  • Rare metal (Nb-Zr-REE) ore deposits are located in the Chungju area. Geotectonically, the rare metal ore deposits are situated in the transitional zone between Kyeonggi massif and Okcheon belt. The rare metal deposits are distributed in Kyemyeongsan Formation which consist of schist and alkaline igneous rocks. Alkali granite has suffered extensive post-magmatic metasomatism and hydrothermal processes. The ore contains mainly Ce-La, Ta-Nb, Y, Y-Nd, Nd-Th group minerals. More than 15 RE and REE minerals are found in the ore deposits. Allanite, one of the Ce-La rich REE minerals belonging to the epidote group, is the most common mineral in the studied area. The allanite- bearing rocks may be devided into seven types by features of occurrence and mineral associations; zircon type (ZT), allanite-vein type (AT), feldspar type (KT), fluorite type (FT), quartz-mica type (QT), iron-oxide type (MT), and amphibole type (HT). The allanite veins (AT) and zircon rich rocks (ZT) contain the highest total REE contents. Differences in REE abundance can be interpreted in terms of varying portions of magmatic hydrothermal fluid. Petrographical and chemical data are presented for allanites which were collected from different types. The allanites show wide variations in optical properties, due in part to differences in their chemical composition (depending on the types) and to the degree of crystallinity of the individual specimens. Allanite metamicts in biotite are generally surrounded by well developed pleochroic haloes. Usually, allanite is accompanied by zircon and other REE-bearing minerals. CaO and total REE contents $({\sum}RE_2O_3)$ range from 9.29 to 18.79% and 11.66 to 26.31%, respectively. Also, SiO, (28.87~32.61%), $Al_2O_3$ (8.30~16.88%), and $Fc_2O_3$ (16.74~24.38%) contents show varying contents from type to type. The ${\sum}RE_2O_3$ of allanite has positive relationships with $Fe_2O_3$ and negative relaton with CaO, $SiO_2$, and $Al_2O_3$ Backscattered electron microscope images (BEl) of allanite shows that the its mineral composition and texture is very complex. The allanite-bearing hosts show distinct light REE enrichment with strong negative Eu anomaly except for HI. The HT has an almost flat REE distribution pattern with a small negative Eu anomaly. The chemical variation of the allanites with occurrences and mineral association can be related to condition of temperature and oxidation states in precipitation environment.

  • (Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3(BNT) piezoelectric ceramics are one of the promising materials that can replace Pb(Zr, Ti)O3(PZT) piezoelectric ceramics due to the high electromechanical strain properties. However, it is still difficult to use practical applications because the required electric field for inducing electromechanical strain is relatively higher than that of PZT ceramics. To overcome this problem, it has been intensively studied on doping impurity or modifying other ABO3 for BNT-based piezoelectric ceramics. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of La2O3 doping on the phase transition behavior and electromechanical strain properties in BNT-SrTiO3 (BNT-ST) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics. In the case of the temperature-dependent dielectric properties, it was confirmed that a phase transition from ferroelectrics to relaxors is induced with increasing La2O3 content. As a result, the electromechanical strain properties of BNT-ST ceramics were improved. The highest Smax/Emax value corresponding to 300 pm/V was obtained at 2 mol% La2O3-dopped BNT-ST ceramics. Accordingly, this study successfully demonstrated that La2O3 doping is effective on the inducing phase transition from ferroelectrics to relaxors and the improving electromechanical strain properties of BNT-ST lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

  • To increase the mechanical property of zirconia, we have investigated the phase change and the resulting hardness of zirconia ceramics by hydroxyapatite (HA) powder bed sintering. It was observed using X-ray diffraction that the cubic zirconia phase, which has a higher hardness value than that of the tetragonal phase, was obtained at the surface of 3 mol% $Y_2O_3$ doped tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) ceramics during the sintering process; in our experimental conditions, the phase change at the surface increased as the sintering time increased. We believe that the observed crystalline phase change originated from the decomposition of HA and the diffusion of CaO, as follows. CaO, which was derived from the decomposition of HA at high temperature ($1400^{\circ}C$), diffused into the surface of 3Y-TZP and acted as a stabilizer. As a result, the Vickers hardness value of the treated specimens was higher than that of the non-treated specimen due to the formation of the cubic phase on the surface of 3Y-TZP.

  • The Jurassic Kwanaksan stock, so far known to be composed of biotite granite only, has the mineral assemblage of quartz+K-feldspar+plagioclase+biotite${\pm}$gernet. The lithology of the stock is classified as alkali feldspar granite by their mode and plagioclase compositions (An<5). Subsolvus feldspars, rather early crystallization of biotite, and shallow emplacement depth estimated from Q-Ab-Or diagram suggest hydrous nature of the magma, which contrasts with anhydrous A-type like geochemistry described below. Major and trace element compositions of the Kwanaksan stock are distinct from those of the adjacent Seoul batholith, suggesting a genetic difference between the two, The Kwanaksan stock shows geochemical characteristics similar to A-type granite in contrast to most other Mesozoic granites in Korea, in that it has high $SiO_2$(73~78wt%), $Na_2O+K_2O$, Ga(27~47 ppm). Nb(22~40 ppm), Y(48~95 ppm), Fe/Mg and Ga/Al, and low CaO(<0.51 wt%). Ba (8~75 ppm) and Sr(2~23 ppm). However, it has lower Zr and LREE and higher Rb(384~796 ppm) than typical A-type granite. LREE-depleted rare earth element pattern with strong negative Eu anomaly of previous studies is reinterpreted as representing source magma characteristics. The residual material during partial melting is not compatible with pyroxenes, amphibole or garnet, while significant amount of plagioclase is required. Similarity of geochemistry of the Kwanaksan stock to A-type granite suggests the origin of the stock has a chose relationship with that of A-type granite. These observations lead us to propose that the Kwanaksan stock was formed by partial melting of felsic source rock.

  • A sequential design of experiments was used to optimize MOF-801 synthesis process. For the initial screening, a general 2k factorial design was selected followed by the central composition design, one of the response surface methods. A 23 factorial design based on the molar ratio of fumaric acid, dimethylformamide (DMF), and formic acid was performed to select the more suitable response variable for the design of experimental method among the crystallinity and BET specific surface area of MOF-801. After performing 8 synthesis experiments designed by MINITAB 19 software, the characteristic analysis was performed using XRD analysis and nitrogen adsorption method. The crystallinity with R2 = 0.999 was found to be more suitable for the experimental method than that of BET specific surface area. Based on analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was confirmed that the molar ratio of fumaric acid and formic acid was a major factor in determining the crystallinity of MOF-801. Through the response optimization and contour plot of two factors, the optimal molar ratio of ZrOCl2·8H2O : fumaric acid : DMF : formic acid was 1 : 1 : 39 : 35. In order to optimize the synthesis process, the central composition design on synthesis time and temperature was performed under the identical molar ratio of precursors. The results derived through the designed 9 synthesis experiments were calculated using the quadratic model equation. Thus, the maximum crystallinity of MOF-801 predicted under the synthesis time and temperature of 7.8 h and 123 ℃, respectively.

The sintered 0.05PSS+0.11PT+0.84PZ+0.4wt%$MnO_2$ system doped with $La_2O_3$showed sintering density of the range of 7.683 g/㎤ of 0 mole% doping to 7.815 g/㎤ of 0 mole% doping. The average grain sizes in the range of 0 to 5 mole% $La_2O_3$were decreased from 9.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 1.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$. X-ray diffraction investigation of sintered bodies showed that solid solutions were formed between 0.05PSS+0.11PT+0.84PZ+0.4wt%$MnO_2$ system and $La_2O_3$ in the range of 0 to 1 mole% but second phases were formed in case of 3, 5 mole%. Dielectric constants at 1 kHz were increased with 0 to 3 mlole% $La_2O_3$ before and after poling at the condition of 5 $KV_{DC}$/mm at $120^{\circ}C$ or $140^{\circ}C$ during 20 minutes. All Dielectric losses at 1 kHz were less than 1%, Curie temperatures were $208^{\circ}C$, $183^{\circ}C$, $152^{\circ}C$ and $127^{\circ}C$ at 0, 0.5, 1, 3 mole% $La_2O_3$ respectively. The values of $K_p$ were increased from 0 to 3 mole% $La_2O_3$ after poling at condition of 5 $KV_{DC}$mm at the condition of $120^{\circ}C$ or $140^{\circ}C$. The case of 0.7 mole% $La_2O_3$doped 0.05PSS+0.11PT+0.84PZ+0.4wt%$MnO_2$ system showed $K_p$ of 14.5% by poling at $140^{\circ}C$ during 20 minutes.

  • The combination of nanoparticle with radioisotope could give the in vivo information with high sensitivity and specificity. However, radioisotope labeling of nanoparticle is very difficult and radioisotopes have different physicochemical properties, so the radioisotope selection of nanoparticle should be carefully considered. $^{18}F$ was first option to be considered for labeling of nanoparticle. For the labeling of $^{18}F$ with nanoparticle, Prosthetic group is widely used. Iodine, another radioactive halogen, is often used. Since radioiodine isotopes are various, they can be used for different imaging technique or therapy in the same labeling procedures. $^{99m}Tc$ can easily be obtained as pertechnatate ($^{99m}{TcO_4}^-$) by commercial generator. Ionic $^{68}Ga$ (III) in dilute HCl solution is also obtained by generator system, but $^{68}Ga$ can be substituted for $^{67}Ga$ because of the short half-life (67.8 min). $^{64}Cu$ emits not only positron but also ${\beta}-particle$. Therefore $^{64}Cu$ can be used for imaging and therapy at the same time. These radioactive metals can be labeled with nanoparticle using the bifunctional chelator. $^{89}Zr$ has longer half-life (78.4 h) and is used for the longer imaging time. Unlike different metals, $^{89}Zr$ should use the other chelate such as DFO, 3,4,3-(LI-1,2-HOPO) or DFOB.

  • We investigated the structural and electrical properties of the Ba ($Zr_{x}$ $T_{il-x}$ )$O_3$ (BZT thin films with a mole fraction of x=0.2 and thickness 150 nm for the application in MLCC (Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor). BZT films were prepared on $Pt/SiO_2$/Si substrate at various substrate temperatures by the RF-magnetron sputtering system. When the substrate temperature was above $500^{\circ}C$, we could obtain multi-crystalline BZT films oriented at (110), (111), and (200) directions. The crystallization of the film and high dielectric constant were observed with the increase of substrate temperature. Capacitance of the film deposited at high temperature is more sensitive to the applied voltage than that of the film deposited at low temperature. This paper reports surface morphology, dielectric constant, dissipation factor, and C-V characteristics for BZT films deposited at three different temperatures. The BZT film deposited at 40$0^{\circ}C$ shows stable electrical properties but a little small dielectric constant for MLCC application.

  • The effect of substrate rotation speed on the phase forming behavior and microstructural variation of 8 wt% yttria ($Y_2O_3$) stabilized $ZrO_2$ (8YSZ) coatings as a thermal barrier coating has been investigated. 8YSZ coatings with $100{\sim}200{\mu}m$ thickness were deposited by electron beam-physical vapor deposition onto a super alloy (Ni-Cr-Co-Al) substrate with a bond coating (NiCo-CrAlY). The width of the columnar grains of the 8YSZ coatings increased with increasing substrate rotation speed from 1 to 30 rpm at a substrate temperature range of $900{\sim}950^{\circ}C$. In spite of the different growth behaviors of coatings with different substrate rotation speeds, the phases of each coating were not changed remarkably. Even after post heat treatments with various conditions of the coated specimens fabricated at 20 rpm, only a change of color was noticeable, without any remarkable change in the phase or microstructure.

  • The Engineering ceramics have some excellent properties as materials for modern mechanical and electrical components. It is, however, not easy to polish them efficiently because they are strong and hard. This study is carried out to obtain a mirror surface on engineering ceramics by surperfinishing with high efficiency. To achieve this, we conducted a series of polishing experiments using representative engineering ceramics, such as $Al_2O_3$, SiC, $Si_3N_4$ and $ZrO_2$, using diamond abrasive film from the perspective of oscillations peed, the rotational speed of the workpiece, contact roller hardness, contact pressure and feed rate. Furthermore, the polishing efficiency and characteristics for engineering ceramics are discussed on the basis of optimal polishing time and surface roughness. Our results confirmed that efficient superfinishing conditions and polishing characteristics of engineering ceramics can be determined.
