Properties of Polymer-Modified Cement Mortars Using Methylmethacrylate - Butyl Acrylate Latexes (MMA/BA 합성 라텍스 혼입 폴리머 시멘트 모르타르의 성질)

  • The Purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the monomer ratio on properties of the polymer-modified mortars using methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate latexes, and to obtain basic data necessary to develop appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. This paper deals with the effect of the monomer ratio on the typical properties of polymer-modified mortars with methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate latexes. The polymer latex-modified mortars are prepared with 5, 10, IS and 20% of polymer cement ratio respectively, and properties of modified mortars such as water absorption, compressive and flexural strengths, chloride-ion penetration depth are tested. The test results indicate that the monomer ratio is very important factors to characterize the strength properties of polymer-modified mortars, but the water absorption and chloride-ion penetration depth are influenced by polymer-cement ratio rather than monomer ratios.

External Optical Modulator Using a Low-cost Fabry-Perot LD for Multicasting in a WDM-PON

  • An external optical modulation using absorption s in a Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD), has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated for multicasting in a WDM-PON. The center wavelengths of absorption s in an FP-LD move to short-wavelength rapidly by only a small current (~1 mA) injection. If the current injection is stopped, the s move back to the original position. Such a movement of the s can make the FP-LD act as an external optical modulator, which is found to modulate at a maximum modulation speed of 800 Mbps or more. For a multicasting transmitter in a WDM-PON, the proposed modulator can be cost-effectively applied to a multi-wavelength laser source with the same periodicity of the longitudinal mode. Instead of the multi-wavelength laser source, tunable-LDs are used for experiments. The 32 channel multicasting system with the proposed modulator has been demonstrated, showing power penalties of 1.53~4.15 dB at a bit error rate of $10^{-9}$ with extinction ratios better than 14.5 dB at 622 Mbps.

The Mortar Properties of Portland Cements Blended with Modified Coal Ashes (가공된 석탄재를 사용한 석탄재혼합시멘트의 모르터 특성)

  • For the development of multi-functional materials which has water reducing power, air entraining power and waterproofing power as well as blending additive in cement mortar the coal ash was modified with asphalt-stearic acid or asphalt-boiled oil mixtures by mechanical treatment. And the physical properties of cement mortar blended with modified coal ashes were compared with those of the water-tightness-cement mortar and the ordinary-portland-cement mortar added with AE.water reducing agent. The mortar of coalash-blend-cement modified with asphalt-stearic mixture was increased acid about 20% in initial strengths and decreased about 20% in water absorption ratio than those of ordinary coalash-blend-cement. The mortar of coalash-blend-cement modified with asphalt-bolied oil mixture was similar to the cement mortar added with AE.water reducing agent in water reduction ratio, air entraining conents and the initial strengths, also was similar to the water-tightness-cement mortar in water absorption and water permeability ratios.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the properties of polymer-modified mortars using asphalt emulsion. The polymer-modified mortars using asphalt emulsion with various asphalt-cement ratios are prepared, and tested for flexural and compressive strengths, water absorption and permeability, carbonation, Cl ion penetration and chemical resistance. From the test results, the flexural and compressive strengths, water absorption and permeability, carbonation and Cl ion penetration depths of polymer-modified mortars using asphalt emulsion tend to be decreased with increasing asphalt-cement ratio, and chemical resistance is improved. It is evident that polymer-modified mortars using asphalt emulsion having an excellent properties as a waterproof and finish materials can be produced.

  • The purpose of this paper is to manufacture the non-sintered ceramic used lime and industrial waste. The used materials were basalt powder sludge, calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH)2) and additives such as calcium stearate and $TiO_2$. The mixing ratios between Ca(OH)2 and sludge were 5:5, 6:4 and 8:2, respectively. The ceramic forms were pressured by 100, 200 and 300 bar and cured in 14% CO2 for 12 days. The behaviors of compressive strength, specific gravity, water absorption and pH of ceramic form were investigated. The results were compressive strength of over 36 MPa, water absorption of over 8.8%, pH value of over 12.3. And these results satisfied GR F 4006 and 4031 standard.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of concrete using waste activated carbon. Materials used were ordinary portlant cement, crushed coarse aggregate, natural fine aggregate, waste activated carbon, and superplasticizer. The substitution ratios of waste activated carbon were 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10%. The unit weight was decreased and water absorption ratio was increased with increasing the waste activated carbon content, respectively. When the substitution ratio of waste activated carbon was 3%, compressive strength, flexural strength and dynamic modulus of elastisity were more higher than that of the ordinary portland cement (OPC), and it was decreased with increasing the waste activated carbon content, respectively. The most effective contents of waste activated carbon was 2% in performance and 4% in practical use Accordingly, waste activated carbon can be used for concrete material.

  • In this study, absorption behaviors of absorbents and additives were measured for removing of $H_2S$ and COS from syn-gas in IGCC process, such as MDEA and HMDA. The experimental variables were concentration of absorbents and reaction temperature. From these experiments, the loading ratios of $H_2S$ were decreased with increasing of concentration of absorbents and absorption temperatures. These results will be applied to basic data for designing of $H_2S$ removal process in IGCC.

  • Fluorinated polymaleimides with high thermal stability and low optical absorption loss in the optical communication wavelength of $1.55{\mu}m$ were investigated for application in low-loss waveguide materials. The fluorinated polymaleimides were prepared from two monomers phenylmaleimide (H-PMI) and pentafluorophenylmaleimide (F-PMI). All synthesized copolymers had high thermal stability (decomposition temperature $(T_d)=380-430^{\circ}C$). The refractive index of the copolymers could be tuned from 1.4969 to 1.5950 in the TE mode and from 1.4993 to 1.5932 for the TM mode at 632.8 nm by copolymerizing different weight ratios of H-PMI and F-PMI. The refractive index of the copolymers decreased with increasing F-PMI content. In addition, when the amount of F-PMI was increased, optical loss and absorption loss at 632.8 nm and 1550 nm, respectively, decreased.

  • $C_{22}$-Quinolium-TCNQ LB films were deposited on the glass substrates by Langmuir-Blodgett technique at room temperature. Transfer ratios and UV-visible absorption spectra were studied for X, Y and Z-Types. Absorption in Z-Type was higher than X and Y-Types, which indicates a better arrangement in this type. We have also investigated dc electrical conductivities and ac responses along the horizontal and vertical direction to the film surface. As a result, we are able to determine the capacitance of film and the measured horizontal conductivity was about $10^{-7}$~$10^{-8}$ S/cm.

Properties of concrete incorporating granulated blast furnace slag as fine aggregate

  • The present work investigates about the development of a novel construction material by utilizing Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBS), an industrial waste product, as substitution of natural fine aggregates. For this, experimental work has been carried out to determine the influence of GBS on the properties of concrete such as compressive strength (CS), modulus of elasticity, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), chloride penetration, water absorption (WA) volume of voids (VV) and density. Concrete mixes of water/cement (w/c) ratios 0.45 and 0.5, and incorporating 20%, 40% and 60% of GBS as partial replacement of natural fine aggregate (sand) are designed for this study. The results of the experimental investigation depict that CS of concrete mixes increases with the increasing percentages of GBS. Moreover, the decrease in chloride penetration, WA and VV, and improvement in the modulus of elasticity, UPV, density of concrete is reported with the increasing percentage of GBS in concrete.
