This paper proposes a locomotion pattern and a control method for biped robots with curved soles. First, since the contact point of a supporting leg may arbitrarily move back and forth on the ground, we derived the desired trajectory from a model called the Moving. Inverted Pendulum Model (MIPM) where the Zero Moment Point (ZMP) exists at the supporting point and can be moved intentionally. Secondly, a biped robot with curved soles is an under-actuated system since the supporting point contacting with a point on the ground has no actuator during the single supporting phase. Therefore, this paper proposes a computed-torque control for this under-actuated system using decoupled dynamic equations. A series of computer simulations with a 7-DOF biped robot with curved soles shows that the proposed walking pattern and control method are effective and allow the biped robot to walk fast and stably, and move more like human beings. Also, it is shown that the curved sole shape has superior energy consumption compared to flat soles, and greater efficiency in ascending and descending the stairs.

In this paper, we deal with the dynamic walking of a humanoid robot. In our method, the inverted pendulum model is used as a dynamic model for a humanoid robot in which the Zero Moment Point (ZMP) and COG constraints of the robot are analyzed by considering the motion of the robot as that of an inverted pendulum. The motion of a humanoid robot should be generated by considering the dynamics of the robot, which commonly requires a large amount of computation. If a robot walks from one position to another while keeping the ZMP in the stable region, then the robot remains dynamically stable. The linear inverted pendulum model regards the whole robot as a point mass. It is simple, and relatively less computation is needed; however, it cannot model the whole dynamics of a humanoid robot. We propose a method for modeling a humanoid robot as an inverted pendulum system having 14 point masses. We also show that the dynamic stability of a humanoid robot can be determined more precisely by our method.
As engineered timber such as Glulam is seeing increasing use in tall timber buildings, building codes are adapting to allow for this. In order for this material to be used confidently and safely in one of these applications, there is a need to understand the effects that fire can have on an engineered timber structural member. The post-fire resilience aspect of glulam is studied herein. Two sets of experiments are performed to consider the validity of zero strength guidance with respect to short duration fire exposure on thin glulam members. Small scale samples were heated in a cone calorimeter to different fire severities. These samples illustrated significant strength loss but high variability despite controlled quantification of char layers. Large scale samples were heated locally using a controlled fuel fire in shear and moment locations along the length of the beam respectively. Additionally, reduced cross section samples were created by mechanically carving a way an area of cross section equal to the area lost to char on the heated beams. All of the samples were then loaded to failure in four-point (laterally restrained) bending tests. The beams that have been burnt in the shear region were observed as having a reduction in strength of up to 34.5% from the control beams. These test samples displayed relatively little variability, apart from beams that displayed material defects. The suite of testing indicated that zero strength guidance may be under conservative and may require increasing from 7 mm up to as much as 23 mm.
In oder for the robot to walk with stability, trajectory generation method for the biped robot is important. In this paper proposed the genetic algorithm to optimize biped robot motion parameters. Because most of trajectory generation, the walking parameters determined arbitrarily. Formulating the constraints of the motion parameters, and the trajectory is derived by cubic spline function. Finally walking patterns are described through simulation studies. When the ZMP(zero moment point) and DSM(dynamic stability margin) are satisfied, the walking pattern is chosen.
This work deals with development of effective redundancy resolution algorithms for the motion control of manipulator. Differently from the typical kinematically redundant robots that are attached to the fixed ground, the ZMP condition should be taken into account in the manipulator motion in order to guarantee the system stability. In this paper, a new motion planning algorithm for redundant manipulator not fixed to the ground is introduced. A sequential redundancy resolution algorithm is proposed, which ensures the ZMP (Zero Moment Point) stability, the planned operational motion, and additional sub-criteria such as joint limit index. A geometric constraint equation derived by reshaping the existing ZMP equation enables one to employ the sequential redundancy algorithm. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulating a redundant manipulator model.

This paper concerns the use of support vector regression (SVR), which is based on the kernel method for learning from examples, in identification of walking robots. To handle complex dynamics in humanoid robot and realize stable walking, this paper develops and implements two types of reference natural motions for a humanoid, namely, walking trajectories on a flat floor and on an ascending slope. Next, SVR is applied to model stable walking motions by considering these actual motions. Three kinds of kernels, namely, linear, polynomial, and radial basis function (RBF), are considered, and the results from these kernels are compared and evaluated. The results show that the SVR approach works well, and SVR with the RBF kernel function provides the best performance. Plus, it can be effectively applied to model and control a practical biped walking robot.

Support vector machines in biped humanoid robot are presented in this paper. The trajectory of the ZMP in biped walking robot poses an important criterion for the balance of the walking robots but complex dynamics involved make robot control difficult. We are establishing empirical relationships based on the dynamic stability of motion using SVMs. SVMs and kernel method have become very popular method for learning from examples. We applied SVM to model the practical humanoid robot. Three kinds of kernels are employed also and each result has been compared. As a result, SVM based on kernel method have been found to work well. Especially SVM with RBF kernel function provides the best results. The simulation results show that the generated ZMP from the SVM can be improve the stability of the biped walking robot and it can be effectively used to model and control practical biped walking robot.
In this paper, we generate a trajectory minimized the energy gait of a biped robot for walking a staircase using genetic algorithms and apply to the computed torque controller for the stable dynamic biped locomotion. In the saggital plane, a 6 degree of freedom biped robot that model consists of seven links is used. In order to minimize the total energy efficiency, the Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) is used. Operators of genetic algorithms are composed of a reproduction, crossover and mutation. In order to approximate the walking gait, the each joint angle is defined as a 4-th order polynomial of which coefficients are chromosomes. Constraints are divided into equality and inequality. Firstly, equality constraints consist of position conditions at the end of stride period and each joint angle and angular velocity condition for periodic walking. On the other hand, inequality constraints include the knee joint conditions, the zero moment point conditions for the x-direction and the tip conditions of swing leg during the period of a stride for walking a staircase.
This is a preliminary study is to make the robot walk more stably by observing the ZMP (Zero Moment Point) of the robot when the robot stands on one leg(single support) and then on two legs(double support) and so on. The robot consists of nine DOF (Degree of freedom) with lower part of the body. It is equipped with motor drivers and force sensors inside the robot. The motors are controlled by the external PC (Intel pentium 4). By the experimental results, it is found that the robot is unstable in the instant of changing from single support to double support or from double support to single support. We use the trajectory compensation of the angle and the length of both legs to realize more stable walking.
To implement Argentina tango dancer-like walking of the humanoid robot, a new trajectory generation scheme based on particle swarm optimization of the blending polynomial is presented. Firstly, the characteristics of Argentina tango walking are derived from observation of tango dance. Secondly, these are reflected in walking pose conditions and cost functions of particle swarm optimization to determine the coefficients of blending polynomial. For the stability of biped walking, zero moment point and reference trajectory of swing foot are also included in cost function. Thirdly, after tango walking cycle is divided into 3 stages with 2 postures, optimal trajectories of ankles, knees and hip of lower body, which include 6 sagittal and 4 coronal angles, are derived in consequence of optimization. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed scheme is validated by simulating biped walking of humanoid robot with derived trajectories under the 3D Simscape environment.
