  • Zinc ethyl silicate coatings containing multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared, to which we added spherical and flake shaped zinc particles. The anti-corrosive effects of MWCNTs and zinc shapes on the zinc ethyl silicate coated carbon steel was examined, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and corrosion potential measurement. The results of EIS and corrosion potential measurement showed that the zinc ethyl silicate coated with flake shaped zinc particles and MWCNT showed lesser protection to corrosion. These outcomes were in agreement with previous results of corrosion potential and corrosion occurrence.

  • The demand for sub-micrometer or nanometer functional ceramic powders with a better suspension behavior in aqueous media in increasing. Redispersible barium titanate (BT) nanocrystals, green light emitting Mn2+ doped Zn$_2$SiO$_4$ and ZnS nanoparticle phosphors were synthesized by a hydrothermal method or chemical precipitation with surface modification. The nanoparticle redispersibility for BT was achieved by using a polymeric surfactant. X-ray diffraction(XRD) results indicated that the BT particles are of cubic phase with 80 nm in size. XRD results of zinc silicate phosphor indicate that seeds play an important role in enhancing the nucleation and crystallization of Zn$_2$SiO$_4$ crystals in a hydrothermal condition. This paper describes and discuss the methods of surface modification, and the resulting related properties for BT, zinc silicate and zinc sulfide.

  • Zinc crystal glaze has its limits in practical use of commercial glaze due to the controlling crystal. In order to overcome this limit, and to heighten the practical usage, this study is aimed to develop artificially controlling willemite ($Zn_2SiO_4$) zinc crystalline glaze. For this purpose, it has experimented with the effect of anatase form and rutile form using $TiO_2$ known as nucleating agent. In zinc glaze, adding $TiO_2$ resulted with anatase form becoming more effective at nucleating formation and growth of willemite than the rutile form. Furthermore, it turned out that using the $TiO_2$ - anatase form, with synthetic seeds (zinc silicate), the numbers and positions of crystals can be controlled artificially.

  • Aluminum and zinc titanium silicate sol-gel films were fabricated for application of waveguide and the effect of additions of ZnO and $Al_2O_3$ to binary titanium silicate films was investigated. During firing, the films are densified as they shrunk and their refractive index increases in the range of 1.58-1.83 depending on the film composition. The attenuation of the waveguides is not sensitive to changes in composition except for zinc titanium silicate waveguides which have substantially higher attenuation. However, the increase in the attenuation with aging of the waveguides depend upon the composition of waveuides. The addition $Al_2O_3$ or the reduced $SiO_2$ content in the composition appears to slow the deterioration of the waveguides due to the formation of more stable bonds and increased acidity on the film surface. Also, the wavelength dependence of the attenuation of the waveguides varies with composition. The attenuation of the waveguides except for the $65SiO_2{\cdot}35TiO_2$ composition are not Rayleigh scatter limited, suggesting the absorption loss of the waveguides due to the effects of residual carbon and structural defects in the films.

  • With the content of ZnO varing from 10.5 to 47.4 wt%, the crystallization of lithium zinc silicate glass was investigated by DTA, XRD, and SEM. In this work P2O5 was used as nucleation agent. The crystallization temperature was found to increase with the content of ZnO and the microstructure of formed crystalling phases was studied through the scanning electron microscopy. According to the XRD analysis, the crystal phases formed are summarized as follows. 1) The major phases are lithium orthosilicate, lithium disilicate and quartz at 10.5 wt% ZnO. 2) Lithium zinc silicate polymorphous and cristobalite occur in the composition varying 21.3 to 30.8 wt% ZnO. 3) At composition containing 47.4wt% ZnO some quantity of willemite is formed.

  • Mineralogical study of original and crushed zinc ores as well as mill products was made in order to find out the cause of low-grade concentrate and the scheme of raising its grade. Low-grade concentrate is due to 1) the abundance of other independent sulfides (arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, stannite) and silicate (quartz) in the zinc concentrate, 2) the presence of composite grains of sphalerite and other sulfides or silicate, 3) the presence of a lot of very fine-grained particle of stannite and chalcopyrite within the sphalerite grains, and 4) the high content of iron in sphalerite. It is proposed that further crushing and other appropriate processing should be made in order to increase the grade of zinc concentrate.

  • Zinc silicate ($Zn_2SiO_4$) has been identified as a suitable host material for a wide variety of luminescent activators, such as transition metal and rare earth elements. In particular, manganese-activated $Zn_2SiO_4$ exhibits highly efficient photoluminescenceand cathodoluminescence, which allows this material to be used in fluorescent lamps and display applications. In this study, we investigated the green and yellow luminescence from Mn-doped $Zn_2SiO_4$ thin films that were synthesized using radio frequency magnetron sputtering followed by annealing at $600{\sim}1,200^{\circ}C$ The refractive index of the $Zn_2SiO_4$: Mn films showed normal dispersion behavior. It was found that the $Zn_2SiO_4$: Mn films annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ ossessed a mixture of alpha and beta phases. The obtained photoluminescence spectrum consisted of two emission bands centered at 525 nm in the green range and 574 nm in the yellow range. The green luminescence originates from the divalent Mn ions in alpha phase of $Zn_2SiO_4$, while the yellow luminescence comes from the divalent Mn ions in beta phase. The films annealed at and above $900^{\circ}C$ xhibited only the alpha phase. The broad PL excitation band was observed ranging from 220 to 300 nm with a maximum at around 243 nm.

  • Resistive switching behaviors of a co-sputtered zinc silicate thin film (ZnO and SiO2 targets) have been investigated. We fabricated an Ag/ZnSiOx/highly doped n-type Si substrate device by using an RF magnetron sputter system. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) indicated that the Zn2SiO4 was formed by a post annealing process. A unique morphology was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). As a result of annealing process, 50 nm sized nano clusters were formed spontaneously in 200~300 nm sized grains. The device showed a unipolar resistive switching process. The average value of the ratio of the resistance change between the high resistance state (HRS) and the low resistance state (LRS) was about 106 when the readout voltage (0.5 V) was achieved. Resistance ratio is not degraded during 50 switching cycles. The conduction mechanisms were explained by using Ohmic conduction for the LRS and Schottky emission for the HRS.

  • The authers have studied the marginal leakage on various filing materials : Composite resin, Polycarboxylate cement, Zinc phosphate cement, Silicate cement and Zinc-oxide eugenol cement, by means of penetration of 2% aquous methylene blue between cavity walls and filing materials at body temperature and at thermal changs in the range of 4~60℃ The results revealed as follows. 1) All the filling materials revealed the penetration of dye between cavity walls and filling materials. 2) Zinc-oxide eugenol cement was the most effective to prevent the dye penetration on the contrary silicate cement cases showed greatest leakage at 37℃ and at temperature changes in range of 4-60℃. 3) The composite resin showed moderate leakage either at 37℃ or at thermal changes 4) Marginal obstructions of polycarboxylate cement were unsatisfactory at 37℃ and at temperature changes.
