The ammonium ion exchange characteristics of natural zeolite were investigated to remove ${NH_4}^+-N$. The effect of water temperature, particle size and competitive cation on the exchange capacity was examined. Ammonium ion exchange capacity tended to decrease when the temperature increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$. Exchange capacity was increased according to the particle size of natural zeolite comes to be small. Batch isotherm experiments were conducted for measuring ammonium ion exchange capacity. The ion exchange capacity was well described either by the Langmuir isotherm model or by the Freundlich isotherm model. The ammonium ion exchange capacity ($q_m$) of zeolite carrier can be calculated $11.744mg-{NH_4}^+/g$-carrier. The ion exchange capacity of manufactured zeolite carrier was showed a similar tendency as ion exchange capacity of powder-sized natural zeolite. Therefore, zeolite carrier can be used for increasing of nitrogen removal efficiency in the wastewater treatment plants.
A study on the synthesis of zeolite from coal fly ash from power plant was carried out to reduce environmental problems and reuse industrial waste. The synthesized zeolite was proved to be Zeolite 4A type by means of the XRD and SEM analysis, and then the synthesized zeolite was used as an absorbent to remove the $NH_4^+$ ions in the wastewater and water. In the ion exchange of single $NH_4^+$ ions by the natural zeolite and the synthesized zeolite, the ion exchange reached equilibrium within 10 min. and 1hr, respectively. The amount of ion exchanged $NH_4^+$ to the unit weight of natural zeolite and zeolite 4A were 1.09 and 3.54 meq/g respectively, and the amount of $NH_4$ ion exchanged by the synthesized zeolite was higher than by the natural zeolite. The ion exchange kinetics fitted very well to the Feundlich and Langmuir isotherm. The effects of coexisting cations on the ion-exchange properties of zeolites were studied in order to apply them to water treatment. In the bisolute-system of the $NH_4^+-K^+$ and $NH_4^+-Na^+$ systems, the ion exchange capacity was smaller than the single $NH_4^+$ ion system. The effects of coexisting cations on the ion exchange system by the natural zeolite and the synthesized zeolite were found to be $K^+>Na^+$ and $Na^+>K^+>>Mg^{2+}>Ca^{2+}$, respectively.
Ammonium ion is notorious for the adverse effects upon many of the important uses of water such as toxcity to fish, corrosion of metals and concrete, and concern over man's consumption. A clinoptilolite, which is a naturally occurring zeolite selective for ammonium ion exchange, has been used. Batch isotherm experiments were conducted for measuring ammonium ion exchange capacity. The ion exchange capacity was well described either by the Langmuir equation or by the Freundlich equation. As the particle size of the clinoptilolite decreased, exchange capacity was increased. The smaller particle size enhaced the exchange of ammonium ion due to the greater surface area and decreased diffusion to the exchange sites within the zeolite. Ammonium ion exchange capacity tended to decrease when the temperature increased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$, and the temperature correction factor was found to be 0.98 in the Langmuir equation.
Synthetic zeolite A was prerared from domestic Hadong kaolin with sodium hydroxide solution and their ion exchange isotherms of $K^+$, $NH^{4+}$, $Li^+$ and $Ag^+$ ion were presented. The optimum reaction conditions for synthetic zeolite A from calcinated kaolin were 2 fold excess of 2N sodium hydroxide solution, 10$0^{\circ}C$ and 8 hours. It was observed that before the crystallization of zeolite A the samples reacted with sodium hydroxide solution had rather higher ion exchange capacities than zeolite A. The $K^+$-$Na^+$ and $Ag^+$$Na^+$ ion exchange isotherms were signoidal. The initial selectivity series was in the order $Ag^+$$K^+$>$Na^+$>$NH_4$>$Li^+$. Between approximately 33 and 67% replacement of soium ions the selectivity series became $Na^>$ and above 67% became $Ag^+$>$K^+$. Evidence were also presented to demonstrate that 8 out of 12 sodium ions per pseudo unit cell were not easily replaceable by lithium ions and 4 out of 12 not easily replaceable by ammonium ions.
In this study, PET containing 3% silver ion-exchange zeolite was mixed with cotton in a ratio of 6:4 to prepare a spun yarn to evaluate the tensile strength, absorption speed, absorption rate, antibacterial property, and the efficiency of deodorization. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained. First, it can be confirmed that silver ion exchange zeolite is evenly distributed inside and on the surface of the antimicrobial PET-SF through SEM. It was found that the tensile strength between the CVC sample mixed with silver ion zeolite PET and cotton and the normal cotton 100% sample was slightly lower in the CVC sample. Although the absorption speed and water absorption rate were measured to find out the moisture characteristics, it was confirmed that there was no significant difference. The contact angle was slightly larger in the antimicrobial CVC sample, but the time it took for the moisture to completely penetrate into the knit fabric was 0.85 seconds. In addition, it was found that out of the total mixing ratio, 40% of antibacterial PET was spun with regular cotton to produce yarn, which had an excellent bacteria reduction rate of 99.9% and a deodorization efficiency of 85%.
Livestock wastewater containing high concentrations of organic matters and ammonia-nitrogen has been known as one of the recalcitrant wastewater. It is difficult to treat by conventional wastewater treatment techniques. This study was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of zeolite ion exchange and gamma-ray irradiation treatment of livestock wastewater. The removal efficiencies of $SCOD_{Cr}$ and $NH_3-N$ were significantly enhanced by gamma-ray irradiation after zeolite ion exchange as a pre-treatment. However, the effects of zeolite particle size on the $SCOD_{Cr}$ and $NH_3-N$ removal efficiencies were insignificant. These results indicate that the combined process of zeolite ion exchange and gamma-ray irradiation has potential for the treatment of livestock wastewater.
To find a recycling method for waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panel glasses, we investigated the synthesis process of zeolite with an ion exchange ability by hydrothermal reaction using waste LCD panel glass as a raw material. It was shown that the waste LCD panel glass can be used as a raw material for the production of zeolites having the ion exchange ability. Following conditions for the synthesis of the zeolite with an ion exchange ability were required : the molar ratio of Si to Al components of the waste LCD glass needs to be 2.0 to 2.8, and the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 12 hours are needed for the hydrothermal reaction. Based on the required conditions previously mentioned, the A type zeolite was synthesized when the molar ratio of the Si to Al component was 2.0, and the P type zeolite was produced when the molar ratio was 2.8. The type A zeolite synthesized by using the waste LCD panel glass showed a good ion exchange ability and heavy metal adsorption ability. Also, an excellent ion exchange capacity was observed as the crystal phase grows stably in a cubic phase.
This study was carried out to develop the low-priced adsorbent by synthesizing the zeolite of high cation exchange capacity with the natural zeolite and to examine the adsorbing ability of this zeolite. The dominant clay minerals were clinoptilolite and mordenite in natural zeolite, while phillipsite in the synthesized zeolite. Adsorption reaction of $NH_4^{+}$on zeolite was reached equilibrium after 2 hrs. The amount of adsorption was increased with increasing the concentration of $NH_4^{+}$or the pH of suspension. The cation exchange capacity of zeolite was slightly decreased below pH 4.0 by acidic treatment. It was estimated that the ability of the synthesized zeolite to remove noxious ions was better than that of the natural zeolite.
Zeolite X adsorbents with large surface area were prepared for using oxygen PSA adsorbent. Selective adsorption performance of nitrogen on the synthesized zeolite X adsorbent was improved by the cation exchange of adsorbent. The zeolite X which had over $650m^2/g$ surface area was synthesized at the conditions of $SiO_2\;:\;Na_2O\;:\;H_2O\;:\;Al_2O_3$ = 2.5 : 3.5 : 150 : 1 mole ratio, $98^{\circ}C$ temperature and 18 h synthesized time in 50 L reactor. The metal ions Li, Ag, Ca, Br, Sr, etc. were investigated for ion exchange with zeolite X. Ag ion was showed the highest ion exchange rate among these metal ions and all metal ions were exchanged with Na ion at equivalent rate. Compared with the NaX adsorbent, the ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent remarkably improved its adsorption performance of nitrogen at the conditions of $10{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ temperature and 0~9 atm pressure. At an equilibrium pressure under 0.5 atm, adsorption performance of nitrogen on the ion exchanged zeolite adsorbent increased in the order of Ag > Li > Ca > Sr> Ba > K, whereas at an equilibrium pressure over 1 atm showed in the order of Li > Ag > Ca > Sr > Ba > K. Nitrogen/oxygen separation factor of Li ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent was 13.023 at the partial pressure of nitrogen/oxygen gas mixture similar to air and $20^{\circ}C$ adsorption temperature.
