  • This paper proposed a novel low-power video decoding scheme for mobile multimedia communication. In general, there are quite a large number of non-coded blocks in the encoded bitstream where all quantized DCT coefficients are truncated into zero. When the number of the non-coded blocks are known at the start of frame decoding, the amount of computation reduction can be precisely estimated for frame decoding. When the computation reduces, the operation speed and the corresponding supply voltage of VLSI circuits in the decoder also reduce, thus thus power consumption also reduces. In the proposed scheme, the number of the non-coded blocks is stored in the frame header of the encoded bitstream, and the decoder efficiently reduces the power consumption exploiting this information. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the power consumption to about 1/20.

  • The performance characteristics of a dynamic control system are evaluated according to the transient and steady-state responses. The transient performance is the controllability of the output for the tracking of the reference or the ability to reduce or reject the effects of unwanted disturbances; alternatively, the steady-state performance is represented by the magnitude of the control error at the steady state. As the effects of the two performances on each other are reciprocal, a controller design that shows a zero steady-state error for the ramp input is uncommon because of the challenge regarding the achievement of an acceptable transient response. This paper proposes a PI+double-integral controller for the elimination of the steady-state error for the ramp input while a sound transient performance is maintained. The control-gain design procedure is described by the second-order response for the step input and the response of the error dynamics for the ramp input. The PI+double-integral controller is designed for the first-order transfer function that is derived from a system identification with the open-loop experiment data of the dc-motor. The simple structure of the proposed controller enables the adoption of a low-end microcontroller for the implementation of a real-time control. The experiment results show that the control performance is as effective as that of the simulation analysis for the operating point of linear system; furthermore, the PI+double-integral controller can be conveniently applied to the control system, which is desirable for the improvement of the steady-state error.

  • The combination of multiple antennas and multi-carrier code division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) is a strong candidate for the downlink of the next generation mobile communications. The study of such systems in scenarios that model real-life trans-missions is an additional step towards an optimized achievement. We consider a realistic MIMO channel with two or four transmit antennas and up to two receive antennas, and channel state information (CSI) mismatches. Depending on the mobile terminal (MT) class, its number of antennas or complexity allowed, different data-rates are proposed with turbo-coding and asymptotic spectral efficiencies from 1 to 4.5 bit/s/Hz, using three algorithms developed within the European IST-MATRICE project. These algorithms can be classified according to the degree of CSI at base-station (BS): i) Transmit space-frequency prefiltering based on constrained zero-forcing algorithm with complete CSI at BS; ii) transmit beamforming based on spatial correlation matrix estimation from partial CSI at BS; iii) orthogonal space-time block coding based on Alamouti scheme without CSI at BS. All presented schemes require a reasonable complexity at MT, and are compatible with a single-antenna receiver. A choice between these algorithms is proposed in order to significantly improve the performance of MC-CDMA and to cover the different environments considered for the next generation cellular systems. For beyond-3G, we propose prefiltering for indoor and pedestrian microcell environments, beamforming for suburban macrocells including high-speed train, and space-time coding for urban conditions with moderate to high speeds.

  • Cluster systems employ high speed interconnection networks and use efficient communication layers to gain high performance and scalability. But the diversity in implementation mechanism among these communication layers causes lack of portability. A solution is to provide communication standard APIs such as MPI. This paper introduces MPI-VMMC: an MPI implementation on VMMC. Though the direct deposit transfer mechanism used in VMMC is not suitable for Send/Recv mechanism used in MPI, the proposed sub-layer laid between MPI and VMMC efficiently translates from one mechanism to the other. We also use the lazy pointer and selective zero-copy transfer technique to gain high performance. The peak performance of MPI-VMMC is 90.7Mbytes/sec, which is about 95% of the base communication layer\`s.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for the appropriate parameter selection of a power system stabilizer and power converters in two-area power systems with a series HVDC links. The method for PSS is one of the classical techniques by allocating properly poly-zero positions to fit as closely as desired the ideal phase lead and by changing the gain to produce a necessary damping torque. Proper parameter of power converters are obtained in order to have sufficient speed and stability margin to cope with changing reference values and disturbances based on the Root-locus technique. The small signal and transient stability studies using the PSS and power converters parameters obtained from these methods show that a natural oscillation frequency of the study case system is adequately damped. The simulation used in the paper was performed by the Power System Toolbox software program based on MATLAB.

  • This paper focuses on vehicle fuel economy improvement using D-Range neutral control of automatic transmission. The system objected to reducing of fuel consumption during idle. Usually, turbine of conventional auto transmission is mechanically linked to wheel during idling condition. Therefore speed ratio of torque converter is zero for that period. This causes needless power loss by the torque converter slip. To improve this inefficiency automobile makers develops electronically-controlled D-range neutral control system. The D-range neutral control system minimizes slip on the torque converter by shifting gear to a neutral position during vehicle stoped with D-range gear position. However there's insufficient study about the effect of D-range neutral control system on vehicle fuel economy. In this paper, researches are performed on effect of D-range neutral control system on vehicle fuel economy by experiment with two different vehicle. And it is also estimated the effect on vehicle fuel economy using computer simulation. As a result, 1.8% of LA-4 mode fuel economy improvement can be achieved in a vehicle by D-range neutral control system.

  • An experimental study on aerodynamic coefficients of a lambda wing configuration was performed at the low speed wind tunnel of Agency for Defense Development. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sideslip angle on various aerodynamic coefficients. In the case of $0^{\circ}C$ sideslip angle, nose-up pitching moment rapidly increases at a specific angle of attack. This unstable pitching moment characteristic is referred to as pitch break or pitch up. As the sideslip angle increases, the pitch break is found to be generated at a higher angle of attack. Rolling moment is found to show similar behavior pattern to 'pitch break' style with angle of attack at non-zero sideslip angles. This trend gets severer at greater sideslip angles. Yawing moment also shows substantial variation of the slope and the unstable directional stability with sideslip angles at higher angles of attack. These characteristics of the three moments clearly implies the difficulty of the flight control which requires efficient control augmentation system.

  • In order to investigate the variation of microstructure and property of the Electro-slag Remelted M2 steel, microstructure observation, hardness, and bending test were performed by using optical microscope. SEM/EDS, rockwell hardness tester, charpy impact tester and bending tester, respectively. It was revealed that the number of inclusions and content of gas elements(S, O, N) in M2 steel fabricated by ESR process decreased markedly compared to those of AIM. It seems to be due to refining effect of ESR process. The volume fraction of carbides in quenched and tempered specimens after austenitizing at 1150$^{\circ}C$ and 1240$^{\circ}C$ was measured. The volume fraction of grain boundary carbides were found to be similar for both specimens. However, The volume fraction of carbides in grain decreased with an increase of austenitizing temperature. When specimen was austenitized at 1150$^{\circ}C$, grain boundary carbides showed needle like morphology. But, the carbides were broken with an increase of austenitizing temperature. The specimen austenitized at 1240$^{\circ}C$ showed higher hardness and lower bending strength compared to that of 1150$^{\circ}C$. As expected, toughness increased with sub-zero quenching treatment.

  • Wind is an important variable for various scientific communities such as meteorology, climatology, and renewable energy. In this study, numerical simulations using WRF mesoscale model were performed to produce temporal and spatial wind information over the Republic of Korea during 2006. Although the spatial features and monthly variations of the near-surface wind speed were well simulated in the model, the simulated results overestimated the observed values as a whole. To correct these simulated wind speeds, a regression-based statistical algorithm with different constants and coefficients by land cover type was developed using the satellite-derived LST and NDWI. The corrected wind speeds for the algorithm validation showed strong correlation and close agreement with the observed values for each land cover type, with nearly zero mean bias and less than 0.4 m/s RMSE. Therefore, the proposed algorithm using remotely sensed surface observations may be useful for correcting simulated near-surface wind speeds and producing more accurate wind information over the Republic of Korea.

  • New results of dependence of magnetic field, trapped by a stack of HTS tapes, on amount of tapes in a stack are reported. Commercial GdBCO tape 12 mm width and without Cu layer was used for the research. Tape was divided in square pieces $12{\times}12mm^2$ from which stacks were formed. Filling factor of the tape was about 1.4%. Measurements were carried out for stacks with height from 5 to 250 pieces and at wide temperature range from liquid helium to liquid nitrogen. Both FC (field cooling) and ZFC (zero field cooling) cooling methods were used in the research. These two methods show matching results with good accuracy. As a result dependences of trapped magnetic flux on amount of tapes for different temperatures were received. Research shows, that with increasing height of the stack trapped magnetic field value reach saturation at about 60 tapes in a stack for low temperatures. From 60 to 100 tapes increase of magnet flux is only 5%. Thus increase amount of tapes in a stack is not profitable. Also investigation of trapped magnet field relaxation was carried out. Relaxation speed decreases with increasing amount of elements. It means that the higher the stack is, the longer trapped flux will be held in cause of the same temperature.
