Background: Oral diseases are caused by various systemic and local factors, the most closely related being the biofilm. However, the challenges involved in removing an established biofilm necessitate professional care for its removal. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of professional self and professional biofilm care in healthy patients to prevent the development of periodontal diseases. Methods: Thirty-seven patients who visited the dental clinic between September 2018 and February 2019 were included in this study. Self-biofilm care was performed by routine tooth brushing and professional biofilm care was provided using the toothpick method (TPM) or the oral prophylaxis (OP) method using a rubber cup. Subgingival bacterial motility and halitosis (levels of hydrogen sulfide, $H_2S$; methyl mercaptan, $CH_3SH$; and di-methyl sulfide, $(CH_3)_2S$) were measured before, immediately after, and 5 hours after the preventive treatment in the three groups. Repeated measures analysis of variance test was performed to determine significant differences among the groups. Results: TPM was effective immediately after the prevention treatment, whereas OP was more effective after 5 hours (proximal surfaces, F=16.353, p<0.001; smooth surfaces, F=66.575, p<0.001). The three components responsible for halitosis were effectively reduced by professional biofilm care immediately after the preventive treatment; however, self-biofilm care was more effective after 5 hours ($H_2S$, F=3.564, p=0.011; $CH_3SH$, F=6.657, p<0.001; $(CH_3)_2S$, F=21.135, p<0.001). Conclusion: To prevent oral diseases, it is critical to monitor the biofilm. The dental hygienist should check the oral hygiene status and the ability of the patient to administer oral care. Professional biofilm care should be provided by assessing and treating each surface of the tooth. We hope to strengthen our professional in biofilm care through continuous clinical research.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the oral health behavior of oral prophylaxis clients and some residents in a community to their simplified oral environment index. Methods : The subjects in this study were 520 people who had their teeth cleaned in the oral prophylaxis practice lab in the department of dental hygiene at J health college. A survey was conducted from March 23 to June 3, 2010, by way of the self-reported questionnaire. The data materials are analyzed by general characteristics frequency and ratio, the relationship of oral health behavior and sex, age, scaling experience, simplified oral hygiene index $x^{2}$ test analysis. Results : 1. Concerning links between gender and oral health behavior including daily toothbrushing frequency, the largest group of the respondents brushed their teeth three times a day(p<0.05). As to educational experiences on toothbrushing method and the use of oral hygiene supplies, the women had more educational experiences than the men(p<0.05). 2. Regarding connections between age and oral health behavior involving daily toothbrushing frequency, the largest number of the respondents brushed their teeth three times a day in every age group (p <0.001). As for educational experiences on toothbrushing method, those who were in their 50s and up(64.7%) learned about that, and they had more educational experiences with age(p<0.05). As for scaling experiences, the older respondents had their teeth scaled more often (p<0.001). 3. As to relationship between scaling experiences and oral health behavior, there were differences in toothbrushing frequency according to scaling experiences(p <0.05). Regarding educational experiences on toothbrushing method, those who had their teeth cleaned received more toothbrushing education(p<0.001). Concerning smoking, the nonsmokers had more experiences to get their teeth cleaned (p<0.001). 4. As for links between simplified oral environment index and oral health behavior including a time for toothbrushing, the respondents who did toothbrushing after every meal(80.4%) had good simplified oral environment indexes(p<0.05). 5. In regard to relationship between simplified oral environment index and oral health behavior, oral environment index had a positive correlation to the use of oral hygiene supplies( r=0.129**), toothbrushing time(r=0.116**) and educational experiences on toothbrushing method (r=0.099**). Smoking(r=-0.092**) had a negative correlation to that. Conclusion : The above-mentioned findings illustrate that oral health behavior is one of crucial factors to affect oral health status and oral environment care. Therefore oral prophylaxis practice lab visitors should receive education on the right toothbrushing method and the use of oral hygiene supplies to promote their oral health, and an incremental oral health care system that involves regular scaling should be introduced.

Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical benefit of additional toothbrushing accompanying non-surgical periodontal treatment on oral and general health in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: We conducted a doubled-blind randomized controlled trial in 60 T2DM patients between June 2013 and June 2014. The patients were randomly assigned to the scaling and root planing (SRP) group; the scaling and root planing with additional toothbrushing (SRPAT) group, in which additional toothbrushing was performed by toothpick methods; or the control group. Microbiological and oral examinations were performed for up to 12 weeks following treatment. Non-surgical treatment was conducted in the experimental groups. The SRP group received scaling and root planing and the SRPAT group received additional toothbrushing with the Watanabe method once a week from the first visit through the fifth visit. The primary outcomes were changes in haemoglobin A1c (or glycated haemoglobin; HbA1c) levels, serum endotoxin levels, and interleukin-1 beta levels. Periodontal health status was measured by periodontal pocket depth, the calculus index, and bleeding on probing (BOP). Results: Both the SRP and SRPAT groups showed improvements in periodontal health and HbA1c, but the SRPAT group showed significantly less BOP than the SRP group. Furthermore, only the SRPAT group showed a statistically significant decrease in serum endotoxin levels. Conclusions: Non-surgical periodontal treatment was effective in improving HbA1c and serum endotoxin levels in T2DM patients. Furthermore, non-surgical treatment with additional tooth brushing had a more favourable effect on gingival bleeding management. Some investigators who have tried to achieve the highly smooth surface finish using electrochemical processes have reported that high current density produced lustrous surfaces while the opposite conditions produced a passive layer and had a tendency to produce a black surface. However, processing at a low current density may produce a non-lustrous surface but the improvement of dimensional accuracy of the surface is significant. The surface with pulse process was a bit more lustrous than with continuous current but the black passive layer still could be found at grooved surface. There are two ways to achieve highly smooth surface finish. One is brushing it with a brush the other is electrochemical machining (ECM) with high current. The former method is the most common polishing practice, but not only may the surface obtained differ from operator to operator, but precision smooth surface on micro grooves are difficult to obtain. The latter one recently has been used to produce a highly smooth surface after EDM process. However, the material removal rate in ECM with high current is relatively high. Hence the original shape of the micro grooves, which was formed by electrochemical micro-machining (EMM) process, may be destroyed. In this study, an electrochemical polishing process using pulse current is adopted as a possible alternative process when micro grooves formed by EMM process should be polished. Mirror-like micro grooves with lustrous and smooth surface can be produced electrochemically with pulse current because the voltage and current used can be lower than the case of continuous current. This study will discuss the accurate control of physical and electrical conditions so as to achieve mirror-like micro grooves with lustrous and smooth surface without destroying the original shape of micro grooves.
Statement of problem : A scientific examination and understanding of overall aspects of the natural dentition is the first step involved in making a satisfactory selection in the shade of an aesthetic prosthesis. Proper natural shade selection of the prosthetic restoration that is in harmony with the remaining dentition is as important aesthetically, as harmony of form and function in the anterior dentition. Clinically, the most commonly applied method of shade selection has been visual, but because of the subjective nature inherent to this method, shade selection results are variable and can be influenced by such factors as the technician, the type of shade guide used, and the type and intensity of the lighting. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to develop a more objective and scientific approach to examining and understanding the shade of teeth, which has in turn lead to the development of a number of shade analysis devices that present a more objective method of shade analysis. Material and Method : In this study, the shades of healthy anterior teeth were examined and analyzed using the recently developed digital shade analysis of the $ShadeScan^{TM}$ System. The study examined 80 individuals in their twenties, 40 males and 40 females, presenting 6 healthy, unrestored maxillary anterior teeth. Tooth brushing and oral prophylaxis were performed prior to evaluation. The ShadeScan handpiece was used to acquire images of the 6 maxillary anterior teeth. These images were analyzed using the Vita/Classical mode of the $ShadeScan^{TM}$ Software, and shade maps of each tooth were acquired and divided into cervical, middle, and incisal thirds. The shade distribution of each third, left and right symmetry, and gender differences were investigated and analyzed. Results : The results of the study are as follows : 1. An overwhelming majority of the examined teeth were found to possess shades belong to Group A, with the greatest variations occurring at the middle and cervical thirds of the maxillary central and lateral incisors, in both male and female subjects. 2. Canines of both male and female subjects showed left and right symmetry with uniform shade distribution of A4 and C4, while the lateral and central incisors showed left-right symmetry of the incisal 1/3 with a uniform shade distribution of A2 and A3 shades 3. No significant differences in shade distribution were seen between genders in maxillary canines, whereas maxillary central and lateral incisors showed differences at the middle and cervical thirds between male and female subjects The results of this study show that with the exception of maxillary canines, maxillary anterior teeth display a diverse shade distribution as well as gender differences. Conclusion : Clinically, when making a shade selection using the existing shade guide, one must consider the fact that even a single tooth consists of a variety of shades. The results of this study show that when selecting a shade from a number of groups is difficult, shades from A group are the most consistent with the natural shade or maxillary anterior teeth.
The drag reduction agency (DRA) for gas pipeline, a novel method used for reducing friction or drag on a gas flowing to increase the transmission efficiency of gas pipeline, is a more flexible and economical technology than internal flow efficient coatings. In this paper, an effective DRA has been developed in Authors' Institute by analyzing the hydrodynamic friction resistance on internal gas pipeline and then studying the work mechanism and molecular structure of DRA. In the meantime, a group of property test for selecting DRA material has been determined, including viscosity, contact angle, volatility, corrosion, slab extending, and flow behavior in horizontal tube. The inhibition efficiency and drag reduction efficiency of the developed DRA have been investigated finally based on the relevant test methods. Results of corrosion test show that the developed DRA has very good inhibition effect on mild steel by brushing a thin layer of DRA on steel specimens, giving inhibition efficiency of 91.2% and 73.1% in 3%NaCl solution and standard salt fog environment respectively. Results of drag-reducing test also show that the Colebrook formula could be used to calculate friction factors on internal pipes with DRA as the Reynolds number is in the range of $0.75\times10^5\sim2.0\times10^5$. By comparing with normal industrial pipes, the friction resistance coefficient of the steel pipe with DRA on internal wall decreases by 13% and the gas flux increases by 7.3% in testing condition with Reynolds number of $2.0\times10^5$.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to obtain the basic data for an industrial oral health project enhancing the quality of life and oral health. Methods : Questionnaire consisted of 17 questions including 7 questions of general characteristics, 5 questions of oral health awareness, and 5 questions of the behavior of oral health. A self-reported questionnaire was carried out from September 1 to September 28, 2012, The subjects were 400 male and female sanitation workers in private corporations in Jeonju. A total of 354 questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS windows ver. 12.0 (SPSS Inc. Korea). Results : The majority of the subjects were male in 50's. Temporary contract workers are older aged and 2 to 5 years of career workers were the majority of the cleaners. Average monthly income was less than 2 million Korean Won. Those who had a higher academic background and permanent position tended to have oral health knowledge (p<0.05). Female workers had healthier subjective oral health status than male workers. Those who were in older age, single, temporary position, and 2 to 5 years of career tended to have healthier subjective oral health status (p<0.05). Those who were in older age, married, and long period of employment were worrying about their health (p<0.05). The subjective oral health knowledge was high in 49.7% of the workers because they were not able to brush teeth during work hours. They were able to brush their teeth only after dinner. It was low in female and older aged workers (p<0.05). The brushing method included a combination of top to bottom and from the side to side. Conclusions : This study showed the influencing factor of oral health in street workers. Work environment, education, age, monthly income, and types of employment were the important factors to oral health care. It is necessary to provide the right oral health care program for the workers in the near future.
Purpose: This study was conducted to compare dental plaque scores obtained through clinical examinations and various imaging techniques, as well as to assess the effectiveness of herbal and conventional toothpastes for plaque removal. Materials and Methods: Thirty volunteers were divided into 3 groups. Each group was given a different toothpaste (from 2 herbal toothpastes and a conventional toothpaste) with which to brush their teeth for 21 days. Both initially and after brushing, dental plaque samples were collected, and plaque on the buccal surfaces of anterior teeth was scored using several imaging systems after staining with a disclosing agent. Specifically, digital dental photography, intraoral digital scanning, and FluoreCam imaging were employed to capture intraoral images. The Turesky Modified Quigley-Hein Plaque Index was used for clinical examination and image analysis. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses and correlational assessments between clinical examination and imaging scores were conducted before and after toothpaste use. The Shapiro-Wilk test and Pearson correlations were utilized. Results: The lowest mean value was observed in the clinical examination without staining, while the highest was obtained using the FluoreCam method. No significant change was found in the level of any microorganism assessed following toothpaste use (P<0.05), with the exception of a decrease in S. mutans levels after using conventional toothpaste (P<0.05). Conclusion: Herbal toothpaste demonstrated plaque-removal effectiveness comparable to that of conventional toothpaste. The use of imaging methods for measuring plaque index has been suggested as a means to educate patients about plaque control and promote ongoing oral care.
A questionnaire survey of patients for practical training of dental hygiene department of E college was conducted from August 28th 2006 to December 8th 2006. Before scaling, the purpose of the study and the questionnaires were fully explained and the patients were requested to complete the questions personally. The survey were conducted under their consent and 256 copies were collected and used for the analysis. The survey shows the patients' habit for oral health care according to the gender and age and their standards for the quality of life. 1. For gender, male occupied 117(45.7%) and female occupied 139(54.3%). For age, 158 of the patients were in their twenties(61.7%) and 60 of them were aged from 10 to 19(23,4%). 16 patients were aged from 40 to 49(6.3%) and 11 patients were aged from 30 to 39(4.3%) and the number of patients who are older than 50 was 11(4.3%). 2. For the mouth health care, according to gender, 37.6% of male answered that they had scaling and 46.8% of female patients answered that they had scaling experiences. Without distinction of gender, most patients answered they brushed their teeth twice a day. For 91.5% of male patients and 89.9% of female patients answered that they brushed their teeth after meals. Also, 41% of male patients and 53.2% of female patients use rolling method. For using mouth aids, 68.4% of male patients and 65.5% of female patients do not use any aids. 3. For brushing way, most teenagers and patients in their twenties use rolling method and patients older than thirty use vertical and horizontal method. The frequency of brushing shows that most of the respondents brush their teeth twice a day after meals. 4. The standard of quality of life according to gender, under 'clear pronunciation' head, male patients mark 4.42 points and female patients mark 4.17 points. Under 'every day going out' head, male patients mark 4.53 points and female patients mark 4.29 points. Under 'maintenance of emotion' male patients mark 4.27 points and female patients mark 4.27 points. 5. The standard of quality of life according to age, teenage patients show 4.28 points under 'having meals' and under 'clear pronunciation' head, patients in their forties mark 4.44 points. Under 'keeping teeth or denture clean' head, patients in their thirties mark 4.55 points. Patients in their fifties show the lowest grades in most questionnaires.
The purpose of this research was to find out their perception of the dental hygiene and level of its knowledge by estimating status of senior adults' dental health management. First, questionnaires were distributed to the 256 target senior adults aged more than 60, who were going to school for senior adults located in Ulju Country and the survey was conducted by interview directly. The results were as follows; 1. As for tooth brushing method, scrubbing method was used in male and rolling method was used in female and the survey results statistically revealed that rolling method was the most used in aged from 60 to 70(68.1%) and scrubbing method was the most used in aged more than 70(80.4%)[p < 0.001]. 2. As for reason of visiting dental clinic, female respondents accounting for the highest said they visited dental clinic when they feel a pain in the teeth and as for frequence of dental clinic, male respondents visited dental clinic for a once per a year. there was no difference statistically according to age(47.9%). 3. As for the perception of the necessity of dental prosthetic treatment, there was higher positive response in the female than male, in the lower aged groups than higher aged group[p<0.05]. 4. As for the question of whether to use of denture or not now, the survey results was statistically that the higher aged group and male groups were higher used dentures [p < 0.001]. 5. As for maintenance of denture, female respondents said the highest that they keep it in cold water after cleaning(95.5%), there was no difference statistically according to age and educational background [p < 0.001].
