Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is one of the most effective methods for enhancing the machinability of difficult-to-cut materials, such as titanium alloys and various ceramics, and has been studied by many researchers. LAM is a method that facilitates machining by softening a workpiece using a laser heat source. The advantages of the LAM process are decreases in tool wear, cutting force, and surface roughness. However, when the material is over-heated, melting or burning can occur. This study analyzed the heat source distribution with regard to overlapping of preheating on the laser heating path with an acute angle, a right angle and obtuse angles. Then, a power reduction method was proposed to reduce the melting and burning of the workpiece.

(Sm/Y)-Ba-Cu-O system high Tc composite superconductors with/without $CeO_2$ additive were directionally grown by zone-melting process, haying large temperature gradient, In air atmosphere. Cylindrical green rods of $({Sm/y})_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_x$ [(Sm/Y)1.8] composite oxides by cold isostatic pressing(CIP) method using rubber mold were fabricated. The microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. The size of nonsuperconducting $({Sm/y})_2BaCuO_5$ inclusions of the melt-textured (Sm/Y)1.8 sample with CeO$_2$ additive were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the superconducting (Sm/Y)1.8 matrix. Both samples, with/without $CeO_2$ additive, showed an onset Tc $\geq$ 90 K and sharp superconducting transition. The critical current density Jc value of the $CeO_2$ addictive were $1{\times}10^5A/\textrm{cm}^2$ in 77 K, 0 Tesla.
We have developed nucleation control methods applicable to a zone-melting recrystallization excimer laser annealing process for poly-Si films. Ribbon-shaped Si grains of 2 ${\mu}m$-width were successfully aligned side by side by means of a comb-shaped beam, and we have successfully fabricated TFTs with channels formed in those grains. Electron mobility in the TFTs is as high as 677-$cm^2$/Vs.
The solar energy is dramatically increasing as the alternative energy source and the silicon(Si) solar cell are used the most. In this study, the improved process and equipment for the metallurgical refinement of multicrystalline Si were evaluated for the inexpensive solar cell. The planar plane and columnar dendrite aheadof the liquid-solid interface position caused the superior segregation of impurities from the Si. The solidification rate and thermal gradient determined the shape of dendrite in solidified Si matrix solidified by the directional solidification(DS) method. To simulate this equipment, the commercial software, PROCAST, was used to solve the solidification rate and thermal gradient. Si was vertically solidified by the DS system with Stober process and up-graded metallurgical grade or metallurgical grade Si was used as the feedstock. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP) was used to measure the concentration of impurities in the refined Si ingot. According to the result of ICP and simulation, the high thermal gradient between the two phases wasable to increase the solidification rate under the identical level of refinement. Also, the separating heating zone equipped with the melting and solidification zone was effective to maintain the high thermal gradient during the solidification.
Laser zone texture technology is widely used to enhance the tribological performance of high areal density media. This work investigates the transient process of melting and microscale surface deformation upon pulsed laser heating of Ni-P hard disk substrates by PLIC(Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation) method. The present results are compared with both the experimental and the Donor-Acceptor method results. It is found that the results from PLIC method are better than those of Donor-Acceptor method and they are in good agreements with the experimental results.

High $T_c(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y[(YNS)-123]$ superconductors with/without $CeO_2$ additive were systematically investigated by the zone melt growth process in air. Cylindrical green rods of (YNS)-123 oxides were fabricated by cold isostatic pressing (CIP) method using rubber mould. A sample prepared by this method showed well-textured microstructure, and $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})_2BaCuO_5[(YNS)211]$ nonsuperconducting inclusions were uniformly dispersed in large $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y$[(YNS)123] superconducting matrix. In this study, optimum melting temperature and growth rate were $1100^{\circ}C$ and 3 mm/hr, respectively. The directionally melt-textured (YNS)-123 sample with $CeO_2$ additive showed an onset critical temperature $(T_c)\;T_c{\geq}93K$ and sharp superconducting transition.

High power lasers provide a controllable and precise energy source in surface transformation hardening. A careful control of the process is needed in order that the surface layer of the material reaches the austenizing temperature, but that it does not melt. In order to achieve this the results of theoretical and experimental studies on the laser surface hardening of a medium carbon steel are described. A two-dimensional computer program, which can be used generally for the determination of transient temperature distributions in welding and heat treatment, was established on the basis of the finite element method. For the confirmation of the accuracy of the numerical analysis, a medium carbon steel (SM 45C) of 5mm thickness was heat-treated with a 1kW CW CO$_{2}$ laser machine, while the traverse speed and the distance from the focal point (defocused distance) were varied. Experimental and numerical results showed a similar tendency in correlations between the hardened zone shape and the process parameters. With increasing beam spot diameter the width and depth of the hardened zone increased for relatively small beam spot diameters, but decreased rapidly after reaching the maximum value, while with increasing traverse speed the width and depth of the hardened zone decreased monotonously. Too small beam spot diameters are to be avoided, since the surface melting would lower the surface hardness and produce an uneven surface which may be unacceptable because of the possible requirement for subsequent machining. It could be observed that for a given traverse speed and laser power input there exists a optimal range of the beam spot diameter, which produce a large width of the hardened zone but no melting on the surface.
This paper describes the concept and the characteristics of hyper interfacial bonding developed as a new concept joining process for UFG (ultra-fine grained) steel. Hyper interfacial bonding process is characterized by instantaneous surface melting bonding which involves a series of steps, namely, surface heating by high frequency induction, the rapid removing of heating coil and joining by pressing specimens. UFG steels used in this study have the average grain size of 1.25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The surface of specimen can be rapidly heated up and melted within 0.2s. Temperature gradient near heated surface is relatively steep, and peak temperature drastically fell down to about 1100K at the depth of 2~3mm away from the heated surface of specimen. Bainite is observed near bond interface, and also M-A (martensite-austenite) islands are observed in HAZ. Grain size increases with increasing heating power, however, the grain size in bonded zone can be restrained under 11 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Hardened zone is limited to near bond interface, and the maximum hardness is Hv350~Hv390.

The spinel $MgO.Al_20_3$ single crystals were grown by FZ (floating zone) method. Its melting point is about, $2135^{\circ}C$ and is important to the process of the growth from the melt. There have been some reports of the growth by Czochralski and Verneuil method. However, this study is the first trial to the spinel crystal with the application of FZ method. In this study, $MgAl_2O_4$ spinel crystals were grown by using FZ method which uses the ellipsoidal mirror furnace having infrared halogen lamps as a heat source. With dopants of transition metal ions, it was possible to melt the feed rod which does not absorb the infrared rays due to the transparent properties to infrared ray of spinel itself and the red, green and blue colored spinel single crystals could be grown more easily. As a conclusion, the purpose of this study is to find the spinel single crystal growth mechanism with respect to th growth interfaces and molten zone stability and to characterize the state of growth resulting from the concavity to the melt of interfaces.

A computer simulation method is introduced to understand the joining phenomena of PC and CFRP by estimating the temperature of the weld zone. Following the prior or preliminary research, the power range was set between 3 watts and 7 watts, and the scanning speed was set at 500 mm/min and 1,000 mm/min, respectively. Based on the computer simulation, the temperature near the joining boundary was not sufficient at the scanning speed of 1,000 mm/min, regardless of the selected powers. However, the temperature increases above the melting temperature of the selected polymers at the scanning speed of 500 mm/min. The simulation results were compared with actual weld samples to validate its actual use.
