  • This paper examines the direct effects of board independence and also its interaction effects with CEO's firm specific experience on firm performance. The findings in an hierarchial regression analysis of multiyear sample of computer hardware companies indicate that independent, outsider directors are beneficial to firms' performance when CEO has high-level of firm specific experience whereas it is harmful when CEO has low-level of firm specific experience. However, separating the positions of board chair and chief executive officer that has been used as another means for increasing board independence does not influence to firms' performance. These findings imply that researchers in corporate governance should reconsider the relative weight placed on directors' monitoring and assistance role. Rather than focusing predominantly on directors' willingness or ability to control executives, in future research scholars should yield more productive results by focusing on the assistance directors provide in bringing valued resources to the CEOs and in serving as a source of advice and counsel especially for CEO's improvement of management technique. In addition, they should pay more attention on identifying intervening processes between board and firm performance in order to provide optimal governance mechanisms and configurations to practitioners.

  • The abstracts written in Korean presented at the Fall Meeting of the Korean Earth Science Society held at the Kangwon National University in October, 1999 were reviewed. They are dotted with foreign expressions and obscure wordings as well as difficult expressions and very long sentences. The foreign expressions are those originated from Japanese, English, and Chinese expressions and words. Several suggestions are made to increase the ability to write good abstracts and articles in Korean on the earth sciences. They include reading many books on natural sciences for general readers, writing sentences not exceeding 20 words, critical reading by professor or colleagues, and open mind to accept their criticisms. The authors should pay attention not to commit various errors shown in Table 2 in this paper.

  • This study was carried out to explore the actual condition of family-friendly education of corporations and organizations supporting them for the purpose of activating the family-friendly certification system. The researches on the family-friendly education of corporations or related organizations have not become an object of attention, although the policies of family-friendly corporations have been the major concern of researchers who have conducted studies on the balancing between work and family. For the first time, this study investigated the family-friendly education programs of corporations and organizations supporting them. In addition to this work, interviews with laborers were performed to learn the actual participation in the education. The results showed that even corporations selected as excellent corporations by the government scarcely provided family-friendly educations and few laborers participated in them. The most educations provided by corporations were for the improvement of work ability or job training. Education for family concentrated only on the role of the father. The focus of educations supporting corporations was biased to the view of corporation or family, not balanced between the two. So it was suggested that researchers should pay attention to developing diverse education programs encompassing the whole stages of life cycle and the balancing between corporation and family.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess elementary student's ability of measuring length, area, and volume and reading metric scales. The findings of this study were as follows. All students were successful in measuring without scale, regardless of grades. But they were less successful in measuring the task using standard and nonstandard scales. Especially, in measuring area, lower grade students were not able to perform the task using nonstandard instruments, but higher grade students were able to perform the task. Measuring area using grade paper was least successful for sixth graders. In measuring volume, students under fifth grade read the upper scale when using graduated cylinder. In measuring by direct comparison, students were more successful in measuring length than in measuring area and volume using given material. The use of given nonstandard material was successful for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. In measuring using metric scale, lower grade students did not pay attention to the zero of the scale, but just read the end point. Higher grade students considered both zero and end points.

  • Many techniques have been developed for reconstruction of the hand; however, less attention has been paid to foot reconstruction techniques. In particular, reconstruction of the forefoot and big toe has been considered a minor procedure despite the importance of these body parts for standing and walking. Most of the weight load on the foot is concentrated on the forefoot and big toe, whereas the other toes have a minor role in weight bearing. Moreover, the forefoot and big toe are important for maintaining balance and supporting the body when changing directions. Recently, attention has been focused on the aesthetic appearance and functional aspects of the body, which are important considerations in the field of reconstructive surgery. In patients for whom flap reconstruction in the forefoot and big toe is planned, clinicians should pay close attention to flap survival as well as functional and cosmetic outcomes of surgery. In particular, it is important to assess the ability of the flap to withstand functional weight bearing and maintain sufficient durability under shearing force. Recovery of protective sensation in the forefoot area can reduce the risk of flap loss and promote rapid rehabilitation and functional recovery. Here, we report our experience with two cases of successful reconstruction of the forefoot and big toe with a sensate anterolateral thigh flap, with a review of the relevant literature.

  • The results of analyzing the cognition of CPR by college students who major in public health or not order to enhance the educational efficiency of first aid ability and its expansion are as follows. 1. In case of students majoring in public health, the students who have the knowledge of term 'CPR' are 95.3% of total 300 students and 62.6% of the students who don't major in public health know it. In the item test of examining the degree of theoretical knowledge of CPR, the cases who know all 12 items are 5.2% and 1.6% respectively in cases who major in public health and don't major in it and it is judged that the extension of educational opportunity for them should be urgent. 2. The students who have experienced the practice of CPR are 20.6% in case who major in public health and 7.4% in other case. Therefore it seems to desirable that indirect field experience should be obtained by strengthening practice centered education. 3. The order of practice to examine the CPR ability is asked and the students who show very good remark are just 21~22% in both cases and they conducted very ineffective CPR and it is examined that they did first aid which may a serious damage to patients. Then the cases who recovered pulse and respiration after CPR were very low as 28.8% in the students who major in public health and 35.7% in others. It is therefore considered that the exact education of conducting the maintenance of respiratory trace, artificial respiration and CPR is necessary. 4. The cases who had the education of CPR were 51% in the students who major in public health and 39.4% in others, who had little opportunities to have CPR and 92.5~93.2% in both groups fee the necessity of continuous education and it is very encouraging to extend the education of CPR. 5. The education of CPR is mainly done at school (70.3~79.4%) and from teachers (52.7~55.4%) and 71.2% of the students majoring in public health responded that it is good for them to have education of CPR at school and lecture by first-aider and 58.9% of others did it. The cases who ask for lecture by the Professors of Dept. of First-Aid are 11.8 in students majoring in public health and 13.1% in others and it is judged that lecture by them having the theoretical foundation and first-aider with practical ability will be desirable. 6. On teaching methods, 57.5% of the cases majoring in public health and 63.3% of others ask for practice and 20% of both groups need theory centered teaching. 7. On lecture fee, 83% of the cases majoring in public health and 83.3% of others consider it should be free and 8~11.8% who are to pay for 10,000 won and it is judged that it should be opened and operated as liberal arts by college in the dimension of lifelong education. 8. On the objects of education, 83% of cases majoring in public health and 66.6% of others consider it should be conducted in people of all ages and both sexes and it is known that everyone recognizes the necessity of popularizing the education of first-aid.

  • This paper analyzed the improvement of cognitive level of the students and interactions which occurred in each step of free-topic scientific inquiry to help science teachers understand free-topic scientific inquiry better. Free-topic scientific inquiry is helpful to students with a deep strategic learning goal orientation type or a deep strategic ability goal orientation type in their transition (2B/3A) of cognitive levels. Most students have difficulties in the phase of establishing topics and hypotheses. The result says that the discussion techniques are improved through free-topic scientific inquiry, but the quality of interaction is not easily improved. The deep strategic learning goal orientation type concretizes opinion through interaction in free-topic scientific inquiry. The deep strategic ability goal orientation type are actively involve in the interaction, but they pay no attention to the process because they stick to the result. The surface strategic ability goal orientation type can not deepen a discussion due to high frequency of low level inquiry. However, the frequency of high level inquiry increases through free topic scientific inquiry operation. As a result, the characteristics of free-topic scientific inquiry were discussed and the educational implications of the progress of free-topic scientific inquiry and the organization of grouping were drawn.
