Cretaceous granitic rocks in the Waryongsan area occur as a stock and show compositional changes with altitude. They include mafic microgranular enclaves (MME) with various sizes and types. The MMEs present clear evidence of magma mingling such as supercooling zone, mantling texture and back veining. The granitic rocks are divided into porphyritic granite, porphyritic granodiorite and fined-grained granite by their petrographic characteristics and modal compositions. The MMEs are discriminated to quartzdioritie, quartzmonzodiorite and tonalite. They have varying areal proportions in each granitic rock-type: 10∼l5% in the porphyritic granite, about 50% in the porphyritic granodiorite, and about 20% in the fined-grained granite. SiO₂ contents shows compositional change of 61.2∼72.0wt.%. Mean SiO₂ contents have 61.7wt.% in the porphyritic granodiorite, 68.6wt.% in the porphyritic granite. and 71.9wt.% in the fined-grained granite, respectively. Major oxide contents of the granitic rocks linearly vary with SiO₂ contents from the porphyiritic granodiorite to the fine-grained granite on Harker diagrams. Linear compositional variations seem to have been caused by differential degrees of mingling between mafic magma and host granite. Where larger amount of mafic magma was injected into the host granitic magma, the two magmas reached to thermal equilibrium more quickly and eventually chemical mixing occurred to produce the composition of the porphyritic granodiorite. On the other hand. less amount of injected mafic magma would have been responsible for mechanical mixing to produce the compositions of the porphyritic granite and the fined-grained granite. Therefore, it is considered that the granitic rocks in the Waryongsan area experienced magmas mingling resulting from the injection of more mafic magma into differentiating granitic magma, and that the compositional changes of the granitic rocks were ascribed to the degree of mingling between the two magmas.
Petrochemical analyses of granitic rocks including trace element, REE and oxygen isotope were carried out to understand petrogenesis of plutonic rocks from the Chungju, Wolaksan and Jecheon granite batholiths, which might be related with tungsten-base metal-fluorite mineralization in the Hwanggangri metallogenic province. Different geochemical characteristics such as major and trace elements were found between Jurassic Daebo granitic rocks (Chungju, Jecheon, Wonju, and Boeun granitic rocks) and Cretaceous Bulgugsa granitic rocks (Wolaksan, Muamsa and Sokrisan granitic rocks). Cretaceous granitoids are characterized by high $SiO_2$and $K_2O$ contents and low $TiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, MgO and CaO contents. They also have relatively high contents of trace elements(Zn, V, Co, Cr, Sr, and Ba) in comparison with the Jurassic granitoids. (Eu)/($Eu^*$) and $(La/Lu)_{CN}$ ratios of Jurassic plutons vary from 0.78 to 1.13 and from 26.02 to 30.5, respectively, while the ratios of Cretaceous ones range from 0.22 to 0.28 and from 4.42 to 14.2, respectively. The REE patterns of the Cretaceous and Jurassic granitic rocks have quite different Eu anomalies: large negative Eu anomaly in the former, and mild or absent Eu anomaly in the latter. The large Eu negative of Cretaceous granitic rocks are interpreted as a differentiated product of fractional crystallization of granitic magma deduced by Rayleigh fractionation model(Tsusue et al., 1987). Oxygen isotopic compositions of quartz for Daebo and Bulgugsa granitic rocks range from 9.98 to 10.51‰ and from 8.26 to 9.56‰, respectively. The Daebo granitic rocks enriched in $^{18}0$ suggest that the magma be undergone different partial melting processes from the Bulgugsa ones. Of the Bulgugsa granitoids, Wolaksan and Sokrisan mass have different contents of trace elements and ${\delta}\;^{18}0$ values of the silicate minerals, which indicate that they are not from the identical source of magma. Many mineral deposits are distributed in and/or near the Wolaksan and Muamsa granitic rocks, but a few mineral deposits are found in and near the Chungju and Jecheon granite batholiths. It might be depend on geochemisty of the related igneous rocks which have low contents of Ba, Sr, Co, V, Cr, Ni, Zn and high contents of Nb and Y, and on lithology of country rocks such as cabonate and noncarbonate rocks.
REE, major and trace elements analyses of the Jurassic Daebo granite and Cretaceous Bulguksa granite were carried out to interpet their petrogenesis and relationships between petrogenesis and tectonics. Analytical results are summarized as follows. (1) $SiO_2$ content of the Bulguksa granite (aver. 74.6%) are significantly higher than those of the Daebo granite (aver. 68.1%). Major elements of $TiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, $P_2O_5$, CaO, MgO, Total FeO, and trace elements of Co, V and Sr are negatively correlated with $SiO_2$. Incompatible elements such as Ba, Sr, Y, Zr and HREE are contained differently in the Bulguksa granites distributed in between Okchon folded belt and Kyongsang sedimentary basin. (2) Trace element abundances show a good discrimination between two goups of granitic rocks. Ba, Sr and V are enriched in Daebo granites, while Zn and Cr are depleted in them. (3) Jurassic granites have quite different Eu anomalies and REE patterns from those of Cretaceous granites: Large negative Eu anomaly in the former and mild or absent Eu anomaly in the latter. The large Eu negative of Cretaceous granitic rocks are interpreted as a differentiated product of fractional crystallization of granitic magma from the upper mantle. Meanwhile, the Daebo plutonic rocks was resulted from the partial melting of subcrustal material or crustal contamination during ascending granitic magma from the mantle. Senario of igneous activities of Mesozoic age in South Korea was proposed based on Kula-Pacific ridge subduction model.
Volcanic rocks including rhyolitic tuff, rhyolite and welded tuff in the Bupyeong silver mine area form a topographic circular structure known as a resurgent caldera. Granitic rocks are emplaced inside and outside area of the circular structure. K-Ar dating and Nd-Sr isotope studies were carried out to invesitigate the origin and petrogenetic evolution of the rhyolitic and granitic magma in the Bupeong silver mine area. Whole rock K-Ar age ranges from 208 to 131 Ma for rhyolitic rocks. Radiometric ages for the granitic rocks are 167.6 Ma for pink feldspar biotite granite from inside granitic pluton of the circular volcanic body, 178.8 Ma for the Kimpo hornblende biotite granite and 111.8 Ma for the Songdo foliated granite from outside granitic plutons of the volcanic body. The radiometric age data indicates that the volcanic activities which are partly overlapped by granite plutonic activities in the Bupyeong mine area had recorded early Jurassic and early Cretaceous in age. Initial Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the rhyolitic rocks ($^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$=0.710~0.719 and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$=0.5115~0.5118) are similar to those of granitic rocks ($^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$=0.709~0.716 and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$=0.5115~0.5116) from inside granite stock. This means that similar source materials of felsic magma responsibles for the Bupyeong volcanic rocks and inside plutonic rocks. Based on the Nd and Sr isotopic compositions, rhyolitic and granitic magmas in the Bupyeong area originated from the partial melting of the old continental crust which has Nd model age ranging from 1500 to 2900 Ma. This is analogous to those of the other Jurassic granitoids in South Korea.
Sulfur isotope compositions have been determined for the granitic and related rocks from the Wolf River Batholith, Wisconsin in U.S.A. Sulfur content and isotope composition of granitic rocks of the Wolf River Ratholith range from 30 to 140 ppm and from 1.1 to 6.5 permil respectively, and are considered to be magmatic. Sulfur content and isotope composition of the Penokean plutonic rocks, surrounding country rocks, range from 31to 381 ppm and from -1.7 to 7.2 permil respectively. The positive correlation observed between sulfur and oxygen isotope data of granitic rocks and the Penokean plutonic rocks may be due to the assimilation of the Penokean plutonic rocks by a primary magma of deep-crustal origin, or to mixing at depth, of a primary magma with another magma having higher ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}^{34}S$.
We report adventages of employing MgO as a differentiation index for the Namwon granitic complex. It is shown to be much more sensitive than the usual Harker index. The complex can be divided into two groups on the basis of $TiO_2$/MgO ratio. The low $TiO_2$/MgO group consists of hornblende biotite tonalite-granodiorite, porphyritic hornblende biotite granodiorite (PHBGd) and part of biotite granite (loBG). PHBGd shows its own distinct variation in the low group. This group is characterized in most cases by the presence of hornblende, even if it occurs as a trace amount. The high $TiO_2$/MgO group consists of part of biotite granite (hiBG) and two mica granite. The major element differences between rock types are also apparent in biotite chemistry. These chemical data indicate that at least two distinct origins of magma are rquired for the complex. Two kinds of biotite granite revealed in this study show distinct geographic distribution, suggesting that a new geologic map should be made.
We report Rb-Sr whole rock, K-Ar and fission track mineral ages for the Chuncheon granite in the Precambrian Gyeonggi massif. The Rb-Sr whole rock define an age of $196{\pm}9$ Ma with an initial ratio of $0.7159{\pm}0.0006$, suggesting that the granitic magma might have been generated from crustal sources (S-type), or probably mixed mantle and crustal materials, and emplaced into the massif in the late Triassic or the early Jurassic. K-Ar mineral ages of hornblende, muscovite and biotite are ~210 Ma, ~180 Ma and 166-170 Ma respectively, and fission track zircon and apatite ages are 65-70 Ma, ~35 Ma respectively. These ages indicate that the granitic magma might have been emplaced at about 7 to 9 km from the paleosurface, and rapidly cooled down up to $300^{\circ}C$ until middle Jurassic (~170 Ma) with a rate of about $10^{\circ}C$/Ma, due to thermal difference between the magma and the wall rock. During middle Jurassic to late Cretaceous (about 170-70 Ma), the granite pluton is assumed to have uplifted to 4 to 6 km level under the paleosurface with a rate of 30 m/Ma and slowly cooled down with a rate of about $1^{\circ}C$/Ma owing to relatively slow denudation of the massif. In late Cretaceous to the present, the pluton might have more rapidly uplifted to the present level with a rate of 85 m/Ma and rapidly cooled down with a rate of about $3^{\circ}C$/Ma compared to those of middle Jurassic to late Cretaceous time because of extensive igneous activities accompanied by tectonism in the Gyeonggi massif.
The Bunam Stock ($29.5km^2$ area) is an outcrop of plutonic complex classified four facies: coarse-grained granite, quartz monzodiorite, granodiorite and fine-grained granite. Three facies except the last one exhibit very irregular boundaries with gradational compositional variations between both facies and show concentric zoning from the central quartz monzodiorite through granodiorite to outer coarse-grained granite. Mafic microgranular enclaves (MME) commonly occur in granodiorite. Some MMEs, have very fine-grained chilled margins and indentedly crenulate contacts, and display horizontally circular and vertically elongate shapes. Their shape and granularity indicate coeval flow and mingling of partly crystalline felsic and mafic magmas. MMEs exhibit dark fine-grained margins giving them a ellipsoidal form that has been attributed to undercooling of a mafic magma as blobs intruded into a felsic magma. The observed relations in the Bunam Stock identify that two endmembers are coarse-grained granite from a felsic magma and quartz monzodiorite from a mafic magma, and hybrid is granodiorite including MMEs. So they exhibit concentric zoning that lays the center on the mafic endmember due to magma mixing at the contacts of two magmas, when mafic magma injected into felsic magma. Thus the quartz monzodiorite may probably represent an ancient conduit of mafic magma transport through a granitic magma chamber. Mafic magma would rise through the conduit in which favorable conditions for magma mixing occurred. All these features suggest that they formed from mixing processes of calc-alkaline magma in the Bunam Stock.
Based on the petrologic and age data of the Cretaceous to early Tertiary granites in south Korea, we propose a new tectonic model reflecting their temporal and spatial variations. A number of petrographic and geochemical studies on the granites suggest that they originated from the magma formed by subduction of oceanic crust in continental margin and were emplaced in epizone. The MMEs with various shapes and sizes, which were produced due to the magma mixing caused by the injection of mafic magma from mantle during the crystallization of the granitic magma, are observed in the granites. The distributions of the MMEs and ages of the granites show a distinctive spatio-temporal distribution pattern. The distribution pattern can be explained by a multiple slab window model related to the ridge subduction of Izanagi-Pacific plates during the Late Cretaceous.
The Samyuri area of Jeoksang-myeon, Muju-gun at the Middle Yeongnam Massif consists of granitic gneiss, porphyroblastic gneiss and leucocratic gneiss, which correspond to Precambrian Wonnam Series. Here we discuss a geochemical implication of the data based on major element composition, trace element, rare earth element (REE), Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotope systematics of the boring cores in the granite gneiss area. The boring cores are granitic gneiss (including biotite gneiss) and amphibolite. The major and trace element compositions of granitic gneiss and amphibolite suggest that the protolith belongs to TTG (Tonalite-Trondhjemite-Granodiorite) and tholeiitic series, respectively. Chondrte-normalized REE patterns vary in LREE, HREE and Eu anomalies. The granitic gneiss and amphibolite have Sm-Nd whole rock age of $2,026{\pm}230(2{\sigma})$ Ma with an initial Nd isotopic ratio of $0.50979{\pm}0.00028(2{\sigma})$ (initial ${\epsilon}_{Nd}=-4.4$), which suggests that the source material was derived from old crustal material. Particularly, this initial ${\epsilon}$ Nd value belongs to the range of the geochemical evolution of Archean basement in North-China Craton, and also corresponds to the initial Nd isotope evolution line by Lee et al. (2005). In addition, chondrite-normalized REE pattern and initial Nd value of amphibolite are very similar to those of juvenile magma in crustal formation process.
