  • Considering the rapid growth of elderly population and the increase of medical demand for aged, many of geriatric hospitals are needed in Korea. On the other hand, supplies of hospitals for acute care are considered to be excessive. So many of small and medium hospitals facing management problems have been converged to geriatric hospitals. These attempts are considered resonable for efficient utilization of health care resources in Korea. This paper aims to identify the concept of geriatric hospital and to analyze the problems and then to seek the alternatives for architectural planning on the basis of surveying the geriatric hospitals converged from hospitals for acute care.

  • The most recent study of the hospital design indicates that the researchers focus more on creating the healing environment within the hospital facility. Furthermore, it demonstrates the environment of individual living space for patients such as hospital wards becomes much more significant. This study seeks to analyze how various configurations and compositions of the resting space in the general hospital in Korea affect on patients in the aspect of healing environment and its treatment provided within the facility. The behavior of patients and their family members are analyzed thru the observation and the surveying process in order to find out the level of satisfaction and their demand for the healing environment in the resting space such as day-rooms, corridors and external garden. Finally, the purpose of this study is to create the principles of architectural composition for the healing environment in the hospital design.

  • Gross-to-net ratio is the important factor determining size of the building. However it was determined as the empirical method without the exact basis in the existing planning. This paper proposes more accurate methods for determining the gross-to-net ratio of architectural planning in general hospital. This paper analyzes the difference of gross-to-net ratio according to the various conditions and presents the elements of influencing on gross-to-net ratio. These elements is evaluated by applying in the typical hospital case. In conclusion, gross-to-net ratio is influenced by the accuracy of the space program, form type of the space and correspondence potential about the internal variation. In addition, This study has proved that empirical approach is a standard of minimum area.

  • Most of the existing studies of hospital ward were concentrated on the bed room and there was no study on the day place and corridor space for the inpatient. According to the existing study, 50% inpatients move here and there freely and they want to have a rest in the day place or corridor of the general hospital. So the purpose of this study is to find out the reason why the inpatients prefer to rest in the day place, to survey the inpatients' behavior there and to stress the importance of exterior environment except the bed room in the public space of hospital.

  • In this study, I investigate the critical evaluation elements at the architectural competition held nationwide in Germany. These evaluation elements, which can be regarded as the important design evaluation criteria, are selected by the design competition committee. Generally, in Germany the design competition committee consist of professors and famous architects who have theoretical and practical abilities with their own office. I classify and analyze the critical evaluation elements of seventy committee members, working on the selected nine prize-winners in Germany from 1997 to 2001. I conclude that the critical evaluation elements, ordered by frequency are : (1)circulation, (2)context, (3)function, (4)landscape & outside space, (5)organization of space, (6)arrangement of building, (7)form, arrangement of building, (7)form, (7)growth & change, (9)elevation design, (10)utilization of natural light. These design evaluation growth & change, (9)elevation design, (10)utilization of natural light. These design evaluation criteria for Hospital Architecture in Germany also can be applied to the evaluation methods of the korean Healthcare facility design.

  • The analysis of outdoor and indoor spatial composition with natural elements is required for the creation of healing environment in healthcare facility to provide basic data for the planning of hospital architecture. Literature review of healing environment and investigation on characteristics of spatial composition in architectural works and healthcare facilities have been conducted. The spatial composition of outdoor space for refuge and prospect from indoor space of Seoul National University Hospital have been analyzed. The result of this research can be summarized as followed. First of all, the main natural elements for healing environment are consisted with refuge in outdoor space and prospect from indoor space. The second one is that natural elements in Seoul National University Hospital are located in central, posterior, and lateral area of main hospital and connectivity, integration, and ERAM(3) which the characteristics of outdoor spatial composition with space syntax are focused on the museum of medicine and landscape area in the center of hospital. The third one is that the outdoor refuge and prospect from indoor space in Seoul National University Hospital can be replaced with cultural heritage like the site of Kyungmogungji and Changgyeonggung palace in and next to the hospital. In addition to the outdoor and indoor spatial composition, it is necessary to analyze the relationship between elements to develop the healing environment of hospital architecture.

  • The conventional corridor space was a functional space simply linking the rooms and facilitating the circulations in a hospital. Today, however, they are no longer the spaces for simple circulation. Now, they are changing into healing spaces. Healing space must have some spatial characteristics helpful to curing the patients, and therefore, such a space should be designed to encourage patients to have diverse experiences and behaviors in terms of psychological stability, rehabilitation and personal communication. With such basic conceptions in mind, this study was aimed at surveying and analyzing patients' behaviors of using the corridor spaces for general hospital wards. To this end, middle corridors and patio-type side corridors for general hospital wards in Korea were sampled. It was found through this study that various healing behaviors shown in the conventional middle corridors were witnessed in the patio-type side corridors. On the other hand, behavioral characteristics of each area were analyzed to determine the factors encouraging patients to be cured, and thereupon, some design points for the corridor spaces of general hospital wards were suggested to help their users quick recovering.

  • This study is about change a necessary and natural change from institutionalized hospital based health care to a more patient centered, accessible health care. Rapidly change of social and medical facts such as growing aging population, malady, changing of medical policy are made new paradigm. This paradigm is both required to the hospital ; consolidate department and service; architectural change. Benefit to patient and hospital are many, so there are many challenges in Korean general hospital. The purpose of this study is find architectural design guideline to Korean general hospital which is struggling to change from to functional organization to the patient based care center. As a result, the type is divided into three classes, consultation type(C), some of examinations are added on consultation type(EAC), consultation and examination are fully integrated type(CEI). Each type has different organization and the proportion of area, group unit, process of treatment.
