  • We investigated complex damped modes in beams in the presence of a viscoelastic layer sandwiched between two elastic layers. The problem was solved using two approaches, (1) Rayleigh beam theory and analyzed using the Ritz method, and (2) by using 2D plane stress elasticity based finite-element method. The damping in the layers was modeled using the complex modulus. Simply-supported, cantilever, and viscously supported boundary conditions were considered in this study. Simple trigonometric functions were used as admissible functions in the Ritz method. The key idea behind sandwich structure is to increase damping in a beam as affected by the presence of a highly-damped core layer vibrating mainly in shear. Different assumptions are utilized in the literature, to model shear deformation in the core layer. In this manuscript, we used FEM without any kinematic assumptions for the transverse shear in both the core and elastic layers. Moreover, numerical examples were studied, where the base and constraining layers were also damped. The loss factor was calculated by modal strain energy method, and by solving a complex eigenvalue problem. The efficiency of the modal strain energy method was tested for different loss factors in the core layer. Complex mode shapes of the beam were also examined in the study, and a comparison was made between viscoelastically and viscously damped structures. The numerical results were compared with those available in the literature, and the results were found to be satisfactory.

  • The analytic and numerical solution of the 1$\frac{1}{2}$-layer and 2$\frac{1}{2}$-layer models are derived. The large coastal-sea level drop and the fast westward speed of the anticyclonic gyre due to strong offshore winds using two ocean models are investigated. The models are forced by wind stress fields similar in structure to the intense mountain-pass jets(${\sim}$20 dyne/$cm^{2}$) that appear in the Gulfs of Tehuantepec and Papagayo in the Central America for periods of 3${\sim}$7 days. Analytic and numerical solutions compare favorably with observations, the large sea-level drop (${\sim}$30 cm) at the coast and the fast westward propagation speeds (${\sim}$13 km/day) of the gyres. The coastal sea-level drop is enhanced by several factors: horizontal mixing, enhanced forcing, coastal geometry, and the existence of a second active layer in the 2$\frac{1}{2}$-layer model. Horizontal mixing enhances the sea-level drop because the coastal boundary layer is actually narrower with mixing. The forcing ${\tau}$/h is enhanced near the coast where h is thin. Especially, in analytic solutions to the 2$\frac{1}{2}$-layer model the presence of two baroclinic modes increases the sea-level drop to some degree. Of theses factors the strengthened forcing ${\tau}$/h has the largest effect on the magnitude of the drop, and when all of them are included the resulting maximum drop is -30.0 cm, close to observed values. To investigate the processes that influence the propagation speeds of anticyclonic gyre, several test wind-forced calculations were carried out. Solutions to dynamically simpler versions of the 1$\frac{1}{2}$-layer model show that the speed is increased both by ${\beta}$-induced self-advection and by larger h at the center ofthe gyres. Solutions to the 2$\frac{1}{2}$-layer model indicate that the lower-layer flow field advects the gyre westward and southward, significantly increasing their propagation speed. The Papagayo gyre propagates westward at a speed of 12.8 km/day, close to observed speeds.

  • Recently, many state-of-art spectroscopy techniques are used to unravel the mysteries of condensed matters. And numerous heterostructures have provided a new avenue to search for new emergent phenomena. Especially, near the interface, various forms of symmetry-breaking can appear, which induces many novel phenomena. Although these intriguing phenomena can be emerged at the interface, by using conventional measurement techniques, the experimental investigations have been limited due to the buried nature of interface. One of the ways to overcome this limitation is in situ investigation of the layer-by-layer evolution of the electronic structure with increasing of the thickness. Namely, with very thin layer, we can measure the electronic structure strongly affected by the interface effect, but with thick layer, the bulk property becomes strong. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is powerful tool to directly obtain electronic structure, and it is very surface sensitive. Thus, the layer-by-layer evolution of the electronic structure in oxide heterostructure can be investigated by using in situ ARPES. LaNiO3 (LNO) heterostructures have recently attracted much attention due to theoretical predictions for many intriguing quantum phenomena. The theories suggest that, by tuning external parameters such as misfit strain and dimensionality in LNO heterostructure, the latent orders, which is absent in bulk, including charge disproportionation, spin-density-wave order and Mott insulator, could be emerged in LNO heterostructure. Here, we performed in situ ARPES studies on LNO films with varying the misfit strain and thickness. (1) By using LaAlO3 (-1.3%), NdGaO3 (+0.3%), and SrTiO3 (+1.7%) substrates, we could obtain LNO films under compressive strain, nearly strain-free, and tensile strain, respectively. As strain state changes from compressive to tensile, the Ni eg bands are rearranged and cross the Fermi level, which induces a change of Fermi surface (FS) topology. Additionally, two different FS superstructures are observed depending on strain states, which are attributed to signatures of latent charge and spin orderings in LNO films. (2) We also deposited LNO ultrathin films under tensile strain with thickness between 1 and 10 unit-cells. We found that the Fermi surface nesting effect becomes strong in two-dimensions and significantly enhances spin-density-wave order. The further details are discussed more in presentation. • Direct numerical simulations were performed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow subjected to spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces in the near wall region. A fully implicit fractional step method was employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses were obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electromagnetic forces. The decrease in production is responsible fur the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques were used to observe the response of streamwise vortices and streak structures to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are affected by spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces. Following the stopping of the electromagnetic force, the flow eventually relaxes back to a two-dimensional equilibrium boundary layer.

  • Efficient electrodes are devised for organic luminescent device(OLED). ITO electrode is treated with $O_2$ plasma. In order to inject hole efficiently, there is proposed the shape of anode that inserted plasma polymerized films as buffer layer between anode and organic layer using thiophene monomer. In the case of device inserted the buffer layer by using the plasma polymerization after $O_2$ plasma processing for ITO transparent electrode, since it forms the stable interface and reduce the moving speed of hole, the recombination of hole and electronic are made in the emitting layer. Therefore it realized the device capability of two times in the aspect of luminous efficiency than the device which do not be inserted the buffer layer. Experiments are limited to the device that has the structure of TPD/$AIq_3$, however, the aforementioned electrodes can similarly applied to the organic luminous device and the Polymer luminous device.

  • Novel electroluminescent materials, polymer material, PU-BCN and low molar mass material, D-BCN with the same chromophores were designed and synthesized. A molecular structure of chromophore was composed of bisstyrylbenzene derivative with cyano groups as electron injection and transport and phenylamine groups as hole injection and transport. Device structures with PU-BCN and D-BCN as an emission layer were fa-bricated, which were a single-layer device(SL), Indium-tin oxide(ITO)/emission layer/MgAg, and two kinds of double-layer devices which were composed of ITO/emission layer/oxadiazole derivative/MgAg as a DL-E device and ITO/triphenylamine derivative/emission layer/MgAg as a DL-H device. The two emission materials, PU-BCN and D-BCN with the same emission-chromophore were evaluated as having excellent performance of charge injection and transport and revealed almost the same emission characteristics in high current density. EL emission maximum peaks of two material were detected at about 640 nm wavelength of red emission region.

  • Using first principles calculations, we investigated the interface structure effects on the magnetic properties of the Fe/BaTiO3 system. On the BaO-terminated surface, a Fe monolayer is formed as two Fe atoms are adsorbed on the top sites of Ba and O in the ($1{\times}1$) surface unit and a Fe ML is formed on the TiO2-terminated surface as two Fe atoms are adsorbed on the two O top sites. The magnetic anisotropy energy of Fe was higher on the TiO2?-erminated surface (1.5 eV) than on the BaO-terminated surface (0.5 eV). The decomposed electron density of the states showed that the stronger hybridization of Fe with the TiO2 layer than with the BaO layer is the most important reason for the higher magnetic anisotropy energy.

  • Pressureless-sintered polycrystalline alumina and carbon steel were joined with Ag-33.5Cu-1.5Ti (wt%) brazing alloy. SEM observation revealed that two reaction layers with different thicknesses were continuously formed between the alumina and the brazing alloy. A thick layer formed on the brazing alloy side was identified as Ti3(Cu0.93Al0.07)3O phase with diamond cubic structure. Another thin layer adjacent to the alumina was revealed as $\delta$-TiO phase of which the crystal structure was HCP with a lattice parameter of a0=0.419 nm and c0=0.284 nm. It was confirmed using XPS analysis that $\delta$-TiO was formed directly by a redox reaction of alumina with titanium ir, molten brazing alloy.

  • The present paper investigates the simultaneous resonance behavior of spiral stiffened multilayer functionally graded (SSMFG) cylindrical shells with internal and external functionally graded stiffeners under the two-term large amplitude excitations. The structure is embedded within a generalized nonlinear viscoelastic foundation which is composed of a two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak foundation augmented by a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model with a nonlinear cubic stiffness. The cylindrical shell has three layers consist of ceramic, FGM, and metal. The exterior layer of the cylindrical shell is rich ceramic while the interior layer is rich metal and the functionally graded material layer is located between these layers. With regard to classical shells theory, von-Kármán equation, and Hook law, the relations of stress-strain are derived for shell and stiffeners. The spiral stiffeners of the cylindrical shell are modeled according to the smeared stiffener technique. According to the Galerkin method, the discretized motion equation is obtained. The simultaneous resonance is obtained using the multiple scales method. Finally, the influences of different material and geometrical parameters on the system resonances are investigated comprehensively.
