  • Underground structures that have recently become larger are required to be stable not only during normal times but also during earthquakes. Especially, it is very important to maintain the stability of the subsea tunnels during the earthquake. The objective of this paper is to verify the effectiveness of the flexible segment, which is one of the breakthrough facilities to maintain the stability of the subsea tunnel during the earthquake using the shaking table test. Another goal of this paper is to propose the optimum position of the flexible segment through 3D dynamic numerical analysis based on the verified results from shaking table tests. The 1g shaking table test considering the similarity ratio (1:100) to the cross section of the selected artificial subsea tunnel was carried out considering the Geongju and Artificial seismic waves, longitudinal and lateral wave, and with/without flexible segments eight times or more. As a result of the shaking table test, it was confirmed that the flexible segment is effective in improving the seismic performance of the undersea tunnel in all the experimental results. In addition, 3D dynamic numerical analysis was performed to select the optimum position of the flexible segment which is effective for improving seismic performance. As a result, it was confirmed that the seismic acceleration is attenuated when the flexible segment is installed adjacent to the branch section in subsea tunnel.

  • It is more salient in the high-tech industry to cooperate even among competitors in order to promptly respond to the changes in product architecture. In this sense, 'co-opetition,' which is the combination word between 'cooperation' and 'competition,' is the new business term in the strategic management and represents the two concepts "simultaneously co-exist." From this view, this study set up the research purposes as follows: 1) investigating the corporate managerial and technological behavioral characteristics in the co-opetition of the global display industry. 2) verifying the emerging factors during the co-opetition behavior hereafter. 3) suggesting the strategic direction focusing on the co-opetition behavioral characteristics. To this end, this study used co-word network analysis to understand the structure in context level of the co-opetition. In order to understand topics on each network, we clustered the keywords by community detection algorithm based on modularity and labeled the cluster name. The results show that there were increasing patterns of competition rather than cooperation. Especially, the litigations for mutual control against Korean firms much more severely occurred and increased as time passed by. Investigating these network structure in technological evolution perspective, there were already active cooperation and competition among firms in the early 2000s surrounding the issues of OLED-related technology developments. From the middle of the 2000s, firm behaviors have focused on the acceleration of the existing technologies and the development of futuristic display. In other words, there has been competition to take leadership of the innovation in the level of final products such as the TV and smartphone by applying the display panel products. This study will provide not only better understanding on the context of the display industry, but also the analytical framework for the direction of the predictable innovation through analyzing the managerial and technological factors. Also, the methods can support CTOs and practitioners in the technology planning who should consider those factors in the process of decision making related to the strategic technology management and product development.

  • Hydrodynamic similarity was investigated in pressurized three-phase slurry bubble columns by selecting the bubble holdup and pressure drop as objective functions, for the effective design and scale-up of it. In addition, effects of operating variables on the bubble holdup with variation of column diameter were also analyzed. Gas velocity($U_G$), viscosity(${\mu}_{SL,eff}$) and surface tension(${\rho}_{SL}$) of slurry phase, density difference between the slurry and gas phases(${\rho}_{SL}-{\rho}_G$) depending on the operating pressure, pressure drop per unit length(${\Delta}P/L$), column diameter(D) and gravitational acceleration(g) were chosen as governing parameters in determining the bubble holdup and pressure drop in the column. From the dimensional analysis, four kinds of dimensionless groups were derived from the 7 parameters and 4 fundamental dimensions. Effects of dimensionless groups such as Reynolds, Froude and Weber numbers on the bubble holdup in the column were discussed. The pressure drop and bubble holdup could be predicted from the correlation of dimensionless groups effectively, which could be used as useful information for the design and scale-up of pressurized slurry bubble columns.

  • In bridge performance assessments, a new load carrying capacity evaluation model of simple bridges was proposed, which is based on the developed simple support impact factor spectrum. In this paper, a conservative assumption that the inner span with the both ends fixed boundary condition is ideal for applying the impact factor response spectrum for continuous bridges. The impact factor response spectrum has been proposed based on this assumption. The response spectrum by comparing the numerical analysis result and actual measurement data verified the applicability. The analysis was loading the moving load of DB-24 in a six-span continuous bridge, which was the same as the actual measurement data, the dynamic response was measured in the fourth span. The frequency of the bridge was obtained by FFT on the acceleration response and the span-frequency of sample bridge was calculated by the frequency. The impact factor of the sample bridge was determined by applying the span-frequency of the bridge to the proposed response spectrum; it was similar to the result of comparing the actual measured impact factor. Therefore, the method using the impact factor response spectrum based on the frequency response of both ends-fixed beam was found to be applicable to an actual continuous bridge.

  • Over 12 years have passed since the first commercial operation of a Korean high-speed train. Since then, the transport capacity of the high-speed lines has become almost saturated. Therefore, studies have been carried out to increase the operating speed of the trains in order to increase their transportation capacity. This study was carried out to improve the critical speed of the KTX-Sancheon, Korean high-speed train, in order to increase its operating speed. A dynamic analysis of the KTX-Sancheon train was performed using the contact data obtained from the wheel wear profiles that were measured from a KTX-Sancheon train in commercial operation. The analysis results were verified by comparing them with the measurement acceleration data obtained from KTX-Sancheon. The suspension parameters were optimized to improve the operation speed. The critical speed of KTX-Sancheon was increased by 9.4% after the optimization by the response surface method. The optimized suspension parameters are expected to be used for the new bogie design to increase the operating speed of KTX-Sancheon from 300km/h to 350km/h.

  • The next generation high-speed train(HEMU-430X) is Korea's first electric multiple unit type, high speed vehicle resulting from a national R&D project. Tests have been conducted on the Kyungbu High Speed Line running at speeds up to 354.64km/h, and analysis of the dynamic behavior of the train was carried out to evaluate its safety. In this study, a simplified method using an accelerometer(the method specified in UIC 518 OR) was chosen to analyze the safety of the train's dynamic behavior. The section chosen for analysis section was ${\pm}10{\sim}20km/h$ with respect to the maximum speed point. In addition, we analyzed the trend of this dynamic behavior with increasing speed by comparing the analyzed values with those of UIC 518 OR. The dynamic behavior results met the limit values of UIC 518 OR and the study indicates that this trend is predicted to continue at speeds above 354km/h.

  • With the acceleration of economic globalization, the development of aviation logistics plays an increasingly significant role in the logistics industry. As the foundation of aviation logistics development, airport terminals are attracting increasing attention. In this respect, the aim of this research is to analyze 65 academic papers on Chinese airport terminals from 2003 to 2020 by utilizing analytic keywords of academic papers and suggest the research trend of Chinese airport terminals. The SNA was adopted as research methodology. Airport Terminal, Boned, and Chinese Mainland were the keywords for the first period (2003-2008), while the second period (2009-2014) included the keywords such as China, DEA, Airport, and Flight Delay. For the third period (2015-2020), Airport Competitiveness and Aviation Network were also highly connected keywords. This indicates that with the growth of the economy, the research trend of China's airport terminals has been gradually expanding from infrastructure construction to network development. The results have implications on suggesting the research trend of Chinese airport terminals, and providing insights to the policy makers, academics, and practitioners in neighboring countries including Korea.

  • This paper describes a new objective methodology of seismic building damage assessment which is called Advanced Component Method(ACM). ACM is a major attempt to replace the conventional loss estimation procedure, which is based on subjective measures and the opinions of experts, with one that objectively measures both earthquake intensity and the response ol buildings. First, response of typical buildings is obtained analytically by nonlinear seismic static analysis, push-over analyses. The spectral displacement Is used as a measure of earthquake intensity in order to use Capacity Spectrum Method and the damage functions for each building component, both structural and non-structural, are developed as a function of component deformation. Examples of components Include columns, beams, floors, partitions, glazing, etc. A repair/replacement cost model is developed that maps the physical damage to monetary damage for each component. Finally, building response, component damage functions, and cost model were combined probabilistically, using Wonte Carlo simulation techniques, to develop the final damage functions for each building type. Uncertainties in building response resulting from variability in material properties and load assumptions were incorporated in the Latin Hypercube sampling technique. The paper also presents and compares ACM and conventional building loss estimation based on historical damage data and reported loss data.

  • In general, the seismic intensity deduced from instrumental data has been evaluated from the empirical relation between the intensity and the PGA. From the point of view that the degree of earthquake damage is more closely associated with the seismic intensity than with the observed PGA, JMA developed the instrumental seismic intensity (JMA instrumental intensity) meter that estimate the real-time seismic intensity from the observed strong motion data to obtain a more correct estimate of earthquake damage. The purpose of the present study is to propose a practical application of the JMA instrumental intensity in Korea. Since the occurrence of strong earthquakes is scarce in the Korean Peninsula, there is an insufficiency of strong motion data. As a result, strong motion data were synthesized by a stochastic procedure to satisfy the characteristics of a seismic source and crustal attenuation of the Peninsula. Six engineering ground motion parameters, including the JMA instrumental intensity, were determined from the synthesized strong motion data. The empirical relations between the ground motion parameters were then analyzed. Cluster analysis to classify the parameters into groups was also performed. The result showed that the JMA acceleration ($a_0$) could be classified into similar group with the spectrum intensity and the relatively distant group with the CAV (Cumulative Absolute Velocity). It is thought that the $a_0$ or JMA intensity can be used as an alternative criterion in the evaluation of seismic damage. On the other hand, attenuation relation equations for PGA and $a_0$ to be used in the prediction of seismic hazard were derived as functions of the moment magnitude and hypocentral distance.

  • A friction damper installed at a building shows nonlinear behavior since its stick and slip states are occurred repeatedly depending on the amplitude of external loadings to dissipate input energy. Friction damping is existed for the building with a friction damper. In additionally viscous one is inherently included. Therefore, the building installed in such combined damping is quite involved to find the analytical solution. In this study, first, displacement and acceleration characteristics are identified based on the exact solution for a single-degree-freedom building with a friction damper having both friction and viscous damping. Second, in free vibration, the equivalent viscous damping ratio is obtained by the energy dissipation. Third, numerical analysis is carried out to find response configuration with various friction force ratios. Fourth, corresponding equivalent viscous damping ratio is derived with the finding that the response reaches into steady-state for both friction and viscous damped structure. It is deduced using balance of input external energy and output dissipation energy for steady-state response. Finally, the equivalent viscous damping ratios of free or harmonic vibration are verified through nonlinear analysis.
