp70), neuroglobin, and fatty acid binding protein-7 (fabp-7) genes. Zebrafish were trained to stay in a dark compartment to avoid a weight dropping in an acryl shuttle box with a central sliding door. In two training sessions of 2 h interval, each consisting of 3 trials, the crossing time was significantly increased from $43.2{\pm}14.4s$ to $149.3{\pm}38.5s$ in the first training session and remained $116.1{\pm}36.0s$ s in the first trial of the second training session in the control. In zebrafish treated with PTZ before the first training session, the crossing time was significantly increased neither in the first nor in the second training session. However, the increased crossing time was maintained in the second training session when 10 mM PTZ was treated three times for 10 min at 30 min intervals between the first and second training session. Quantitative real-time PCR showed that expression level of hsp70 mRNA increased two to eight fold over that of control in the brain at 0-24 h after termination of PTZ treatment. No change in expression of neuroglobin and fabp-7 mRNA was shown in PTZ-treated zebrafish. Our studies suggest that PTZ impairs learning ability in avoidance response and also modifies expression of genes related to the neuroprotection.

Heat shock protein (HSP) 70, the highly conserved stress protein families, plays important roles in protecting cells against heat and other stresses in most animal species. In the present study, we identified and characterized four Hsp70 (RuHSP4, RuHSC70, RuHSP12A, RuGRP78) family proteins based on the expressed sequence tag (EST) analysis of the Korean rose bitterling R. uyekii cDNA library. The deduced RuHSP70 family has high amino acid identities of 72-99% with those of other species. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that RuHsp70 family clustered with fish groups (HSP4, HSC70, HSP12A, GRP78) proteins. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed the specific expression patterns of RuHsp70 family members in the early developmental stages and several tissues in Korean rose bitterling. The expression of 4 groups of Hsp70 family was detected in all tested tissue. Particularly, Hsp70 family of Korean rose bitterling is highly expressed in hepatopancreas and sexual gonad (testis and ovary). The expression of Hsp70 family was differentially regulated in accordance with early development stage of Rhodeus uyekii.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the performances of organic removal and methane recovery by using a full scale two-phase anaerobic system. The full scale two-phase anaerobic process was consists of an acidogenic anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and a methanognic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The volumes of acidogenic and methanogenic reactors were designed to $28.3m^3$ and $75.3m^3$. The two-phase anaerobic system represented 60-82% of COD removal efficiency when the influent COD concentration was in the range of 7,150 to 16,270 mg/L after screening (average concentration is 10,280 mg/L). After steady-state, the effluent COD concentration in the methanogenic reactor showed $2,740{\pm}330 mg/L$ by representing average COD removal efficiency was $71.4{\pm}8.1%$ when the operating temperature was in the range of $19-32^{\circ}C$. The effluent SCOD concentration was in the range of 2,000-3,000 mg/L at the steady state while the volatile fatty acid concentration was not detected in the effluent. Meanwhile, the COD removal efficiency in the acidogenic reactor showed less than 5%. The acidogenic reactor played key roles to reduce a shock-loading when periodic shock loading was applied and to acidify influent organics. Due to the high concentration of alkalinity and high pH in the effluent of the methanogenic reactor, over 80% of methane in the biogas was produced consistently. More than 70% of methane was recovered from theoretical methane production of TCOD removed in this research. The produced gas can be directly used as a heat source to increase the reactor temperature.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the effects of ethanol in ingested patients by analyzing data from a single institution's registry, Methods: We conducted a prospective study of 50 patients who has ingested drugs with/without ethanol came to emergency department from January 2004 to May 2004. Only patients over 18 years of age were included. Clinical characteristics, general and specific treatment, laboratory finding, complication, and clinical outcomes were obtained from protocol. Patients were divided into two groups: drug ingested with alcohol (ethanol group, n=18), and ingested without alcohol (non-ethanol group, n=32). Results: The age, the amout of ingestion, the time to treatment, the systolic blood pressure, the diastolic blood pressure and the shock duration were not different between two groups. The AST level with the ethanol group was higher than with the non-ethanol group ($230.94\pm518.88$ U/L vs $43.22\pm63.39$ U/L, p=0.002). The ALT level with the ethanol group was higher than with the non-ethanol group ($97.06\pm152.98$ U/L vs $32.75\pm43.10$ U/L, p=0.001). The lactic acid level with the ethanol group was higher than with the non-ethanol group ($7.40\pm6.33$ mmol/L vs $3.77\pm3.10$ mmol/L, p=0.001). The hospital stay duration and the admission rate were not different between two groups. Conlusions: The ethanol increased the levels of serum AST, ALT and lactic acid in intoxicated patients. But the ethanol dose not increase admission rate and duration of admission stay in intoxicated patients.
Membrane system has been increasingly considered as a safe and cost-effective water treatment process especially in case of small scale water works. This research is a basis of membrane application in water works through a long period test with obtaining operation skills and evaluation of water quality and cost competitiveness. For the research, the UF membrane system was installed in small water treatment plant that uses river-bed water as raw water. The system was consisted of 2 stage membrane and operated in constant flow mode (Flux: 1.5, 1.0, 0.9, 0.6). In each different flux condition, TMP trends were showed better results at lower flux condition. And through the high flux condition test, it is certified that membrane system could deal with breakdown of one stage. Water quality of permeate was satisfied the water quality standards especially turbidity. To know what mainly causes fouling on membrane, the test by membrane with several cleaning agents and EDX analysis have done in lab. Through the tests, ferrous concentration in raw water, backwashing water and membrane surface etc. was high and it causes fouling inside and outside of membrane. So acid cleaning using organic acid such as oxalic acid is necessary in Chemical in Place (CIP). At the economical aspect the electrical cost of membrane system is higher than that of slow sand filtration but labor cost can be reduced by automation. However, the use of labor should be determined considering effectiveness and stability of operation. Because during the operation, there are several breakdown such as electrical shock by lightning, water drop in summer, etc.

Corosolic acid (CA), a triterpenoid compound isolated from Lagerstroemia speciosa L. (Banaba) leaves, exerts anti-inflammatory effects by regulating phosphorylation of interleukin receptor- associated kinase (IRAK)-2 via the NF-κB cascade. However, the protective effect of CA against endotoxic shock has not been reported. LPS (200 ng/mL, 30 min) induced phosphorylation of IRAK-1 and treatment with CA (10 μM) significantly attenuated this effect. In addition, CA also reduced protein levels of NLRP3 and ASC which are the main components of the inflammasome in BMDMs. LPS-induced inflammasome assembly through activation of IRAK-1 was down-regulated by CA challenge. Treatment with Bay11-7082, an inhibitor of IκB-α, had no effect on CA-mediated inhibition of IRAK-1 activation, indicating that CA-mediated attenuation of IRAK-1 phosphorylation was independent of NF-κB signaling. These results demonstrate that CA ameliorates acute inflammation in mouse BMDMs and CA may be useful as a pharmacological agent to prevent acute inflammation.
