  • This paper presents a new circuit topology of active edge resonant snubbers assisted half-bridge soft switching PWM inverter type DC-DC high power converter for DC bus feeding power plants. The proposed DC-DC power converter is composed of a typical voltage source-fed half-bridge high frequency PWM inverter with a high frequency planar transformer link in addition to input DC busline side power semiconductor switching devices for PWM control scheme and parallel capacitive lossless snubbers. The operating principle of the new DC-DC converter treated here is described by using switching mode equivalent circuits, together with its unique features. All the active power switches in the half-bridge arms and input DC buslines can achieve ZCS turn-on and ZVS turn-off commutation transitions. The total turn-off switching losses of the power switches can be significantly reduced. As a result, a high switching frequency IGBTs can be actually selected in the frequency range of 60 kHz under the principle of soft switching. The performance evaluations of the experimental setup are illustrated practically. The effectiveness of this new converter topology is proved for such low voltage and large current DC-DC power supplies as DC bus feeding from a practical point of view.

  • A novel zero voltage and zero current switching (ZVZCS) full bridge (FB) PWM converter with a low output current ripple is proposed. The proposed circuit improve the demerits of the previously presented ZVBCS-FB-PWM converters[5-8] such as use of lossy components or additional active switches. A simple auxiliary circuit which includes neither lossy components nor active switches provides ZVZCS conditions to primary switches, ZVS for leading-leg switches and ZCS for lagging-leg switches. In addition, this proposed circuit reduces a output current ripple considerably. Many advantages including simple circuit topology, high efficiency, low cost and low current ripple make the new converter attractive far high power (> 1kW) applications.

  • This paper proposes a new soft-switched Sepic converter. It has low switching losses and low conduction losses due to its auxiliary communicated circuit and synchronous rectifier operation, respectively. Because of its positive and buck/boost-like DC voltage transfer function (M=D/(1-D)), the proposed converter is desirable for use in distributed power systems. The proposed converter has versions both with and without a transformer. The paper also suggests some design guidelines in terms of the power circuit and the control loop for the proposed converter.

  • This paper proposes a new power conditioning system for the fuel cell power generation, which consists of a LLC resonant DC-DC converter and 3-phase inverter. The LLC resonant converter boosts the fuel cell voltage of 26-48V up to 400V, using the hard-switching boost converter and the high-frequency ZVS half-bridge converter. The operation of proposed power conditioning system was verified through simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software. The feasibility of hardware implementation was verified through experimental works with a laboratory prototype, which was built with 1.2kW PEM fuel-cell stack, 1kW LLC resonant converter, and 3kW PWM inverter. The proposed system can be utilized to commercialize a real interconnection system for the fuel-cell power generation.

  • This paper deals with the optimization of the driving techniques for the ZVT synchronous buck converter proposed in [1]. Two new gate drive circuits are proposed to allow this converter to operate by only one control signal as a 12V voltage regulator module (VRM). Voltage-driven method is applied for the synchronous rectifier. In addition, the control signal drives the main and auxiliary switches by one driving circuit. Both of the circuits are supplied by the input voltage. As a result, no supply voltage is required. This approach decreases both the complexity and cost in converter hardware implementation and is suitable for practical applications. In addition, the proposed SR driving scheme can also be used for many high frequency resonant converters and some high frequency discontinuous current mode PWM circuits. The ZVT synchronous buck converter with new gate drive circuits is analyzed and the presented experimental results confirm the theoretical analysis.

  • In this paper, high-efficiency design methodology of a zero-voltage-switching full-bridge (ZVS-FB) pulse width modulation (PWM) converter for server-computer power supply is discussed based on self-driven synchronous rectifier (SR) performance. The design approach focuses on rectifier conduction loss on the secondary side because of high output current application. Various-number parallel-connected SRs are evaluated to reduce high conduction loss. For this approach, the reliability of gate control signals produced from a self-driver is analyzed in detail to determine whether the converter achieves high efficiency. A laboratory prototype that operates at 80 kHz and rated 1 kW/12 V is built for various-number parallel combination of SRs to verify the proposed theoretical analysis and evaluations. Measurement results show that the best efficiency of the converter is 95.16%.

  • This paper presents the evaluation of a three-phase three-level DC-DC converter which achieves the soft switching condition for all switches in the circuit and uses the phase-shift PWM strategy to adjust electric power at the output side. According to the analysis, the operation modes can be categorized into two cases: in the first case, where the phase shift angle is less than 120 degrees and in the second case, where the phase shift angle is more than 120 degrees. The outer switches of the circuit operate under ZVS condition and the inner switches operate under ZVZCS condition. It has been discovered that under ZCS condition of the inner switches, when the blocking capacitors decrease, they make the voltage across the blocking capacitor higher so the current reduce rapidly. A three-phase three-level DC-DC converter has a maximum efficiency of 93.5% when its load is of 5.7 kW. The results from the experiment have been compared to the results obtained by the $MATLAB^{(R)}$ simulator in order to confirm the validity of the proposed converter.

  • The two-transformer full bridge (TTFB) PWM converter has two transformers which act as the output inductor as well as the main transformer, i.e. as the forward and the flyback transformer. Although the doubled leakage inductor of the TTFB makes it easier to achieve the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) of the lagging leg switch along the wide load range, it instigates a serious voltage ringing in the secondary rectifier diodes, which would require the dissipative snubber circuit, cause the serious power dissipation, and increase the voltage stress across those diodes. To overcome these problems, a, new lossless diode-clamp rectifier (LDCR) is employed as the output rectifier, which helps the voltage across rectifier diodes to be clamped on a half the output voltage $(V_o/2)$ or the output voltage $(V_o)$. Therefore, no dissipative snubber for rectifier diodes is needed and a high efficiency as well as low noise output voltage can be realized. The operations, analysis and design consideration of proposed converter are presented in this paper. To verify the validity of the proposed converter, experimental results from a 425W, 385-170Vdc prototype for the plasma display panel (PDP) sustaining power module (PSPM) are presented.
