  • A light collecting probe named Multi-colored Integrated Receiving Optics (MICRO) is experimentally examined to verify its performance. For these purposes, the time-series signals of MICRO probe is compared with those of electrostatic probe and light-guided probe by monitoring, for example, such as OH radical chemiluminescence, CH radical band and droplet Mie scattering. In addition, the experiment was conducted by using laminar premixed Bunsen flame, turbulent premixed Bunsen flame and premixed spray flame, respectively. It was confirmed that the performance of MICRO probe was very useful and convenient to obtain the chemiluminescence signals from local regions in turbulent premixed Bunsen flame and premixed spray flame.

  • We developed a 2-channel fiber-optic temperature sensor (FOTS) using a temperature sensing probe, a fiber-optic coupler, transmitting optical fiber, and an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). The temperature sensing probe is divided into a sensing probe and a reference probe for accurate thermometry. A sensing probe is composed of a silicon oil, a FC terminator, a brass pipe, and a singlemode optical fiber and the structure of a reference probe is identical with that of the sensing probe excluding a silicon oil. In this study, we measured the modified optical powers of the light signals reflected from the temperature sensing probe placed inside of the water with a thermal variation from 5 to $70^{\circ}C$. Although the optical power of the reference probe was constant regardless of the temperature change, the optical power of the sensing probe decreased linearly as the temperature increased. As experimental results, the FOTS using a subtraction method showed a small difference (i.e., hysteresis) in its response due to heating and cooling. The reversibility and reproducibility of the FOTS were also evaluated.

  • As for the Production of internal combustion engines there has been further movement toward development of high Performance engines with improved fuel efficiency as well as a lightweight and a small size. These tendencies help to solve the problems in engines for example, such as thermal load. abnormal combustion and so on. In order to investigate these Problems, a thin film-type probe for measuring instantaneous temperature has been suggested. A method for manufacturing such a probe was established in this study The instantaneous surface temperature of a constant volume combustion chamber was measured by using this probe and the heat flux was obtained through Fourier analysis In order to thoroughly understand the characteristics of combustion. authors measured wall temperature of combustion chamber and calculated heat flux through a cylinder wall while varying the protrusion height of probe. For these Purposes, the instantaneous surface temperature probe was developed. thereby making possible the analysis of instantaneous temperature of wall surface and the detection of unsteady heat flux in the constant volume combustion chamber.

  • A triple hot-wire probe has an essential potentiality for the measure- ment of an instantaneous velocity vector in a three dimensional unsteady flow with large amplitude of velocity fluctuations, the key problems asso- ciated with this instrument are the directional range of applicability and the accuracy. This present paper is concerned with a new method of the techniques of calibration and data processing to estimate the three dimensional flow field using an arbitrary shaped triple hot-wire probe. The method is not based on the assumptions of orthogonality or symmetry and it is especially useful for applications to a hand-made probe where probe geometry is not accurately known. The test application is made to evaluate the effect of cone angles of symmetric non-orthogonal probe.

  • Scanning Thermal Microscope (STU) has been known for its superior resolution for local temperature and thermal property measurement. However, commercially available STU probe which is the key component of SThM does not provide resolution enough to explore nanoscale thermal phenomena. Here, we developed a SThM probe fabrication process that can achieve spatial resolution around 50 m. The batch-fabricated probe has a thermocouple junction located at the end of the tip. The size of the thermocouple junction is around 200 m and the distance of the junction from the very end of the tip is 150 m. The probe is currently being used for nanoscale thermal probing of nano-material and nano device.

  • Pressures of a five-hole probe were measured for a full range of yaw and pitch angles and complete pressure coefficient maps were obtained. Based on these maps, various features of five-hole probe pressures were revealed and new five-hole probe calibration coefficients were devised. The new calibration coefficients show non-diverging characteristics for any flow direction and one-to-one correspondence for a wide range of flow angles. These calibration coefficients expand the valid flow angle range of five-hole probe calibration by .+-.10 degrees and complement a critical defect of five-hole probe zone-division calibration method which has not been known yet. Moreover new non-diverging calibration coefficients have advantages in nulling methods, too.

  • In this study, we have developed a 3-dimensional diagnostic ultrasonic sector probe using a convex type ultrasonic probe with 128 active elements. The probe was made to operate at the center frequency of 4.5㎒ with the bandwidth of 66%. The driving part was designed to rotate the axis of the convex probe by means of a step motor equipped with reduction gears and spur gears attached to the motor so that the probe could enable us to acquire a series of 2-dimensional images to construct a 3-dimensional image. Acoustic cover of the probe was made of polymers to have the same radius of rotation as that of the convex probe. The controllability of the rotation angle and the structural stability of the probe were confirmed through experimental 3-dimensional images obtained using the developed 3-dimensional sector probe.

  • In the previous study, a study was conducted to improve the exhaust gas intake efficiency by improving the existing soot measurement probe in the shape and angle of the exhaust port. As a result, it can be seen that the smoke measurement performance according to the shape and angle is improved. In previous studies, the performance of the soot probe was not confirmed for the Korean KD 147 mode, which has a low suction flow rate and a long inspection time. So, we would like to confirm the improvement of the smoke probe performance of the Korean KD 147 mode, which is close to the actual driving conditions. The probe used in this study is another type of probe, and has a circular ring shape instead of a rib and variable center position unit, so the probe center hole is located close to the center of the exhaust pipe.

  • In this paper, we report the fabrication of the tip-on-gate of a field-effect-transistor (ToGoFET) probe using a standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process and the performance evaluation of the fabricated probe. After the CMOS process, I-V characteristic measurement was performed on the reference MOSFET. We confirmed that the ToGoFET probe could be operated at a gate voltage of 0 V due to channel ion implantation. The transconductance at the operating point (Vg = 0 V, Vd = 2 V) was 360 ㎂/V. After the fabrication process was completed, calibration was performed using a pure metal sample. For sensitivity calibration, the relationship between the input voltage of the sample and the output current of the probe was determined and the result was consistent with the measurement result of the reference MOSFET. An oxide sample measurement was performed as an example of an application of the new ToGoFET probe. According to the measurement, the ToGoFET probe could spatially resolve a hundred nanometers with a height of a few nanometers in both the topographic image and the ToGoFET image.

  • Total bacterial community DNA, which was extracted from microcosm soil and field soil after 2,4-D amendments, was analyzed on Southern blots, using the tfdA gene probe derived from plasmid pJP4 and the Spa probe from Sphingomonas paucimobilis. Southern blot analyses with total bacterial DNA extracted from soils Inoculated with Pseudomonas cepacia/pJP4 revealed that DNA probe method could detect the 2,4-D degrading bacteria down to $10^5\;cells/g$ dry soil. In the microcosm experiment, there was a good correlation between 2,4-D degradation and banding patterns in hybridization analyses performed after each 2,4-D treatment using the two probes. When bacterial DNA extracted from microcosm soil was hybridized with the Spa probe, a change in the position of hybrid bands was observed over time in a Southern blot, suggesting that population change or possibly genetic rearrangement in 2,4-D degrading microbial populations occurred in this soil. With the Spa probe, one hybrid DNA band was persistently observed throughout the five 2,4-D additions. When bacterial DNA isolated from the field soil was probed with the tfdA and Spa, strong hybridization signal was observed in the 100 ppm-treated subplot, weak signal In the 10 ppm-treated subplot, and no significant signal in the 1 ppm-treated and control subplots. The data show that DNA probe analyses were capable of detecting and discriminating the indigenous 2,4-D degrading microbial populations in soil amended with 2,4-D under laboratory and field conditions.
