An Improved Method of Character Network Analysis for Literary Criticism: A Case Study of

  • As a computational approach to literary criticism, the method of character network analysis has attracted attention. The character network is composed of nodes as characters and links as relationship between characters, and has been used to analyze literary works systematically. However, there were limitations in that relationships between characters were so superficial that they could not reflect intimate relationships and quantitative data from the network were not interpreted in depth regarding meaning of literary works. In this study, we propose an improved method of character network analysis through a case study on the play . First, we segmented the character network into a dialogue network focused on speaker-to-listener relationship and an opinion network focused on subject-to-object relationship. We analyzed these networks in various ways and discussed how analysis results could reflect structure and meaning of the work. Through these studies, we strived to find a way of organic and meaningful connection between literary criticism in humanities and network analysis in computer science.

Failed back surgery syndrome-terminology, etiology, prevention, evaluation, and management: a narrative review

  • Amid the worldwide increase in spinal surgery rates, a significant proportion of patients continue to experience refractory chronic pain, resulting in reduced quality of life and escalated healthcare demands. Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) is a clinical condition characterized by persistent or recurrent pain after one or more spinal surgeries. The diverse characteristics and stigmatizing descriptions of FBSS necessitate a reevaluation of its nomenclature to reflect its complexity more accurately. Accurate identification of the cause of FBSS is hampered by the complex nature of the syndrome and limitations of current diagnostic labels. Management requires a multidisciplinary approach that may include pharmacological treatment, physical therapy, psychological support, and interventional procedures, emphasizing realistic goal-setting and patient education. Further research is needed to increase our understanding, improve diagnostic accuracy, and develop more effective management strategies.

소설의 발생과 성적 계약 -국민국가 담론을 넘어 (The Rise of the Novel and the Sexual Contract: Beyond correspondence between novel and nation-state)

  • The studies of correspondence between novel and nation-state, among which The Rise of the Novel by Ian Watt is supposed to be the first book, have flourished for more than twenty years, encouraged by Benedict Anderson's and Cathy Davidson's works. According to them, the novel should come simultaneously with, or after the foundation of the nation-state, and testify to its production or the emergence of its subject/citizen. This paper questions about these prepositions, trying to introduce a new paradigmatical approach, "between global and transnational historical approach," to first novels in transatlantic areas including England and atlantic coastal areas. In its complex relation to a variety of colonial, post-colonial, and transnational geopolitics, various cultural practices such as history, traveler's tales and epistolary novels can be included in the genre of the novel. The idea of the sexual contract by Carole Pateman is very useful because it helps more clearly understand the nature of relation between men and women in the capitalist reproduction, while the social contract tells about the relation between men as citizens. Unlike Freud in Totem and Taboo, Zilboorg argues that there were primordial and violent scenes such as rape before the first sexual contract. This paper will illuminate that "the rise of the novel" corresponded with the emergence of the sexual contract. In the so-called first novel Pamela, the heroine Pamela was threatened to be violated by Mr. B., and was really even confined in his cottage. Mary Rowlandson's The Captive Narrative shows that her body was confined as an English female captive, and troubled with imaginary rape by Indians which resulted in the unequal sexual contract between her and her puritan community in America. However, Leonora Sansay's Secret History in an alternative communality, which was not a nation-state, was different from both novels mentioned above, in that it shows the possibility of emancipation from their unequal marriage, the sexual contract. Therefore, it can be argued that "between global and transnational historical approach" has a possibility to provide a new vision of global sisterhood and solidarity to recognize globalized women's violence, and free themselves from the unequal sexual contract.

  • Recent works in the area of multimedia studies focus on a wide range of issues from the impact of multimedia on culture to its impact on economics and anything in between. The interconnectedness of the issues raised by this new practice is complicated by the fact that media are rapidly converging: in a very real way, multimedia is becoming a media prism that reflects the way in which media continually influence each other across disciplines and cultural borders. Thus, the impact of multimedia reflects a complicated crossroads where media, human experience, culture and technology converge. An effective design is generally based on shaping aesthetics for function and utility, with an emphasis on ease of use. However, in designing for cyberspace, it is possible to create narratives that challenge the interactor by encoding in the design an instructional aspect that teaches new approaches and forms. Such a design offers an equally aesthetic experience for the interactor as they explore the meaning of the work. This design approach has been used constructively in many applications. The crucial concern is to determine how little or how much information must be presented for the interactor to achieve a suitable level of cognition. This is always a balancing act: too much difficulty will result in interactor frustration and the abandonment of the activity and too little will result in boredom leading to the same negative result In addition, it can be anticipated that the interactor will bring her or his own level of experiential cognition and/or accretion, to the experience providing reflective cognition and/or restructure the learning curve. If the design of the application is outside their present experience, interactors will begin with established knowledge in order to explore the new work. Thus, it may be argued that the interactor explores, learns and cognates simultaneously based on primary experiential cognition. Learning is one of the most important keys to establishing a comfort level in a new media work. Once interactors have learned a new convention, they apply this cognitive knowledge to other new media experiences they may have. Pierre Levy would describe this process as a "new nomadism" that creates "an invisible space of understanding, knowledge, and intellectual power, within which new qualities of being and new ways of fashioning a society will flourish and mutate" (Levy xxv 1997). Thus, navigation itself of offers the interactors the opportunity to both apply and loam new cognitive skills. This suggests that new media narrative strategies are still in the process of developing unique conventions and, as a result, have not reached a level of coherent grammar. This paper intends to explore the cognitive aspects of new media design and in particular, will explore issues related to the design of new media interfaces. The paper will focus on the creation of narrative strategies that engage interactors through loaming curves thus enhancing interactivity.vity.

  • Business process(workflow) analysis has been recognized as a core step to building information systems. However, most analysts have recognized that deriving consistent business process artifacts even in a simple business domain is very difficult, since most analysis methods give the designers narrative and/or diagrammatic tools that do not support rigorous analysis rules. This often generates inconsistent analysis results, leading to create useless information systems and resulting in tremendous budget wastes. To overcome this weakness, this paper presents a declarative business process modeling method called contract-collaboration net(cc-net), which is not only somewhat formal but also useful to the practitioners. A case study on bank domain is presented to illustrate our approach.

Effective and appropriate use of weight loss medication in pediatric obesity: a narrative review

  • Over the past few decades, there has been a notable increase in the incidence of pediatric obesity, which is a significant public health concern. Children who are obese have a greater risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, polycystic ovary syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, and adult obesity. Lifestyle modification therapy is typically the initial approach to treat pediatric obesity. For patients who do not achieve success with lifestyle modification therapy alone, pharmacotherapy is the next logical treatment option. When selecting an anti-obesity medication (AOM), it is essential to first ascertain the medical background of the patient, including current medications and obesity-associated comorbidities. Evaluation of obesity phenotypes in patients may also be beneficial. AOMs for pediatric obesity include metformin, orlistat, glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists, phentermine, and the phentermine/topiramate combination. Sufficient lifestyle modification therapy should be administered before considering pharmacotherapy and continued after the initiation of AOM. To ensure healthy development, monitoring growth and puberty development during anti-obesity treatments is essential.

창작 주체의 문화적 위치와 영화 서사와의 관계에 대한 일고찰 - 장뤼(張律)의 <춘몽>을 중심으로 - (Study on the Relationship between the Cultural Position of the Subject of Creation and Filmic Narrative - Focusing on A Quiet Dream by Zhang Lu -)

  • 이 글은 장뤼가 한국에 정착한 뒤 만든 영화 <춘몽>을 중심으로 영화 창작 주체의 사회 문화적 위치 변화가 텍스트에 어떠한 영향을 미치게 되는지를 고찰한 것이다. 이에 창작 주체를 둘러싼 컨텍스트적 요소들을 중점적으로 살펴봄으로써 그것들이 장뤼 영화 미학의 변화를 견인하는 양상과 이로 인해 영화 서사에 궁극적으로 어떠한 변화를 낳았는지에 대해 탐색하였다. 영화 <춘몽>에서 장뤼는 영화적 실험을 단행한다. 그는 영화라는 매체가 어떠한 형식을 운용하여 현실 세계와 관련한 담론을 구축하는지에 대한 미학적 실험을 하였다. 이에 영화 속의 현실과 꿈 사이의 경계를 모호하게 표현함으로써 영화적 현실과 실제 현실 사이, 나아가 인간과 사회를 향한 예술적 진실은 무엇인지에 대한 새로운 층위의 서사를 주조해냈다. 그런데 이와 같은 <춘몽>의 서사와 장뤼의 영화 작법의 변화는 일견 장뤼 자신과 자신의 영화에 대해 주로 이방인, 주변인 혹은 디아스포라라는 키워드들과 관련지어 논해온 행위들에 대한 저항으로 보이기도 한다. 장뤼는 한국에 정착한 뒤 얻은 문화적 신분 변화에 의해 영화라는 예술에 대해 보다 본질적, 다층적 차원에서 접근할 수 있었다. 따라서 장뤼는 그의 초기 영화 세계에서 벗어나 문화권과 문화권 사이, 예술적 진실과 예술적 규범 사이, 주류문화와 비주류문화 사이의 경계들을 무화시키는 작업을 벌일 수 있었고 이로 인해 영화가 어떻게 사회적 현실과 문화 제도로부터 탈주하여 의미 있는 담론들을 생성할 수 있는가에 대해 자유롭게 논할 수 있었다.

  • Current architecture can receive support of and command various ways of expression by more advanced technology of the present time, this means the formation of changeable external design of building, and has the tendency to be interactive non-rheological shape. Accordingly surface of building is decorated not only by the basic function and the expression of information, but also by complex narrative image structure or text, so far as recognizes human as the subject of communication, and is trying the artistic expression interacting with the general public. In various expressive tendency of current architecture surface design, such an approach from a view of an interactive art trying the communication between architecture, art, and human has the meaning of suggesting the direction of directing emotional architecture giving a present to the morderners who are growing more and more an earnest desire for experiencing culture and art in their daily life.

<그것이 알고 싶다>의 수사학적 특성에 관한 연구 (Study on the Rhetorical Characteristics of Current Issue Program SBS )

  • SBS <그것이 알고 싶다>는 시사 고발 프로그램들이 위축되는 2010년대에 공론 장을 지키는 역할을 수행했다. 이러한 성취에는 <그것이 알고 싶다>의 수사학적 특성이 자리하고 있을 것이라는 가정을 바탕으로 분석을 실시했다. 수사학이라는 특성을 바탕으로 <그것이 알고 싶다>를 일반적인 시사고발 프로그램으로 보기보다는 '미스터리성 고발 다큐멘터리'로 인식할 때 프로그램의 본질에 더 다가갈 수 있다고 보았다. 프로그램의 수사학적 성격과 제목, 부제목, 대본에 나타난 수사학적 특성을 분석한 결과 프로그램의 제목에는 철저하게 시청자가 보고 싶어 하는 욕망을 충족시키려는 관점이 반영되어 있었으며, 부제목들에는 미스터리라는 단어의 활용, 지명의 빈번한 사용, 의문문 형식의 문장 등의 특성을 발견할 수 있었다. 또한 대본에서는 반전의 수사학, 심층의 수사학, 감탄의 수사학을 사용하고 있다는 것을 발견했으며, 이와 같은 수사학적 특성으로 인해 시청자의 관심을 끌어 모으며 시청자와 왕성한 상호작용을 수행할 수 있다고 결론내릴 수 있다.

아네스 바르다의 <방랑자>와 형식적 실험 (Agnès Varda's Vagabond and Aesthetic)

  • 아네스 바르다는 자신만의 영화세계를 구축해 온 프랑스의 대표적인 여성 영화감독이다. 특히 주관성과 객관성을 혼합하는 실험적인 방식은 가장 돋보이는 특성이다. 이를 뒷받침하는 방식은 고전적 영화 방식과 상이한 영화적 형식에 대한 탐구에서 비롯한다. 이러한 접근은 현대영화의 형식을 치밀하게 분석하여 구조를 발견하는 노엘 버치의 방법론과 같다. 그래서 아네스 바르다의 대표작 중 하나이면서 1985년 베니스영화제에서 황금사자상을 수상한 바 있는 <방랑자>를 대상으로 주제와 형식의 유기적 결합을 통한 현대영화의 구조 산출이라는 형식미학적 분석하고자 한다. 인간 사이의 관계성과 접촉의 회복을 표류하는 삶의 비극적 죽음을 통해 전달하고자 한 영화의 주제는 영화의 형식적 실험을 통해 새로운 영화적 구조를 낳았다. 그 형식적 실험은 영화의 도입부의 보이스오버와 파편적이고 반복적인 구성으로서 인물과 상황 제시 방식, 서사적 양식과 비서사적 양식의 배합, 그리고 영화적 물리적 질료성을 폭로하는 방식으로서 카메라의 움직임과 편집, 그리고 플래쉬백과 사운드의 독특한 사용으로 이루어져있다.
