  • $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphors doped with Ca were synthesized by solid state reaction method. $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphors showed XRD patterns of Willemite structure. Also, $CaSiO_3$ structure and new peak near 610 nm in $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn with increasing value of x were observed from XRD and PL. The new peak near 610 nm in $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn with doping Ca was attributed to formation of $CaSiO_3$.

  • ZnxMn3-xO4 (0.95≤x≤1.20) specimens were prepared using a conventional solid state reaction method. All specimens were sintered in air at 1,200℃ for 12 h, cooled at a rate of 2℃/min to 800℃, and subsequently quenched to room temperature. We investigated the electrical properties of ZnxMn3-xO4 specimens with various amounts of ZnO for use as IR detectors. At a composition of x≥1.15, the ZnO phase precipitates beside the spinel structure. The electrical resistivity at room temperature, activation energy, responsivity, and detectivity of a Zn1.10Mn1.90O4 specimen are 653.2 kΩ-cm, 0.392 eV, 0.016 V/W, and 7.52×103 cmHz1/2/W, respectively.

  • [ $Zn_{2(1-x)}Mn_xSiO_4$ ]$0.07{\leq}x{\leq}0.15$) green phosphor was prepared by solid state reaction. The first heating was at $900^{\circ}C-1250^{\circ}C$ in air for 3 hours and the second heating was at $900^{\circ}C$ in $N_2/H_2$(95%/5%) for 2 hours. The size effect of $SiO_2$ in forming $Zn_2SiO_4$ was investigated. The temperature for obtaining single phase $Zn_2SiO_4$ was lowered from $1100^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$ by decreasing the $SiO_2$ particle size from micro size to submicro size. The effect of the activators for the Photoluminescence (PL) intensity of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$ was also investigated. The PL intensity properties of the phosphors were investigated under vacuum ultraviolet excitation (147 nm). The emission spectrum peak was between 520 nm and 530 nm, which was involved in green emission area. $MnCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, the activator source, was more effective in providing high emission intensity than $MnCO_3$. The optimum conditions for the best optical properties of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$ were at x = 0.11 and $1100^{\circ}C$. In these conditions, the phosphor particle shape was well dispersed spherical and its size was 200 nm.

  • We investigated the sintering behavior and piezoelectric properties of lead-free $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3$ ceramics co-doped with excess 0.01 mol ZnO and x mol $MnO_2$, where x was varied from 0 to 0.03. Excess $MnO_2$ addition was found to retard the grain growth and densification during sintering. However, 0.005 mol $MnO_2$ addition improved the piezoelectric properties of 0.01 mol ZnO added $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3$ ceramics. The planar mode piezoelectric coupling coefficient, electromechanical quality factor, and piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ of 0.01 mol ZnO and 0.005 mol $MnO_2$ added specimen were 0.40, 304, and 214 pC/N, respectively.

  • Mn-doped $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin film phosphors have been grown using a pulsed laser deposition technique under various growth conditions. The structural characterization carr~ed out on a series of $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) films grown on MgO(l00) substrates usmg Zn-rich ceramic targets. Oxygen pressure was varied from 50 to 200 mTorr and Zn/Ga ratio was the function of oxygen pressure. XRD patterns showed that the lattice constants of the $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin film decrease with the substitution of sulfur and selenium for the oxygen in the $ZnGa_2O_4$. Measurements of photoluminescence (PL) properties of $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin films have indicated that MgO(100) is one of the most promised substrates for the growth of high quality $ZnGa_2O_{4-x}M_{x}$:$Mn^{2+}$ (M=S, Se) thin films. In particular, the incorporation of Sulfur or Selenium into $ZnGa_2O_4$ lattice could induce a remarkable increase in the intensity of PL. The increasing of green emission intensity was observed with $ZnGa_2O_{3.925}Se_{0.075}:$Mn^{2+}$ and $ZnGa_2O_{3.925}S_{0.05}$:$Mn^{2+}$ films, whose brightness was increased by a factor of 3.1 and 1.4 in comparison with that of $ZnGa_{2}O_{4}$:$Mn^{2+}$ films, respectively. These phosphors may promise for application to the flat panel displays.

  • The $(1-x)La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3(LSMO)/xZnFe_2O_4$(ZFO) (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.06 and 0.09) composites were prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction method. We investigated the structural properties, magnetic properties and electrical transport properties of (1-x)LSMO/xZFO composites using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field-cooled dc magnetization and magnetoresistance (MR) measurements. The XRD and SEM results indicate that LSMO and ZFO coexist in the composites and the ZFO mostly segregates at the grain boundaries of LSMO, which agreed well with the results of the magnetic measurements. The resistivity of the samples increased by the increase of the ZFO doping level. A clear metal-to-insulator (M-I) transition was observed at 360K in pure LSMO. The introduction of ZFO further downshifted the transition temperature (350K-160K) while the transition disappeared in the sample (x = 0.09) and it presented insulating/semiconducting behavior in the measured temperature range (100K to 400K). The MR was measured in the presence of the 10kOe field. Compared with pure LSMO, the enhancement of low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR) was observed in the composites. It was clearly observed that the magnetoresistance effect of x = 0.03 was enhanced at room temperature range. These phenomena can be explained using the double-exchange (DE) mechanism, the grain boundary effect and the intrinsic transport properties together.

  • Zn/sub 2-x/Mn/sub x/SiO/sub 4/ phosphors for PDP were synthesized by solid state reaction method. The effects of firing temperature, ratio of hydrogen gas to nitrogen for heat treatment and concentration of activator and co-dopants on the luminous properties have been investigated. It was found that the phosphor fabricated at 1400℃ with x = 0.002 Mn concentration had a maximum brightness. Luminous properties of a phosphor were improved when Cr/sup 3+/ was added as a co-dopant rather than other co-dopants.

  • The CMR properties and magnetic properties of sulphospinels $Zn_xFe_{1-x}Cr_2S_4$ have been explored by X-ray diffraction, magnetoresistance measurement, and $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The crystal structures in the range of x=0.05, 0.1, 0.2 are cubic at room temperature. Magnetoresistance measurement indicates that these system is semiconducting below about 160 K. The temperature of maximum magnetoresistance is almost consistent with Curie temperature. The Zn substitutions for Fe occur to increase the Jahn-Teller relaxation and the electric quadrupole shift. CMR properties could be explained with Jahn-Teller effect, and half-metallic electronic structure, which is different from both the double exchange interactions of manganite La-Ca-Mn-O system and the triple exchange interactions of chalcogenide $Cu_xFe_{1-x}Cr_2S_4$.

  • The ferrite plating with applying power ultrasound waves of 19.5 kHz and 600W enabled us to encapsulate entirely MnZn ferrite cores for transformers with Ni$\sub$x/Zn$\sub$y/Fe$\sub$3-x-y/O$_4$coating. Supplying a NH$_4$OH solution during the plating broke the limit of the solubility of Ni ions to ferrite-plated films. The electrical resistivity of the NiZn ferrite coating increased with increasing the Ni and Zn content, reaching 2.3${\times}$10$\^$5/Ωcm at the composition of Ni$\sub$0.24/Zn$\sub$0.30/Fe$\sub$2.46/O$_4$. The saturation magnetization was 540 emu/㎤. As a result, the MnZn ferrite cores were successfully encapsulated with the NiZn ferrite coatings for an insulation layer.

  • In this study, heavy metal removal and precipitation characteristics with pH change were studied for artificial acid mine drainage. Artificial acid mine drainage was prepared using sulfates of iron, aluminum, copper, zinc, manganese which contained in acid mine drainage from abandoned mines. The single and mixed five heavy metal samples of Fe, Al, Cu, Zn, and Mn were prepared at initial concentrations of 30 and 70 mg/L. Fe and Al were mostly removed at pH 4.0 and 5.0, respectively, and other heavy metals gradually decreased with increasing pH. Concentration changes with increasing pH show generally similar trend for single and mixed heavy metal samples. The effect of removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions is not related to the initial concentration and depends on the pH change. XRD were used for mineral identification of precipitates and crystallinity of the mineral tended to increase with increasing pH. The precipitates that produced by decreasing the concentration of heavy metals in the aqueous solution composed of Fe-goethite(FeOOH), Al-basaluminite(Al4(SO4)(OH)10·4H2O), Cu-connellite(Cu19(OH)32(SO4)Cl4·3H2O) and tenorite(CuO), Zn-zincite(ZnO), and Mn-hausmannite(Mn3O4).
