Prostate cancer (PCa) remains one of the most widespread and perplexing of all human malignancies. Assessment of gene expression is thought to have an important impact on cancer diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic decisions. In this context, we explored combined expression of PCa related target genes AMACR and PCA3 in 126 formalin fixed paraffin embedded prostate tissues (FFPE) from Moroccan patients, using quantitative real time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-qPCR). This quantification required data normalization accomplished using stably expressed reference genes (RGs). A panel of twelve RG was assessed, data being analyzed using GenEx V6 based on geNorm, NormFinder and statistical methods. Accordingly, the hnRNP A1 gene was identified and selected as the most stably expressed RG for reliable and accurate gene expression quantification in prostate tissues. The ratios of both PCA3 and AMACR gene expression relative to that of the hnRNP A1 gene were calculated and the performance of each target gene for PCa diagnosis was evaluated using receiver-operating characteristics. PCA3 and AMACR mRNA quantification based on RT-qPCR may prove useful in PCa diagnosis. Of particular interesting, combining PCA3 and AMACR quantification improved PCa prediction by increasing sensitivity with retention of good specificity.

In this paper the potential of the Principle Component Analysis(PCA) technique that can be used to detect leaks in water pipe network blocks was evaluated. For this purpose the PCA was conducted to evaluate the relevance of the calculated outliers of a PCA model utilizing the recorded pipe flows and the recorded pipe leak incidents of a case study water distribution system. The PCA technique was enhanced by applying the computational algorithms developed in this study. The algorithms were designed to extract a partial set of flow data from the original 24 hour flow data so that the variability of the flows in the determined partial data set are minimal. The relevance of the calculated outliers of a PCA model and the recorded pipe leak incidents was analyzed. The results showed that the effectiveness of detecting leaks may improve by applying the developed algorithm. However, the analysis suggested that further development on the algorithm is needed to enhance the applicability of the PCA in detecting leaks in real-world water pipe networks.

Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is an effective technique that is commonly used for detecting noise in collected data of an individual sensor. In addition, the detection accuracy can be significant improved by exploiting the correlation in the data of neighboring sensors of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Principal component analysis is the powerful technique to analyze the correlation in the multivariate data. In this paper, we propose a DWT-PCA combination scheme for noise detection (DWT-PCA-ND). Experimental results on a real dataset show a remarkably higher performance of DWT-PCA-ND comparing to conventional PCA scheme in detection of noise that is a popular anomaly in collected data of WSN.

Recent studies have uncovered attractive properties of para-coumaric acid (PCA) as a potential skin hywhitening agent. The purpose of the current study was to examine its UVB-shielding effects. Effects of PCA on the viability of HaCaT cells exposed to UVB were assessed in vitro in comparison with other aromatic amino acid metabolites that have similar UV absorption spectra. For in vivo test, PCA cream (1.5 %) and cream base were topically applied to the dorsal skin of SKH-1 hairless mice and the inflammatory responses due to UVB exposure were monitored by changes in skin color (erythema) and thickness (edema). The cream application-UVB exposure regimen was repeated every other day for a total of 12 sessions. When HaCaT cells were irradiated with UVB, there was a dose-dependent decline in cell viability. The cell viability decline due to UVB exposure (10 mJ $cm^{-2}$) was significantly prevented by 100 ${\mu}M$ PCA, cinnamic acid, urocanic acid, or indole acrylic acid by 39, 27, 39, or 31 %, respectively. Topical application of PCA cream onto the dorsal skin of hairless mice (10 ${\mu}g\;cm^{-2}$) attenuated the changes of color parameters, $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values, and thickness of the UVB (150 mJ $cm^{-2}$)-exposed skin by 59, 50, 58, and 53 %, respectively. The current study, together with the previous studies that demonstrated the antimelanogenic effects of PCA, suggested that PCA may prevent not only dyspigmentation but also inflammatory reactions in the UVB-exposed skin.

In this paper, we propose a new PCA-based LDA Mixture Algorithm(PLMA) for real-time face recognition system. This system greatly consists of the two parts: 1) face extraction part; 2) face recognition part. In the face extraction part we applied subtraction image, color filtering, eyes and mouth region detection, and normalization method, and in the face recognition part we used the method mixing PCA and LDA in extracted face candidate region images. The existing recognition system using only PCA showed low recognition rates, and it is hard in the recognition system using only LDA to apply LDA to the input images as it is when the number of image pixels ire small as compared with the training set. To overcome these shortcomings, we reduced dimension as we apply PCA to the normalized images, and apply LDA to the compressed images, therefore it is possible for us to do real-time recognition, and we are also capable of improving recognition rates. We have experimented using self-organized DAUface database to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperform PCA, LDA and ICA method within the framework of recognition accuracy.
Background: We investigated the effectiveness of pain management and the adverse events of intravenous (IV) patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) after orthopedic surgery. Methods: From September 2014 and August 2015, we performed a retrospective analysis of 77 patients who underwent orthopedic surgery of the shoulder or the elbow in our hospital. The composition of the intravenous PCA administered to the patients was as follows: 250 mg of dexketoprofen trametamol, 70 mg of oxycodone, and 0.6 mg of ramosetron, which were made up to 79 ml of normal saline. We evaluated and statistically analyzed the difference in the visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for pain at immediate postoperation, at 24 hours of PCA, at 72 hours of PCA, and after discontinuation of PCA and in the incidence of adverse events. Results: We found that VAS score decreased for 3 postoperative days and that with discontinuation of IV PCA a meaningful change in VAS score was no longer seen. Of the 77 patients, 22 presented with adverse events (28.6%). We terminated IV PCA temporarily in the 21 patients who presented with adverse events; we terminated analgesia permanently in one patient (1.2%). Consequently, 76 of 77 patients carried out IV PCA till the designated period. Conclusions: Intravenous PCA after orthopedic surgery of the shoulder or the elbow may be accompanied with adverse events. Careful assessment of the patient and treatment of the adverse outcomes are key to a successful maintenance of PCA and to a successful management of postoperative pain.
In this paper, we propose a new face detection method for real-time applications. It is based on the template-matching and appearance-based method. At first, we apply Min-max normalization with histogram equalization to the input image according to the variation of intensity. By applying the PCA transform to both the input image and template, PC components are obtained and they are applied to the LDA transform. Then, we estimate the distances between the input image and template, and we select one region which has the smallest distance. SVM is used for final decision whether the candidate face region is a real face or not. Since we detect a face region not the full region but within the $\pm$12 search window, our method shows a good speed and detection rate. Through the experiments with 6 category input videos, our algorithm shows the better performance than the existing methods that use only the PCA transform. and the PCA and LDA transform.
Postoperative pain following tonsillectomy remains a significant obstacle to speedy recovery and smooth convalescence. Inadequate analgesia causes poor oral intake and influences the length of hospital stay and ability to return to normal activity. Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) is a method of analgesia adminstration that consists of a computer driven pump with a button that the patient may press to adminster a small dose of analgesic drug. The aim of this study was to examine whether Intravenous Patient Controlled Analgesia (IV-PCA) can reduce postoperative pain after tonsillectomy. The 100 patients undergoing tonsillectomy with general anesthesia were divided into two groups. The PCA group patients (n=80) received a mixture of nalbuphine and ketorolac by Walkmed PCA infusor during first 48 postoperative hours. In control group (n=20), the patients received oral acetoaminophen (Tyrenol) regularly and tiaprofenic acid (Surgam) intramuscularly on a p.r.n basis. Analgesic efficacy was evaluated with visual linear analogue scale (VAS) and the adverse effects were evaluated with 4 point scale. The patients of PCA group had less pain than those of control group. The adverse effects in the PCA group were nausea and vomiting. This study suggests that IV-PCA may be safe and effective method of pain control after adult tonsillectomy and is better accepted than oral or intramuscular pain medications.
Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) has been widely used for postoperative pain relief. Meperidine is useful for PCA and has efficient analgesia, rapid onset, and low incidence of adverse effect. To compare the analgesic effect, total dose and hourly dose, side effect and neonatal status of breast feeding with meperidine via intravenous or epidural PCA for 48 hours after Cesarean Section, 40 parturient women undergoing elective Cesarean Section were randomly divided into two groups. Each respective group of 20 parturient women received meperidine via one of the intravenous PCA after general anesthesia with enflurane (IVPCA group) and the epidural PCA after general anesthesia with enflurane (IVPCA group) and the epidural PCA after epidural block with 2% lidocaine 20ml combined with general anesthesia with only $N_2O$ and $O_2$ (EpiPCA group) when they first complained of pain in recovery room. Following the administration of analgesic initial dose, parturient women of IVPCA group were allowed intravenous meperidine 10 mg every 8 minutes when they felt pain. The EpiPCA group received additional bolus dose of meperidine 2 mg and bupivacaine 0.7 mg were administered every 8 minutes as requested the patients with hourly continuous infusion of meperidine 4 mg and bupivacaine 1.4 mg. Data was collected during the 48 hours observation period including visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores, total meperidine dose, hourly dose during 48 hours and each time interval, incidence of adverse effect, satisfaction, and neonatal status with breast feeding. VAS pain scores of analgesic effect in EpiPCA group was significantly lower than in IVPCA group at 2 hours after the initial pain after Cesarean Section. Total dose and hourly dose of meperidine significantly reduced in EpiPCA group. Hourly dose of meperidine at each time interval significantly reduced during first 6 hours and from 12 hours to 24 hours in EpiPCA group. The side effects in IVPCA group were mainly sedation, nausea, and local irritation of skin. And EpiPCA group experienced numbness and itching. The degree of satisfaction of parturient women was 88.2 % in IVPCA group and 85.7 % in EpiPCA group. We did not observe any sedation, abnormal behavior, or seizure like activity in any neonates of breast feeding. From the above results we conclude that epidural PCA was more efficiently analgesic, less sedative, and consumptional, and safer for neonate than intravenous PCA, and could be an alternative method to intravenous PCA.
Pseudomonas sp. K82 cultured in p-hydroxybenzoate induces protocatechuate 4,5-dioxygenase (PCD 4,5) for p-hydroxybenzoate degradation. In this study, a 6.0-kbp EcoR1 fragment containing p-hydroxybenzoate degradation genes was cloned from the genome of Pseudomonas sp. K82. Sequence analysis identified four genes, namely, pcaD, pcaA, pcaB, and pcaC genes known to be involved in p-hydroxybenzoate degradation. Two putative 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenases and one putative oxidoreductase were closely located by the p-hydroxybenzoate degradation genes. The gene arrangement and sequences of these p-hydroxybenzoate degradation genes were similar to those of Comamonas testosteroni and Pseudomonas ochraceae. PcaAB (PCD4,5) was overexpressed in the expression vector pGEX-4T-3, purified using a GST column, and confirmed to have protocatechuate 4,5-dioxygenase activity. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of overexpressed PCD4,5 were identical with those of purified PCD4,5 from Pseudomonas sp. K82.
