  • Jeju island has an area of $1,810km^2$ and is considered the largest island in South Korea. In Jeju Island the average annual precipitation is 1,957mm. About 54% of precipitation is estimated to be lost due to evapo-transpiration and direct runoff, and the remainder is recharged. Historically springs and puddles were the island's primary sources of water. However, after 1970 all sectors, including the urban and industrial sectors depended solely on groundwater as their water resource. As vast amount of water is being recharged the Island has many springs, especially near the coastlines. Historlcally, spring of Jeju Island formed village and make it possible to continue a life. Also it produces many values such as the spring related story, culture, tourism and ecosystems. Especially, the naturally rare phenomenon that about 900 springs appear over the whole area of Jeju Island makes it possible to call it as a natural heritage. As a result of this most springs have either been destroyed or been in the state of neglect. In some cases it has been observed that springs were preserved by nature, however majority of the cases saw springs losing their own nature as a result of abandonment. It was recorded that there were 911 springs in Jeju Island with most of them being distributed along the coast, which consequently increases their susceptibility to seawater intrusion. The objective of this study is therefore to analyze Eco-cultural and Engineering characteristics about springs in the island, highlighting its past utilization and reestablishing its potential as a source of spring.

  • In this study, we try to investigate the spillover effects of volatility in international tourists arrivals between Korea and US, Japan, China by using the multivariate BEKK model from January 2005 to January 2013. In the results of this study, after the global financial crisis, we found a cointegration relationship and tourist arrivals of Japan were adjusted to recovery in the short term. Also tourists arrivals from China and Japan showed the long-term elasticity. In the conditional mean equation of a BEKK model, there were the spillover effects. And in the conditional variance equation, ARCH(${\epsilon}^2_t$) coefficients showed a strong influence on the arrivals of their own and the spillover effects and the asymmetric effects on the volatility of China and Japan arrivals. In GARCH(${\sigma}^2_t$) coefficients showed the asymmetric effects and the spillover effects of the conditional volatility among source arrivals. Therefore, we examined the asymmetric reaction of one-way or two-way tourist arrivals between source countries and Korea and the spillover effects related to tourists arrivals of source countries to Korea. We has confirmed a causal relationship between some of the tourists arrivals from source countries to korea.

  • Many small island nations rely on groundwater as their only other source of freshwater in addition to rainwater harvesting. The volume of groundwater resource of small island nations are further limited by their smaller surface area and specific hydrogeology. The rapid growth of population and tourism has led to increasing water demands and pollution of available groundwater resources. The predicted climate change effects pose significant threats to the already vulnerable freshwater lens of small islands in the form of rise in sea level, coastal inundation, saltwater intrusion, varied pattern of precipitation leading to droughts and storm surges. The effects of climate change are further aggravated by manmade stresses like increased pumping. Thus small island water resources are highly threatened under the effects of climate change. But due to the limited technical and financial capacity most of the small island developing states were unable to conduct detailed technical investigations on the effects of climate change on their water resources. In this study, we investigate how well small island countries are preparing for climate change. The current state of freshwater resources, impacts of predicted climate change along with adaptation and management strategies planned and implemented by small island countries are reviewed. Proper assessment and management practices can aid in sustaining the groundwater resources of small islands under climate change.

  • This study was designed to investigate the possible utilization of Ligularia stenocephala as a source of functional ingredients in white bread. In terms of color values, as more Ligularia stenocephala leaf powder was added, 'lightness,' 'redness,' and 'yellowness' decreased in the crust, while in the bread crumb 'lightness' and 'yellowness' decreased, but 'redness' increased. When 5.0%, 7.5%, or 10.0% Ligularia stenocephala leaf powder was substituted for an equivalent amount of strong flour, the ratio of the volume and specific volume of white bread decreased while its weight increased. In the texture measurements for the white breads, the hardness decreased slightly with the addition of 2.5% Ligularia stenocephala leaf powder, but increased with the addition of 5.0%, 7.5%, or 10.0% Ligularia stenocephala leaf powder. The addition of the Ligularia stenocephala leaf powder also increased the springiness and gumminess of the white bread. The highest sensory scores for color, flavor, taste, texture, and overall acceptance for both the student group and the baker group were obtained from white bread with 5.0% Ligularia stenocephala leaf powder. The highest sensory scores for the housewife group for taste, texture, and overall acceptance were obtained from control bread. Through the results of these experiments, we conclude that the highest quantity of Ligularia stenocephala leaf powder content should be no more than 5.0% when making bread with added Ligularia stenocephala leaf powder.

  • E-marketplace is a kind of B2B e-Business system that supports business transactions among companies. If e-marketplace is revitalized, we expect not only the development of related industry but also decrease of transaction cost among companies. It is necessary for the introduction and revitalization of e-marketplace in tourist industry from this point of view. Participants of tour e-marketplace are tour-related companies(travel agencies, lodging enterprises, shipping enterprises, etc.). Also tourists want to search a variety of tour products or contents. So tour e-marketplace has characteristics of B2C e-Business systems as well as B2B e-Business systems at once. The purpose of this study is to classify success factors that determine characteristics of tour e-marketplace through statistics survey from e-marketplace factors related tourism websites. First of all, we analyze success factors of B2B and B2C e-marketplace. Then we will set up influence factors of tour e-marketplace and conduct a survey about success factors of tour e-marketplace. Therefore, we could expect to find these good attributes in tour e-marketplace success through logistic regression and decision tree analysis from source data.
