  • A numerical simulation method is developed to analyze the dynamic response of a cantilever switch, which is driven by electrostatic force and a basic component of electro-mechanical coupled system. First, point-charges model on conductor is proposed as a lumped parameter of electrical part. Then, this model is easily incorporated into a multi-body dynamics analysis algorithm, the generalized recursive dynamics formula previously developed by our research group. The resulting motion of a coupled overall system is formulated as a differential algebraic equation form including electrical and mechanical variables together. The equation is simultaneously solved in every time step. To implement this approach into the useful dynamics analysis tool, we used multibody dynamics software (RecurDyn) based on the generalized recursive formula using relative coordinate. The developed numerical simulation tool is evaluated by applying to many different driving condition and switch configuration. The final analysis model will be added to RecurDyn as a basic module for dynamics analysis of electro-mechanical coupled system.

  • Based on the Hartenberg-Denavit symbolic equation, which is one of equations for the kinematic analysis of three dimensional (3-D) linkage, a generalized kinematic motion equation is derived utilizing Euler angles and employing the coordinates transformation. The derived equation can feasibly be used for the motion analysis of any type of 3-D linkages as well as 2-D ones. In order to simulate the general motion of 3-D linkgages on digital computer, the generalized equation is programmed through the process of numerical analysis after converting the equation to the type of Newton-Raphson formula and denoting it in matrix form. The feasibility of theoretically derived equation is experimentally proved by comparing the results from the computer with those from experimental setup of three differrent but generally empolyed 3-D linkages.

  • Recently, mechanical systems such as a high-speed vehicles and railway trains moving on flexible beam structures have become a very important issue to consider. Using the general approach proposed in the first part of this paper, it is possible to predict motion of the constrained mechanical system and the elastic structure, with various kinds of foundation supporting conditions. Combined differential-algebraic equation of motion derived from both multibody dynamics theory and finite element method can be analyzed numerically using a generalized coordinate partitioning algorithm. To verify the validity of this approach, results from the simply supported elastic beam subjected to a moving load are compared with the exact solution from a reference. Finally, parametric study is conducted for a moving vehicle model on a simply supported 3-span bridge.

  • In recent years, mechanical systems such as high speed vehicles and railway trains moving on elastic beam structures have become a very important issue to consider. In this paper, a general approach, which can predict the dynamic behavior of a constrained mechanical system moving on a flexible beam structure, is proposed. Various supporting conditions for the foundation support are considered for the elastic beam structure. The elastic structure is assumed to be a non-uniform and linear Bernoulli-Euler beam with a proportional damping effect. Combined differential-algebraic equation of motion is derived using the multi-body dynamics theory and the finite element method. The proposed equations of motion can be solved numerically using the generalized coordinate partitioning method and predictor-corrector algorithm, which is an implicit multi-step integration method.

  • Thermophoretic particle deposition on a circular cylinder in a uniform laminar air flow was numerically investigated using a control volume method based on the generalized non-orthogonal coordinate system. Variation of air properties due to the change of temperature was taken into account. Effects of variable property on the distribution of heat transfer and deposition rates of particle were discussed. A new correlation of thermophoretic particle deposition on a circular cylinder was proposed in the present study.

  • We consider the estimation of the regression surface in generalized linear models based on tensor-product B-splines in a data-dependent way. Our approach is to use maximum likelihood method to estimate the regression function by a function from a space of tensor-product B-splines that have a finite number of knots and are linear in the tails. The knots are placed at selected order statistics of each coordinate of the sample data. The number of knots is determined by minimizing a variant of AIC. A numerical example is used to illustrate the performance of the tensor spline estimates.

Flow-Guider Applied to Controlling Current in a Bay (도류제에 의한 항만내 조류제어 연구)

  • This paper deals with a numerical study of flow-guider applied to controlling current in a bay. Two dimensional numerical model for tidal currents based on the depth averaged equation is developed and standard k-.epsilon. model is adopted to determine the turbulence diffusion. Equations are described in a generalized coordinate system to be implemented by non-staggered grid system and discretized by using finite volume method. Unsteady flow is simulated by fully implicit scheme. Hybrid scheme and central differencing are used to compute the convective terms and source terms, respectively. The tidal current in a rectangular bay is simulated and it gives satisfactory results. The realistic and distinct models of a large structure placed in bay are also exemplified with or without flow-guiders. The simulation results show that the flow-guider gives the residual tidal current in the bay by the different flux with respect to the direction of tidal current.

  • A numerical investigation has been performed to discuss the radiation-affected steady-laminar natural convection induced by a hot inner cylinder under a large temperature difference in the annuli filled with a gray gas. To examine the effects of thermal radiation on thermo-fluid dynamic behaviors in the eccentric geometry, the generalized body-fitted coordinate system is introduced while the finite volume method (FVM) is used for solving the radiative transport equation. After validating the numerical results for the case without radiation, the detailed radiation effect has been discussed. Based on the results of this study, when there exists a large temperature difference between two cylinders, the existence of radiatively participating medium is found to incur a distinct difference in fluid dynamic as well as thermal behavior.

Sliding Mode Control for Nonholonomic Dynamic Systems (비홀로노믹 동적 시스템을 위한 슬라이딩 모드 제어)

  • As nonholonomic dynamic systems have constraints imposed on motions that are not integrable, i.e., the constraints cannot be written as time derivatives of some functions of generalized coordinates, advanced techniques are needed for their control. In this paper, a sliding mode tracking control for nonholonomic dynamic systems is proposed. By introducing a general scheme of coordinate transformation, the state of nonholonomic systems is mapped into a bounded space and a robust controller for dynamic models of nonholonomic systems with input disturbances is designed using sliding mode control scheme. Simulation results of tacking control for a nonholonomic mobile robot with two actuated wheels are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

  • Numerical simulation on two-dimensional turbine cascade flow has been performed using compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The flow equations are written in a cartesian coordinate system, then mapped into a generalized body-fitted ones. All direction of viscous terms are incoporated and turbulent effects are modeled using the extended ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model. Equations are discretized using control volume SIMPLE algorithm on the nonstaggered grid sysetem. Applications are made at a VKI turbine cascade flow in atransonic wind-tunnel and compared to experimental data. Present numerical results are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results and simulate the compressible viscous flow characteristics inside the turbine blade passage.
