Objectives : To develop measurement scales of Internet addiction, and propose a Korean Internet Addiction Index (K-IAI) and classification criteria for Internet addiction from the threshold scores developed. Methods : The identification of the concept of 'Internet addiction' was based on the literature review. To select the scales, an exploratory factor analysis was applied. A construct validation was tested by a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with a structured equation model (SEM). In testing the validity of the classification criteria, ANOVA and non-recursive models with SEM were applied. Results : Out of 1,080 questionnaires distributed, 1,037 were returned,; a response rate of 96%. The Cronbach-$\alpha$ of all items was over 0.75. Using an exploratory factor analysis in the condition of a 6 factor constrain as the study model proposed, 23 of the initial 28 items were identified. In testing the discriminant and convergent validity of the selected 23 scales using CFA with SEM, the Internet addiction model explained about 93% of all variances of the data collected, and all the latent variables significantly explained the designated scales. A K-IAI was proposed using the T-scores of the sum of all factor averages. In the classification of users, the basic concept was a twostandard deviation approach of the K-IAI as the criteria of MMPI. The addiction group had a score ${\geq}70$ in the K-IAI, the pre-addiction group between ${\geq}50$ and <70, and the average user group <50. The Internet use times of the classified groups were statistically different in the ANOVA and multiple comparisons. Conclusions : The K-IAI is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring Internet addiction. Moreover, the taxonomy of the groups was also verified using various methods.

We performed this study to examine lifestyle patterns and dietary behavior based on the level of Internet addiction of Korean adolescents. Data were collected from 853 Korean junior high school students. The level of Internet addiction was determined based on the Korean Internet addiction self-scale short form for youth, and students were classified as high-risk Internet users, potential-risk Internet users, and no risk Internet users. The associations between the students' levels of Internet addiction and lifestyle patterns and dietary behavior were analyzed using a chi-square test. Irregular bedtimes and the use of alcohol and tobacco were higher in high-risk Internet users than no risk Internet users. Moreover, in high-risk Internet users, irregular dietary behavior due to the loss of appetite, a high frequency of skipping meals, and snacking might cause imbalances in nutritional intake. Diet quality in high-risk Internet users was also worse than in potential-risk Internet users and no risk Internet users. We demonstrated in this study that high-risk Internet users have inappropriate dietary behavior and poor diet quality, which could result in stunted growth and development. Therefore, nutrition education targeting high-risk Internet users should be conducted to ensure proper growth and development.

A study was conducted to develop Internet Literacy Questionnaire(ILQ) to investigate the levels of user's knowledge on Internet literacy. ILQ was found to be reliable (showed an internal consistency) with Cronbach's alpha of 0.93(p-value<0.001) and valid with test-retest correlation of 0.90 (p-value<0.001). ILQ, composed of 21 questions, was developed to test four areas of user's Internet literacy: general experience on Internet, advanced experience on Internet, knowledge on Internet program languages, and Internet application software programs. These four factors represented 69.2% of the knowledge of all areas of Internet literacy. As a result, ILQ could be used to differentiate the levels of user's Internet knowledge as beginners, intermediates, and experts before any Internet application programs are to be developed.
Using data from the 2001 Computer and Internet Use Survey by the National Statistical Office, this study investigated digital divide among women aged between 20 and 55. Following were the major findings. first, two-thirds of women did not use Internet even though many of these had Internet access at home. Second, those who did not have Internet access at home, those with a lower level of educational attainment, those with blue color or service occupations, and those with higher age were less likely to use Internet than their counterparts in these socio-economic variables. Third, expanding Internet infrastructure would not improve Internet use of the Elderly. Forth, the majority of those who did not use Internet did not recognize the Internet itself. Based on the result the policy implications for digital divide were suggested.
Internet privacy is named as one of the major barriers to the expansion and further development of e-commerce. This study is to identify the antecedents to Internet privacy concerns, to investigate the relationship of the antecedents and the perceived trust and to validate Internet privacy's effect on the perceived trust. A conceptual model which identifies Internet literacy and perceived vulnerability as antecedents to Internet privacy concern is proposed and tested based on the sample of 276 Internet users. Empirical findings show that Internet literacy affect Internet privacy concern negatively while perceived vulnerability affect positively. Also perceived vulnerability's effect on and privacy concern's effect on perceived trust has both directional negative support. Implications and further research agenda are provided with the limitation of the study.
The study is designed to compare differences between male and female Internet users in present Internet use conditions, Internet addition, self-respect, and deviation from a health life and analyze and understand factors causing compulsive Internet use. The research is aimed at suggesting basic information to guide a desirable direction for healthy and effective Internet use. The survey of 456 students majoring in public health at some universities in the Pusan-Kyungnam areas was made in November, 2006. The results are as follows: As for general information on those surveyed the number of the males was 50(11.0%) and that of the females was 406(89.0%), which shows an absolute higher ratio of the female respondents. On a question of Internet use frequency 62% of the male students and 44.6% of the female students answered they use the Internet everyday. Also the male respondents' Internet use time was longer. 64.0% of the male students use the Internet for games and entertainment, which were the highest ranked reason. 64.4% of the female students said they use the Internet to check e-mails. To all the questions assessing Internet addiction, the male users' answers implied higher addiction levels, but there wasn't statistically significant difference. However, the statistically outstanding distinction between the two sexes on deviation from a health life is shown in smoking, cheating in a test, obscene video/books, and conflicts with parents. The most answered deviations among the male respondents are smoking, cheating in a test, and obscene video/books, while conflicting with parents is for the female students. On self-respect the survey has found statistical differences in five questionnaire items and the female showed higher levels in all those questions. The male students answered cheating in a test(0.399), conflicts with parents(0.391), and Internet use time(0.242) have significant plus(+) influences on their compulsive internet use, while alcohol(-0.308) has a minus(-) influence. The female students answered self-respect(0.114), alcohol(0.097), obscene video/book (0.218), conflicts with parents (0.243), and Internet use time (0.284) factors have plus(+) effects.
The study examines the play theory based internet rumor process by using simulating tools, Vensim, which offer a new theoretical basis from which to explore complex adaptive social system. Internet rumor is not a simple linear diffusion process, but a complex interaction behavior between the actors of production and diffusion. Rumor actors consist of two type of diffusion, which is rumor mongers and playful mongers. These two type of mongers make the internet rumor as collective system. Playful mongers play strategically to maximize playfulness. Internet rumor as play is consequence of collective framing constituted by dynamic interaction and playfulness. The networking space spreading internet rumor function as a playground which mobilize play rule, ignoring fact based framing. Rumor as paly, even though it turns out to be a false and loses the public attentions rumor sustains the game play function which makes the rumor without natural extinction. The study proves that playful mongers is a main actors in rumor play ground.
The overuse of Internet has caused the problem of 'Internet addiction' in the life of college students. The purpose of this study was to develop a program of time management education for preventing Internet addiction among college students. The program consists of sessions. The first session is an introduction to the program which includes a pre-test about Internet addiction. The second session is designed to allow them to check their pattern of Internet use and time use by themselves. The third session is designed to set their tie goals and make long-range plans. The fourth session is designed to make short-range plans and look for alternative activities. The final session is the completion of the program. This study has some significance in developing a time management program for Internet addiction. and will be utilized in practical education.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the degree of Internet addiction and factors influencing this addiction among high school students in Korea. Method: A total of 405 high school students in the Gyeoung-gi, Daegu and Gyeoung-buk areas were surveyed using questionnaires for data collection. Results: Internet addiction among high school students in Korea was relatively low. In the overall ratio distribution, however, the students who were classified as either addicted or at risk of addiction accounted for a high percentage of the students, 31.1%. Positive or negative relationships were found between internet addiction and the research variables but multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of Internet addiction was depression. Conclusion: Using the above results, it is necessary to develop Internet addiction prevention programs for adolescents. There should be a more comprehensive study in the future for an in-depth understanding of internet addiction of adolescents.
The growth of Internet usage even accelerated by the spread of high-speed Internet access network such as ADSI is affecting our socioeconomic activities and culture in a great way. Korea is recently reported to be the number one high-speed Internet network subscription per 100 people in the world. In a way to reflect this situation, we collect a moderate size of sample proportional to the population of each region across country and investigate what factors might explain the level of user's dissatisfaction with respect to Internet service they have been receiving. The results indicate that the set of gender, age, Internet usage, service kinds, incoming e-mails, and e-shopping is significantly influencing user's dissatisfaction, in that dissatisfaction is measured in 11 perspectives. In particular, user's age, gender, and e-shopping experiences are considered to be mostly explainable.
