Heavy-weight Floor Impact Sound Characteristics of Standard Laboratory by Slab Thickness (슬래브 두께에 따른 표준실험동의 중량충격음 특성)

  • In this study, examined heavy-weight floor impact sound to structure that have slab thickness of 4 form at a standard laboratory through noise and vibration measured. The results show that the nature Natural frequency increased according to change of thickness of each slab by finite element analysis, and acceleration value decreased. Results of measurements of noise and vibration at a standard laboratory, the slab 210, 240mm structures was construed result such as finite element analysis but the slab 150, 180mm structures is construed that influence in vibration acceleration level because edge condition has condition that contact to ground. Therefore, in modelling process for analysis, is thought that need that condition analyzes examining element influencing about structure that contact to ground.

  • Portable communication devices such as laptop computers suffer impact-induced failure in their usage. Drop/impact performance of these products is one of important concerns of product design. Because of the small size of this kind of electronics products, it is very expensive, time-consuming and difficult to conduct drop tests to directly detect the failure mechanism and identify their drop behaviors. Finite element analysis provides a vital, powerful vehicle to solve the problems. The models are created with HYPERMESH, and the analysis is carried out with LS-DYNA3D. The analysis is focused on HDD impact behavior in acceleration peak values.

Data analysis of simulated fuel-loaded sea transportation tests under normal conditions of transport

  • In this study, to evaluate the shock and vibration load characteristics of used fuel, a sea transportation test was conducted using simulated fuel assemblies under normal transport conditions. An overall test data analysis was performed based on the measured strain and acceleration data obtained from cruise, rotation, acceleration, braking, depth of water, and rolling tests. In addition, shock response spectrum and power spectral densities were obtained for each test case. Amplification and attenuation characteristics were investigated based on the load path. The load was amplified as it passed from the overpack to the simulated used fuel-assembly. As a result of the RMS trend analysis, the fuel-loading position of the transportation package affected the measured strain in the fuel rod, and the maximum strains were obtained at the spans with large spacing. However, even these maximum strains were very small compared to the fatigue strength and the cladding yield strength. Moreover, the fuel rods located on the side exhibited a larger strain value than those at the center.

  • This paper aimed at collecting sensor signals to extract characteristic parameter of the rotor. A vibration test rig has been developed to perform model tests. Signal characteristics were analyzed when driving normally. Envelope FFT Analysis is used to extract vibration components caused by periodic impacts from other vibration factors. Signal analysis was performed when load changes were given to speed sensors and vibration test rigs that show low frequency characteristics of the rotor and signal analysis according to rotational speed. The acceleration signal measured in the bearing housing has a small amplitude and produces only the rotational frequency component and harmonic component of the motor. As the number of rotations increases, the amplitude of acceleration can be seen. As the rotational speed increases, it can be seen that there is a difference in the shape of the original data and compared with the acceleration FFT graph, it can be seen that the noise is strong at low frequencies and the corresponding rotational frequency components are clearly represented. It can be seen that changing the load does not increase the main rotational frequency component.

Seismic fragility analysis of a new type of reinforced concrete energy dissipation structure

  • In order to improve the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structure, high performance fiber reinforced concrete (HPFRC) energy dissipation walls were installed in RC frame to form a new aseismic structure. Two half-scale HPFRC energy dissipation wall-RC frame specimens were designed and constructed. Quasi-static tests were performed to study the failure mechanism, deformation performance, and energy dissipation performance. The test results indicate that HPFRC energy dissipation wall-RC frame structures can achieve the seismic fortification objective of being "repairable after major earthquake". Based on the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) method, seismic fragility analysis of the HPFRC energy dissipation wall-RC frame structure was performed by using PERFORM-3D structural analysis software and 44 ground motion records. The results show that the HPFRC material has good tensile strain hardening performance, which can improve the damage resistance and energy dissipation capacity of the structure or components. When the structure collapses, the average spectral acceleration response corresponding to the fundamental period of the structure calculated by 44 ground motion records is greater than the spectral acceleration corresponding to the fundamental period of the structure duringa rare earthquake with a fortification intensity of 8 degree, so the HPFRC energy dissipation wall-RC frame structure has good anti-collapse ability. Under the action of a rare earthquake of magnitude 8, the exceeding probability of collapse of the HPFRC energy dissipation wall-RC frame structureis 0.03%, which meets the requirements forseismic protection of the structure under the action of a large earthquake.

Selecting and scaling ground motion time histories according to Eurocode 8 and ASCE 7-05

  • Linear and nonlinear time history analyses have been becoming more common in seismic analysis and design of structures with advances in computer technology and earthquake engineering. One of the most important issues for such analyses is the selection of appropriate acceleration time histories and matching these histories to a code design acceleration spectrum. In literature, there are three sources of acceleration time histories: artificial records, synthetic records obtained from seismological models and accelerograms recorded in real earthquakes. Because of the increase of the number of strong ground motion database, using and scaling real earthquake records for seismic analysis has been becoming one of the most popular research issues in earthquake engineering. In general, two methods are used for scaling actual earthquake records: scaling in time domain and frequency domain. The objective of this study is twofold: the first is to discuss and summarize basic methodologies and criteria for selecting and scaling ground motion time histories. The second is to analyze scaling results of time domain method according to ASCE 7-05 and Eurocode 8 (1998-1:2004) criteria. Differences between time domain method and frequency domain method are mentioned briefly. The time domain scaling procedure is utilized to scale the available real records obtained from near fault motions and far fault motions to match the proposed elastic design acceleration spectrum given in the Eurocode 8. Why the time domain method is preferred in this study is stated. The best fitted ground motion time histories are selected and these histories are analyzed according to Eurocode 8 (1998-1:2004) and ASCE 7-05 criteria. Also, characteristics of both near fault ground motions and far fault ground motions are presented by the help of figures. Hence, we can compare the effects of near fault ground motions on structures with far fault ground motions' effects.

  • Because of the continual occurrence of minor and moderate earthquakes in Korean peninsula, it is generally considered that Korean is not located in a safe region against probable earthquake any more, even though being recognized as a safe country in earthquake. It is in particular noted that nowadays there has been much concern about unexpected tragedy due to probable earthquake since the disaster of 1995 kobe earthquake. Thus, the objective of this research is to develop appropriate design spectrum which could be practicably used in seismic design of important structures taking into consideration of local physical characteristics. Particularly, we have to keep in mind the lessons from 1985 Mexico earthquake which had disregarded deep research on local ground conditions, being a possible magnification phenomena of ground motions in weak soil layer. Various spectra has been described based on the analysis of historical earthquakes, and generate the artificial ground acceleration. Also, rational numbers of artificial ground acceleration is investigated by the seismic analysis for skew slab bridges.

Prediction of Cavitation Intensity in Pumps Based on Propagation Analysis of Bubble Collapse Pressure Using Multi-Point Vibration Acceleration Method

  • We developed a 'multi-point vibration acceleration method' for accurately predicting the cavitation intensity in pumps. Pressure wave generated by cavitation bubble collapse propagates and causes pump vibration. We measured vibration accelerations at several points on a casing, suction and discharge pipes of centrifugal and mixed-flow pumps. The measured vibration accelerations scattered because the pressure wave damped differently between the bubble collapse location and each sensor. In a conventional method, experimental constants are proposed without evaluating pressure propagation paths, then, the scattered vibration accelerations cause the inaccurate cavitation intensity. In our method, we formulated damping rate, transmittance of the pressure wave, and energy conversion from the pressure wave to the vibration along assumed pressure propagation paths. In the formulation, we theoretically defined a 'pressure propagation coefficient,' which is a correlation coefficient between the vibration acceleration and the bubble collapse pressure. With the pressure propagation coefficient, we can predict the cavitation intensity without experimental constants as proposed in a conventional method. The prediction accuracy of cavitation intensity is improved based on a statistical analysis of the multi-point vibration accelerations. The predicted cavitation intensity was verified with the plastic deformation rate of an aluminum sheet in the cavitation erosion area of the impeller blade. The cavitation intensities were proportional to the measured plastic deformation rates for three kinds of pumps. This suggests that our method is effective for estimating the cavitation intensity in pumps. We can make a cavitation intensity map by conducting this method and varying the flow rate and the net positive suction head (NPSH). The map is useful for avoiding the operating conditions having high risk of cavitation erosion.

Dynamic Analysis of AP1000 Shield Building Considering Fluid and Structure Interaction Effects

  • The shield building of AP1000 was designed to protect the steel containment vessel of the nuclear reactor. Therefore, the safety and integrity must be ensured during the plant life in any conditions such as an earthquake. The aim of this paper is to study the effect of water in the water tank on the response of the AP1000 shield building when subjected to three-dimensional seismic ground acceleration. The smoothed particle hydrodynamics method (SPH) and finite element method (FEM) coupling method is used to numerically simulate the fluid and structure interaction (FSI) between water in the water tank and the AP1000 shield building. Then the grid convergence of FEM and SPH for the AP1000 shield building is analyzed. Next the modal analysis of the AP1000 shield building with various water levels (WLs) in the water tank is taken. Meanwhile, the pressure due to sloshing and oscillation of the water in the gravity drain water tank is studied. The influences of the height of water in the water tank on the time history of acceleration of the AP1000 shield building are discussed, as well as the distributions of amplification, acceleration, displacement, and stresses of the AP1000 shield building. Research on the relationship between the WLs in the water tank and the response spectrums of the structure are also taken. The results show that the high WL in the water tank can limit the vibration of the AP1000 shield building and can more efficiently dissipate the kinetic energy of the AP1000 shield building by fluid-structure interaction.

The Analysis of Acceleration Performance Resulted by Weight Variation for HEMU-430X high-speed train the Korea's next-generation electric multiple unit train (차세대 동력분산형 고속열차(HEMU-430X)의 중량변화에 따른 가속능력 분석)

  • This study reports the relationship between rollingstock weight and acceleration performance for HEMU-430X, the first electric multiple unit developed in Korea. While maintaining the consumed power, the total train weight was deliberately varied by 2%, by adding and removing weights, and the it was shown that the lighter train was found to have higher acceleration performance and hence better suited for maximum speed tests below the speed of 413km/h. According to the power consumption analysis based on the velocity data collected per 0.1 second, the balanced speed, when the traction force and air resistance become equal, was determined to be 419km/h for HEMU-430X, which is in agreement with tested result. It is expected that the analyses in this study will be utilized for the speed tests in the future.
