  • Korean government has been investing more than 400 billion KRW in R&D on renewable energy. This paper aims to measure the R&D efficiency of national R&D program in the field of renewable energy, and to identify the sources of inefficiency. 4,213 R&D projects supported by Korean government during 2009-2011 are analyzed by using Data Envelopment Analysis and statistical tests. Results implies as follows. First, hydrogen, bio, fuel cell, photovoltaic have higher R&D efficiency than other renewable energies. Second, universities conducted national R&D program more efficiently than firms did, and small and medium sized enterprises are more efficient than large sized enterprises. Third, R&D inefficiency is mainly caused by the lacks of patent performance rather than excessive R&D investment or academic paper performance.

  • The effect of Web-based project learning on the science achievement and attitude of middle school students was investigated. Four classes of 9th grade at a coed middle school were divided into control and experimental groups. Web-based project instruction in which students utilized the Web to interactively carry out their projects was put into practice with the experimental group, while traditional instruction was employed with the control group. Pre- and post-test achievement and attitude scores were estimated through an analysis of covariance. Web-based project instruction was seen to be more effective in enhancing students’ science achievement and attitude than traditional instruction. In particular, the former instruction was most useful for improving higher level students’ achievement and attitude among the higher, middle, and lower level students of both groups, based on their academic achievement. The effect of Web-based project may result in eradicating negative cognition about gender difference.

  • Korean entrepreneurship education has been focused on the subject selection and curriculum based research according to the stage of entrepreneurship process. But problem is happen in the theory based lecture and unrealistic content of entrepreneurship education. Recent studies in technology entrepreneurship recommend integrated approaches to educating students to operate in this space integrated programs span disciplinary lines, but more important, they combine coursework on fundamental concepts and processes with real team-based projects on technology commercialization. At the core of TI:GER(R) is a three-course academic track that provides instruction in technology commercialization processes with a focus on intellectual property/technology law and business fundamentals. Technology, management, and law are the key success content of entrepreneurship education and we need the approach the integration of these factors.

  • This stduy aimed to suggest a possible way for a new setting of interior design education through analyzing educational situations of domestic interior design societies. The study showed that interior design education should not follow expressive methods made from practical work which had been popular in the past and it should establish fundamental formation to make interior design education useful in industrial fields through active educationalindustrial complex. Interior design education is not possible without interrelationship with other professional fields and cooperative attitudes among them. The rapid development in the modern industrial world and the ever-growing information processing world regardless of ideology and regiional boundaries indicate that the future of interior design education will be no longer effective with traditional education systems. The idea suggested in this study may be understood as a bridge between the educational reality and its ideal in interior design teaching. The main points of the study are follows. First, the projects of advanced interior design should be focused on increasing the ability for problem solving rather than accumulating basic knowledge. Second, motivation is important for the maximization of the efficiency of educatiov. Therefore a few suggestions in establishing design conditions, as strategies of inducing 'attention', 'self-confidence', 'satisfaction', and 'relevance' are closely examined to propose practical application methods. Third, educational methods should be developed towards creativity in order to increase abilities of thinking and expressiov. Finally, it is necessary to explore various device which help internship participants to get experiences with a sense of practical situations in industrial fields. This could be possibly done by enforcing academic grades for the work done as an internship participation; by employing workmen in industrial fields as faculty members; and by bringing faculty members into actual industrial situations and providing workmen with lectures. A new approach for a better design education seems to be desirable for the future.

  • National Union Catalog presupposes an information infrastructure which permits users to identify and locate materials of all the domestic libraries and to share materials among libraries. Recently, there have been developed national union catalog projects in many countries using Z39.50 protocol implementation. In Korea, multi-union catalogs based on the types of libraries, i.e., public, academic, and special libraries, have been constructed separately. The virtual national union catalog which is a decentralized electronically accessible catalog unified by linking the databases of several institutions using Z39.50 is preferable to a union catalog implemented by a single centralized database. In this paper, hybrid union catalog is suggested with mixtures of centralized union catalogs and Z39.50-based distributed search systems for the development of a national union catalog. It is also suggested that the roles of a national library and centers for union catalog, and relationships between two types of institution for making sound ground for implementing the virtual Korean union catalog.

  • This study estimated indirect economic benefits of the introduction of Korean Spatial Information System. Korean academic society has been reluctant to consider indirect benefits as an item of benefits in cost-benefit analysis. Nevertheless, other countries including England recommend to consider some indirect benefits like option value as an important item of cost-benefit analysis, especially in the case of transportation projects. This study estimated indirect benefits of the introduction of Korean Spatial Information System using Contingent Valuation Methods: Indirect benefits of the project are so significant in terms of statistics and substantial in terms of magnitude that decision making can differ from the case without consideration of such indirect benefits.

  • In recent years, aviation-related safety-critical systems have been developed in Korea, but these products have not satisfied the specified requirements and thus have not been commercialized or commercialized. Due to increasing complexity of the modern aviation system, traditional verification and validation techniques are not sufficient to identify and reduce latent risks in the system. To overcome this shortcoming, a new method which is called 'Independent verification and validation (IV&V)' is suggested. However, academic researches on the effectiveness of this independent verification and validation have not been conducted domestically, and it is performed very rarely even overseas. Therefore, in this paper, we investigated the application of independent verification and validation of the safety-critical aviation systems performed by advanced aviation organizations, and analyzed various positive effects on projects. As a result of the analysis, IV&V shows that early error detection rate is increased, potential risk is mitigated early, and the complex reworking probability, which appears later in the development life cycle, is reduced, greatly preventing the development schedule and costs from increasing.

  • Objectives: Members of Korean Healthy Cities Partnership(KHCP) has increased rapidly since 2006 and adopted Active Living Environments(ALE) as common theme in 2015. Academic definition and categorization, needs assessment and operational planning for making active living environments were required from KHCP. Methods: Literatures review, survey to members of KHCP, specialist discussion and consultation with members of KHCP have been done from October of 2015 to February of 2016. Results: ALE included humane(social networks), physical and political resources. Three categories and 13 items for ALE were identified. Present actions among member cities were variable and especially immature in physical environments. Indicators for ALE were not secured stably. Requirements for policy and physical environmental approach and adolescent programme were high. Priority areas for education and technical assistance were master planning, guideline and case, program and policy development, partnership development, and networking among cities. Representative projects among member cities were somewhat different from ideal models. Conclusions: Policy and environmental approaches needs to be reinforeced systemically for members of KHCP including securing stable indicators. More education and technical assistance also needed sustainably.

  • Physical habitat assessment models based on Instream Flow Incremental Methodology have been developed as a decision making tool to estimate appropriate discharge for environmental flow and water use management. These models, however, require extensive knowledge on various academic disciplines, complicated input data, and empirical data. We propose a Simplified Habitat (SIMHAB) simulation model for the estimation of physical structure of fish habitat and environmental flow at the planning stage. SIMHAB is applied to a river system for which physical and ecological data are available, and its applicability is investigated. Simulated results appeared to be similar to field survey data and those of such models as PHABSIM and River2D. However, SIMHAB requires much less input data. As such, the proposed model, SIMHAB can easily be applicable to river restoration projects including designing of physical habitat, estimation of environmental flow, and water resource management.
