Pneumatic cylinder is widely used for mechanical handling systems. Often, the impact occurs at the both ends points of pneumatic cylinder and generates destructive shock with in the structural operating members of the machine or equipment. To reduce the damage of system, therefore, shock absorbing devices are required. Cushioning of pneumatic cylinders at one or both ends of piston stroke is used to reduce the shock and vibration. The cylinder body have to withstand under high velocity and load. In this research, the pneumatic cushioning cylinder moving tests have been conducted for different load mass and supply pressure. The velocity of pneumatic cylinder actuation system with multiple orifice cushion sleeve which is set vertically controled with meter-in/out system. This study examines the dynamic characteristics of pneumatic cylinder with cushion devices. It turns out that the cushion pressure is mainly a function of the external load rather than the supply pressure. The cushion region characteristics was also revealed in the meter-in system.

The molecules of the substance absorbing a light obtains the radiant energy to the wavelength of the light to make thermal reactions or photochemical reactions. Specially, thermal reactions by infrared radiation brings about physical damage by temperature rise process or temperature drop process of the material. In this study, a measuring system was set up to measure the temperature rise and temperature drop of each sample by infrared radiation from light source. And a physical demage of samples by infrared radiation were measured using the measuring system.

The factors influencing the floor impact sound insulation include floor finishing materials, shock absorbing floors (slabs included), and ceiling structures. The ceilings of the apartment houses, currently built in Korea, are set up with lower parts of slabs and paper finishing, or with double floors for protecting against floor impact sounds in order to improve the sound insulating performance. The most common the method of ceiling structure construction consists of 'wood boarded frames + Gypsum boards + ceiling papers', which is called the wood boarded frame method. This study aimed to measures and evaluates floor impact sound insulation by which the ceiling space are widened according to suppression system is added in apartment house ceiling structure.

This study deals with design and application of silencer to reduce the exhaust noise, especially at the low frequency range below 200 Hz which is main contribution for the bridge wing noise and the external noise of ships. The designed silencer is composed of side branch resonator, Helmholtz resonator and absorbing material. The resonating frequencies of resonators are set to be the firing order frequencies of the generator engine. Based on the on-board measurement result, it is verified that the designed silencer can effectively reduce the exhaust noise of generator engine.

Seven kinds of hysteric model were used and classified three groups considering the absorbing capacities of strain energy for each model. Four kids of each model. Four kinds of strong motion earthquake record (two of them were recorded in Japan and the others in U.S.A) are used. The yield strength of building was set in the ratio to the maximum input acceleration (Yield Strength / Maximum Acceleration = 0.5~3.0). Natural periods of structures were varied 0.1~3.0 second with an interval of 0.1 second. First group : Elastic-Plastic model, Ramberg-Osgood model Second group : Degrading Tri-liner model, Takeda model Third group : Slip model, Origin model, Max-D model Elastic-plastic response spectra were calculated for response velocities, displacement, energy input, ductility factors, accumulated ductility factors. The equivalent response values of M.D.O.F systems against S.D.O.F system were calculated to compare the relationship of two systems.
The need for the protection of workers in many industrial workstations has long been recognized, and many type of protective equipment have been devised. In many protective equipment designs, this study set limits to the safety helmet. The direct closed head impact problem was idealized as a linear-damped spring model. This study concerns what properties of helment should afford optimal protection in a direct closed head impact problem. The solution to the problem was achieved through analytic method and numerical computation. The answer was found in terms of 4 parameters : 1) rigidity of shell, 2) viscosity of shell, 3)rigidity of harness, 4) viscosity of harness. The choices are as follows 1) to reduce the rigidity value of harness as small as possible 2) to increase the viscosity value of harness as large as possible. 3) to select the rigidity value of shell sufficient for preventing a breakage.

When a light is projected upon a material, part of its radiation energy is absorbed and the rest is reflected or transmitted according to the nature of the material. The molecules of the substance absorbing a light obtains the radiation energy to the wavelength of the light to make photochemical degradation by ultraviolet ray or thermal reactions like physical damage by infrared ray. The degree of damage by radiation energy varies to the substances of materials, the spectral power distribution of the light source and the duration of irradiation. Because the damage brings about a devaluation of material and once damaged, it is irretrievable, it is necessary to minimize the damage and conserve the native quality of a material by a protective lighting system. A measuring system was set up to measure the temperature rise of each sample by infrared radiation from light sources. And the temperature rise and temperature distribution by various infrared lamps were measured with varying time.

To detect dust-loaded air-mass over land and ocean, we propose an index, which is essentially the difference in Rayleigh-corrected reflectance between 412 and 443 nm bands of SeaWiFS. Radiative transfer simulations are conducted to show that the index is linearly related to the optical thickness of modeled dust-contaminated aerosol while showing insensitivity against non-absorbing model aerosols. Asian SeaWiFS data set of 2001 spring is used to produce daily composite imagery of the index, which compares well with TOMS Aerosol Index and with predicted aerosol optical thickness predicted by CFORS chemical weather forecast.

This paper provides a comprehensive study of optimum design of a helicopter tailrotor driveshaft made of the flexible matrix composites (FMCs). Since the driveshaft transmits power while subjected to large bending deformation due to aerodynamic loadings, the FMCs can be ideal for enhancing the drivetrain performance by absorbing the lateral deformation without shaft segmentation. However, the increased lateral flexibility and high internal damping of the FMCs may induce whirling instability at supercritical operating conditions. Thus, the purpose of optimization in this paper is to find a set of tailored FMC parameters that compromise between the lateral flexibility and the whirling stability while satisfying several criteria such as torsional buckling safety and the maximum shaft temperature at steadystate conditions. At first, the drivetrain was modeled based on the finite element method and the classical laminate theory with complex modulus approach. Then, an objective function was defined as a combination of an allowable bending deformation and external damping and a genetic algorithm was applied to search for an optimum set with respect to ply angles and stack sequences. Results show that an optimum laminate consists of two groups of layers: (i) one has ply angles well below 45$^{\circ}$ and the other far above 45$^{\circ}$ and (ii) the number of layers with low ply angles is much bigger than that with high ply angles. It is also found that a thick FMC shaft is desirable for both lateral flexibility and whirling stability. The genetic algorithm was effective in converging to several local optimums, whose laminates exhibit similar patterns as mentioned above.

This paper is concerned with designing and implementing the Internet shopping mall by using virtual reality-driven avatar and web decision support system. Traditionally, the Internet shopping mall has been designed based on the combination of several hyperlinks, images, and tents. However, this sort of approach results in a lower performance because possible customers cannot make more accurate shopping decisions. To overcome this kind of pitfalls facing the current Internet shopping malls, we propose using a combination of virtual reality and web DSS. The main virtues of our proposed approach to designing the Internet shopping mall are as follows: First, the virtual reality technique is emerging as one of alternatives guaranteeing a sense of reality for customers' part and facilitating the complex process of shopping decision makings. Especially, the avatar, which is an artificially designed man working on the Internet, can make easy and absorbing the Internet shopping-related decision making processes. Second, the web DSS approach can provide an effective decision support mechanism for customers. Especially, we design a set of intelligent agents for the proposed web DSS. Experimental results with an illustrative example showed that our proposed approach can yield a new Internet shopping mall paradigm with which customers can benefit from a high level of decision support functions.
