This study was carried out to estimate the contents of trace metals in the fishes and shellfishes available on Korean markets. The maples were digested with acids, then analyzed by ICP (INductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer) and AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrometer) for the contents of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn). The contents of mercury (Hg) were determined using a mercury analyzer. The contents of trace metals [minimum~ maximum (mean), mg/kg] in fishes were as follows; Hg;0.004~0.500(0.082), Pb;N.D.~ 1.87 (0.29), Cd;N.D. ~0.094 (0.020), As;0.01~5045 (0.84), Cu;0.04~3.74 (0.66), Mn; N.D. ~7.56 (0.57), Zn;0.92~18.33(6.03). Those contents in shellfishes were as follows (mg/kg); Hg;N.D.~0.221 (0.029), Pb;0.01~1.51 (0.38), Cd;0.02~1.93 (0.51), As;0.18~3.07 study showed that trace metal contents in both fishes and shellfishes on our markets of lead, cadmium and mercury from fishes and shellfishes takes about 1~13% of PTWI(Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intakes) that FAO/WHO Joint Food Additive and Contaminants Committee has set to evaluate their safeties.
To obtain basic data for the development of domestic tea manufacture, the physico-chemical properties were analyzed. The content of crude fiber in domestic black tea was abundant of 50%, as compared with those in Sri-Lanka's black tea, while the contents of tanin and caffeine were lower than those of Sri-Lanka's Products. The quantities of mineral in Sri-Lanka's products were determined as 300ppm P, 15,000ppm K, 1,400ppm Mg, 4,000ppm Ca, 22ppm Cu, 21ppm Cr and 45ppm Zn. These contents were higher than those of domestic products. Al content was 4,100ppm in domestic products. Pb and Cd were not detected in two kinds of black tea products. In Sri-Lanka's black tea, 8 kinds of organic acids were identified and the major organic acids were shikimic, citric and quinic acid, while 6 kinds of organic acids were identified in domestic products and were quinic and gallic acid, as the major organic acids. The content of sucrose was higher than that of Sri-Lanka's product and theaflavin, thearubigin and theobromine were abundant, as compared with those in domestic products.
A field survey was carried out in Korea to assess the mineral composition of rice straw since it is a cheap and available cattle feedstuff. Forage and soil samples were collected in 4 localities in the Kyongbuk province. Soil analysis were also carried out in order to establish the relationships between soil composition and mineral content in the rice straw. Based on NRC tables, the rice straw samples provided adequate amounts of Mg, Ca, K, S, Mo, Mn and Zn. Percentages of samples deficient in P, Na, Cu and Se were 83, 50, 67 and 83 respectively. Soil samples, whose mean pH was 5.8 and mean organic matter content was 3.99%, were comparatively acidic and had high organic matter content. They also had high amounts of extractable Fe and Mn. Correlation coefficients between mineral content in soil and rice straw were low, i.e., 0.42 for Me (p < 0.05), and 0.37 for Mo (p < 0.05). The low or nonexistent correlation between soil and forage composition indicates the difficulty of establishing appropriate methods of mineral availability to the plants.
Bisphenol A (BPA), a representative endocrine disrupting chemicals, has adverse effects on growth, development and reproduction in aquatic organisms. The object of this study was to investigate the modulation of antioxidant enzyme-coding genes using quantitative real time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), enzyme activity and total protein content, to understand oxidative stress responses after exposure to BPA for 48 h in brackish water flea Diaphanosoma celebensis. The BPA ($3mg\;L^{-1}$) significantly upregulated the expression of Cu/Zn-SOD, Mn-SOD, and catalase (CAT) mRNA. Three GST isoforms (GST-kappa, GST-mu, and GST-theta) mRNA levels significantly increased at the rate of $0.12mg\;L^{-1}$ of BPA. In particular, GST-mu showed the highest expression level, indicating its key role in antioxidant response to BPA. SOD activity was induced with a concentration-dependent manner, and total protein contents was reduced. These findings indicate that BPA can induce oxidative stress in this species, and these antioxidants may be involved in cellular protection against BPA exposure. This study will provide a better understanding of molecular mode of action of BPA toxicity in aquatic organisms.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the seasonal variation in the mineral contents of fruits and vegetables available all the year -round. We analyzed Na, K, Mg, Ca, P, Fe Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Se, and Al concentrations by ICP-mass in 4 fruits and 17 vegetables items which are frequently consumed in Koreans. For Na content, fall apples showed the highest levels among 4 seasons, but fall tangerines contained the lowest amount of Na among the four seasons. Among the vegetables, the spinach, carrots, and lettuce contained relatively high amounts of Na. The K contents of cucumbers, cabbage, and zucchini were higher in the fall than in the other seasons. For Ca and Fe contents, spring strawberries, fall pears, and fall cabbage had the highest levels. The Cr contents of the apples were higher in the fall and winter than those were in the spring and summer. The strawberries contained their highest amounts of Cr, Mn, and Cu in the spring. The above results showed there are seasonal differences in the mineral contents of fruits and vegetables. Additionally, the fruits and vegetables tended to contain more minerals in the season they were harvested. Therefore, it is recommended to consume those fruits and vegetables during their harvest season.
In Korea, buckwheat has historically held a very important position because it has been used as a food and traditional medicine. The objectives of this report were to mainly review the up to present papers includings 75 references about buckwheat's rutin, functional ingredients and their variations. Buckwheat provides an abundance of such nutrition as protein, amino acids, vitamin($B_1,\;B_2$, E, P), minerals(Fe, Zn, Mn, Mg, P, Cu, Ca, Se) and dietary fiber. Buckwheat's essential amino acid, lysine, is notably higher amount than cereals. Rutin(vitamin P), one of a group of flavonoids, is abundant in buckwheat and noted for its beneficial function of reducing every kinds of radiation and vascular diseases, diabetes mellitis and retinal hemorrhage, etc. Rutin also acts as a pigment stabilizer and acetone extracts of buckwheat have a potent tyrosinase inhibitory activity.
The distribution of Spirodela polyrhiza and Lemna aequinoctialis was investigated and the limiting factors on the distribution were analyzed. At 66 sites in Korea, the presense or absense of duckweed were recorded and the water was sampled. The temperature, hardness, pH and contents of N, , , Na, K, Ca, Cu, Mg, Zn, Fe, Ni, Mn and Cd of water sampled were analyzed. The results were as follows; It seemed that the limiting factors influencing on the distribution was water temperature and concentration of . The critical temperature of the distribution of Spirodela and Lemna was presented 19.5$^{\circ}C$ and concentration of was limiting factor only in the distribution of S. polyrhiza. L. aequinoctialis was distributed in lower temperature than S. polyrhiza and it seemed that the distribution of L. aequinoctialis was not be influenced by the concentration of .
White needle crystalline compound, mp.\;78{\sim}79$, was isolated from the petroleum ether fraction of the aerial parts of Chenopodium acuminatum. This compound was supposed to be cycloalkane by chemical properties, spectral data and elemental analysis. After extraction with petroleum ether, the methanolic extract of this plant found to contain aspartic acid, threonine, serine, glutamic acid, glycine, cystine, valine, isoleucine, tyrosine, and phenylalanine. Inorganic elements contained in this plant are as following: Mg 4.84%, Ca 9.602%, Zn 1.11%, K 29.104%, Mn 5.124%, Fe 27.039%, Co 0.31%, Pb 0.995%, Na 0.039% and Cu, 0.0076%.
The trace elements in animal feed were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS, VG-PlasmaQuad Co.) to find possible sources of heavy metals accumulation in rat organ. The study about spectral interference was performed by analysis of a background spectrum of ICP-MS. Recovery test using standard of Cd and Se (100 ppb) was found to be better than 90%. Twenty elements (Ca, Fe, Mg, Ti, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ba, Al, Mn, Pb, B, Ce, Bi, U, V, Cd, and W)are determined.

Some minor elements(Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Gd, Mg, Mn, Mo, Nd, Ni, P, Pb, Si, Sn, Sr, Ti, V, Yb, Zn and Zr) in iron compounds such as the S/G sludge of a power plant were separated from iron by anionic and cationic exchange methods. If a ICP-AES or AAS determination follows this method, minor elements of more than 2 or 20 ppm of Fe can be determined with an error less than 20% except Sn and Mo. Alkaline elements were excluded from this study since they can be easily recovered from an anionic exchange. Application to real sludge samples is ongoing.
