Hanok is designed based on understanding of the nature and responding to it. For this reason, Hanok is a nature-friendly residential space. There are many unique traits of Hanok and one of them is that it is built based on scientific principles. Hanok, without using modern technology and machines, utilizes effectively the natural environment and the climate, e.g., the sun and the wind. Hanok, based on Korea's geographical condition and climate characteristics, have produced a variety of residential houses. The principle of Hanok is not to challenge the nature but embrace and accept it. Furthermore, in Hanok is embedded Korea's traditional philosophy and ideas and it is not simply a simple residential space but also a place for meditation and spiritual training. As the time passes, there are more researches are being done to enhance health in addition to traditional role of protection and convenience. Accordingly, more efforts are being made to bring the nature into human life. Hanok, the traditional residential form of Korea, has environment-friendly architecture and characteristics that could promote human health and enhance our life. Therefore, the nature-oriented philosophy and environmental elements of Hanok should be more systematically studied to take advantage of its architectural advantages and create healthier modern residential culture.

  • Sensitivity has become more important in relation to design in the changing social environment and atmosphere. In the West, the concept of aesthetics has long been established but in the East, only in the seventeenth and eighteenth century China did the discussion begin. In Korea, where the first scholarly discussion on aesthetics began around 1929, more and more rigorous and theoretical discussions are emerging now. Korean beauty consists of the beauty of no-artfulness and the beauty of natural artfulness. Japanese beauty consists of the beauty of half-articulation and the beauty of articulation. While both Korea and Japan base their sense of beauty on nature, Korea emphasizes nature as it is while Japan values artful decorative elements. Especially in modern Korean fashion, the characteristic Korean aesthetics of un-artfulness appears in various expressive techniques such as the movement with natural gathering, the use of natural materials like cotton, the harmonization of black and white, and a simplified silhouette. In Japanese fashion, one can see techniques such as: the beauty of half-articulation expressed through the ambiguity of shapes, colors, and genders or simplicity and paucity using straight lines, the beauty of articulation expressed with bright flower prints and ornaments, accessories of Obi and feathers and the transformed silhouette.

  • Past research suggests that a landscape has a specific situational meaning that is comprized of physical, social, and functional dimensions. and that the meaning: influences person/landscape interactions. In this study. the effect of landscape meaning on three landscape assessment(scenic beauty assessment, picnic preference, living preference) was tested by manipulating landscape meaning in three ways: Korean-positive, Korean-neutral, American-positive The results showed that landscape ,meaning played an important role in determining cognitive interactions and affective experiences of landscapes. However, it should be notch that the beneficial effect of positive meaning on landscape experiences depended on people's tasks and levels of oflandscape beauty. The effect was larger for both picnic preference (than scenic beauty and living preference) and low-beauty landscape (than the high-beauty) . The results also showed that the beneficial effect of positive meaning depended on the relationship between talc nature of positive meaning and measurement context.

  • Men study the nature in two ways. Scientists and mathematicians inquire a branch of those two ways. Mathematical formulations are the tools and the expressions of their nature. Meanwhile, the other branch, the art, alms for different inquiry. Instead of formulating the nature, the artists create their masterpieces from their ultimate source, the Mother Nature. For thousands of years these two branches have grown together, influencing each others work. Some mathematicians find that formulation, are not enough to fully express the beauty of nature. It is believed that such a simple expression, formula, easily omits the careful details of nature. The nature is simply too chaotic to be shaped with a formula. Of those mathematicians, Mandelbrot, one of the first to realize this matter, introduced the world of fractal geometry. Fractals give new possibilities. It allows us not to limit ourselves to linear prospect, rather a whole new view of this chaotic beauty of the nature. A popular practice to understand fractals is in costume design. The artistic characteristic and organization mechanism is appalled to costumes. Meanwhile, another practice, rather aggressive, is using computer to create an image of fractals. This image is then used for motives to generate artistic expressions. Computer and paper ironing technique is used for fashion illustration in this research. The works were synthesized arid transformed from computer programs. To add more traditional painting touch to this work, Paper ironing technique was used. Since the of effect of this technique is so random, irregular, and unordered, it corresponds to fractal consideration. This thesis asserts an another prospect to fractal as a structural way of describing nature ailed fashion illustration, rather than restricting it to only mathematical theory.
