  • By using commercial zirconia powder CeO2-ZrO2 ceramics containing 8~16mol% CeO2 was made by heat treatment at 1350~155$0^{\circ}C$ for 1~10hr. The minimum amount of CeO2 for obtaining complete tetragonal phase was 12mol%, and in the tetragonal phase region fracture toughness of Ce-TZP was decreased with increasing CeO2 content and the maximum value was obtained when 12mol% CeO2 was added. The bending strength goes through maximum at 14mol% CeO2. Fracture mode of Ce-TZP transformed from intergranular to transgranular fracture with increasing CeO2 content, so the morphology of fracture surface of 16mol% Ce-TZP was wholly transgranular and this tendency was independent on grain size. The crystal structure of the 12mol% Ce-TZP was monoclinic with fringes along the grain boundaries which are lying in the particular plane from the TEM observation. The chemical composition of the sintered body was homogeneous as a whole and some amorphism or air pocket was observed at the triple junction.

  • The effect of stress induced phase transformation on $Al_2 O_3$ matrix dispersed with $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$ has been studied. In order to determinate the mechanical properties three $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ composite series containing 1, 3 and 5 mole% $Y_2O_3$ were prepared. The starting materials were $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$ which was prepared from the aqueous solution of high purity $YCl_3$.$6H_2O$ and $ZrOCl_2$.$8H_2O$. Powder mixtures of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ containing $Y_2O_3$ have been prepared by ball-milling with methanol and the samples were formed by isostatic press and sintered at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. After sintering. the specimens were polished for mechanical determination. The relative density of sintered specimens were also measured. It was found that the addition of 1, 3mole% to {{{{ { ZrO}_{2 } }} allowed full retention of the tetragonal phase in $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ but partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) was produced by additions of 5 mole% $Y_2O_3$.The critical stress-intensity factor KIc of $A_2O_3-ZrO_2$ (containing 1 mole% $Y_2O_3$) composite materials increased with increasing $ZrO_2$ content, The maximum value of KIC=7Mn/$m^3$/2 at 20 mole% $ZrO_2$ exhibited about twice that of the $Al_2 O_3$ The modulus of rupture exhibited a trend similiar to KIC The maximum value of MOR was 580MN/m2. As the amount of Y2O3 increase it was observed that the maximum of KIC and MOR decreased : Additions of 3 mole% $Al_2O_3$ $Y_2O_3$ allowed the maximum of KIC 6MN/$m^3$/2 MOR 540MN/$m^2$ at 15 mole% $ZrO_2$ additions of 5 mole% $Y_2O_3$ allowed the maximum of KIC 5MN/$m^3$/2 MOR 410MN/$m^2$ at 10 mole% $ZrO_2$.

  • The phase stability and the Low Temperature Degradation(LTD) mechanism of Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals(TZP), sintered specimens of $Y_2O_3$-Stabilized Zirconia(2Y-TZP), doped with trivalent cations, were evaluated by investigating meachnical properties, Raman spectra, lattice parameter variation and the oxygen vacancy behavior under applied electric field. XRD observation was put forward on 2Y-TZP doped with trivalent cation whose ionic radii were larger than $Zr^{4+}(Sc^{3+},\;Yb^{3+},\;Y^{3+},\;Sm^{3+},\;Nd^{3+},\;La^{3+})$ up to 2 mol% and sintered at 1500 h for 1h. For $La^{3+}$ doping, the stability of tetragonal phase was degraded due to the formation of the pyrochlore phase $(La_2Zr_2O_7)$ as the dopant content increased above exceeded 0.5 mol%. As the dosage increased, tetragonal phase maintained for the case of $Sc^{3+}$, whose radius was similar to $Zr^{4+}$, on the other hand, the cubic phase was formed for the cases of $Yb^{3+},\;Y^{3+},\;Sm^{3+},\;Nd^{3+}$. As the radii of dopant cation increased, c/a ratio increased and it was experimentally observed that the amount of monoclinic phase decreased when the specimens were annealed at $220{\circ}C$ for 500 h.

  • We investigated hydrogen storage and production properties using redox system of iron oxide($Fe_{3}O_{4}$ + $4H_{2}$ ${\leftrightarrows}$ 3Fe + $4H_{2}O$) modified with rhodium, ceria and zirconia under atmospheric pressure. Reduction of iron oxide with hydrogen(hydrogen storage) and re-oxidation of reduced iron oxide with steam(hydrogen evolution) was carried out using a temperature programmed reaction(TPR) technique. On the temperature programmed studies, the effects of amounts of cerium and zirconium on the re-oxidation rate of partial reduced iron oxides were increased with increasing metal additives amount, but the rhodium amount showed little effect on the re-oxidation rate. On the thermal studies, the re-oxidation rates were enhanced with increasing temperature(300 $^{\circ}C$ < 350 $^{\circ}C$).

  • Joining Yittria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) to NiCr metal was fabricated using YSZ/NiCr Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) Interlayer by hot pressing process. Microscopic observations demonstrate that the composition and microstructure of YSZ/NiCr FGM distribute gradually in stepwise way, eliminating the macroscopic ceramic/metal interface such as that in traditional ceramic/metal joint. The thermal characteristics of this YSZ/FGM/NiCr joint were studied by thermal shock testing and therml barrier testing. Thermal shock test was conducted by gas burner rig. Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring was performed to analyze the microfracture behavior during the thermal shock test. It could be confirmed that FGM was the excellent performance of thermal shock/barrier resistance at above $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • We report here the surface behavior of zirconium oxide deposited on Si(100) substrate depending on the different substrate temperatures. The zirconium oxide thin films were successfully deposited on the Si(100) surfaces applying radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering process. The obtained zirconium oxide films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for study about the chemical environment of the elements, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for check the crystallinity of the films, spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) technique for measuring the thickness of the films, and the morphology of the films were investigated by atomic force microscope (AFM). We found that the oxidation states of zirconium were changed from zirconium suboxides ($ZrO_{x,y}$, x,y < 2) (x; higher and y; lower oxidation state of zirconium) to zirconia ($ZrO_2$), and the surface was smoothed as the substrate temperature increased.

  • In this investigation, bar-shaped specimens which consisted of three layers are prepared to study the effects of residual compressive stress on the mechanical properties in ZTA. The outer layers contained Al2O3 and unstabilized ZrO2 and the central layer contained Al2O3 and stabilized ZrO2(with 5.10wt% Y2O3). When cooled from the sintering temperature, some of zirconia in the outer layers transformed to the monoclinic form while zirconia in the central layer was retained in the tetragonal form. The transformation which induces to dilatational expansion led to the estabilishmenet of compressive stress in the outer layers and balances tensile stress in the central layer. Decrease of outer layer thickness(for a fixed total thickness)increases residual compressive stress. Because of residual compressive stress in the outer layers, the fracture toughness of outer layers of 3-layers composite is 10.21 Mpam1/2, which is increased to 25% above in comparison with 1-layer specimens in ZTA. Also, the 3-layers composite is believed to exhibite greater fracture resistance in contact damage environment from thermal shock test.

  • Co-(0.5 mol%) and Ce-(0~0.3 mol%) doped cubic zirconia ($ZrO_2:Y_2O_3$=64:36 mol%) single crystals grown by a skull melting method were heat-treated in $N_2$ at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs. The brown-colored as-grown single crystals were changed into either green or blue color after the heat treatment. Before and after the heat treatment, the YSZ (yttriastabilized zirconia) single crystals were cut for wafer form (${\phi}7mm{\times}t2mm$) and round brilliant cut ($\phi$ 12 mm). The optical and structural properties were examined by UV-VIS spectrophotometer and X-ray diffraction. Absorption by $Ce^{3+}(^2F_{5/2},\;_{7/2}(4f){\rightarrow}^2T_g(5d^1)),\;Co^{2+}(^4A_2(^4F){\rightarrow}^4T_1(^4F)$ or $^4T_1(^4P))$ and $Co^{3+}$, change of ionization energy and lattice parameter were confirmed.

  • Mullite-zirconia (0∼4 mol% yttria) composites were obtained by In-situ sintering of zircon and alumina mixture, and their mechanical properties were studied in conjuction with microstructure observation. Martensitic transformation temperature (Ms) of zirconia dispersed in the mullite matrix decreased with Y2O3 contents and was about 600$^{\circ}C$ for ZrO2 containing 4 mol% Y2O3. On cooling of this composites, tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation induced microcracks at the grain boundary of mullite matrix. The microcracks seemed to absorb the fracture energy in stress field during mechanical tests. Therefore, toughening mechanisms of this composite were considered to nucleation and extension of microcrack, and crack deflection mechanism due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between matrix and dispersed phase.

  • Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites are fabricated through intensive ball milling to mix fine SiC particles uniformly with the Al2O3 powder. Another role of milling is to reduce particle sizes by crushing particles as well as agglomerates. However, balls are worn during ball milling and the sample powder mixtures pick up to weight loss of the balls. In this study, pressureless sintering was performed to obtain Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites. It was found that the wear rate of zirconia balls during milling was considerable, and the zirconia addition after even a few hours of ball milling could increase the sintering rates of the nanocomposites significantly. Thus, addition of ZrO2 changed the sintering behaviors as well as mechanical properties of Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites.
