  • The dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene with carbon dioxide has been carried out over ZSM-5 zeolite-supported iron oxide catalyst as well as commercial catalyst (K-Fe2O3) and unsupported iron oxide (Fe3O4) for comparison. In the dehydrogenation over the ZSM-5 zeolite-supported iron oxide catalyst, ethylbenzene is predominantly converted to styrene by an oxidative pathway in the presence of excess carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide in this reaction is found to play a role as an oxidant for promoting catalytic activity as well as coke resistance of catalyst. On the other hand, both of commercial catalyst and unsupported Fe2O4 exhibit considerable decrease in catalytic activity under the same condition. It is suggested that an active phase for the dehydrogenation with carbon dioxide over ZSM-5 zeolite-supported iron oxide catalyst would be rather a reduced and isolated magnetite (Fe3O4)-like phase having oxygen deficiency in the zeolite matrix.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties, absorption, and reduction performance of NOx in the mortar containing mineral admixture like zeolite and active hwangtoh were evaluated. Zeolite and active hwangtoh were used as binder, and zeolite and active hwangtoh were substituted for cement. The substitution ratio of two types of mineral admixtures was considered as 20 and 30% respectively. As a result of evaluating the compressive strength and flexural strength of each mortar specimen, the highest strength in the plain mixture was evaluated. As the substitution ratio of zeolite and active hwangtoh increased, the compressive and flexural strength decreased. In addition, the difference of compressive and flexural strength between active hwangtoh and zeolite mixing was evaluated to be insignificant. To evaluate the absorption rate, the mixture was designed to lower the W/B ratio of the existing mixture and set the substitution ratio of active hwangtoh and zeolite at 25%. The highest absorption ratio in the mortar with zeolite was evaluated, and the difference in absorption ratio between the remaining two mortar mixtures was small. The assessment of reduction performance of NOx considering the application of photocatalyst showed a clearly decreasing reduction behavior, even if they were the same mortar mixture. Zeolite and active hwangtoh also showed a higher NOx reduction than the Plain mixture, because of their porosity properties. In the case of active hwangtoh, the absorption ratio was lower than that of zeolite mixture, but the reduction of NOx performance was better than the result of zeolite mixture.

  • In this work, the zeolite/diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) systems were investigated in terms of the cure kinetics and mechanical interfacial properties of the composites. The 4, 4-diamino diphenyl methane(DDM) was used as a curing agent for epoxy. Two types of zeolite(PZ) were prepared with 15 and 35 wt% KOH treatments(15-BZ and 35-BZ, respectively) for 24 h, and their surface characteristics were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). Cure kinetics of the composites were examined in the context of differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), and mechanical interfacial properties were investigated in critical stress intensity factor($K_{IC}$) and critical strain energy release rate($G_{IC}$). In the results of XPS and XRD, sodium ion(Na) of zeolite was exchanged for potassium ion(K), resulting from the treatment of KOH. Also, $Si_{2p}/Al{2p}$ composition ratios of the treated zeolite were increased, which could be attributed to the weakening of Al-O bond in framework. Cure activation energy($E_a$) of 15-BZ composites was decreased, whereas KIC and $G_{IC}$ were increased, compared with those of the pure zeolite/DGEBA composites. It was probably accounted that the acidity of zeolite was increased by surface treatments and the cure reaction between zeolite and epoxy was influenced on the increased acidity of zeolite.

  • Adsorption experiments for $H_2$, $CO_2$, CO, and their binary mixtures on zeolite 5A were performed by static volumetric method. Experimental data were obtained at temperatures of 293.15, 303.15 and 313.15 K and at pressures to 25 atm. The parameters obtained from single component adsorption isotherm. Multicomponent adsorption equilibria could be predicted and compared with experimental data. Langmuir isotherm, Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm and Dual-Site Langmuir isotherm be used to predict the experimental results for binary adsorption equilibria of $CO_2/CO$ and $H_2/CO_2$ on zeolite 5A. Dual-Site Langmuir isotherm showed the best agreement with the experimental results.

  • A faujasite NaY zeolite membrane was prepared on a tubular ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ support by the secondary growth process, and effects of permeation test conditions on the $CO_2/N_2$ separation were investigated. A NaY zeolite membrane with good $CO_2/N_2$ separation was successfully synthesized by using the hydrothermal solution ($Al_2O_3:SiO_2:Na_2O:H_2O$ = 1:6:14:840 in a molar base): at a permeation temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, its $CO_2$ permeance and $CO_2/N_2$ separation factor were $2.5{\times}10^{-7}mol/m^2secPa$ and 34, respectively. The $CO_2$ and $N_2$ permeations were highly dependent on permeation test conditions (feed composition, feeding rate, feed pressure, He sweeping rate and permeation temperature). The results indicated that (i) $CO_2$ and $N_2$ permeations through NaY zeolite membrane are governed by surface and micropore diffusions, respectively, (ii) the preparation of NaY zeolite membrane with a large permeating area is one of the most difficult hurdles for its real applications, and (iii) the retardation of $N_2$ permeation is an effective key to improve $CO_2/N_2$ separation factor in NaY zeolite membrane.

  • To find a recycling method for waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panel glasses, we investigated the synthesis process of zeolite with an ion exchange ability by hydrothermal reaction using waste LCD panel glass as a raw material. It was shown that the waste LCD panel glass can be used as a raw material for the production of zeolites having the ion exchange ability. Following conditions for the synthesis of the zeolite with an ion exchange ability were required : the molar ratio of Si to Al components of the waste LCD glass needs to be 2.0 to 2.8, and the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 12 hours are needed for the hydrothermal reaction. Based on the required conditions previously mentioned, the A type zeolite was synthesized when the molar ratio of the Si to Al component was 2.0, and the P type zeolite was produced when the molar ratio was 2.8. The type A zeolite synthesized by using the waste LCD panel glass showed a good ion exchange ability and heavy metal adsorption ability. Also, an excellent ion exchange capacity was observed as the crystal phase grows stably in a cubic phase.

  • This study is about zeolite synthesis from the sewage sludge incinerator fly ash of "S" sewage treatment center located in Seoul. For this purpose, the properties of raw fly ash as starting material, the hydrothermal conditions for zeolite synthesis and the environmental applicabilities of synthesized zeolites were examined. Fly ash from sewage sludge incinerator has large quantities of SiO$_2$ and Al$_2$O$_3$ and their contents are 42.8 wt.% and 21.2 wt.% respectively. So fly ash is considered to be possible starting material for zeolite synthesis. The results from leaching test of fly ash showed that the concentration of hazardous metals were very low as compared with the Korea leaching standard of the Waste Management Law. But the concentration from total recoverable test of fly ash were higher than the fertilizer standard of Fertilizer Management Law. Major zeolite products synthesized by hydrothermal reaction are analcime in teflon vessel and zeolite P1 in borosilicate flask. Optimum conditions for the synthesis of analcime were 1 N of NaOH concentration, 16 hour of reaction time and 135$^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature. For the zeolite P1 formation, the proper conditions were demonstrated to be 5 N of NaOH concentration, 16 hour reaction time and 130$^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature in this study. Hazardous metal contents in the analcime product are similar with those in raw fly ash. In case of the zeolite P1, the contents are reduced to nearly a half. Raw fly ash and the analcime product showed NH$_4{^+}$ ion exchange capacity of 0$\sim$1.0 mg of NH$_4{^+}$g$^{-1}$ and 3.0$\sim$7.4 mg of NH$_4{^+}$g$^{-1}$, respectively. However, the zeolite P1 product reached exchange capacity to 14.6$\sim$17.8 mg of NH$_4{^+}$g$^{-1}$. This values are in the range of those of natural clinoptilolite and phillipsite. From this point of view, zeolite synthesis from sewage treatment sludge incinerator fly ash is a good alternative for solid waste recycling.

  • Ammonia loss from urea significantly hinders efficient use of urea in agriculture. The level of nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) a long-lived greenhouse gas in atmosphere has increased mainly due to anthropogenic source, especially application of nitrogen fertilizers. There are reports in the literature showing that the addition of zeolite to N sources can improve the nitrogen use efficiency. This study was conducted to evaluate nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) and ammonia ($NH_3$) emission by mixed treatment of urea and zeolite in upland crop field. Urea fertilizer and zeolite were applied at different rates to study their effect on $N_2O$ emission during red pepper cultivation in upland soils. The $N_2O$ gas was collected by static closed chamber method and measured by gas chromatography. Ammonia concentration was analyzed by closed-dynamic air flow system method. The total $N_2O$ flux increased in proportion to the level of N application. Emission of $N_2O$ from the field increased from the plots applied with urea-zeolite mixture compared to urea alone. But urea-zeolite mixture treatment reduced about 30% of $NH_3$-N volatilization amounts. These results showed that the application of urea and zeolite mixture had a positive influence on reduction of $NH_3$ volatilization, but led to the increase in $N_2O$ emission in upland soils.

  • The coal is a useful industrial resource for a long time. However, coal waste is generated by the mining process. Coal wastes are the main cause of pollution in the surrounding environment, and the amount of coal waste is set at hundreds of millions of tons. Significant amounts of these components in the coal waste are $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$, which is also the main source of zeolites useful in various industries. This study is that the synthesis-zeolite was prepared from coal waste and properties and adsorption performance of synthesis-zeolite were compared with commercial zeolite. The synthesis-zeolite is showed similar properties to the commercial zeolite and also showed excellent adsorption performance against atmospheric pollution induced gases ($CO_2$, Toluene, $SO_2$, etc).

  • In this study, the fabrication of zeolite combined activated carbon spherical samples was carried out as follows. Briefly, ZSM-5 zeolite and activated carbon were composed as main absorbent materials; by controlling the weight percentage of zeolite and binder materials, a series of spherical samples (AZP 4, 6, 8) were prepared. These spherical samples were characterized by BET, XRD, SEM, EDX, and pressure drop; benzene and iodine adsorption tests, bactericidal effect test, and ignition temperature test were also performed. The adsorption capability was found to depend on the BET surface area; the spherical samples AZP6 with high BET surface area of $1011m^2/g$ not only exhibited excellent removal effects for benzene (24.9%) and iodine (920mg/g) but also a good bactericidal effect. The enhanced ignition temperature may be attributed to the homogeneous dispersion conditions and the proper weight percentage ratio between zeolite and activated carbon.
