  • The effect of Cu substitution on the properties of NiZn ferrites sintered at low temperature with composition is investigated. The densification of NiCuZn ferrite in dependent upon Cu content in the composition of (N/sub 0.5-x/Cu/sub x/ Zn/sub 0.5/O)(Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/)/sub 0.98/. Electrical resistivity is maximum at x=0.2. Dispersion characteristics of complex permeability of (Ni/sub 0.5-x/ Cu/sub x/Zn/sub 0.5/O)(Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3)/sub 0.98/ is observed above x=0.3 and relaxation frequency increases with higher temperature. The magnetic loss of NiCuZn ferrite is occurred above the Cu content x=0.3 at a low frequency.

  • The electrical properties of porous $SiO_2/ITO$ nano thin film were studied by complex impedance and conductive mechanisms were analyzed. According to the results of complex impedance, the activation energy of $SiO_2/ITO$ and $Zn-SiO_2/ITO$ were 0.309 eV, 0.077 eV in below $450^{\circ}C$ and 0.147 eV in over $450^{\circ}C$, respectively. In case of $SiO_2/ ITO$, slightly direct tunneling occurred at room temperature. The contribution for conduction was very tiny because of high barrier of silica. However, the conductivity abruptly increased in over $300^{\circ}C$ by Thermally assisted tunneling. In case of $Zn-SiO_2/ITO$, high conductivity in 1.26 ${\Omega}^{ -1}{cdot}cm^{-1}$ at room temperature appeared by space charge conduction or Frenkel-poole emission that Zn ions play a role as localized electron states.

  • Polyamide derived from azo compound of o-amino phenol coupled with acetyl acetone, maleic anhydride acid and p-phenylene diamine were prepared. The prepared polyamide (PA) was refluxed with metal salts of transition metal ions include, $Co^{+2},\;Cr^{+2},\;Ni^{+2},\;Cu^{+2},\;Zn^{+2},\;Cd^{+2}$ and $Fe^{+3}$ in dimethyl formamide (DMF) in different molar ratios. These complexes were characterized and identified by elemental and thermal analysis, IR, 1H NMR spectra. The data showed that PA ligand coordinates with metal ions in abidentate manner through donating N=N and O-H groups. The metal ions are surrounded by coordinated water molecules and anions to establish the geometrical structure of the complexes. The thermal analysis degradation at different temperatures explained the weight loss of hydrated water and the decompositions of complexes until a constant weight loss of metal oxides is obtained.

  • Al-Zn-Mg alloys, being high strength aluminum alloys, have attracted attention as a material of automobile parts that require higher mechanical properties and lightness. Automobile parts with complex shapes are manufactured by low-priced casting method, but Al-Zn-Mg alloys are difficult to cast because of its poor hot cracking, feeding, and fluidity. Thus fluidity experiments on Al-Zn-Mg alloys were conducted for the castability evaluation. The effects of Mg and Zn, representative elements of Al-Zn-Mg alloys, on fluidity were observed. Spiral mold was used for fluidity experiments and the lengths of solidified specimens were measured after melting and gravity casting. Correlation between microstructures and fluidity length based on the alloy composition was considered. According to the experimental results, as the amount of Mg and Zn increased, fluidity decreased. Also, it was confirmed that fluidity change by the variation of Mg composition was greater than that of Zn.

  • In order to investigate the pollution potential of soils after the construction of Onsan Industrial Complex(non-ferrous metal refineries), concentrations of hazardous heavy metals were analyzed for soil samples collected from paddy, upland, orchard and forest soils around the Complex during the period of March 1978 to May 1979. The results are summarized as follows. 1) The concentrations of heavy metals (air-dry basis) for cultivated soil samples from 46 sites were obtained in the range of trace-9.3 ppm As, trace-0.6 ppm Cd, 4${\sim}$22 ppm Cu, trace-0.37 ppm Hg, 6${\sim}$43 ppm Pb and 27${\sim}$93 ppm Zn, which were regarded as non-polluted when compared with the whole Korea data for non-polluted paddy soils. 2) When the heavy metal concentrations were compared with respect to paddy, upland and orchard soils, no significant difference was observed in As, Cd, Cu and Zn whereas significant difference was observed in Hg and Pb. When they were compared with respect to region surrounding the Complex, no significant difference was observed in As, Cd, Hg whereas significant difference was observed in Cu and Pb. 3) Soil samples from several sites near Korea Zinc Refinery were contaminated with Cd, Pb and Zn, due to the accidental emission during its testing operation. Any further contamination was not observed after regular operation of the Refinery.

  • Recently, high luminance and high efficiency were realized in OLEDs with multilayer structure including emitting materials such as metal-chelate complexes. New luminescent materials, [2- (2-hydroxyphenyl)-quinoline] (Zn(HPB)q), [(1,10-phenanthroline)- (8-hydroxyquinoline)] Zn(Phen)q was synthesized. Zn-Complexes have low molecular compound and thermal stability. The ionization potential(IP) and electron affinity(EA) of Zn-complexes were measured by cyclic-voltammetry(CV). The fundamental structure of the OLEDs was $ITO/{\alpha}$-NPD/Zn-Complex/Al and then we made device structure rightly in energy band gap. We using Zn(Phen)q as emitting layer and Zn(HPB)q as electron transport layer. We measured current density-voltage, luminance-voltage characteristics.

  • BACKGROUND: Contamination of soils by heavy metals is the serious environmental problem. In particular, industrial processing is one of the main sources of heavy metal contamination. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution characteristics of heavy metals in soils collected from industrial complex. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the soil contamination and enrichment factor (EF) of heavy metals were investigated in three national industrial complexes such as Yeosu, Ulsan and Sihwa Banwal industrial complexes. The target heavy metals includes Cd, Cu, As, Hg, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Ni. The results showed that the contents of Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn and Ni in Yeosu and the contents of Cu, As and Cr in Sihwa Banwal were higher than in any other industrial complex. The results of principal component analysis(PCA) in Yeosu, Ulsan and Sihwa Banwal complex could be explained up to approximately 81.4, 69.1 and 70.9% by two factor, respectively. Enrichment factors of Cd, Pb and Zn in all the investigated industrial complexes were above 1.0 that was the value judged to be a high contamination. And EF of Cr was above 1.0 in Sihwa Banwal complex. EF of Zn in all sites was generally high from the other heavy metals. CONCLUSION: Therefore, soils maybe significantly affected by heavy metals (especially, Cd, Pb and Zn) present in the emissions from industrial complexes.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare heavy metal concentrations in uncontaminated soil with those in soil influenced by industrial activities, and to investigate the relationship between change of heavy metal content and the kind of industry at the Iksan 1st Industrial Complex that has started since 1975. Soils sampled in 0-3㎝ and 3-6㎝ soil depth, respectively were analized for content of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. Change of heavy metal content in soil of the industrial complex were more accumulated 16 to 25% of Cd and Cu, 93% of Pb and Zn, respectively in samples compared with natural soil uncontaminated. But there was no different in Ni content between two soil. Distribution of Cd in soil layer of 0 to 3cm was the highest concentration of 5 ppm more at the textile industries, and then higher at the chemicals and the food processing industries. In 3 to 6㎝ soil layer Cd content was the highest concentration of 5 ppm more at the metal processing industries, and then higher at the textile industries. Cd accumulation in soil was different according to a kind of industry and soil depth. Cu content was the highest value of 400 ppm more in soil layer of 0 to 3cm at the manufacturing electric wires industry area and showed the accumulation phenomenon in soil layer 3 to 6cm at the ohmmeter, machines and electric wires industry area. Ni content was 35 ppm more in soil of the metal plating and processing industries regardless of soil sampling layer. Then it was 25 ppm more in soil of the building stones and semiconductor industries. Pb content was from 400 to 1000 ppm in soil of the chemicals and textiles industries regardless of soil sampling layer. Zn content was 1200 ppm more in soil of the chemicals and silk fabrics industries regardless of soil depth, and then lower in order to soil of leather processing${\le}$metal plating industries. In conclusion, changes of heavy metal kinds and content in soil of this industrial complex area were caused by the type or kinds of industrial activities. Changes of Pb and Zn content in soil were dominated at this area.

  • An effect of thermal annealing on activating phosphorus (P) atoms in ZnO nanorods (NR) grown using a hydrothermal process was investigated. $NH_4H_2PO_4$ used as a dopant source reacted with $Zn^{2+}$ ions and $Zn_3(PO_4)_2$ sediment was produced in the solution. The fact that most of the input P elements are concentrated in the $Zn_3(PO_4)_2$ sediment was confirmed using an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). After the hydrothermal process, ZnO NRs were synthesized and their PL peaks were exhibited at 405 and 500 nm because P atoms diffused to the ZnO crystal from the $Zn_3(PO_4)_2$ particles. The solubility of the $Zn_3(PO_4)_2$ initially formed sediment varied with the concentration of $NH_4OH$. Before annealing, both the structural and the optical properties of the P-doped ZnO NR were changed by the variation of P doping concentration, which affected the ZnO lattice parameters. At low doping concentration of phosphorus in ZnO crystal, it was determined that a phosphorus atom substituted for a Zn site and interacted with two $V_{Zn}$, resulting in a $P_{Zn}-2V_{Zn}$ complex, which is responsible for p-type conduction. After annealing, a shift of the PL peak was found to have occurred due to the unstable P doping state at high concentration of P, whereas at low concentration there was little shift of PL peak due to the stable P doping state.

  • Zn_{0.994}Mn_{0.006}Ga_2O_4$ green phosphor powders were synthesized using polymerized complex and solution combustion methods, and their powder and luminescence properties were characterized by XRD, SEM, BET, PL, etc. The properties were compared with those of the powders prepared by a solid state reaction method. The powders prepared by polymerized complex and solution combustion methods showed only a single spinel phase at 50$0^{\circ}C$ and 40$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Their particle sizes were smaller than that of a solid state reaction method. Emission intensity of the phosphor powders prepared by both methods were highest at 90$0^{\circ}C$ and 40$0^{\circ}C$, respectively.
