  • In order to develope transfer alignment algorithm which achieves accurate initial alignment of slave strapdown inertial navigation system(SDINS) of a missle using master SDINS of mobile launchers third-order suboptimal filter is constructed to estimate the transformation matrix between two SDINS coordinates. In Kalman Filter formulation, the measurement equation uses that of accelerometer when stationary, and is replaced by that of gyroscope when elevating the missle. This switching method is applied to increase the degree of observability and to remove the error generated by lever arm effect. Simulation results show that the azimuth transfer error is about 0.3 mrad, and confirm that this scheme has a potential for real application.

  • During the past three or four decades, the characteristics of turbulent flow have been studied extensively because of their scientific and academic importance. This research deals with the periodic flow oscillation without swirling flow in a 180 degree circular tube using hot wire anemometry, microphone and accelerometer. The frequency regions are observed through the structured oscillation from spectrum. This work carried out to measure the sound level for each Reynolds number, $6{\times}10^4$, $8{\times}10^4$ and $1{\times}10^5$ respectively at the test tube without swirl flow.

  • A tool holder system has been designed to measure cutting forces in diamond turning. This system includes a 3-component piezo-electric tranducer. In this research, tool holder system is modeled by considering the element dividing, material properties, and boundary conditions using MSC/PATRAN. Mode and frequency analysis of structure is simulated by MSC/NASTRAN, for the purpose of developing the effective design. In addition, tool holder system is verified by vibration test using accelerometer. This system will aid to the development of Fast Tool Servo.

  • In order to analyze linear motor driven feed system, preliminary studies have been conducted focusing on the performance evaluation of the system based on the various combination of control gain along with acceleration. Tentative simulation revealed that due to the complexity of control system reduced number of control condition is recommended. Actual machining process with conventional feed system using endmill tool was employed as a preliminary study. Several sensing methods including AE, acceleration sensors and tool dynamometer were used. Results revealed the consistency in AE and cutting resistance. There were inconsistent empirical results in accelerometer probably due to the insensitivity of the sensor signal with respect to the experimental system

  • Objectives: Slip and fall accidents in the workplace are one of the top causes of work related fatalities and injuries. Previous studies have indicated that fall risk was related to postural and dynamic stability. However, the usage of this theoretical relationship was limited by laboratory based measuring instruments. The current study proposed a new method for stability assessment by use of inertial measurement units (IMUs). Methods: Accelerations at different body parts were recorded by the IMUs. Postural and local dynamic stability was assessed from these measures and compared with that computed from the traditional method. Results: The results demonstrated: 1) significant differences between fall prone and healthy groups in IMU assessed dynamic stability; and 2) better power of discrimination with multi stability index assessed by IMUs. Conclusion: The findings can be utilized in the design of a portable screening or monitoring tool for fall risk assessment in various industrial settings.

  • In general, the braking system of high speed train has an important role for the safety of the train. To stop safely train at its pre-decided position, it is necessary to combine properly the various brakes. The prototype of Korean high speed train (KHST) has been designed, fabricated and tested by the domestic researchers. It has adopted a combined electrical brakes, such as rheostatic brake, regenerative brake and eddy current brake, and mechanical brakes composed of disc brake, wheel disc brake and tread brake. In this paper, the performances and control algorithms of braking system have been reviewed by the experimental method.

  • In this paper, a digital inclinometer to measure the angle and acceleration signals of subject laid on Roll was designed. The designed system consists of a tilt sensor, biaxial accelerometer, microcontroller and BlueTooth module. The designed digital inclinometer was easy to handle and easy to wear. To evaluate the performance of the system, we measured simultaneously the angle and acceleration signals from the 3 subjects on the Roll with two instruments which are ZEBRIS and our system. The measured signals were processed by statistical method and then the correlation coefficient of 0.93 was shown. From the results, the designed digital inclinometer is shown to be useful in assessment of body movement.

  • This paper deals with a novel autocalibration method of three-axis micromachined accelerometers applied to a new golf swing diagnosis equipment for golfers. This diagnosis equipment can help golfers monitor and anlalyze their swing posture and therefore modify their swing action to get better score and enjoy their lives through golf. The micromachined accelerometers to get information of the motion are the essential part of the putting club to measure the three-axis acceleration as accurately as possible. This paper presents an efficient autocalibration algorithm to find the offset and sensitivity of accelerometers by only using the static measurement data at six different positions. The experimetnal results on the developed putters show the validity of the proposed algorithm for the new smart putter.

  • The Global Positioning System(GPS) and the Strapdown Inertial Navigation System(SDINS) techniques have been widely utilized in many applications. However each system has its own weak point when used in a stand-alone mode. SDINS suffers from fast error accumulation dependent on an operating time while GPS has problem of cycle slips and just provides low update rate. The best solution is to integrate the GPS and SDINS system and its integration allows compensation for each shortcomings. This paper, first, is to define and derive error equations of integrated SDINS/GPS system before it will be applied on a real hardware system with gyro, accelerometer and GPS receiver. Second, the accuracy, availability and performance of this mechanization are verified on the simulation study.
