Aluminium-silicon based casting alloys have received an attention for high electrical and thermal conductivity applications, however relatively low conductivity of Al-Si alloys often limits the application. Efforts have been made to develop new high conductivity aluminium casting alloys containing no or less silicon. In this study Al-Zn-Fe based alloys were selected as the new alloys, and the effect of Mg additions on their properties and casting characteristics were investigated. As the magnesium content was increased, the tensile strength of Al-2Zn-0.2Fe based alloy was remarkably increased, while the electrical conductivity was deteriorated. It was observed that the fluidity of the alloys was generally inversely proportional to the Mg content but the hot cracking resistance was rather proportional to it. Cooling curve analyses were carried out to measure the actual solidification range and dendrite coherency temperature.

As-cast microstructure of Mg-rich $Mg_{68}Zn_{28}Y_4$ has been investigated by a detailed transmission electron microscopy. The as-cast $Mg_{68}Zn_{28}Y_4$ alloy consisted of three different types of phases: $10{\sim}20{\mu}m$ size primary solidification phase, dendritic phase grown from the primary phase and a eutectic structure formed at the later stage of solidification. The primary solidification phase has an icosahedral structure with a large degree of phason strain. 1/1 rhombohedral approximant phase with lattice parameters: $a=27.2{\AA}\;and\;{\alpha}=63.43^{\circ}$ is first observed in Mg-Zn-Y system. The rhombohedral structure can be obtained by introducing phason strain in the six dimensional face centered hyper-cubic lattice. The decagonal phase nucleates with orientation relationship with the icosahedral phase, and $Mg_4Zn_7$ nucleates with orientation relationship with the decagonal phase, indicating a close structural similarity between the three phases. Gradual depletion of Y during solidification plays an important role in heterogeneous nucleation of decagonal and $Mg_4Zn_7$ phases from icosahedral and decagonal phases respectively.
In this study, the characteristics of gas atomized Mg-3wt%Al-1wt%Zn-1wt%MM alloy powders under vacuum condition were investigated. In spite of the low fluidity and easy oxidation of the molten magnesium, the spherical powders could be successfully produced by using a modified three pieces nozzle attached to the gas atomization unit. It was found that most of the solidified powders less than 50$\mu$m in diameter were single crystal and the solidified structure showed a typical dendritic morphology due to supercooling prior to nucleation. The secondary dendrite arm spacing decreased as the size of powders decreased. The Mg-Al-Ce intermetallic compounds with chemically stable phase were found in the interdendritic regions of $\alpha$-Mg. It is considered that formation of the chemically stable phase may possibly affect to improve the corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is expected that the materials formed of these Mg-Al-Zn-MM alloy powders shows better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance due to the structural refinement.
In order to improve the weak mechanical properties of cast Mg alloys, Mg-$Zn_1Y_2$ (at%) alloy powders were synthesized using gas atomization, a typical rapid solidification process. The powders consist of fine dendrite structures less than 3 ${\mu}m$ in arm spacing. In order to fabricate a bulk form, the Mg powders were compacted using magnetic pulse compaction (MPC) under various processing parameters of pressure and temperature. The effects of the processing parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically investigated.

The LCC (Liquid Cadmium Cathode) structure to be developed for inhibiting the formation and growth of the uranium dendrite has been known as a key part in the electrowinning process for the simultaneous recovering of uranium and TRU (TRans Uranium) elements from spent fuels. A zinc-gallium (Zn-Ga) experimental system which is able to be functional in aqueous condition and normal temperature has been set up to observe the formation and growth phenomena of the metal dendrites on liquid cathode. The growth of the zinc dendrites on the gallium cathode and the performance of the existing stirrer type and pounder type cathode structure were observed. Although the mechanical strength of the dendrites appeared to be weak in the electrolyte and easily crashed by the various cathode structures, it was difficult to effectively submerge the dendrite into the bottom of the liquid cathode. Based on the results of the aqueous phase experiments, a lab-scale electrowinning experimental apparatus which are applicable to the development of LCC srtucture for the electrowinning process was established and the performance tests of the different types of LCC structure were conducted to prohibit the uranium dendrite growth on LCC surface. The experimental results of the stirrer type LCC structures have shown that they could not effectively remove the uranium dendrites growing at the inner side of the LCC crucible and the performances of the paddle and harrow type LCC structure were similar. Therefore a mesh type LCC structure was developed to push down the uranium dendrites to the bottom of the LCC crucible growing on the LCC surface and at the inner side of the crucible. From the experimental results for the performance test of the mesh type LCC structure, the uranium was recovered over 5 wt% in cadmium without the growth of uranium dendrites. After completion of the experiments, solid precipitates of the bottom of the LCC crucible were identified as an intermetallic compound (UCd11) by the chemical analysis.
Zn electrode was widely used as an anode material in alkaline battery systems in highly concentrated KOH electrolyte, however it was well known that its cycle life is significantly shortened by growth of dendrite due to the high dissolution of $Zn(OH)_2$ and rapid electrochemical reaction. In this study when by the additives such as $Ca(OH)_2$, Citrate, tartrate and Gluconate were added to $40\%$ KOH electrolyte at solution temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and the amount of $5wt\%\;Pb_3O_4$ was mixed to Zn electrode and then the effect of $Pb_3O_4$ and additives on the electrochemical behavior of Zn electrode was investigated by Potentiodynamic Polarization Curves, Cyclic Voltammetry, Accelerated Life Cycle lest, and SEM image analyses. The addition of $Pb_3O_4$ reduced the corrosion rate of Zn electrode. The corrosion potential of Zn electrode with $Pb_3O_4$ was higher or lower than that of pure Zn electrode however was not influenced practically to the open circuit voltage. And the addition of 4 type additives had an important role in improving both cycle life in accelerated cycle life test and corrosion resistance. Furthermore the additive of Tartrate indicated comparatively a good effect to corrosion resistance as well as charging-discharging property Improvement among those four type additives.
This study attempted to review the chemical composition of 25 samples of Sangpyeongtongbo having different manufacturing place and period, and then to find the manufacturing method. As a result of chemical composition analysis of Sangpyeongtongbo, main components include Cu, Zn and Pb, and some samples contained Sn and Fe. But, the chemical composition of each Sangpyeongtongbo varied with big differences. When the main content change was examined, Cu and Sn became decreased at the later period, and Zn and Pb had higher contents. The difference in the ingredient content had close relation for the profit of Sangpyeongtongbo. When refined microstructure was observed, 25 kinds of Sangpyeongtongbo had developed different types of microstructure such as dendrite, large grain and grain refinement. But, 25 kinds of Sangpyeongtongbo had no heat treatment processing. And, the types of microstructure were difference, which seems because different microstructure was developed due to the difference of Sn and Fe and cooling speed in Sangpyeongtongbo.
This study has been investigated the influence of solid solution treatment on the microstructure of Mg-6Al-xZn(x=0,1,2) alloys fabricated by squeeze casting process. The products having clean surface and fine microstructure are fabricated by adopting the liquid metal forging method. The microstructures of as-fabricated state show ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ precipitates between the dendrite boundaries. It is found that the hardness of the alloys is increased with increasing amount of zinc due to the solid solution hardening effect of zinc. In the changes of microstructure upon solid solution treatment time at $405^{\circ}C$, ${\beta}$ phases are dissolved in ${\alpha}$ matrix up to 1hr and the microstructure are coarsened rapidly after 2hrs. The microhardness are decreased rapidly until 1hr of solution treatment time and then stabilized. From the above results, it is concluded that the optimum solid solution treatment condition for Mg-6Al-xZn alloys is at $405^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. The solution treatment time is greatly reduced comparing to conventional casting(at $385{\sim}418^{\circ}C$ for 10~14hrs) due to the formation of the super-saturated solid solution by liquid metal forging.
In this study, the powders of Mg-3wt%Al-1wt%Zn-1wt%MM alloy were produced under vacuum condition by the inert gas atomization and the rapidly solidified powders were consolidated by the vacuum hot extrusion. Then the structural change of powders during extrusion was investigated. The effects of misch metal addition to AZ31 on mechanical properties of extruded bars were also examined. During extrusion of the rapidly solidified powders, their dendrite structure was broken into fragments and remained as grains of 2 ${\mu}m$ size in extruded bar. The Mg-Al-Ce intermetallic compounds formed in the interdendritic regions of powders were broken finely, too. The yield stress, tensile strength and ductility obtained in as-extruded Mg-3wt%Al-1wt%Zn-1wt%MM alloy were ${\sigma}_{0.2}=325$ MPa, ${\sigma}_{T.S.}=417$ MPa and ${\varepsilon}=16.8%$. All of these improvements on mechanical properties result from the refined micostructure and second-phase dispersions.
To investigate the physio-chemical components and properties of aerosol particles in urban area sampling of aerosol particles was carried out in the campus of Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, during snowfall. Aerosol particles were collected on millipore filter papers using a low volume air sampler. Their shapes, sizes and chemical components were analyzed by a SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and an EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray). As a results, ice crystals of dendrite and column types were predominantly shown at mature and developing stage of snowfall intensity. The denerite and sector plate types of ice crystals were mainly originated from the sea but column types were come from soil. Scavenging effect by snowfall was greatly also shown at dendrite type ice crystals that embryo was fully developd. Al, Si elements were shown at high frequencies as compared with others. Na, Cl components were especially shown at high frequencies under the sea-breeze wind during snowfall. Anthropogenic aerosol particles had shown with irregular shapes and sizes, relatively. Mainly 3-7$\mu$m aerosol particles were abundant and coarse particles also could be seen during snowfall. Ca, Zn, Fe components mainly caused by spike tires from vehicles in winter season were dominant before snowfall, however the element S mainly caused by human activity was rich after snowfall. The pH values of snow in Sapporo city were higher than those at coastal area. The concentration of chemical components in aerosol particles was also affected by surface winds. Aerosol particles in urban area, Sapporo were mainly affected by human activities like vehicles and combustion with wind system. And their types were related with snowfall intensity.
